- How to Connect your Mac to a Printer Shared by Windows Computer and print using Wired or Wireless (WIFI) network.
This tutorial shows how you can connect your Mac, Macbook, iMac to a printer which is connected by a Windows computer.
Make Sure Printer, windows computer and Apple's Mac all are connected to the same network.
Printer sharing Must be enabled on Windows Computer.
The printer is directly connected to Windows PC.
This method works for all major versions of Windows like Windows XP, Vista, 7 and Windows 10.
You can connect your Mac with wire or wireless using the WIFI router.

The most comprehensive video on this topic from the few videos and articles I checked out. In my case the Windows computer was member of a domain and I had to enter domain credentials from the Mac.
I was trying to get it to work all night. I had no idea about holding down the option key to get the advanced icon! Thank you so much. When it printed I was so excited.
The solution works (thank you!). But requires a few tweaks: 1. Install the latest latest drivers for your printer( re-install them just to be sure you have the latest software; get them from your printers manufacturer). 2. After installing the drivers, shut down your MAC completely; then turn on to reboot fully (soft re-boot didn't work after 2 tries, so do the complete shutdown and save yourself hours of heartache). 3. Once rebooted, follow the procedure in the video to the letter. Beware of the "spaces" in the printer name (if they exist) and use the %20 as a substitute as instructed. You'll know you are on the right path when you go to select the software from the drop-down list and your printer name is there in the list. 4. You MUST do the an initial print of something to the printer. The printer Icon will have a red alert symbol on the first print job, as it will be waiting for your authorization / login on your WINDOWS PC. You will have to change the first box (as in the video) with the correct name of your Windows PC... then enter your admin password.

This absolutely worked. I was able to connect my wife's Macbook to both printers connected to my Windows desktop. I did need to download a Mac printer driver for one of the printers (a very recent model) but that was easy. Thank you very much!

I also made sure in my router settings to assign a static ip to my windows desktop so the ip doesn't change for a while
Thank you so much for the demo. I followed every step but when i tried to test print, the printing status showed : ready to print, printing, connect to the printer, sending print data and then pause. nothing get printed. what happens?

Awesome, works perfectly! Just have to authenticate by entering that /username and login PW you use for windows on your PC, then on the Mac click "add to keychain" so you don't have to enter it every time.
Zane Hovey i'm experiencing an issue. when it asks for the name and the password for the printer, for authentication, which username and password should i put. i don't have a username and login pw for my windows pc?!
Noran Ishtay you should use username and password to windows pc to which printer is connected. But first you have to delete all previous wrong logs in keychain.
Hi! I have already cleaned the log but Authentification fails again and again. The windows 7 seven pc just has the default user alone and without password. Any idea??
+Martin Galli First you need to create password on windows 7, without password you cannot authenticate it.
+sandeep singh Thank you! I definded admin a user with psw. The printing jobs goes to the windows spool ( via ethernet to the pc) but The documents fail going to the printer ( via usb ) . Very frustrating. From time to time Mac shows "filter error"

Hi! I followed your method and it worked fine. Then the second time I repeated it, I couldn't seem to connect to the printer. It keeps saying NT_Status_Logon_Failure... any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

In the "IP" option in the Print & Scan menu in the Mac we insert the printer's IP address, which was previously noted down from the window's machine.

if you have trouble with autentification, just chose type with LPD/LPR Host. In the Device URL: type lpd://PCName/PrinterShareName
and workfully.

HI! this worked perfect for me up until the authentication. For some reason my computer won't pull up the pop up window to introduce the authentication username and password. any advice?

Finally got this to work, for me the first IPv4 didn't work for me,
So I tried the second by the Wireless Lan adapter Wi-Fi and
BOOM ! Everything works nicely.
Hint:
User name must be Admin user and needs a password not a PIN (will not work with pin) .,

However, I've connected/configured my Macbook so that it will print on the HP LaserJet connected to my PC (wirelessly) by using an "address" for the printer that is comprised of...\\PCCOMPUTERNAME\PRINTDRIVERNAME.
In my case, this was \\BIGBLACKBOX\HP LaserJet 4000 Series PCL 5
Do YOU recall every seeing THIS method?

shadat alam you then need to get software from the Printer company for your Mac system before you try the connect to printer!

Can this be done only connecting pc and mac with ethernet cable but no network?
You need to create a local network and both Mac and PC should have different local IP, this is technically possible. Or you could connect both machines with a router and it would definitely work. Internet is not necessary for this connection at all.

Very helpful video but I'm trying to connect the other way and having fits..
My canon laser printer is connected to an iMac and I'm trying to print from a HP laptop, wirelessly.
I have downloaded all drivers and it will print fine if I connect USB but no way have I been able to set up a successful network connection.
Also, I can print wirelessly from other mac laptops so I know the network works..

I did everything as shown . printer is showing "PAUSED" and its not printing when I am giving command from my Mac.,
installed correctly, my macbook sees my printer in this case a Brother DCP-T300. tried to print, it sends data and says ready to print but that is the last dialogue. it does not print at all.

For me it just says "Connecting to printer" then eventually gives up. I may have used the wrong password, but I don't see where to re-enter it. Maybe I'll have to start over

+Tom Smith I never keep a password on my windows machine. It finally worked after I put a windows password. I didn't use the info here, I just added a printer and chose the windows tab and MacosX found the shared printer.
