The reason the Empire is so popular and iconic, is because it's humanity. Human ingenuity, gunpowder, infantry and cavalry, pitted against a mash of all kinds of fantasy creatures borrowed from all kinds of fantasy and non fantasy worlds and countries, and it feels bloody amazing. Yeah they are "vanilla" because we actually have gunpowder and steel in our world, but in Warhammer, they epitomize what WE would be capable off when faced with demons, undead and rat people. That's the appeal, I love using guns and mortars to tear vampires a new one, I love obliterating rats with heavy cavalry. In LOTR, were you rooting for Sauron's armies at the siege of Gondor, with their Nazgul on Felbeasts, the orcs and trolls? Or where you hyped for wall mounted trebuchets crushing the armies of evil, the foot soldiers of Gondor who fought those crazy fantasy monsters despite the odds, with their city and wives and children at their back, the cavalry of Rohan riding to their death, just to take as many orcs down with them as they could? That's why the empire is cool.
Its always the most played faction in every game that offers humans and other fantasy or alien tropes because of what you just mentioned. Its easy to indentify with.
Aren't Dwarfs the most advanced race in the game ? i think the empires popularity is because of Karl Franz and it's lore , in your lord of the rings example i would root for the elves the same way i would root for the humans since their the good guys , and if the roles were reversed (orcs were good and humans were bad ) then i think we would root for the orcs . ithink our decision are based on what we are shown and how the story has made us empathise with the characters , regardles of their powers and race and look . the Kislevs ,Norscans and Bretonians are mostly humans, same as the empire but we don't see them being at the top , in fact in most polls Skaven is right after empire in terms of popularity and in some it even takes the first spot while bretonia is usualy somewhere in the middle , after many of the fantasy races like wood elves and dwarfs. so yea i think the reason empire is Iconic is that the Empire was Made to be the face of this game and was made to be Iconic , still this doesnt take anything away from its appeal . Empires lore is genuinely awesome.

Welcome! This is alot but it's the most fun universe ever! I started playing Warhammer tabletop in 2009 and haven't looked back since- including the books the lore gets so deep and the people are so awesome
*Me sending Wargheists to take down imperial artillery.* Well whadya know apparently they are! Though argument can be made I am also playing as Empire. Vlad is the legal elector count of Sylvania after all.
The Empire is really fun to play as for 2 reasons for me: 1. Karl Franz's voice acting is great, just the right balance between going ham and still offering some serious pathos. 2. The Empire is *the* quintessential combined arms-faction, it's just a blast to manually play with an army where every unit serves a specific purpose and the symphony of the teamwork is much greater than the individual parts.
I think my first will either be Ghorst since I was always fond of the little weirdo (the fact he now starts with a Mortis Engine is also rather compelling), or Grand Hierophant Khatep since he was my favorite Lord in 2.
Ghorst is probably going to be my first Immortal Empires start too, since I loved playing as him in 2 so much. When I do buy WH3, I wanna see Cathay and the Badlands, and conquering them as Ghorst sounds like perfect way to see the East!
Unrivaled Cav, peasant archer chess board backline with trebuchets and either Spearman or other lords as frontline. Additionally having pretty decent casting. I fucking loved my ME Bretonia playthrough.

Their cavalry is mediocre except for Grail knights (not guardians) and questing. Both of which are expensive. Their archers get outmatched by ANY faction with a decent amount of ranged. Their trebs have sucked ever since their accuracy got nerfed and they went from 4 models to 3. The Green Knight is is weak af since more than half the factions have a huge amount of magic or fire damage, and he's weak as heck to that. Their infantry is a joke. "Oh but that's Bretonnias whole thing" well whoopty friggin doo. Their thing is sucking. Yay. Their thing is SUPPOSED to be hammer and anvil. But unless you buy the joke of a Relique (easy to kill) they break incredibly easy. NOBODY is asking for them to be powerhouses. But when they can't even perform their role it's a joke. Their playstyle is predictable as heck. Spears, guns, and armor. Insta victory. Play as bretonnia against dwarves. It's a joke of a matchup. Seriously, foot knights. Game 1. Should've had them. And their lore is the worst thing about them. Apparently it USED to be good. But now their peasants get abused for the lols, the lords are supposedly chivalrous but all A-holes, and their entire Religion is essentially them getting tricked by an elf goddess who makes them protect the elf realm (despite constant wars with them?) all so they can become slave soldiers when they die... yey. Bretonnia SHOULD have been a high fantasy nation in a dark fantasy setting. What it ACTUALLY is, is a giant meme. Seriously, at first I thought all the "peasants are starving and taxed 90% plus they simp" was a joke... but it's the ACTUAL lore. Bretonnia sucks. Both in game and in lore. They need a massive update in both. Till then they're just dumb Empire.

I'm new to Warhammer and have been struggling to find a faction to play, as well as scratching my head over what to do after I lose my first army in the campaign. This was really helpful to put me on the right track.
I did an archeon campaign recently and it was so fun. Having access to all the chaos gods rosters and being able to pick the best from any with archeon himself being a powerhouse it was so much fun to crush kislev the empire and bretonia
Archaon the Everchosen. No soul, no matter how blackened or pure, shall see salvation. But this time I get to fuck up not only humans, but elves, ogres, daemons, vampires, pirates, lizardmen, dwarves…everything whilst having fun with the rework and feeling like an actual badass.

I went with norsca first and got bored quick then I tried out The Vampire counts with Manfred in his new southern vacation home. I must say I have never really enjoyed playing VC before now - it was a great location to start and I cleared all the way south and currently working my way toward my old home castle. The new raise dead recruitment is really nice because you can get late game monsters by turn 3-4. I might try out the dwarfs with the white dwarf and his new location. Volkmar and Grimgor will also be on my list of next to play. I love Skaven but I think I will save them for the next skaven dlc if we get one.
Colonel, sir please as soon as you can, do the new campaign and battle guides for the Warriors of Chaos teaching us all about the new lords, heroes and units.
My first was Ogres. Not the most complex faction, but that's a charm to me. The simplicity if beat face with uniformly big infantry is easy but also rewardingly conplex once ya get in the swing of throwing that fat around and cycle charging. Also cant tell if he is clowning or not on Ogres as a generally half baked faction.
Damn the character select is AWESOME i do hope they go back to the previous difficulty settings, where going to hard difficulty doesn't stunt your starting income.

I used to play Warhammer very casually with my non-casual cousins. I think the only time I beat one of them was using an army of Cold Ones lol. This game is bringing many memories!
