    Cassandra Cain, the Batgirl that everyone wishes was in a animated series or feature. While DC keeps wishing for people to forget her.

    Can we just take a moment to appreciate how nice her costume is? With Batman, you just can see the man beyond the mask. With Cassandra, you have a faceless terror. That small change in the mask makes the costume somehow even scarier than the bat already is.
    Also, great series Linkara.

    I have a very different take on Bruce talking about Cass failing to save John Robinson. I take it to mean that he recognizes that Cassandra will punish herself because they both have a similar guilt complex, not that he's angry at her. He's just... Batman so he can't communicate it well to Babs.

      I always viewed it as rather depressing from Batman's perspective since that's what he feels about himself every time he couldn't save someone, regardless of the circumstances and whether it was even possible. Guy just damns himself for every failure.

    • @faidreview1186
      @faidreview1186 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@Koshirro er.... No. I've read these comics last week since I wanted to read her solo run before this video came out.
      Yes he was a dick to Helena. I will not deny that.
      But the Cass situation? She had failed the guy the issue before. And this issue started up with Cass working herself to the bone. Barbara and Bruce are talking about it with Barbara unsure why she was acting like this. They spoke a bit ending with Bruce asking her "Who does she remind you of?"
      "Well.... You"
      Then they talk some more with Bruce saying 'she failed'
      Barbara said all the good stuff she did in the mission and how it wasn't her fault
      And Bruce just repeated that she failed. Because that's what he'd think if he was in her place. And the two are so alike he knew what she was feeling
      Following this up is in issue 34 where Cassandra wants to solve a murder and Bruce says she isn't ready. She follows him around and when the case is over they have a heart to heart showing that she is possibly the only member of the BatFamily to TRULY get Bruce's Mission.
      To make sure another child doesn't go through horrors like they had. And how nothing they do will be enough

    "Never move on from painful memories" could probably be a bat family slogan. Bruce, Dick etc. Barbra seems the most well adjusted of the bat family, other than Alfred. Which makes her being condescending and angry at Cassandra off putting. Though it is understandable. She's been put in a mentor position somewhat, co mentoring with Batman at that, and probably jealous of Cassandra being able to be batgirl and possibly at her ability to still walk plus some anger at her position. I'm guessing that it boils over from time to time, which is again understandable.

      Batman is the character who, through the faults of some writers, is probably one of the best examples of how and why too many people will equate "badass" and "stoic" with "jackass" and "uncaring." More folks need to put effort into showing the better sides of him, the sides that show that he's got compassion for anyone with tragedy and hardship in their lives, that believes in proper justice and potential redemption for almost anybody.

    • @krystalkruspe3529
      @krystalkruspe3529 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Depends. I actually like how he was written during the start of Rebirth. I’m sorry, but him forming his own Suicide Squad and going on about how he is going to “break his damn back” when going after Bane in I Am Suicide was absolutely hilarious, and I refuse to believe he wasn’t intentionally using that phrasing over and over just to make everyone but Catwoman think he was being hyperbolic. Plus the whole reintroduction to their romance and the Monster Men crossover? Pretty damn good. It helps that it all led into the amazing Batburger scene in I Am Bane.

It was self contained and didn’t have anything in it I wasn’t familiar with so I hadn’t known about anything like the No Man’s Land. When I finally got the trade I was confused at first...there’s a new batgirl? What was no man’s land? I ended up spending most of the year buying trades going back though no mans land and the new Gotham arc. I still have a huge stack of them. Still haven’t read Knightfall though.

    Just this retrospective alone is enough to convince me that Cassandra Cain is definitely the best Batgirl. Hell, I didn't even know of her existence until this retrospective. And it's because of this channel and this Cassandra series that got me to buy all 4 volumes of No Man's Land, the first 3 volumes of Batgirl's series, and the Scott Snyder Court of Owls trilogy.
    It's a shame that we've never got an actual appearance in any of the DC Animated movies or tv shows. This character is a lot like X-23/Laura and Toph/Greatest-Earth-Bender-Who-Ever-Lived, or at least a mix of the two. Born with a disability that she turns into her greatest asset; turned her training to kill to help others; haunted by a dark past that always threats to destroy her new life. Cassandra is exactly the type of heroine that people need in their superhero media, especially for girls.
    I personally hate it when society tries to force protagonists on us that try to satisfy a political movement, like a female character they say is supposed to be better than anyone else. This also extends to male characters too. It shouldn't be about being better than anyone else or being perfect at everything, it should be about characters who overcome their past and become better than who they were before. Society believes too much in reputation as opposed to character.
    I love this line from a movie: "Reputation is how people think of you. Character is who you are."
    And I write my stories with that guideline in mind. A reminder that is what makes a great character, or at least part of it. And Cassandra Cain is that kind of character. I'm happy she is finally getting her first appearance in the Bird of Prey movie (though I am worried about it) and I hope it leads to her getting more appearance in future DC stuff in the future.

    If there's one modern comic series i would LOVE to get your impressions on/watch a video of is Dark Nights Metal. Now i will admit, i'm not a terribly huge fan of comics, not any more at least. But Dark Nights Metal was simply amazing to me, i loved every single issue of it. And the fact that they used The Batman Who Laughs for other stories down the line just goes to show how good the character was...i think, don't quote me on that

    Man, this episode has it all. A portmanteau in the title, a look at the background of an awesome character that I know too little about, and a level of commitment to the "condescending Oracle" gag that Perry Cox himself would be proud of.

    "We'll know your name and address and favorite ice cream by the end of the day!"
    I was looking away from the video for a moment as that line was read, and it got a chuckle out of me because it sounded like so many other jokes said on this show about "secret" organizations and how they love flaunting how secret they are. ...AAAND then I looked back at the screen again, and saw that it was REAL DIALOGUE from the comic itself. ...Seriously? lmao

    Officer Down had the long term consequence of it causing Gordon to retire. He'd always been drawn like a man in his late fifties so it seemed like a natural event to happen - but they had to make it an event. Plus it meant that Batman had to forge a relationship with the new commissioner even if the two were directly introduced to each other by Gordon.
    For a time it seemed like a good status quo change in the Batman franchise. Sadly DC being DC brought Gordon back in the One Year Later follow up to Infinite Crisis. There didn't really seem to be any good reason and with New 52 & Rebirth it has been rendered pointless. Thank you for joining us on No Moral Theatre.

    I highly look forward to your Stephanie Brown retrospective. As she was the character that got me back into comics. Remember going to the library one day and deciding to check out what they had for comics. And one of the comics I found was a trade paperback of the first few volumes of her solo Batgirl series. Which I decided to check out and read and really fell in love with it and her as a character. And decided to find any comic where she played a solid role in and read them. Which is how I was introduced to Cassandra Cain and fell in love with her as a character. But man did they both get screwed over and is why I have such a hard time now buying or trusting most things DC. I mean jesus they have basically tried to erase Brown from existence. Like I remember being all pumped up that she was about to return in the smallville comic series with her showing up at the end of one of the issues. Yet next thing you know they decide to use Barbara instead. Even worse and dumber is that in the digital-first Lil’ Gotham comic. They show kids dressed up in hero costumes and one of them is dressed as Stephanie Brown as Batgirl. Yet shortly after they went back and edited the images to make sure it didn't look like Brown at all. Which they either did so that nobody would remember her as a character and demand that they want to see her back in the universe. Instead they want everyone to just forget she ever existed. Or because they think us readers are so dumb that we might have actually thought the kid dressed up on Halloween might actually be the real Brown and not some kid wearing a costume.

    I'm guessing the "Officer Down" tie in exists to help sell Cassandra's character to people who weren't following her solo series at the time; I read "Officer Down" because it interrupted "Nightwing", and was so impressed by Cassandra's tie-in that I was compelled to check out the solo series. I only ever got around to reading the first issue (this was only about a year ago by the way, so its not like I've been slacking for over a decade), but this retrospective may finally push me to read her solo series properly.
    As for the "Officer Down" event itself, gosh, that's a weird one. For those that don't know, Batman insists on spending the entire story standing around in Gordon's hospital ward whilst everyone else is left to actually look for the culprit. At one point, Alfred goes the hospital ward to try to convince Bruce that he should be out there helping the others, but he just stands there in silence, not even looking at Alfred. Alfred eventually gets so frustrated that he vows to stop working for the Waynes and leave, he's even shown doing so, a point that I don't remember being resolved at the end of the event.

    • @AT4W
      @AT4W  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Exactly. It was just WEIRD. And I remember it being heavily hyped and promoted... and it wasn't even like some lengthy storyline, just a few parts and only the single tie-in.

    Batman had been going down a regression of paranoia and narcisissm for close to a decade prior to his treatment of Cassandra in these stories. While it wasn't explicitly told when this happened, it's likely three events Death in the Family, Knightfall ;and No MAn's LAnd all contributed to his personality change. Each of these stories affected the Dark Knight. His personal loss of Jason Todd haunted him. This would keep him from being too attached to his partners, thinking of them more as soldiers in his war on crime. Knightfall broke his spirit as well as his body, and it would take a long time to reconcile that, beaten down in his own home and humiliated in front of the whole city. Then some bad decisions were made like giving an unstable assassin the mantle of the Batman and all the pressures and weight attached to it, which drove that man insane. There were trust issues that came out of that. Then the loss of his city, and the fact that Bruce Wayne couldn't save it with his power and influence must have been egoshattering, and Batman wasn't enough to quell the carnage. Tower of Babel, the Doug Monech/Kelley Jones Batman stories, as well as the Batman stories that came out of the wake of No Man's Land all portray Batman as a egotistical, driven, shell of a man with a superiority complex. This was a good 5 years before Infinite Crisis.

    While it's jumping the gun a bit I think about how she was ruined and note how at around the same time the same thing was done to Rose Wilson. Characters created with the idea that just because your parent is bad guy doesn't mean you are. So they just go and make them bad. At least with Cassandra you could argue she'd only been treated decently for the last year or two. Rose was raised by her mother and didn't really know her father until her teens. It wasn't a conventional upbringing, but it was loving and not abusive.

    I understand not liking Babs being condescending to Cass about learning to read, but there's some stuff to substantiate, at least, her frustration (and no, not just because she's a librarian). Babs mentioned to Nightwing in one of the first six issues that it was hard to become close or attached to Cassandra because she didn't speak. While she shouldn't be made to feel bad for her non-verbal skills, it does create a barrier, which creates a form of struggle for the characters to work through (and I'll take that over Tynion's version any day). While creating a profile for her as the new Batgirl, Barbara notes that her young charge seems to be highly intelligent, despite knowing less than a dozen words. One could see Oracle's attitude as that of a teacher who sees the academic potential in a student, but they'd rather do anything else, because Cass doesn't feel she *needs* to learn. She wants more for Cassandra, and is frustrated that she's settling for only being an awesome crime-fighter, and that helps create a familial bond between the two. This is a much better way of building character relationships, as opposed to the "Panel 1. Characters Meet. Panel 2. Characters are now best friends because it's quicker and easier" -style of the Eternal series.

    I know you're making a point but I actually sort of understand Barbara's frustration. If Cassandra communicates through motion then the fact that Barbara has such limited mobility there's her own issues with that getting in the way and the fact that their communication could only go so far. It's kind of telling that she says "like normal people" since it emphasizes that she misses her sense of normalcy as batgirl.

    they need to stop stretching out stories in current comics its really hurting the industry, heres an example of how bad its getting, the new young justice series just barely finished its first arc in six issues the story could have been told in 3, each issue is 4 dollars meaning im spending 24 dollars while waiting 6 months for a complete story, i could also just wait for a trade except buying single issues better supports the series that could be canceled before the trade comes out,
    another bad result of stretching out a story is reading an issue where nothing happens except a maybe a cliffhanger

    Something sadly realistic about cassandra cains story is how not being taught language early on can effect you.
    If you arent taught early enough any language at all, youll likely never recover and become a fully functional member of society.
    Theres a reason why small children can be taught many languages at once and retain them in a couple years vs most people as adults have to work at one language at a time and take several years to become close to fluent.
    A childs mind is very malleable and easily taught. Easily taking in new ideas.
    However, if a child doesnt learn ANY form of real communication....they probably never will.
    They might have had the potential, but will likely grow up to be like a nonverbal autistic child. They wont really speak or want to be spoken to at all. Assuming they even understand.
    **If you are easily triggered (and i mean Actual triggering, not the twitter version) STOP READING NOW. What im about to write gets very dark.**
    Learned this after reading a sad article within the past few years. Forgive me if i forget some things or mix up some details from another story but as far as i remember this was what happened. There was a family who had something like 15 kids ranging from 18 years old to only a few months.from what i remember someone called CPS about seeing a malnourished child and police were sent to investigate. They were all malnourished, kept in mostly darkness, and often in pet cages like animals. **ESPECIALLY DONT READ THIS IF EASILY TRIGGERED** Then the bodies started turning up. Everything from what appeared to be stillborns to children 3 or 4 years old. There was a quite a few of them. Having been poorly buried on the property. **major trigger warning ends here**
    Just to give a perspective on the sheer level of abuse. The eldest child was the most stable (having gone to school for a few years before the parents went off the rocker) the youngest children it was believed wouldnt even remember the trauma their parents put them through/it could be handled well enough...but the middle 7 children basically were a hopeless case. Because they werent taught such basic things as communication. They were sent off to special care places and some to mental hospitals and are likely to spend their whole lives in those places because they were denied such basic skills and were so broken by those monsters that "raised" them.
    This would be the reality cassandra cain would face.
    So no. Shed never turn evil and learn how to write in navajo.

      Cassandra was the anti-Kamala Khan. When Kamala became popular, Marvel rolled with it. Made her an Avenger. Put her in cartoons and video games. She’s getting to join the MCU in her own Disney+ show. When Cass became popular, DC did everything they could to make people forget her. It’s a bizarre choice from a business perspective.
