I’m a teen and I relate EXTREMELY well to both Kylo and Rey. That’s one of the reasons I ship them so much. I can relate to both and therefore I can see how a romance could play out because I see elements of myself in both characters.
You really get these characters. Time and time again things you've been discussing have come true, and more will be coming true on the big screen in just a few weeks. Waiting isn't usually this much fun, but the road to The Last Jedi continues to be a good time thanks to this wonderful community.
Take Loki and Thor in all the marvel movies. Would you say that Loki in Thor 1 was 100% portrayed as an antagonist? Obviously not. Did be stay a clear cut antagonist? Nope. Even though the norse mythology forces him into the role of a trickster there are elements of complexity in him. Just like in Kylo. People who think Kylo ren is Darth Vader with daddy issues arent paying attention.

There's a well-known phrase that says, "Love and hate are the two sides of the same coin" (because both deal with passion). And to me, Kylo Ren reminds me the most of someone who is passionate but doesn't know how to control it (like Anakin). ;) Many of the great love stories is when the characters start hating each other but end up loving each other when they fully know the "monster's" backstory . See Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen . ;) Remember a princess fell in love with a smuggler. Why can't a fallen prince fall in love with a scavenger?
The last bit of the trailer is just there for one reason and it is this: "How can we get this idea into peoples heads without spoiling key plotpoints in the movie?" -Disney The fact that no Kylo/Rey shot where they are both on screen is actually in the trailer tells me that they're central to the plot and can't be shown without spoiling a ton. Daisy Ridley and Rian Jonsson werent kidding when they said that this movie is going places and that not everyone will be happy with Reys choices at first. It's a way to soften the ground for when the movie lands so critics and fans won't go completely crazy, i don't think its an accident that the marketing material sells Kylo and Rey as a team either.
i love that you guys really genuinely want to analyze and predict as opposed to regurgitating information like a lot of other star wars youtubers. i agree with your theories and they're all encompassing in regards to the people creating the movie and what has happened in the past with the studios because that is an important factor. i'm glad you don't rest on the laurels of the existing expanded universe to make your predictions.

Reminds me of some guys who said they were weirdly attracted to Kylo's saber. Yeah, because it's meant to be that way. They're connoting something very specific with those shots. Notice how in the snow fight, Rey brings the saber elbow level and ignites it and Kylo brings it down to his waist. Anyways, I loved the episode and I agreed with most of what you guys said. I still don't think there's going to be a kiss but your excitement was contagious! I also think that there's some course correcting going on with the trailer. They've been so quiet about Rey and Kylo's relationship, even just as an antagonistic one, and it's been glaring to notice. It was almost like they were telling media outlets to not ask about it. Then Rian's quotes came out but people were still ignoring it for the most part. That trailer did it's job. It opened the conversation about Rey and Kylo's relationship WIDE open. It'll be interesting to see what they'll do these next two months.

When I watched the trailer I totally freaked! I loved it and I love this video. There are so many different opinions and theories out there, but I guess we are just going to have to wait for the movie, which has turned out to be torture. I try not to have any theories of what's going to happen because I don't want to be disappointed. But Reylo is not something that I'm unsure of at all anymore. There are so many great things about the trailer, but something that just makes my heart and cause my breathing to stop is that Kylo's outstretched hand was SHAKING! That's what makes me think he is reaching out his hand to Rey. Very interesting and wonderful podcast. Thank you so much for making it 💙❤️
I couldn't hardly wait for this analysis, as soon as I saw the notification I just clicked. You girls have me addicted to your episodes. I don't think they are gonna kiss in this movie I think it's going to work around their connection and how both are going to know each other better. It seems to me they'll teaming up but God knows how, in this way they are going to have us in the next to years, wondering how it would be: dark or light side for both? What if the 'raylo shot' is her talking to luke, but him talking to her in a force vision? Look behind kylo, its falling fire and general destruction. So what if she sees his blow up at the academy (maybe kylo is actually showing her something luke didnt tell her about) and she can now finally see him as a flawed human, maybe sympathize, and thats when he offers his hand in aid?
After having thought ALL of these things about reylo and the direction of the ST, having listened and enjoyed ALL your brilliantly analytical and fun podcasts, and being a part of this incredible fandom - after all of the accusations and bs that we've had to put up with for 2 years for using our eyes, our heads and our knowledge as not only reylos but as Star Wars fans - this trailer and those last two shots made my heart grow three sizes (I think we all adore Rian Johnson at this point, and I'm so glad you guys have come around on the Porgs, I love em' - they remind me of pugs!) *Vindication is wonderful (though not entirely surprising)!!!* I'm here for the emotional connection and don't mind waiting for IX, but I will be so happy if they do kiss. I almost choked on my tea when I saw that teaser shot of Kylo with his "lightsaber" hehe oh Disney and its phallic imagery + I'm with you Denise, watching such denial spread through some people just makes me evilly throw my head back and cackle - must be those dark side cookies. I also have a feeling that when Snoke is actually torturing Rey (not the 'torture' of "you're my guest"), Kylo is most likely standing behind and that's who Snoke's shouting at to "fufill you're destiny" aka he wants Kylo to kill Rey - and that's when Kylo snaps - I have a feeling the "angry grip" shot, the shot of Kylo from the first teaser with his lightsaber up as if ready to go at someone, and then his eventual reaching out to Rey are all in the same sequence. Absolutely ingenious as always guys, can't wait for more.
I love your insights...I personally love reylo because I really identify with Ben Solo...more specifically, we have the same myers briggs personality type, or INFP, and it's amazing to witness all of the psychological aspects of Star Wars characters...I would love it if you did some kind of psychological video explaining the motives and views of the characters or psychological aspects that the star wars writers use to write their characters

Wonderful podcast, as usual. I was so eager to hear your opinions and I had so much fun listening. You're like the SW friends I don't have in real life. I especially loved your points about some scenes actually being reminiscent of LOTR and horror genre visuals. I hadn't thought about it that way before! This trailer was a marvel. And it's so hilarious how much we all adore Rian when we haven't even seen the film yet. And I agree about the alleged "massacre" actually being the equivalent of some kind of potential force poltergeist that Kylo couldn't control. Everything looks so intriguing and I'm so excited. I didn't think it was possible for me to become more enthusiastic about TLJ, but this trailer did it for me. By the way, I adored Denise's commentary about the "Kylo reaching out" scene possibly being from different times and places, yet having intentional parallels to each other in terms of lighting, background, tone, etc. Her "question posed, question answered" idea is one of the best analyses for this part of the trailer I've seen! It clicked right into place in my mind like a puzzle piece. Thank you for putting into words what I couldn't quite express on my own.
After seeing the movie, this idea of not knowing exactly what happen at the temple is still plausible and something to work with. Luke's unreliable pov (he was passed out under rubble) and Kylo's truncated pov because he's not telling his side completely means that Rey can still find out later that kylo wasn't the culprit who killed Luke's younglings or padawans or whatever rank they had. These events may not have gone the way they think they did! Kylo's version for sure doesn't take into account Luke's hesitation. Luke's doesn't take into account any unknown circumstances that could have transpired when he was out. I'm so excited! Where the Fan fiction when u need it. I don't have the knack or I'd do it myself.

There are layers upon layers of all that, intensely strong under currents, and classic fairy tail tropes and motifs at play in SW, and I love it. And then it was yep! Evidence so far: interest if not familiarity, carrying her in, "my guest," and (sealing it up) smoldering but shy looks mean only one thing! Bwahahaha! It's still Fantastic!
I think the scene where he extends his hand to her happens after the Snoke torture and (hopefully) fight with the guards. The ship is under attack, Snoke has fled, and as everything is falling apart around them, he holds out his hand. 'Come with me.' We'll see!

That was something that I had been thinking for a while now. Kylo destroyed Luke's new Jedi order, but it doesn't mean he killed everybody. Maybe the other knights of ren are former students too. But for some reason they followed Kylo when he left Luke. Just a though that popped into my mind.
Thanks so much for the podcast as always! I was so giddy watching it and I agree with you guys that it seems LF is setting things straight. I was very pleased on how the trailer´s focus was mostly about Kylo & Rey discovering who they really are and getting there through their connection. Plus that ending scene was just the cherry on top! Even if they are different scenes the implication was done on purpose. They want the general audience to start thinking about the Reylo possibility. I was actually going to ask you if you guys felt that a romance/kiss was even more likely now but you answered that too! Even though I don´t want to get my hopes up it all points out that they will indeed have at least one kiss. And I am going to scream in the theater! These are good times! Cannot wait for December!
I'm with you on there potentially being a kiss. I'm the optimistic type always willing to take risks and I definitely think they are going big for this movie. No telling how it's going to end. From what I understand Rian left the story line in a big mess. LOL! That could mean quite a lot of things. ;) I'm ready for the angst and the backstory! I'm ready for Ben's redemption arc going all out and shocking everyone! Who knows, he could attempt to sacrifice himself to save others and leave us totally shook!
Everyone says the scene with Kylo extending his hand to Rey is pieced together because of her clothes. But what if she switches back to that outfit after some point in the film? A scar is a clear indication of a linear progression of time, but clothing can be changed back and forth. What she wears is for travel, she wears it to get to Luke. What if she changes to her training garb for her potentially failed training with Luke, but when she decides to seek other training, she changes back to her traveling clothes to seek out Kylo. Then the torture scene with Snoke, she’s back in her training clothes to train with Kylo when Snoke intervenes. I could be totally wrong (standard back peddling, ass-covering disclaimer), but the thought just came to me when I rewatched this analysis. I don’t think the characters in SW are particularly known for many outfit changes within a movie, but maybe TLJ spans a longer period of time than TFA.
Toni Johnson also Obi-wan’s playlist hints at a female (Rey) Kenobi - ‘Lola’, ‘Judy *in Disguise*’ and love songs like ‘Happy Together’...I definitely got the secret message vibe from those songs.

And now the trailer which I was expecting to not have any Reylo in it, was basically all we've been saying for the last two years and in case people weren't paying enough attention they throw that ending to us xD At this point you have to be blind not to see it

i was listening to this again and i just noticed all the hype and fangirling hahaha this is great and hilarious, i wish i could go to watch the movie with another reylos, nobody of my friends ships this :( it would be fun to be with other reylos out there
14:30 I agree and think KR is much more powerful than portrayed in TFA...what we saw was probably a purposely (by Snoke) drained and ‘auto-pilot’ mode KR being sacrificed...Snoke probably drains his power like a vampire to stay ‘alive’ and we haven’t really seen his best yet, but maybe Luke has...that’s my guess. :) And I suspect Hux betrays KR and joins DJ’s character to trap and attack Leia, using captured Rey/Finn as bait. I think KR loses his cool and his religion (smashes helmet) after his Mom conveys through the Force that she’s gravely injured, and he revolts and takes out some First Order troops causing Snoke to banish him on one last chance ‘succeed or die’ mission to destroy Luke...but KR is secretly more interested in the Skywalker lightsaber and restoring his birthright than enabling Snoke (with new maternal guilt and hopes of a ‘girl’ who can break the curse and bring his proverbial holy grail lightsaber)...Rey is seduced by Snoke’s manipulation (torturing her friends) into betraying Luke and getting the saber to Snoke this time to save them, but it was a trap as well that she doesn’t get out from this time unscathed...and of course only KR can defeat Snoke, and only with Luke’s lightsaber (Luke’s blessing, passing the torch)...which unknown to KR wasn’t the same saber Rey has in TFA (I’m guessing)...the twist being that it’s really Kenobi’s saber. Maybe she unwittingly destroys the temple and has similar issues as KR in controlling her power like you said, and that’s the point where she becomes less loved or even hated by the ‘good’ powers that be and KR becomes her only hope - only one who understands - for redemption in a twist of fate (the outstretched hand scene).
Susan Miller we saw him being very powerful tho - he could have killed Rey multiple times and didn't - he was also emotionally destroyed after killing his father and shot in the gut by a nuclear crossbow - imagine a boxing match where the superior opponent is shot by a shotgun in the stomach before the match
I think the Rey torture scene may be a force vision of what is happening to Kylo. And the fight scene with the praetorian guards is also a vision of kylo. The behind the scenes shows them learning the same choreography, maybe she is mimicking his movements Because it is really just him fighting. I think he is being trained in this scene.
Actually I see it like Lee. I loved every shot of the trailer and even Poe. But the speech was not essential. Idk I didn't like it. So we both are in the same boat ;) And by the end of the trailer I freaked out, like every Reylo shipper did.
I totally think that their relationship is at the center of the trilogy but I don't think they will finish together or kiss in this movie. If it happens it will be in the last. But they might team up at the end of this movie I also hope they have some kind of force bond

About the line when Kylo says :" let the past die..etc" i think the trailer wants to show us the kylo' s conflict about Leia. They want we believe he will murder his mom but i don' t think so. I think this can be the moment in which he'll decide to turn to the light..but i don't know how they resolve the Carrie Fisher's question :(((
Random thought: the shots we see of kylo in his ship going after Leia or what ever he is doing. Im betting thats the opening scene...so what if in his hesitation in killing his mom, he just jerks his hand away from the trigger and leaves the battle in turmoil.....maybe seeking out a certain someone in his confusion? So while there he has a bit of a friendlier connection with Ray but is forceblocked by Luke and leaves. So later when he maybe sees Snoke torture Ray, his ambivilence towards the light reaches a tipping point....and he leaves that audience smashing his mask and maybe saving Ray (hence the hints we have seen both of them fighting pretorian guards), and we close out the episode on Ben having maybe a uncontious Ray in his ship and an unsure fate. Id say that would be a cool place to open ep. 9 and maybe serve as a reverse mirror of the end of tfa.
I totally agree with adamlunkq... the Star Wars connection gals have been on target since a very long time ago in a galaxy far away!!!... (sorry could'nt help myself).. My comment is in regards to this last trailer and the words spoken by Kylo. "Let the past die" sounds as thought taken out of context to the next words "Kill it" which at the umpteenth listening of this trailer; could be Snoke? "If you have to, that's the only way to become what you were meant to be" afterwards sounds like Adam Driver's voice spoken in the same breath. Maybe this is what he says inTLJ film before he gives out his hand to Rey? Anyone else while listening to this trailer (ignoring the images) think similarly by chance?
Ya know how you guys were saying how the temple destruction might not have been planned? That maybe it was an accident because Kylo found out something? It's actually revealed in the novel Bloodline by Claudia Gray that he had no clue that Vader was his grandfather. But the news breaks and such and then Leia has to tell him. So maybe...? That's what that is? Just a thought.

When I watched the trailer I totally freaked! I loved it and I love this video. There are so many different opinions and theories out there, but I guess we are just going to have to wait for the movie, which has turned out to be torture. I try not to have any theories of what's going to happen because I don't want to be disappointed. But Reylo is not something that I'm unsure of at all anymore.
There are so many great things about the trailer, but something that just makes my heart and cause my breathing to stop is that Kylo's outstretched hand was SHAKING! That's what makes me think he is reaching out his hand to Rey.

What if the 'raylo shot' is her talking to luke, but him talking to her in a force vision? Look behind kylo, its falling fire and general destruction. So what if she sees his blow up at the academy (maybe kylo is actually showing her something luke didnt tell her about) and she can now finally see him as a flawed human, maybe sympathize, and thats when he offers his hand in aid?

After having thought ALL of these things about reylo and the direction of the ST, having listened and enjoyed ALL your brilliantly analytical and fun podcasts, and being a part of this incredible fandom - after all of the accusations and bs that we've had to put up with for 2 years for using our eyes, our heads and our knowledge as not only reylos but as Star Wars fans - this trailer and those last two shots made my heart grow three sizes (I think we all adore Rian Johnson at this point, and I'm so glad you guys have come around on the Porgs, I love em' - they remind me of pugs!)

I'm here for the emotional connection and don't mind waiting for IX, but I will be so happy if they do kiss. I almost choked on my tea when I saw that teaser shot of Kylo with his "lightsaber" hehe oh Disney and its phallic imagery + I'm with you Denise, watching such denial spread through some people just makes me evilly throw my head back and cackle - must be those dark side cookies. I also have a feeling that when Snoke is actually torturing Rey (not the 'torture' of "you're my guest"), Kylo is most likely standing behind and that's who Snoke's shouting at to "fufill you're destiny" aka he wants Kylo to kill Rey - and that's when Kylo snaps - I have a feeling the "angry grip" shot, the shot of Kylo from the first teaser with his lightsaber up as if ready to go at someone, and then his eventual reaching out to Rey are all in the same sequence.
Absolutely ingenious as always guys, can't wait for more.

I especially loved your points about some scenes actually being reminiscent of LOTR and horror genre visuals. I hadn't thought about it that way before! This trailer was a marvel. And it's so hilarious how much we all adore Rian when we haven't even seen the film yet.
And I agree about the alleged "massacre" actually being the equivalent of some kind of potential force poltergeist that Kylo couldn't control. Everything looks so intriguing and I'm so excited. I didn't think it was possible for me to become more enthusiastic about TLJ, but this trailer did it for me.
By the way, I adored Denise's commentary about the "Kylo reaching out" scene possibly being from different times and places, yet having intentional parallels to each other in terms of lighting, background, tone, etc. Her "question posed, question answered" idea is one of the best analyses for this part of the trailer I've seen! It clicked right into place in my mind like a puzzle piece. Thank you for putting into words what I couldn't quite express on my own.
After seeing the movie, this idea of not knowing exactly what happen at the temple is still plausible and something to work with. Luke's unreliable pov (he was passed out under rubble) and Kylo's truncated pov because he's not telling his side completely means that Rey can still find out later that kylo wasn't the culprit who killed Luke's younglings or padawans or whatever rank they had. These events may not have gone the way they think they did! Kylo's version for sure doesn't take into account Luke's hesitation. Luke's doesn't take into account any unknown circumstances that could have transpired when he was out.

I think the scene where he extends his hand to her happens after the Snoke torture and (hopefully) fight with the guards. The ship is under attack, Snoke has fled, and as everything is falling apart around them, he holds out his hand. 'Come with me.' We'll see!

That was something that I had been thinking for a while now. Kylo destroyed Luke's new Jedi order, but it doesn't mean he killed everybody. Maybe the other knights of ren are former students too. But for some reason they followed Kylo when he left Luke.

Thanks so much for the podcast as always! I was so giddy watching it and I agree with you guys that it seems LF is setting things straight. I was very pleased on how the trailer´s focus was mostly about Kylo & Rey discovering who they really are and getting there through their connection. Plus that ending scene was just the cherry on top! Even if they are different scenes the implication was done on purpose. They want the general audience to start thinking about the Reylo possibility. I was actually going to ask you if you guys felt that a romance/kiss was even more likely now but you answered that too! Even though I don´t want to get my hopes up it all points out that they will indeed have at least one kiss. And I am going to scream in the theater! These are good times! Cannot wait for December!

Everyone says the scene with Kylo extending his hand to Rey is pieced together because of her clothes. But what if she switches back to that outfit after some point in the film? A scar is a clear indication of a linear progression of time, but clothing can be changed back and forth. What she wears is for travel, she wears it to get to Luke. What if she changes to her training garb for her potentially failed training with Luke, but when she decides to seek other training, she changes back to her traveling clothes to seek out Kylo. Then the torture scene with Snoke, she’s back in her training clothes to train with Kylo when Snoke intervenes. I could be totally wrong (standard back peddling, ass-covering disclaimer), but the thought just came to me when I rewatched this analysis. I don’t think the characters in SW are particularly known for many outfit changes within a movie, but maybe TLJ spans a longer period of time than TFA.
Have you ladies checked out the official Spotify playlists for Kylo and Rey? Pretty interesting song choices (found that on another TH-cam channel).
Toni Johnson also Obi-wan’s playlist hints at a female (Rey) Kenobi - ‘Lola’, ‘Judy *in Disguise*’ and love songs like ‘Happy Together’...I definitely got the secret message vibe from those songs.

Look, the moment Disney decided to sell a Reylo Barbie set it's a done deal! And now the trailer which I was expecting to not have any Reylo in it, was basically all we've been saying for the last two years and in case people weren't paying enough attention they throw that ending to us xD At this point you have to be blind not to see it

14:30 I agree and think KR is much more powerful than portrayed in TFA...what we saw was probably a purposely (by Snoke) drained and ‘auto-pilot’ mode KR being sacrificed...Snoke probably drains his power like a vampire to stay ‘alive’ and we haven’t really seen his best yet, but maybe Luke has...that’s my guess. :)
And I suspect Hux betrays KR and joins DJ’s character to trap and attack Leia, using captured Rey/Finn as bait. I think KR loses his cool and his religion (smashes helmet) after his Mom conveys through the Force that she’s gravely injured, and he revolts and takes out some First Order troops causing Snoke to banish him on one last chance ‘succeed or die’ mission to destroy Luke...but KR is secretly more interested in the Skywalker lightsaber and restoring his birthright than enabling Snoke (with new maternal guilt and hopes of a ‘girl’ who can break the curse and bring his proverbial holy grail lightsaber)...Rey is seduced by Snoke’s manipulation (torturing her friends) into betraying Luke and getting the saber to Snoke this time to save them, but it was a trap as well that she doesn’t get out from this time unscathed...and of course only KR can defeat Snoke, and only with Luke’s lightsaber (Luke’s blessing, passing the torch)...which unknown to KR wasn’t the same saber Rey has in TFA (I’m guessing)...the twist being that it’s really Kenobi’s saber.
Maybe she unwittingly destroys the temple and has similar issues as KR in controlling her power like you said, and that’s the point where she becomes less loved or even hated by the ‘good’ powers that be and KR becomes her only hope - only one who understands - for redemption in a twist of fate (the outstretched hand scene).
Susan Miller we saw him being very powerful tho - he could have killed Rey multiple times and didn't - he was also emotionally destroyed after killing his father and shot in the gut by a nuclear crossbow - imagine a boxing match where the superior opponent is shot by a shotgun in the stomach before the match

I think the Rey torture scene may be a force vision of what is happening to Kylo. And the fight scene with the praetorian guards is also a vision of kylo. The behind the scenes shows them learning the same choreography, maybe she is mimicking his movements Because it is really just him fighting. I think he is being trained in this scene.

Actually I see it like Lee. I loved every shot of the trailer and even Poe. But the speech was not essential. Idk I didn't like it. So we both are in the same boat ;) And by the end of the trailer I freaked out, like every Reylo shipper did.
I totally think that their relationship is at the center of the trilogy but I don't think they will finish together or kiss in this movie. If it happens it will be in the last. But they might team up at the end of this movie

About the line when Kylo says :" let the past die..etc" i think the trailer wants to show us the kylo' s conflict about Leia. They want we believe he will murder his mom but i don' t think so. I think this can be the moment in which he'll decide to turn to the light..but i don't know how they resolve the Carrie Fisher's question :(((
Random thought: the shots we see of kylo in his ship going after Leia or what ever he is doing. Im betting thats the opening scene...so what if in his hesitation in killing his mom, he just jerks his hand away from the trigger and leaves the battle in turmoil.....maybe seeking out a certain someone in his confusion? So while there he has a bit of a friendlier connection with Ray but is forceblocked by Luke and leaves. So later when he maybe sees Snoke torture Ray, his ambivilence towards the light reaches a tipping point....and he leaves that audience smashing his mask and maybe saving Ray (hence the hints we have seen both of them fighting pretorian guards), and we close out the episode on Ben having maybe a uncontious Ray in his ship and an unsure fate. Id say that would be a cool place to open ep. 9 and maybe serve as a reverse mirror of the end of tfa.

My comment is in regards to this last trailer and the words spoken by Kylo. "Let the past die" sounds as thought taken out of context to the next words "Kill it" which at the umpteenth listening of this trailer; could be Snoke? "If you have to, that's the only way to become what you were meant to be" afterwards sounds like Adam Driver's voice spoken in the same breath.
Maybe this is what he says inTLJ film before he gives out his hand to Rey? Anyone else while listening to this trailer (ignoring the images) think similarly by chance?

Ya know how you guys were saying how the temple destruction might not have been planned? That maybe it was an accident because Kylo found out something? It's actually revealed in the novel Bloodline by Claudia Gray that he had no clue that Vader was his grandfather. But the news breaks and such and then Leia has to tell him. So maybe...? That's what that is? Just a thought.
I highly doubt that it was a spur the moment thing of Kylo Ren to murder his fellow Jedi and betray his family and everything they fought for.
