    Rey runs after Kylo Ren because of what she sees in her vision in the hut....that we don't get to see. But it moves her to tears, and that what speaks volumes. There's more to it then just her seeing him turn. She saw them together. Like Kylo saw them standing together (they saw the same thing, they just interpreted differently....and wrongly) Rey connects to Kylo in a way she never had with someone before. And what she saw, whatever it was, she wanted it now. right then and there and ran to him to make that vision happen.

    "See ya around kid" Is what Han always said to Luke. So It was so appropriate for him to give that nod to Han. I'm sure Ben recognized his dad's phrase.

    I thought the symbolism of Luke’s lightsaber being torn apart was absolutely beautiful. Kylo and Rey had equal pull over it this time. That shows a definite shift from the force awakens. It was like a mirror. The lightsaber didn’t know who to go to, so it went to both.

    • @Sorine9
      @Sorine9 7 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Even the lightsaber ships Reylo. Saber be like "c'mon guys I love you both".

      Yea, I noticed that too. I thought it was interesting that it was struggling between both of them not knowing who to go to, so Ben has made some shift and so has Rey. Interesting. I thought I was the only one. Thanks.

      Julia Crawford I loved this scene, I kept thinking now that the crystal is broken, if Rey were to use it to build her own lightsaber then it would mirror Kylo's unhinged saber look! That would be interesting to see

    Ok, a lot of people has problem with portrial of Luke in this film. I understand. But - I think that it's perfection. EVERYONE has darkness inside - and Luke is Vader's son after all. Lets remember that for a moment he wanted to kill Vader in ROTJ... Why did he ignite the saber here? Because he saw a Dark Side bomb ticking and ready to destroy everything. Luke was responsible for all of his padawans, and in Ben he saw darkness different than in Vader. Vader thought he lost everything, so love for a child could bring him back. Ben at some point was darker than his grandfather - he had a family and yet he turned, killed his father. Luke saw how mindscrewed Ben became and that saving him is beyond his power so igniting the saber was like a "lesser evil" for a moment to protect other padawans. But Luke's fear ultimately became the tool of what he was afraid of. Just like Anakins fear for Padme led to her death. Luke is like icon of compassion and good, so when people saw his moment of weakness its like cognitive dissonance. People were not ready for this film in my opinion. I love that controversy and dramatism, but then I also understand some people just can't accept this vision and it's totally okay.

      Thank you for bringing this up so perfectly expressed. I completely agree with your view on Luke; it is also understandable that many fans feel disappointed because they idealized this character so much and for so long, they weren't ready to see him portrayed as a human prone to err. To me, that makes his development as a character far more interesting , but that is just my opinion.

      This was so thoughtfully written - you were able to perfectly sum up my thoughts on the subject, and it was wonderful to read such a great summary of a very complicated story line. I do hope that as people re-watch the movie they will feel differently with each reflection of it's content.

    I have to agree with Denise with the touching of fingers, it felt to me like a symbolism of being touched for the first time that can be interrupted as a loss of virginity, Rey inhaling, her tears, and even Luke bursting in on them was very much like a parent interrupting a naughty moment. I also, viewed Rey and Kylo in this film as being very similar to Jane and Edward from Jane Eyre. The deep connection, the confession and then the loss, when Kylo was offering Rey his hand I couldn't help but think about Edward's plea to Jane after she finds out he's deceitful and she leaves him because of it. Love hearing your thoughts ladies, can't wait for more. I also think this film was great for Reylo :)

    Rian didn't know that the public would be obsessing over these things such as Rey's parents and Snoke. He wrote it before TFA was even a movie. I don't believe he was just tearing apart people's fan theories on purpose because they weren't even fan theories yet.

      A lot of people are calling it trolling but I don't think they're considering the timing. Rian Johnson couldn't have had the time to develop a script that caters to these theories, just to rip them down, while these theories were being developed by the internet. It's just not possible to write a massive, expensive, time consuming script and direct his evil trolling plot at the same time he's shooting the movie.

    • @stoleyourmateria
      @stoleyourmateria 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      yeah i wanted to point this out too. TLJ was written when TFA was in pre-productions. you can tell by interviews that the cast is also kind of baffled by what people have latched onto from TFA.

    • @ericamerica1789
      @ericamerica1789 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jake Skywalker I think OP meant Rian Johnsonwas working on the Ep 8 script before TFA was released in Dec 2015, which is correct. Johnson was approached by Kennedy while TFA was in production, and he confirmed as early as August 2014 he was writing and directing 8.

    Reylo is definitely safe and sound. I'm confident it'll continue in the next film and here's why. With Rey & Ben, you have to look beneath the surface of what the characters are saying and focus on their actions. At that point, their attraction becomes apparent and genuine. For example, when Rey tells Luke she's going to try to turn Ben to the light so he can be ally to the Resistance. That might be one thought on the surface, but no one would risk their life by flinging their space pod into a First Order ship unless it's for someone you have strong feelings for. When the pod opens and you see Rey's face when she sees Ben, it's all written there. They were both so alone for so long, the force connection was enough to bring them together. Then she enters his personal space in the elevator and when she says his real name for the first time, his eyes react and almost seem to flicker. After the lightsaber dual, you'll notice that once Ben extends his hand to Rey and asks her to join him, she already starts to cry at this point even before he mentions that her parents were nobodies. Why cry for someone you were only there to recruit for your cause? I think it was beautifully done. It's subtle, but all the evidence is there. I'll end by saying I love listening in. You ladies are the best!

    Wow, I love you guys' interpretation of the shirtless scene as Rey observing Kylo as a man instead of a monster. Does anyone else see the Pride and Prejudice parallels? Rey and Ben are in many ways like Lizzie and Darcy. In Pride and Prejudice Darcy's the rich guy and Lizzie's the poor girl, and he's intrigued by her vivacious nature and she pretty much hates him. Kylo/Rey TFA. Then in TLJ Rey starts to change her mind about Kylo by being with him more, Kylo falls in love but doesn't want to admit the weakness and asks for her hand. Very similar to Darcy's proposal where he trashes Elizabeth's family but says "marry me" and that he can't live without her--which is against his better judgement. Rey and Elizabeth's rejection of awful proposals are the same. They refuse to be told they aren't good enough, that they aren't "nothing" proving their equality to Kylo/Darcy egotistical arch types. So if reylo keeps mirroring that storyline in the 9th film, Kylo Ren will have to change himself to get Rey back. He'll spend a lot of time trying to redeem himself in her eyes...and in my opinion he definitely has his work cut out for him. I'm just nervous that this ship will end up really tragic because I mean he killed his father, and other padawans, how are they going to justify that? And how will Rey be able to forgive him?

      He turns back she'll understand it as he was under the influence of others, which us true. Give him better clarification about his grandfather can help him too. Grandpa waa horrible but he came around too. So she'll see jis redeeming qualities. Of course most others won't, right away.

    Quick thing. How you were all talking about how Reylo breaking apart and Ben realizing that power doesn't make him happy, was I the only one who thought of the Beauty and the Beast connection? Because in the (Disney) story, Belle leaves the Beast twice. The first time she leaves then goes back to him because he's hurt or needs her. So, that would be the battle on Starkiller in TFA because she eventually comes back to him TLJ to help him. However, the second time Belle leaves and the Beast let's her go since he thinks it would make her happy, but Belle cares for the Beast. That is the end of TLJ. Ben could have easily followed the Falcon and forced her back to his side, but because he valued her wanting to be happy (even if she's angry with him) he let's her go. However, Rey still cares for Ben even if she thinks he betrayed her.

    • @RepublicTrooper125

      I also feel he felt that way. I also interpret him telling the stormtroopers to stand outside as him trying to shield Rey. I think he may have thought that she was in the room. When He notices that he merely feels her presence he tries to plead with her to stay. Ofcourse Rey can't do that. After she closes the door our last shot of Ben is him kneeling on the floor looking sad. It's similar to how Vader was looking thoughtful and sad that Luke got away. It's like poetry it rhymes.

      Vader had killed a bunch of people by then (including Jedi and Younglings), and he was threatening to turn Leia to the dark side. Ben had not done anything wrong, he just had darkness in him, at that time he was an innocent young man. I just believe Luke would not have tried to strike Ben down, but Rian's version is canon....

    I thought you guys would be unanimously delighted! I know you guys have different opinions, but I'm still stuck on the fact that Reylo is happening, like, it's likely to really happen in IX, and they have set the fans up for it so successfully that I actually think people will root for them. I mean, that bears such a contrast to the way people talked about them before

    • @reynobody2003
      @reynobody2003 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The audience rooted for Ben Solo at the cinema when he turned on Snoke to save Rey. They cheered and clapped for him because, like Rey, they long for him to overcome his resentment towards his family and find peace, redemption, hope, and belonging with Rey! He is the last of the Skywalkers after all. That is why the ending of 8 was so bittersweet. Ben's story resonates with many people because even though he has royally messed up, we long for him to see the error of his ways and choose love over hate and power. I believe his redemption will come in episode 9, though only after some internal suffering; episode 8 was just a foretaste of the awesomeness that is yet to come.

    About Rey/Poe thing. I was a little scared about it's possibility at first, but now I have a theory about how it can actually help Reylo: Poe is very charming and friendly. Rey is not only very special but also quite a beauty. So I think that maybe Poe will try to flirt with her and stuff, and at first Rey would be intrigued, but soon she will realize that she not only wants to save Ben Solo, but she actually has romantic feelings for him. I don't think that Rey fully realizes this in Tlj, and interactions with Poe will make her think "Yeah, this Poe guy is great, but it's not him I want to be with". Something like that^^

      Juli Yashka & Myka Gary I like your thinking. I had thought too....if JJ Abrams has the *nerve* to put little Poe/Rey moments in the next film [and I wouldn't put it past him so get ready], Kylo should be made to call out Rey on that and let her know that ''he isn't what she needs...and she knows it''. I don't want to say too much on what could possibly happen, cause we should know by now our theories could be dashed against the rocks when the movie comes out.
      But in order for Kylo Ren to truly become Ben again, there will have to be a betrayal on the First Order's side that puts Kylo's life in danger and pushes Rey into action...to save Ben and bring him over to the Light. Personally I hope that happens in the second arc of the story, with Lukes help since he needs to atone for that BIG f**kup with his nephew, but it's just one of the ways I can see ''Reylo'' becoming a true thing because in order for it to happen they HAVE to be together on the same side to truly connect other than thru the force bond.
      Any thoughts cause I'm entering rambling territory here...

    • @danascholle5179
      @danascholle5179 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I could definitely see Poe being used to further a romantic drama simply by being perceived by Kylo as a rival for Rey's heart. Poe is everything people expected out of Ben, handsome, witty and charming, adored, forgiven (hell, he staged a mutiny and was welcomed back with loving arms and trusted. Everyone assumes the very worst out of Ben even when he was younger and hadn't actually done anything). Leia treats him like a surrogate son, HIS replacement. I imagine that would just burn Kylo up to see Rey spending time with Perfect Poe Dameron.

    Only on the second viewing I realized the film Rian was trying to make. It's risky to do all the things he did, it's not perfect, but, I feel he was very creative and subtle. Writing and directing a film of this magnitude is almost superhuman, I've written and directed a few short films- it's not easy- and it definitely is not easy to please everyone every time. His film making will hold up over time bc he really does have all the elements of a fun, thoughtful, action packed movie. Just bc die hard fans take offense with his risks does not mean this movie doesn't rate high on scales of what makes a good movie. Personally I really like it- esp after the second viewing with my three daughters - (I watched their faces at all the right moments- it was so fun to see them have a great time at a Star Wars movie⭐️⭐️⭐️) and I wanted so bad for Ben to just grab rey and plant one on her after the praetorian guard battle!! 😤😓🤣

      Exactly! J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson are on the same page despite approaching each film differently. Even though a lot of the mystery-boxes were answered by Johnson in a way that some people felt was anticlimactic, Abrams, Lucasfilm, and Disney stood behind his decisions! What's more, Abrams and Johnson each came to the same conclusion of who Rey's parents should be: nobody! Her destiny isn't defined by her past but by her future choices. I thought the treatment Rian gave to Rey's parentage was the most interesting one. It's what Kylo/Ben says: she comes from nothing AND YET she's a powerful and central piece of the greatest story of the galaxy. How amazing it is that despite her humble origins, her capacities do not stem from her parents (although her being a Kenobi what have also been interesting) but from her own connection with the force. She seems more relatable and complex to me that way. The whole plot also shows how conflicted she is with her origins and how this seemingly perfect character has also secrets to hide that make her more nuanced. I loved, loved the movie. It's among by top three actually.

      I agree. I think making her a Kenobi or any familiar character's daughter would have made the star wars univierse too small. Very Disney to have royalty and pauper dynamic.

      I thought the same thing, a lot of people hated that her parents aren't special, but I actually love it even more, it subverts the stereotype of the chosen one coming from a background that determines their destiny by making Rey the one who decides her destiny because she's a strong character without a convenient parentage.

    I have been waiting for your video for four days now. I absolutely loved the movie and of course, Reylo so much so in fact, I have seen it 4 times already (once per day). My favourite storyline and sequence was of course, Reylo and the elevator/throne room sequence. I loved that they teamed up and that Ben pulled the lightsaber toward her to catch in contrast to TFA but my favourite moment was as they were fighting back to back, the two of them formed a yin-yang symbol which was everything. The elevator scene had so much sexual tension/chemistry between them. As for the future of Reylo, I am not worried because of a few specific moments like when in the throne room during Snoke's speech, he talked about not sensing Ben's weakness anymore and right when he says weakness, Ben looks right at Rey or when he tries to turn her and says "please" in such a heartbreaking pleading manner and her reaction to it. I loved it. Kudos to Daisy and Adam for the work they did. I could go on and on with these two but the comment is long enough and I look forward to seeing hopefully a Light Side Edition video.

      My 17 year old daughter blurted out in the elevator scene "just kiss already!"
      Lucky for her she wasn't sitting near anyone and it was the subtitled version so I doubt there were many English native speakers for her to piss off (Which is why the theater was only 20% full in the first place for the matinee showing on Friday when school is already over for the year (if you passed), we live in the northeast of Brazil which is the low literacy area so the subtitled showings are never full)

    The books do not get destroyed. They show them on the Falcon at the end. I think Rey stole them before she left. If Yoda had not burned that tree down, Luke would have realized she took them and been furious.

    Going to be honest and say I loved the movie. First of all Rey didn't go to Kylo to try to 'talk' him back to the light. She knew that she would be taken to Snoke and possibly tortured. In the Force Awakens she saw that Kylo had compassion for her despite her station in life. So she wanted him to see first hand how evil Snoke was by using herself as the sacrifical lamb. That took balls on Rey's part . And the cave scene was a way of Rey realizing that she was her parents or you could say her parents left the better part of themselves behind when they abandoned her. As far as Luke, we all held him in high esteem, but Luke was afraid that the prophecy in the dark side of the force was coming true. And in a sense it did because he destroyed his own school because of his thoughtless and rash action. And just to think, Han Solo died without knowing the truth. Luke's overconfidence has always been his albrotross around his neck. By the way, Palpatine is from Naboo. My two cents.

    Hi Lee! Just wanted to say the first time I saw it, I wasn´t totally on board but watch it a second time and you will love it and understand what Rian did. Plus we got the Reylo scenes that were so fantastic, the chemistry between Adam & Daisy was through the roof. Them not ending together in this movie but it was the right way to go, and it gives hope for Ben Solo to come back and for Reylo to fully happen. No one is going to be able to save Kylo but himself. Kylo look so sad and remorse while looking up at Rey in their final force bond scene, which thankfully they still have! The only part I did´t like much was Canto Bight and the Rose/Finn story seemed like a filler to me. Other than that it was awesome. And Luke´s role in this movie was fantastic.
    The only thing that worries me is that Kylo might sacrifice himself for the greater good of the galaxy in IX and won´t survive this trilogy but I hope I am wrong and there is still a chance that Ben/Rey can found a new Jedi Order together. I wish we would have gotten a kiss but most likely in IX!

    To me the dice scene was symbolic to Kylos empty dreams. Its like well I have everything I wanted but why do I feel empty now. Then I think he for sure realized something when she closed that door on him. Omg im so excited but I am also torn about this movie. I want to love it but something felt not right. Reylo and the forcebond was amazing tho. Either way all the abuse online was worth it to be proven right about the subtle story between them that we all picked up on from the beginning. (EDIT) I would like to add when we see the final movie it might perhaps change our feelings about this one. Im just so hopeful.

It's this acceptance that is missing in parts of the fandom. For myself I must say that I absolutely LOVED the movie... not because of its humour or else, but because of its Reylo. You guys brought me into Reylo, Reylo brought me into this massive happiness about Star Wars (it gave me a reason to give Disney a chance with this) and Disney delivered in its own way. So thank you, guys, for the new OTP, I found because of you and please keep making those wonderful videos!

The first time I hated it and I was so disappointed and I was like "thank god jj's got episode 9' and then i watched it again on saturday and idk what happened but I ate it up and loved every single moment. I have no idea how this movie did that to me! Then I was invited to watch it again so I did and it has really settled with me and I can't believe I didn't enjoy it upon first watch. It isn't as well-paced I think as force awakens, but I do think it's one of the best star wars films. I'll even say it's better than return of the jedi.

    So basically, we need the director’s cut of the movie. If we can get the original cut, the whole 3 hours with all the deleted scenes, I think the pacing issues will be gone and the movie will feel more fleshed out. I loved it. I am already going through Star Wars withdrawal. I can’t wait for the novelization to come out. Maybe that will give us more insight into the force bond scenes.

    You guys like symbolism and all so maybe you'll appreciate the epiphany I had on my way out of my second viewing. The Last Jedi is a metaphor for George Lucas' SW career. Call to action, triumph, hero worship, going back to do more, failure, turned on by family, self imposed exile, redemption in handing the legacy over to new hopefuls. It's his hero's journey. No wonder I reacted poorly to it at first- I wanted George Lucas' story to go differently too! Would love to hear everyone's thoughts!

    No one wants Rey/Poe. Poe is a kind of a Gary Stu, firstly. Secondly, Poe is older than Kylo which puts the age difference between himself and Rey at +11 years. Thirdly, he's being groomed for command, and when he takes over, it would suck if our heroine is now the wife/girlfriend of the leader/man-with-a-plan

    • @ChibiHoshiDragon
      @ChibiHoshiDragon 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AGE is never a good reason to diss a ship. (NOT a POE fan myself. I however DO have several ships (Jane Austin books, Belle and Gold (OUaT), May/Ward and Ward/Skye(SHIELD), Taggart/Jo (Eureka), Saul/Six and Tyrol/Cally (BSG), and Spuffy (Buffy), Wolverine/Rogue and Jean/Scott (X-Men), Dyson/Kenzi (Lost Girl), Pete/Myka (Warehouse 13), Rose/9 - River/11 - Clara/12 (Doctor Who), Henry/Elisa (Selfie) Firefly Ships, and Aragorn/Arwen...hence my rant
      But for your info:
      Leia and Han are 10 years apart. Two more years isn't a BIG diff.
      I DO agree with the command issue. so just stick with that.

    • @johnjungkook2721
      @johnjungkook2721 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      HoshiReed Age alone is not enough, but their age difference reflects another more important difference. Rey is establishing who she is as a force user, so is Kylo. Poe already knows who he is. Rey and Poe are at different levels of maturity and self-establishment. Ben Solo, however, is still an adolescent who was repressed before he was ever allowed to grow up.

    You guys have the best Star Wars commentary I've heard! Your predictions are intelligent and intuitive and correct a lot of the time. As a Star Wars fan, but not a fanatic, I always thought one of the series' flaws was that it had too many pieces, too many moving parts that often didn't enrich but actually bogged down the storytelling. Star Wars at its best was always a story about family and love, so for Rian Johnson to knock down all the extraneous pieces (killing Snoke and Luke, Rey's parents are nobodies) they can now tell the real story at play, which is Rey and Kylo Ren balancing the Force. Rian wasn't trolling and he wasn't going to keep playing fan service; he just wanted to tell the best Star Wars story for our world, today. The light and dark sides have been fighting forever, and to what end? When one war is done, another begins. The light and dark must finally join in peace, become something new--and that's Reylo! Now that's something different and infinitely exciting! And I'm obsessed. Can't wait to follow your channel during the excruciating two year wait for episode IX. Thanks guys!

    I was surprised by Luke, yes, but idk, after all he felt guilt about what happened with his nephew, he blocked himself from the force and went to Ahch-To to die. His death was beautiful. I don't think anything will come from the Poe and Rey thing, I feel like it would be too late to all of a sudden have them go through the makings of a relationship in the last movie after just meeting for the first time on screen at the end of TLJ. What I do find interesting about the Poe and Rey thing is that, if it happens in any way, it would mean that both Leia's "sons" would like the same girl. Ben is Leia's birth son and Poe is her "surrogate" son that are both great pilots and are extremely good looking lol going after the same girl.

    Nice episode, but Lee, I hope you reconsider this film and Rey's motivations. Her defense of Ben Solo after learning that Luke tried to kill him and her anger towards Luke felt very understandable to me. Not only are they feeling the same emotions through their Force bond, but she knows what it is like to feel abandoned and betrayed by her family. She learned Luke was at least partly responsible for creating Kylo Ren and felt some of his resentment because she herself feels similar resentment towards her parents. The difference is she doesn't let it consume her. Also, it was clear to me why she wanted to go to Ben and thought that she could turn him. Her decision came after she touched his fingers and glimpsed a vision of his future with him at her side. She already knows he loves her, and she already returns his feelings. For the first time in a long time, they no longer feel alone. She wrongly thought that meant that he would turn to the light as soon as she went to him, just as he wrongly assumed she would turn to the dark side; nevertheless, I believe this vision is a glimpse of the future and what is still to come in episode 9. I think that the audience would have benefited from seeing the vision that Kylo and Rey both glimpsed when they touched hands and helped us to understand Rey's motivation more, but that would have given too much away for the scenes which came after. It's in hindsight that we're able to reflect back and wonder about what exactly that vision meant. Also, the scene in the cave of Rey seeing many different versions of herself and looking for her family is very important; if you look very closely, the silhouette in the mirror isn't of her parents but of her and even Ben! This has been confirmed in the official art book for TLJ.

    When I watched it the first time I was impressed/happy/scared. I couldn't eat for like 10 hours after, and I was so filled with energy that I could relax only after lifting weights for an hour or two, listening to angsty and sexy Marilyn Manson songs, that now remind me of Kylo XD Like no SW movie ever made me feel so much emotion. I LOVED it, but I'm sooo scared about Kylo/Ben being killed in IX. I liked him in TFA, but I f*cking fell in love with him in Tlj!! Adam Driver is such an amazing actor!
    I actually watched Tlj again today and I loved it even more~
    I saw a lot of criticism online, and I find it sad. But I also do think that the reason why I loved TFA and TLJ so much is because I'm not a big fan of previous SW movies. I liked them, but I never loved them or old characters as much as I love new ones. So yeah, I can see why people are upset, but personally I don't get it.

I do hope your opinion of this movie improves not because I don't respect your opinion but because I don't like it when people are unhappy. :( I think accepting it the way it is and moving forward will make you happier. :) I mean I didn't care for TFA at first because I went in with so many expectations of the movie and then I was like Ok.....? But as I look at it more I was like huh.....this really is awesome. I hope you end up liking it. :) As always, I await your next videos and theories! :)

    That moment with Luke, he acted as a Jedi Master with the fate of the universe on his shoulders. He did a 'Minority Report' moment. He thought if he could stop it now, then the universe will thank him later. He didn't see the boy who needed his help, who had not actually chosen the dark side. He saw the threat that a Master Jedi has to fight. That's a part of the reason why Luke, went to exile. Apart from actually being the catalyst to Ben turning dark, the expectations of the galaxy drove Luke to lose himself.

    Here are the hints I had for Rey feeling sympathy for Ben. In their second force bond, she called him a monster and he said, "yes I am." She was taken aback, at first i thought it was because he admitted it. After rewatching, you can see his chin quivered a bit, like he was sad that he had turned into a monster. I think that's what Rey saw that took her aback - his morose regret of what he had become. The second thing was when he told her what Luke did, she called him a liar, but she didn't look like she actually believed he was a liar. Luke himself confirmed Ben's story even if for the slightly different viewpoint. Luke looked into the eyes of a scared boy, he said. She had already seen that boy in the "yes I am [a monster]" scene.

    Nothing wrong with a little dark side. I like the balance in this review, and I agree with a lot of what you all said. I look back on TFA and I remember going into that with minimal expectations except for some small speculation as to who the characters are. It's insane to think how much TLJ delivered after two years of an entire fandom hyping it up every single day. After all that time I just.. let go, and felt that I could finally relax once I got that crawl and I heard that music.

    Hi guys! First of all we want to thank everyone who is contributing amazing insights to the discussion in the comments section for this video. We welcome other viewpoints and constructive criticism, as always. That said, we have gotten quite a bit of hate for this episode, and there's no need for that. As a reminder, there's no reason to bash our speakers or other commenters. Comments containing name-calling, insults, and pointless negative baiting remarks that don't add anything to the discussion are being held. Please remember that we are each allowed to hold our own views and opinions - we don't have to agree on everything and sometimes it's more interesting if we don't. Also, please remember that there are humans on the other side of this podcast episode. Thank you! 🙏

      Star Wars Connection I think Luke doing the projection at the end is getting some unnecessary hate. I thought it was 100% within Luke's character, but also showed that he has learned from his mistakes. By not confronting Kylo and the First Order head on, he was able to save the ones he loves, and also NOT kill Ben in the process. When Luke did the projection, it more or less sealed a Kylo redemption arc for me. What do y'all think?
      Also, I wonder if Ben and Rey are simply unable to kill eachother, either due to the intervention of the Force, or because...well, they just don't want to. They have both had numerous opportunities to destroy each other and have not done so. I think the next film will feature a new threat, and it will drive them together. I was happy with the way things between them were paced. I also think that while Kylo in a sense, "finished what (Vader) started," by killing his master and seizing control of the galaxy, he will in Episode IX learn about Anakin and Padme (perhaps from Force Ghost Luke), and realize that what Anakin Skywalker truly started was trying to save the woman he loved...and he'll finish that...I think you know where I'm going with this...

      @Gregory B: even our resident TLJ hater Lee agrees that the astral projection plot device was an elegant solution to the Luke vs Kylo Ren problem. It's brilliant, and definitely shows that they are trying to protect Kylo Ren from further harm in terms of public perception so that they can rehabilitate him convincingly en route to his redemption arc in 9. There were several instances in which we see this kind of thing in TLJ. In fact the whole "Luke thought about stabbing Ben Solo for one second" device is likely a thing in order to make Kylo more sympathetic.

      Star Wars Connection Without a doubt, Ben is the most fascinating character in this trilogy. There was definitely a conscious effort in this movie to make him more sympathetic. With that said, his story is just genuinely interesting. His past dominates his perception of himself so much. He tells Rey she needs to let the past die and to kill it if she has to, yet he struggles to take his own advice. I believe his arc is to stop trying to run from the past and instead learn from it.

    Ok guys, I'm dying to discuss storyline and symbolism in TLJ with SW fans. Just went to my third viewing and what stuck out this time was the theme of failure. We see Hux fail at communicating- we feel amused at his buffoonery. We see Poe fail at proving to Leia he knows how to lead - we feel empathy and rejection. We see Luke fail at taking on the call to action - we feel incredulous and confused. We see Rey fail at winning Luke over - we feel frustration. We see Kylo fail to impress Snoke- we feel sorry for him and bullied. We see Finn fail at fooling Rose- we feel kind of embarrassed for him. We see Snoke fail at perceiving what Kylo has planned - we feel excited and triumphant. We see so many failures and it provokes so much emotion and it makes us evaluate how we view failure and more importantly- how we react to it, how they react to it. What makes us heroes or villains? What makes us winners or losers? Master Yoda tells us- Failure is our greatest teacher! Heroes fail, but heroes can always be heroes again, if they only answer the call and dare to fail again! I'm a little excited, if you can't tell. I went from HATING this movie to being head over heels in love. In four days. I think this movie is partially being poorly received because we see so much failure in it. It's a tough subject and one we don't like to face often times. We like lots of successes in our SW films. Would love to know what you guys think.

    About Snoke - is he really dead? Maybe he fooled us all? Or maybe he can regenrate? If they left Snoke to be killed in IX like Emperor people would complain that its a ripoff. I am happy that Kylo did what Vader couldn't. And people have problem with Kylo being better at something than Vader. Anyway - Visual Dictionary tells us that the mosaic in Ahch-to temple shows Prime Jedi. The first Jedi. And he looks like Snoke. Snoke -Abrams said - is fallen angel. First (Jedi) Order? Makes sense to me.

    Here you are! Yay!!! I'm with Denise!!!!!!!!!! I loved every part of it too!!! 🖤☄️🖤☄️🖤 I don't think it's perfect, but I still love it. I feel strongly that Luke's reaction was just an animal instinct to the Dark energy he found in Ben, not Ben himself. He looked, was assaulted by the dark (not Ben) and reflex took over, but he stopped and was ashamed when he realized his fear almost caused him to kill someone he loved. That shame was deepened when that act created Kylo. I almost fell out of my freaking chair when rose said, "That's how we'll win. Not by fighting what we hate, but saving what we love." It hit me like a sledge hammer. I think it's foreshadowing and supports that Rae loves Ben and will save him, thereby winning. We'll see! Thanks for your thoughts!! 🖤🖤🖤

    I agree with the shirtless scene, I'm pretty sure every time Ben takes off his gloves or shirt it shows his vulnerability. Cos a lot of people have been saying that the gloves off means Ben and gloves on means Kylo.

    I loved this movie, the fact that they recognize that both sides are wrong and that Luke came to realize this is amazing, he has come to realize that the force is free and it moves both ways, he keeps being afraid of the dark side because that was how he was taught, he lost Ben because of the dark side and he no longer has faith in the jedi ways... and then this girl’ “Rey from nowhere” came and jumped into de darkness and came out from it, unspoiled... and she reached out to his nephew... all that was a shock in itself, so big was that shock that he recognized a moment of weakness because of the fear he felt in that little moment when he saw the darkness in Ben and he pushed Rey away, she tried to convince him to join her one last time, but Luke knows that there is something twisted about just being a Jedi so when she is gone on an impulse he tries to burn down the last vestiges of that religion... but he can’t because it’s not completely wrong and damn he doesn’t know what to do... and then comes Yoda and does the job jaja I love him. The message of the movie is clear, the dark side and the light can not exist without the other and they must not be in different sides, to make just one side with balance in it the ancient religions must be destroyed and a new way of belief must be formed to unite both... that is gonna be Reylo work... And I absolutely loved Reylo, they are the best characters in the whole Star Wars saga for me (fight me on this 😜). I LOVED IT

    About Rey/Poe. I agree that there was nothing else than friendship between them in the scene where they were introduced to each other. However, they might develop that relationship into a romantic one. The reason I believe that is because of the amount of screen time he had in this movie and his arc. They are clearly setting him up as a new Han Solo. He said "I KNOW" to Rey. Plus they depicted him as a hotheaded, talented pilot, super handsome, funny, charismatic and flirty. This kind of character always gets the girl. I did not like how his character had more screen time than Kylo, and that is something that marketing really didn't reflect. I think it would be OOC for Rey to fall for him, but I don't have a lot of faith in that.

      Harrison Ford was EPIC as Han Solo. That HF level of charm and swag only comes around once in the SW universe. The era of Han's ended in TFA's. Moving forward the final film character development of Poe will be something uniquely all his own. Which it should be. Oscar Isaac deserves that. The character of Poe is completely vested in fighting this war & he'll have his hands full doing just that. Not about kicking it to the film's virgin heroine from the FORCE for the last film in the trilogy close out. Another words, Rian Johnson did our fandom a solid for Reylo in SW TLJ & I couldn't be happier about it

    "He wasn't going to stab him." True, Luke likely wasn't going to stab Ben; he was going to bisect him. I'm sorry, but the argument that Luke wasn't going to kill Ben is very clearly wrong, at least when Luke ignited the saber. True, Luke lacked the resolve to go through with the act, but before that resolve broke Luke Skywalker was going to murder his own nephew while he slept, all out of fear. In a way, though, this is somewhat poetic; in episode 6 we saw what was arguably the most powerful Sith to have ever existed make the choice that would destroy the Empire he helped to create and rebirth the Republic he destroyed, and he did it out of love. In episode 8 we see the son of that same Sith, arguably the greatest Jedi to have existed up till that point, make the choice that would burned down that same Republic and possibly gave rise to the greatest Dark Lord in the history of the SW universe, all because of fear. As it turns out, Yoda was right: fear led to anger. Anger led to hate. Hate led to suffering.

      i agree, and i think another aspect to take into consideration about those scenes is the fact that both luke and ben are kind of portrayed as unreliable narrators in their recounting of the incident. this is one of the many 'ambiguous' parts of the movie we were told to expect through all of the press tour. luke omits the very important fact that he was looming over ben with his lightsaber drawn, and ben omits the reasons for luke's mounting fear and distrust of him. we know ben was essentially groomed by snoke from birth, and that isolation coupled with his parents seeming to abandon him in favour of The Cause, so to speak, left him with no one to turn to other than luke, who betrayed him. fear took over them both, ultimately.

    It's interesting to see how different the experience is when you come in with little expectations. Other than Reylo, I wasn't interested in theories about Snoke or Rey's parents, so the answers we got didn't bother me at all. I think it might actually be detrimental to go in with huge expectations because then it's harder to accept the director's interpretation. I have a feeling hard-core fans will need to mull over this before they can truly appreciate the decisions Rian made. I actually think it's awesome that Rian is challenging the fan base. It's necessary for growth character - wise and fan - wise.
    As for Luke, I vaguely remember watching the first episode a few years ago and it didn't connect with me on a deep level. Not that it was bad, I just didn't love it. The Luke we saw in this movie was awesome (imo); I took no issue with him.
    Also, Kylo Ren was the best character in this film. Every time he was off screen, I wanted him back 😍 I didn't think TLJ was perfect though. Rose and Finn had a cool dynamic but their adventure could have been condensed. I liked Poe but for some reason, I prefered him when he was with Finn in TFA. Kylo was the only character I loved though. Bring on Episode IX 😀

    This is definitely a movie you need to see more than once. When I left the premier seeing it the first time, I have no idea how I felt because I was in shock over a lot of things that had happened in the movie. I think I had a lot of the fandom metas and theories to blame for that, I had many expectations that did not go the way I thought it would. I saw it a second time yesterday, and I liked it a lot better because I saw and felt things more this time around after the shock faded away. Girls, please give movie another chance and watch it again. I really like it (I'm not sure if I love it yet) although there are some flaws.

    Being critical besides loving the Reylo that was shown it wasn't as fulfilling as it could have been. Rey gave Kylo apart of herself that she's never shown anyone and end result Kylo wanted power more than her and she said goodbye to him for now. The now part leaves me hopeful as if there is a chance maybe for the futures they seen to play out without one or both dying. I love they are connected apparently long after Snokes death I just hope that doesn't change just so the audience could watch a subpar possible romance for poe/rey.

    After the second viewing I see Kylo's "proposal" to Rey to rule the galaxy similar to Mr. Darcy's 1st proposal in Pride and Prejudice. Ill timed, they both basically said, despite you being a nobody of poor connections I love you anyway. Both were rejected. So I have so much hope for Reylo in the next one. I can't wait till the dvd comes out and we can get more in depth discussions about each scene, cinematic art, and symbolism.

    I think Reylo was done very well and I over all freaking loved the film. I do agree, though, that the editing was a little rushed and it could have been a lirtle smoother. Also, I feel like Rey's character almost took a step back. She wasn't in it as much and seemed kind of bland as opposed to The Force Awakens. Anyway, loved it and can't wait for 9!

    I watched the movie last night and I can finally watch this video. I loved the reylo scenes, I thought the movie was amazing but I was not expecting the ending at all!!! I cant believe kylo decided to be supreme leader , it broke my heart because I knew rey won't go with him but I hope episode 9 would bring them together. As to why rey went to kylo, while they were touching hands she saw them side by side in the future. That is what convinced her to go. She thought he would turn. He thought she would be by his side rulling the galaxy together but they were both wrong. For me that future vision is hopefully their endgame in episode 9. I hope that after you watch it a couple of more times you will like this movie better lee.

    I both loved and disliked aspects of this movie. I absolutely loved all the scenes with Luke/Rey/Kylo/the force, but wasn’t particularly invested in the resistance plots at all. I understand that it was supposed to be a commentary on war, but the excessive jokes and exposition hampered those stories quite a bit. It was a long movie.
    I’ve seen it about three times though and have found a newfound appreciation for it, but I still feel similarly about the two major plots.
    And, Denise I agree with you about Rey’s motivations for helping Kylo. I don’t think the amount of Luke/Kylo backstory was enough of a motivating factor, and it didn’t particularly make Kylo a sympathetic character. He did that in subsequent scenes. I really hope we get more of that story because I’m feeling very indifferent towards it right now.
