My Arab mare lived to be almost 39. She had a ton of energy. In fact, she tried to buck me off when she was 28. Our local vet told me she outlived her counterparts by many years. That horse taught me a lot.

We had good vets, and we had a ton of love that went along with caring for them. i had a good equine dentist and great 5th generation horse people advising me. She survived a couple of attempts by a mountain lion to make her a meal, Old horses never die they just gallop across the sky. She is dancing in Heaven

Hi - Upstate South Carolina here - formerly from Georgia which I really miss! The heat has been brutal lately. I let my 19 and 28 year old horses out to pasture just after dawn. By mid-morning (usually around noon) they both meander back through the gates into the dry lot and stand under the overhang at the barn where the water tub is where they'll do the same thing as Jaxx - drink, snooze, repeat. Then back to the pasture after several hours. It's a daily routine for them. Animals are so much smarter than alot of people think.
@@lada3264 Is that an automatic waterer though? I can't see a tub. So maybe leaves not so much of a problem? I guess roots could play havoc with pipes though, so you're probably right trees not so good there.
Another reason that horses stand head to tail with each other is so they can swat flies for themselves and each other. We had a pair when I was a kid and they always stood like that , swishing their tails. It helped keep the flies off of their faces. Team work ! You have beautiful horses. Have a great day everyone !

@@susandivirgilio4551 , he was purchased as a foal on a reservation in Arizona, so we aren’t sure? But he had high withers, four white socks and a big blaze, I was told he had saddlebred but that was just a guess! He was bombproof, and liked to move out. I miss him terribly.
I had a 37 and three quarters ex steeplechase racehorse. He was the boss till the end, and such a refined kind gentleman, who no matter which gate (6 exits, 2 over grass) I left the premises to ride my thoroughbred mare, he would be waiting at the correct gate, even though he couldn't hear or see us approaching from 2 of them. Psychic? His heart was strong till the end, it was the neighbour's firework party that caused his demise. I had rain water catchment and tap water, the horses always preferred the rain water. Horses had stalls in a dutch barn where they could come and go as they liked (had the neighbour advised of their party, I would've locked them in), but at 4pm they waited at the fence by the road. I left work at 4pm to come to them.
I live in the desert it's hot and I put a big rainbird sprinkler in the center of the field and my three horses stand so the water hits them right across their back. they will stand like that for hours. the well water stays at 50 degrees and they love it.
Always keep clean water in the shade. Don't let water get dirty. They like cool water. It refreshes the horse. My 1 thoroughbred would dunk his whole head the the water, to cool off.
I live when they are able to have choices. There is a stable near my residence and the horses are separated in small pens where they have no room to do more than trot. A lit of them don't have shade and they are not able to walk in to their stalls throughout the day. They are put back inside at 4 p.m. so, in summer, they are out in the hottest time of day. My horses had access to woods on around ten acres. In the good weather from around mid March thru, sometimes, as late as mid November, they only went inside to be fed their grain. It was pretty comical, when I would want to go for a ride, I would take a halter out to catch someone. He or she would stand out there in the middle of the pasture and watch me approaching. The look on their face would be "oh no, here she comes" as if they couldn't get away. Most of them really did like to go out for a ride though and we were close to miles and miles of conservation land. I believe they enjoyed it nearly as much as I did.

My horse has long passed away, but she was very smart. She would eat the flowers off of dandelions with surgical precision, and left the rest of the plant. She also had a love for beets, so we planted them for her so she could find them, we always knew when she found one because it would look like she was wearing lipstick. She got excited when I pulled my bicycle out because she wanted to race me. She knew when it would rain or be really hot. I was heartbroken when I was made to give her up to a nearby farm, but my parents wanted the space for a workshop instead of stables.

In my herd, the pony is the oldest at 23... she is the herd leader and is firm but fair. They are outside in a herd turnout 24/7. When it is hot, she brings them into the run-in shed... other than that, they weather up in the bush most of the time. I have lots of hills and valleys, and that is where they tend to be when it is really windy or raining. My other channel has over 10 years of my horses lives documented from birth to 16 years old. One of my horses is the pony's daughter. Yep, you read that right. I didn't breed her, I rescued her when she was still pregnant with her. Lots of interactions to learn body language and equine behavior
My girls (horses) are 24 and 22 and still have quite a bit of energy. They have an open shed, so when it gets hot (we reached almost 30°C the last two days), they usually spend the sunny hours inside. They are out and about at night or when it rains. Greetings from Poland

I hope all your horses are doing ok with the heat. I just lost my Quarter Horse mare last week... she was just over 32 years old. She had a best friend, a donkey in her 20s. We live in Colorado, and while it certainly doesn't get as hot or humid as Georgia, we definitely have hot stretches. My mare, Sonnie, and the donkey, Julia, both did/do pretty much the exact same thing as your senior gentleman here. Sometimes they would even lay down right by the waterer.
I'm so sorry for your loss. Thank you for sharing with me. I lost my best boy Zip almost 2 years ago which is a long story, but I feel God took him then so I would not have to face the difficult decision of helping him pass. He had PPID and trouble with the heat. This is the hottest summer by far.
When I was young, 5 to 11 years old, a family friend had a buckskin stallion. He lived to be 29. What was so cool about him was he would let me ride him all the time. I always rode him in cake walks and such. He was always so gentle when little me was on his back. They had another horse named Dolly, a dunn mare. She was such a good and beautiful horse. She was in the ring doing the ribbon race with another horse and rider. She gave it her all but just as they were exiting the ring, just at the gate, she collapsed and died right there. I think it was a heart attack. It was so so sad. Every loved Dolly so much.
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but do you think Boone recognizes Fleur as one of his children, or just a herdmate now that she's grown? From what I know about horses the stallions don't really participate in foal care.
I don't think that is a dumb question, and yes, I believe Boone and Fleur know they are father and daughter. They can take in each other's breath and they do something called the Flehmen response with their upper lip to take in and identify pheromones. Horses can definitely identify their off spring.

Surely you realise wild horses are out all day and night with no barns. These have shade to go to if needed, water by auto feed, which stays cool in the pipes, he obviously chooses to stand by the water anyway. Chill, these look like well looked after horses.
Maybe because (a) large spreading trees take a great many years to grow to that size and (b) because that pasture already appears to have large spreading trees on at least three sides.
My 25-yo gets pissed if his water and hay are in the sun. He will tell you all about it 😂

@@NavvyMom We do have electric waterers. We still have to clean them at least twice a week, and we check them every day.

This is an electric waterer that has a thermostat in it and refills itself when the horses drink. I absolutely love it!

my 28 yr old gelding naps in the shade during the day and leads the younger one out to graze in the early morning and evening when it cools down😊
