    That physical position also creates a bit of a “wind tunnel” so they can more readily smell a predator approaching from behind, using the storm as cover.

    Turning your back to the storm and hunching your head into your shoulders works for humans too. It keeps the worst of the wind and rain off your face so that you can focus on other potential dangers. Our backs seem to cope with the cold better than our fronts too - maybe another reason horses bring their feet closer.

    • @Ferd414
      @Ferd414 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +22

      Just as a point of interest: The closer the feet are together, the smaller the potential damage from a nearby (a "direct hit" is a whole different kettle of fish) lightning strike. Lots of electricity/electronics math involved, but the short form is that if there's a strike nearby, the distance between the points of contact with the ground can be the determining factor between a "Yikes! That was close enough I felt it!" and a "We are gathered today to bury our ex-buddy" jolt. For instance, a person standing on one foot PROBABLY won't even get a "tickle" from a nearby strike, while someone standing the same distance from the strike, but with both feet on the ground in a "wide stance" might be burned or killed outright, and the person standing next to him with feet close together might only feel a "tingle".

      @DoremiFasolatido1979 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Weird. I'm the opposite. My lower back is where I dump nearly all of my body heat. Just below my ribs, to each side of my spine. I'm always bundling that up most because it's the most uncomfortably cold. Other locations are more sensitive, but those two places on my back just feel so cold so quickly.

    • @Ferd414
      @Ferd414 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      @@Joe-sg9ll Perhaps not, but that doesn't change the reality of what I said. Think about it - The horse that doesnt "squinch up" so his/her feet are close together in a storm, but instead, stands there spraddle-legged, dies as a result of a nearby lightning strike due to the phenomenon I described. So? So his/her genes just hit the eveolutionary equivalent of the dumpster.
      Meanwhile, the horse that DOES "squinch up" when a storm is overhead survives - The instinctive reaction (coded in the genes) proves to make that one better at surviving than the one who didn't have it. So his/her genes get passed down to future generations. No need for knowledge about lightning - or *ANYTHING*, for that matter. Just plain old "Because it was better able to survive the storm (due to "squinching up") this one lives to pass its genes to the next generation, while the genes of the dead one are deleted."
      Which sequence on which gene made one horse "squinch up" and the other not? Who knows? And frankly, it doesn't matter - The one that lived had that sequence, so its offspring, assuming it lives long to produce any, has a 50-50 shot at having that same sequence in its genes.
      The dead one doesn't - Its genes have been elminated from the competition - purely because it didn't "squinch up" when the storm rolled in.
      How often does this scenario need to occur for the "squinch up when there's a storm overhead" instinctive behavior to be selected for as a beneficial trait? As Mr. Darwin noticed when discussing the various beak shapes of the birds he observed on the Galapagos Islands during his trip around the world, the answer turns out to be "not all that often."

      @Joe-sg9l Yeah Ferd414 is spot on. They don't need to understand the danger to have behaviors advantageous to survival be reinforced and become dominant in a population. Feet farther apart is a definite disadvantage if lightning strikes the ground close by.

    Monique, this is so interesting! Do you know why they don't seek cover under shelter? Or if they would if it was lightening? Also could this somehow be a way to "wash" themselves? Thank you for sharing. . ❤

      Thank you. This was a very hot humid day in Georgia and they had just been turned out after a day of horse camp. We always pay attention to radar to see if the rain will include lightening in which case we would have left them in until it passed. This cool rain was a welcome relief from the heat, humidity and bugs. Horses will be horses and will stand where they want. We have to keep in mind that they think differently than we do, as they are herd animals.

    Looks like they are trying to get their head away from the rain, by using their body to block it. This wouldn't save them from lightning.

    Really what this likely boils down to is minimizing heat loss to avoid hypothermia. The “butt first” position puts the rear of the body towards the worst of the elements to help protect the internal organs and head from excessive heat loss. Secondly, by staggering their legs they create a natural windbreak that they then lower their head into to minimize wind exposure and conserve additional heat. While instinct dictates them to do that, it probably takes some time before the horse learns what posture makes a cold, driving rain the most bearable. Probably much in the same way we learn that crossing your arms to stay warm is not as effective as holding them tight to the torso and chest.

  • @QuiltLady

    They can’t go to the barn? Then they wouldn’t have to worry about the lightening.

    • @pumpkinproblem
      @pumpkinproblem 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Do wild horses have the luxury of a barn? Also even if there is a barn or other form of shelter offered horses don't always take it, we had 2 big open barns for our horses and they still chose to stand in the rain or seek shelter under a tree. Majority of the time the horses only used the barns to get out of the heat

  • @XDWX
    @XDWX 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Not sure if I buy the lightning reason. I would say it enables you to 1. Be more comfortable in the storm. Humans do the exact same thing. 2. Be better able to be aware of predators. Having your ears lower gets them out of the wind. It lets the scent flow in a better direction. If you tilt your head down it makes it easier to see behind you. Again humans do this exact same thing. If you think you are being followed just tilt your head down, it makes it incredibly easy to see your "blind spots" behind you. It's a trick used by secret service and other similar people.

      The only time rain bothers the horses is if it is freezing or cold rain and actually penetrates their coats. They will get cold then. Also, Jaxx and Boss don't like it when large rain drops hit them in the face. Other than that, no. Also, you can ask me anything you want to learn about =]

      They'd far rather stand in the open
      They are prey animals, so like how this comes naturally, standing in the open means they can hear any predators coming close.
      Under a tree or in a barn, they'll have the sound of the rain drops hitting hard, that'll cover up most sounds
      Plus, they can find natural shelter, even if its just a lower or higher spot in the field depending on weather
      Mine are on a hill, only natural shelter available, they'll stand at the very top during the heat as it catches the breeze, lower down the hill to get out the rain or cold wind(depends on time of year too)
