- Firing up my 1976 Ferrari 512 Berlinetta Boxer after two months having stood in the garage... Note the flame after the backfire!
The procedure for a cold engine is as follows:
Twist the ingnition key to the first position. You will hear the clicking of the fuel pumps as they start delivering fuel to the carburetors. After approximately 15 to 20 seconds, pump the accellerator pedal to the floor four or five times, squirting lots of fuel into the intakes. Then, while holding the accellerator pedal about a third of the way down, twist the ignition key to the start position. You will hear a deep, exiting, expolding bark as the engine comes to life, accompanied by significant quantities of smoke out of the exhaust tips, as the oil that hs been resting in the cylinders is burnt. If the ambient temperture is cold and the car has not been driven for a while, the engine may die, necessitating a repeat of the above-described prodecure. Once started, the rpms should be kept at 2,000 until the smoke clears, usually in about two to three minutes.
Out on the open road, at low to mid-throttle, the moaning and slurping sound of the Webers is the dominant sensation. When the throttle is opened wide, the result is a massive roar and a seamless delivery of power. The smooth power delivery is deceptive as a glance at the speedometer usually reveals speeds greater than expected. The sound of the engine when extended is exciting and is similar to the sounds emanating from Jody Scheckter's and Gilles Villeneuve's Formula One flat-12s! - ยานยนต์และพาหนะ
Big shout out to the battery. You’re a real one ☝️
Hell yeah
And that starter
I know jesus christ!!
That thing sounded like an old soviet tank starting for the first time in 30 years. Beautiful!
soviet tank you are very baggy 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣😂
Thats true a T-34 Medium Tank Sounds almost like this
I prefere the sound of a Ferrari
Great! Probably one of the best cold start videos. Thanks for posting it.
Grouchy 12-cylinder, carburetted Italian cars are the best. "Bravo" to the battery, also!
Grouchy alright!
Bravo on the starter :D
@@jorgenascimento9710 crap? lmao u know nothing.
Certamente ha una Fiamm
Is it really a cold start though? There is smoke from the exhaust even before he enters the frame and goes to the car.
I've seen WW II radial engines starting more cleanly and easily than this beauty! Love it though, what character!
Perhaps it would have helped to start an open fire under the motor like in Russia during WW II 😁😂😱
🤣brooo
Maintenance nightmare all around
@@huzcer That's Ferrari ownership! 🙌✌
Hehe. Thats ferrari.. but when it runs, damn that sound..
I love how reluctant and highly strung older Ferrari 12 cylinders are, both the boxers and the V12s. They're like an angry giant. They do not want to wake, when they have just been woken they stagger around groggy when cold, but when they are alert and warmed up they are just immense. Monsters.
Fires right up. Gotta love that Italian reliability.
This is slowly becoming my favorite Ferrari of all time, I do not know why, but I like it
It looks great & sounds great. I personally prefer the forthcoming Testarossa, but I see the appeal of these Berlinetta Boxers.
+Pube well to each his own cause I personally adore the looks of the Testarossa lol. But there's just something about a Ferrari that isn't V-engined,it's a lot more special in a very strange way
Sexiest car ever. Leonardo Fioravanti masterpiece.
Typical Ferrari of the days when Enzo himself was still alive. Tiny, light, and pared down to the limit. Basically just a container for an engine, drivetrain, and a couple of humans. Exactly the same formula as the F40 from a generation later. Remember that the F40 was the last road car designed when the 'old man' was still alive. Since then, the name has just become an upmarket Fiat brand...
@@Trades46 this is the masterpiece of Ferrari classics along with Daytona (rear and front motor) after at that time legally street racing 250 series around 50's ending. New era begin and Testarossa was Pininfarina showcase of two compenetrating bodys answer to Bertone's Lamborghini Countach, one provocative as a stripper the other ideally sculptured as those masterpieces you can see here in Italy by Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Raffaello, Giotto and others. We were still in the period all Ferrari dressed only red Italian racing color and none have Scuderia badge on sides, stable is the meaning of "Scuderia" and also is the name of the racing F1 team Scuderia Ferrari so is false on production cars, 250 series have it cause that production cars can race and win Le Mans or Daytona or Sebring being a Scuderia Ferrari car. These were also gentlemen drivers time, they driven their Ferrari directly from home to track and win! Until last Enzo Ferrari approved F40 before Grande Vecchio (Great Old) died. I suggest you as beauty 12 cylinder the 599 not easy to drive fast beautiful front motor what Enzo considered the right place for an engine, and if you drive nowadays Ferrari naturally understandable onboard a Portofino or Roma.
Bye
Gotta love those Carbed flat 12s
Beautiful car, beautiful exhaust note
Starter said wooo. Glad that's over..sounds great.
Figuring it IS a 76 and multi carbed it would be easy to flood those cylinders. If it was started more often and owners actually drove their cars, it wouldnt be so bad
Easy to say drive it more when you dont pay own or maintain a v12 Ferrari. lol
When I was a kid back in the early-to-mid 70s our neighbors had a Jaguar XKE 12 cylinder. This reminds me of her trying to get it started every morning at 8:00a. Damn did that thing sing once it cleared its throat! I'm guessing they go through their fair share of starter motors over the years.
I just watch a full tank of gas empty out the exhaust before it even started lol
Genial!!!
Der faucht und qualmt wie eine alte Dampflock!!! ;-)
Super Video!
Ein wunderschönes Auto, mit den größten Blinklichtern (Front) in der Automobilgeschichte...
Ein Traum!
Great to hear that angry thing fire up! Strangely it sounds and looks like a Detroit 673 when starting, Awesome!!
we need more vids like these
Cool ride and sounds nice!!!
absolutly love the second part of your video discription! the car aint half bad either
These things have electric fuel pumps. Prime the carbs for 20 seconds and it should fire up immediately. Even after months of sitting. That's what I do and what works on my carb Ferrari V8 from the very same era. If it doesn't, it suffers issues.
Do this on a 365 GTB/4 Daytona and you can replace its weak starter, which is big $$$ and replacement a major PITA.
Best from Germany
Waking up a monster engine!
Congratulations for the car, it's a masterpiece. Anyway, I suggest a carburetors/fuel lines check ; after 2 months is really strange that the engine starts in that way.
@@mattjacomos2795 im pretty sure these are carbureted
It's fairly normal for an older carbureted car. I usually just repeat the process 20 seconds at a time for 3 or 4 tries instead of continually cranking though.
Actually, not at all.
After a certain amount of time, the fuel in the carb bowl evaporates so you must Franck the engine just to pump fuel from the tank to the carbs ... An electric fuel pump would be great help.
THE DEFINITIVE 1970'S SUPERCAR.
That really is a beautiful car
These ferrari's are absolutely beautiful ,a piece of automotive art :-)
Art????! My friend the bastard piece of junk barely started!!
@@gregorypowell8297 So what, if you had any old shit american car that was sitting half of it's life in some barn, would you still call it piece of junk if it didn't start?
That's why i love old carburated engines
I guess this was an early 512? I thought they were all FI.
love this video so much
not too sure if its the SAME car but I have a neighbor that has a flat 12 ferrari as well, these are pretty damn cool
LOVE THE SOUND OF A BOXER
Errr it's not a Boxer....
I'm pretty sure that procedure is awesome for filling the sump with petrol - way WAY too much fuel going on there, also explains why it clears up after being revved a bit
Eu amo esse vídeo desde os 15 anos! Ferrari amo demais!!
BB... the King of Ferrari
Guys there are six double carburetors (so 12) to synchronise manually with empty pumps (debimeter) etc. This is why many owners send it by plane to Maranello to check in factory. That engine revs to 7000 rpm (cause emission issues) not 5000 american v8 I love it, which fit better under a pickup hood indeed a sport car making one a cheetah and other a bull
Best starter I've ever heard...
I love this video only 14 years. 😻💘🇮🇹
Berlinetta bialbero come dice il suo progettista Forghieri😉
"Gaaaahhh.....WHO WOKE ME FROM MY SLUMBER??!!", shouted the Ferrari in a big rumble."I did! I did!" said the owner, eyes wide and drool all over.
-An excerpt from Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Ferrari Boxer-
Sounds good...
Sounds tempremental from cold, And I think when it fired up, didn't fire up all cylinders initialy. Great sound though.
Flame at 0:43
wow, we have come a long way
This start must be single handedly responsible for at least a 1.5 degree C temperature rise
It should start a lot easier than that, even when not driven for months, I have owned two Boxers, and never had such difficulty starting my cars once the carbs are balanced, and floats are set
Boxers? What are those?
@@ssherrierable When the pistons are opposed to each other. For example, in a straight 6, you have 6 cylinders all in a row, connected to the crankshaft; in a V6, half of the cylinders are at an angle compared to the other half, so you have 3 cylinders angled to one side of the engine, the other 3 angled toward the other side (if you Google a picture, you'll see more clearly); in a boxer, the cylinders are flat and completely opposed to each other, so in a boxer 6, you'd have 3 cylinders parallel to the ground, and the other 3 also parallel to the ground on the opposite side of the crankshaft.
It’s called boxer but this is not a boxer engine. This is a 180 degrees V12. Which is not exactly the same as a boxer.
reminds me at my riding lawnmower, have heard the last batch of Tecumseh engines where produced in Italy too.
1:00 is when it starts, classic vintage ferrari lol, great car though
everytime i watch this a smile creates itself between 0:55 and 1:05
Flat 12 glory!!
It's like waking up a monster during hibernation in a dark spooky cave
This is not as loud and obnoxious as some 4 bangers from recent history.
Sounds about right.
Came for the experts profferings in the comments section. So many experts yet so few Ferraris to pontificate over
man from 0:00 - 0:50 my ears cried :( but the secound 50 seconds are worth it
Awesome
nothing wrong with this engine, Wait till the fuel pomp has filled all carbs, now half of them are full and the other are empty. Give it time and great it with respect, its caracter of older boxermotors but ones it runs its amazing to hear. Nice video.
@xbowracing
Correct, I tried first, just to see how far away the engine was from starting... It really drives well, please see my new clip as well.
My word!!!! I Can smell the gas fumes from here!!!! And Im on the computer!!!
Well, I try to drive as much as possible, but not in winter, there is too much salt on the road =now :-(. That's why there will always be some long periods in the garage. It runs perfectly when driven regularly. Just ensure the battery is fully charged!
This is the car I use in Gran turismo 5
+EricTheCPUGuy Hey me too! Mines orange.
i dont care if it dont start , i still want one LOL especially a boxer
Jesus, that was a long crank. Great finish though!
Somebody give that starter motor a medal!
Driver: lets turn the key
Battery: easy task for my amps
Carburettors: we are sleepy, dont wanna wake up yet
Starter: am i a joke to you?
Ferrari motors are like this for that era, it's simply dampness in the ignition and the fuel in the carbs has gone stale or gone off for sitting a while, two remedies for this is to add fresh fuel or clean plugs prior to starting as the plugs end up soaking wet with old fuel, I know this because I have the same problem with my dino, but please go easy on that starter! you don't want to burn those brushes out premature as it's a pain and inconvenient when they do!plugs & fresh fuel sorts it.
When an old Dodge starts like that, what a pos. When it's a Ferrari, what a beauty.
Good heavens I'd hate if my cars started like that. They sit for months, a quick turn of the key and they purr to life.
This isn't to say you are wrong, because boxer is literally in the name from the factory. However, the engine is an H-12 but it isn't a boxer engine, it has 2 cylinders per crank pin and is essentially a 180° V12. A boxer engine has one per piston, it's the literal definition.
Meu Boxer está assim pra ligar também... é um fusca!
0:00 - 0:47 If you do not pay attention to the fact that this is a car, it seems that she got sick and sneezes, and it's rushes you to say - "Bless you dear!"))
I know this seems excessive but every video I see of these they rev the piss out of it like this on a cold start and then bam it's running perfect. Maybe these cars like it rough?
Those love to catch fire.
died of smoke inhalation before i heard the exhaust
Huge shout out to Italian engineering! 😂
The curse,having an old Ferrari...
Very rough sounding a few problems here did you change plugs?
Its first time i see a steam engine ferrari
Coughing out the sh!t before getting back on track :)
Next video! Ferrari starter replacement
@Noname1000r Very smart comment, your bicycle will appreciate you for it)
sounds like it is starving for air and the ignition system is weak. odd issue, never seen this with these.
❣️
El taller está en la acera de enfrente
i own a mondial t cabiolet, here in italy.and only thing i have to say is that this 512 looks fine for me.but i find amusing how some people compare a ferrari engin to a pickup truck
the old ferrari were designed to go fast and stay at highest rpm possible.to drive this thing in the traffic to long will cause damage...
and they are really hard to start, and you have to wait for the oil and water temperature to rise before moving the car.
sorru for mi english,i know it is not really good :D
Opposite cylinders doesn't necesarily mean it is a boxer, it's a 180° V12.
@xbowracing
What's the reason for that?
Bb actually stood for Bridgette Bardot
Smoke's just a little bit , It'll be fine.
Reminds me of a Sherman tank
Sexiest car ever. Leonardo Fioravanti masterpiece.
consumption: 1 liter of fuel/0.5 liter of oil
What brand battery is in the car? Battery never gave up
Sounds like an old diesel powered forklift if you could only hear the Sound it's what I'd guess it was lol
What causes that pop @ 1:31? Knock?
Cinderella poisoned the air so badly
Often heard the 5000mi dealer service on a mid/rear engine Italian supercar costs $5000-7000!
Engine was tuned in different conditions, it's probably too rich now hence the smoke. If it smelled of gas it was probably too rich...the partial cylinder firing 🔥also after it started as they cleared themselves out.
Il mio vecchio meccanico diceva che per andare forte bisogna farli benzina ai carburatori.
wow, she's a cold blooded old girl!
Est ce un 4.4 ou le 4.9 litre je crois 350 ch une bêtes
Is it a boxer engine.? Flat engine?
Massive IDF Webber's spitting and choking. The days when 5 Star Petrol was 50p a gallon.
Yeah those goddamn Weber's if you're not tuned right they are cranky bastards pun intended.
Just like in the 351 Cleveland same shit.
This Ferrari is so nice, but yeah, it needs a tune up.
sounds like my 1953 ferguson tractor...
