How can the wind affect horses that much? Because horses are prey animals and have the "fight or flight" instinct the wind affects them greatly. The wind can cause horses to smell quick whiffs of something that may smell unfamiliar which may cause fear. When horses see unfamiliar things blowing in the wind they can become frightened. Horses also may experience unusual sounds when it is windy that may scare them. Prey animals are of the mindset of let's run away from the unfamiliar thing just in case it is a predator or may cause a threat. Better safe than sorry. A lot of times when one horse runs the rest of the herd will run just in case there is an actual threat.
