Fixing the Mac AirPrint driver problem for Canon and Epson printers

- It's possible to wrongly set up your Mac printer driver for Epson and higher end Canon printers. In 'Fixing AirPrint', I'll show why it happens and how to avoid it on older and newer Apple Macs.
AirPrint works fine for iPhones and iPads, but is to be avoided for higher quality printing.
The problem usually manifests through your printer driver not showing all the functions you expect.

As usual another great piece to camera. I recently purchased a Canon pixma pro 200 printer and on installing the drivers I ended up with both the awful ApplePrint and the official Canon drivers, which I then had to update! As for the Epson 2850 printer you are currently testing, all I can say is good luck, you’ll need it! I must say it great to see you in action as you are one of the VERY few real experts on this channel who really know what the hell they are talking about! Keep up the good work.😊🎉

Thanks so much Keith! Interestingly, I watched this video before I bought this printer and my partner installed it. I warned him of AirPrint, but he said he didn't see anything about it. Then when I went to print something, I noticed that I didn't have very many options at all, no options for colour or anything. I checked the preferences, and sure enough, there it was....AirPrint! We followed your instructions and now it's gone! I was so excited to see all the print options I was expecting to be there now! I had a mare of a time with this when I installed a Canon pro 300. The drivers wouldn't install after multiple attempts and many calls to Canon couldn't solve the issue. Eventually it was discovered my mac OS version was corrupt and had to remove and install a new version. The printer driver installed first time. Thought I'd mention this as other people may have the same problem. Excellent article as always though sir.

Thanks for that. I installed an ImagePro 300 a year back and went through the same problem. Had to call Canon support to figure it out as the 'auto' install process is AirPrint which I didn't want. Good work Keith.

Thank you for this video, it this helped me so much today. I didn't understand why I couldn't get my driver version to read more than 3.0 - AirPrint was the problem. Even when I selected EPSON ET-8550 Series under Kind it would default to AirPrint after the printer was added. I had to go in the dropdown menu and select EPSON ET-8550 series (there were two) for it to connect properly. One didn't allow the printer to be recognized by the installer software and the other worked properly. Had I not found your video, I would still be in here screaming at the printer ready to push it on the floor. Thanks again!

You are the printer God!!! Man, I was struggling today because my Epson WF suddenly didn't pull the thick paper out anymore. I've been using it via air print, but I never had this issue. Whatever I did, nothing helped and all it showed was that the paper tray is empty!! Which wasn't. So then I deinstalled it and followed your steps - and voila!!! It's working again and also I want to mention, I have a feeling, that it prints faster now?! I will observe this a bit longer... THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH FOR YOUR AMAZING VIDEOS!!!

I’m running 14, and it looked exactly like your osx10 version. I had AirPrint accidentally installed and Epson Layout couldn’t find the printer. Did this and it fixed it on both my p900 and et8550! red river paper looks sooooo good using RR ICC profiles!

Thanks! Very helpful. I was wondering what happened to advanced settings. Do you ever run into paper jam problems on your Epson? It seems the error only appears when I use “fine” or “quality” print quality settings but not with any of the “normal” or “draft” options. I am scouring the inter-webs for help.

Most printers I test are brand new, so any problems would get it sent back to Epson ASAP
That said paper handling varies by model - there are no generic 'Epson' or 'Canon' problems

Epson Print Layout only sees printers that are not "Airprint", and additionally I got back in the printer options the utilities panel.
By the way, Epson Print Layout gives me far better results using the EPL plugin for Lightroom (Export > EPL) than directly printing from Lightroom, at least for Permajet paper. Do you have any idea why ?

It's possibly another example of Lightroom trying to do too much for you and just failing ;-)
Hi Keith…I’m struggling to choose a decent fast all in one which is not an ugly big black box,,,,so I looked at Epsom modelled and also canon maxify models…but so confused with air print as canon only support air print…no dedicated Mac OS drivers…I’m on Ventura..I want an ink tank and general all in one for photos and print and scan and adf also how important is dpi 122x600dpi seems low on this new canon maxify 4050 or 6050..help please!
Can't help much with anything with an ADF - that puts any printer firmly into the 'office printer' category so good photo printing is as much by luck than anything else - no-one makes profiles for such printers.
As you might guess, I'm afraid this is miles away from the sort of printers I look at in my testing. If you want a chance at reasonable photos, make sure it's at least 6 ink

Thanks fort this info, I seem to have a different issue. I have three mack book pro all 2013, two are running 10.xx OS and one, a late 2013, is now running on 11.xx BigSur and since tu update is refusing to print or scan via Wifi however it does via Ethernet cable. I'm pretty sure that it was ok before the new MacOs was installed and I never had any issues with the other two in all those years with my two Epson 412 and 432 series.I have tried avoiding AirPrint and using one of the other two available from Epsom (9pin and 24pin) but no joy on wifi so I have to move the Mac to my other desk where the thunderbolt ethernet cable is every time I need to print. 🤔

I keep my older stuff running 10.15 and skipped 11 and 12. I've 13 on the new Mac Studio.
I have an old Canon Pro 100 that I seldom get good color matching when compared to my monitor. If I have done all of my other color management steps correctly could the Air Print likely be giving me the problem? I realize the, other color management steps, mentioned is very involved, and I have watched most of your videos and written articles on the subject.

This could be an issue, but I'm not sure how up to date the pro-100 driver is. I'd suggest asking on the printing forum at dpreview.com , since there are quite a few pro-100 users there.
Keith, With a lot of help from Cannon on the phone, I finally got my Pro 200 set up on my Mac, with the non Airprint driver. I’m not very computer literate, so forgive me. My question is, where do I find this so called Color Management you refer to thats been the issue with Airprint? Also how does it work? Do you have any videos are articles on how to use or adjust it? My Canon Pro9000mk2 stopped working after my last update to my Macbook Pro 14.1.1
Is there a way to use a old OS to keep my trusted 9000 printing. I’m not using the air print option
I run a copy of Parallels to have virtual copies of OS X still running.
It has copies of 10.6 and 10.13 on it.
This is something I need to update when I move to using the Mac Studio [currently with 13] as my main photo editing machine.
There may be other solutions - I personally don't much like 13 or 14, they feel too much like I'm using a phone [which I dislike]
Love your work Keith. A bit off topic but can a Pixma ip7860 be backwards compatible with MacOS 10.15.7 aka Catalina?

I don't know that printer I'm afraid - there's a chance it will only support AirPrint for connection - some smaller Canon printers do nor have 'full' drivers for Mac

Set up an airprint driver if it offers options you want - there is nothing to stop you having two printers in the list, referring to the same physical printer.
Normally, it's the airprint one which loses options though...

Great explanation. I am using a MacBook Pro. I got a Canon laser printer. I got tech support to install it. Of course, I ended up using air print. Several of the features were not available. I called Canon and they could not fix the problem. I called Apple and they could not fix the problem. I ended up returning the printer. I wish I had seen the video before.

Hi Keith do you know of any non AirPrint drivers for the TS8100 canon printers canon don’t offer one that I can find and the CUPs driver is not compatible with Mac OS X 13.1 I know this is not a pro printer but it’s the one I have and would like to have more control of the print process cheers
AFAIK, all of Canon's Mac drivers for their smaller printers make use of AirPrint

What problem do you get with airprnt. on the latest os Ventura?
Not printed much, with MacOS 13 but it seems to be better
Installed several printers and no obvious airprint issues
ColorSync utility seems to be able to print targets correctly.
I noticed that Canon's site defaulted to 10.15 when deciding what to download - seemed fine since the CUPS driver is the same one listed for 13
My only issue is apple's ongoing crusade to make my Mac look more like a phone... :-(

This helped a lot. However, when I reinstalled it without AirPrint, it now won’t print double sided. It’s not an option anymore. Any ideas? I have the ET 2850 with an older Mac, running on 14 I think.
You can have a proper driver and an airprint one installed - just make sure to give them different names... [add new printer in the sys prefs - just pick the AP one]
Of course, the AP one will be limited, but you should get the DS back?
I'm encountering a similar issue, albeit on a Windows PC using the same printer model. The Epson Print Layout software fails to recognise the printer, whether connected via Wi-Fi or USB. Curiously, every other application recognises the printer without issue, making this particularly vexing. Despite repeatedly uninstalling and reinstalling both the printer drivers and the Epson Print Layout software-ensuring to install the driver prior to the Epson Print Layout-my efforts have been to no avail. I've exhaustively searched for a solution online, yet none of the proposed fixes seem to rectify the problem. Would anyone have any recommendations?

Following this, I deleted and added the printer in but air-print shows back up when I click into the printer next to Kind. All steps aligned prior to this, any advice?

I have this big issue with driver. I have installed the right software but I have not access to any of the option from the Utility box. If I open the utility tab it only gives two options. I am not able to do any color management, or maintenance or any other feature the utility might have. I want to print from Photoshop but I am not able to disable printer color management...stressful, really...Any help please.

Sorry -I can't offer any other tips without vastly more additional info.
Even then it's pretty basic advice - I simply don't use enough systems on this Mac yet. Other than that, it's all worked just fine.
Re-install from scratch - then try printing from the Canon/Epson software - but that depends on the printer model - some Canon models have no support fro proper colour management - see my written G550 review for example
Hi Keith, I have a Canon Pro 200 installed few days ago and I am using MacBook Pro with the latest update. My main problem is that the driver it seems like not working probably. Firstly if I want to disable the printer colour management from photoshop and assign a ICC profile I can’t. I use Baryta Prestige paper and I want to use the right profile. If I want to add from Media configuration a custom paper profile I can create one but it doesn’t add it to the printer. More over, if I only open the utility of the Printer there are only two tabs I can choose from, the rest of the features like Maintenance, colour, supply, etc are missing. I can only print using the Professional printing layout which is annoying because I can’t assign my Baryta paper ICC…I hope you have some more info…

HI will you have any ideas on connection with Printer? got Deco x50 , a new canon printer E4570 , using Macair , printer can connect to wifi as per screen, I can at time see appearing on my mac when want to add but not consistent and suspect Deco is a possible issue for poor connection, printer appear on my Deco list of connected items ? but cant seem to add my printer on my mac ! thanks

Hi Keith, I have a question pertaining to AirPrint. I have purchased an Epson XP-4200 printer and I had successfully set up everything. The only problem is when it comes to printing, it doesn't open up the printer when I go to system settings and under printer and scanners. The scanner is available but the printer is only in 'queue'. (Printer Queue). What other solutions could I get the printer to work.

@@KeithCooper I’m using a Mac which runs under ‘macOS Ventura’. For the printer software, I’m not using any except for the downloaded Epson hardware which allows the scanner to be use under that or manually through the computer settings. The printer however, is running on no software just the computer system settings.
I don't know the 4200 I'm afraid - Does it not print at all?
The solution might be to go to epson.sn and reinstall the printer and all the support software - pay careful attention to the printer driver setup bit - read the instruction carefully - this has caught me out installing on a MacOS 13 iMac
@@KeithCooper Thank you, I believe I’ve got it into working now, pretty much everything was under file settings and also having to reinstall the whole software made a huge difference.
I nearly had a nervousness breakdown over the last couple of days trying to get my Canon MG2550S to scan, when I go to scan and click on printer , the scan mode doesn’t come up as an option. I’ve deleted the printer, I’ve reinstalled it several times. I’ve tried to reinstall the driver but can’t find the right one. Can you help 🙏

Print speed is not an option on any printer driver I've seen?
Changes to print quality settings will usually change print times.

hat is the difference between bidirectional and unidirectional printing?
Bi-Direction: When the print head moves, printing will be performed in both the outbound pass and return pass. Uni-Direction: Printing will only be performed in the outbound pass (depending on the model, printing may only be performed in the return pass). The printing speed is lower but the quality is higher.
To give your ink some time to dry and fix the “pizza wheel” problem, slow down the printing process by turning Bidirectional Printing to off - I found it in the print settings
Hi Keith! I have been fighting this issue for days, when trying to install drivers from canon, it states that my Mac os does not need drivers, so I am finding no way to install a normal driver rather than the default air print :(
What printer?
When I reviewed the G550, I discovered that Canon has given up on writing proper drivers for the Mac for more basic printers. Essentially, if you have a basic printer, colour management is completely broken [aka AirPrint] on Macs.
I managed a workaround [in my written G550 review] but it doesn't change the driver problem.

I am considering returning the canon and doing more research especially due to this driver issues. I will take a look at that video! I can’t figure out how to uninstall canon profession print and layout. I want to uninstall and reinstall to see if I can get the thing to work. I have purple blue skies in the color and I’m constantly getting the “error occurred, memory insufficient” pop up. I have had the printer for a month.

Hello!) I have a problem, I can’t understand what my mistake is, when I create a paper profile, its name does not appear in the list on the printer panel, the four profiles that I wrote appeared and everything is fine, but today I did it several times everything is new and the paper name is not in the list on the printer panel, I update the printer driver, everything is as in the instructions, I receive confirmation that everything is ok, but... I can’t understand where the error is..
What Printer? What System? What Software?
Is this an icc profile or a custom media setting?

Thanks for the great video! I have a new Canon TS9550 and there's no driver available for Mac. So presumably my only options are to switch it for an Epson or dust off my Windows laptop and see if there's a Canon driver available for that? So frustrating!!

The only Mac workaround I found was creating special profiles to work 'over the top of' airprint - I worked with a G550, but is hardly an option for most people.
Bad move from Canon IMHO - means I cannot recommend these lower end Canon printers for Mac users
@@KeithCooper Thank you for the video, I also have a TS9550 and though I can print I cannot scan anymore! Not on my older or newer Macbook (which is already on OS Sonoma) I did install the printer again but under USE I do not have the same options as you have in the video, AirPrint does not appear for example. So it always automatically installs it with AirPrint 😞- so is the only option to buy a new printer and switch away from Canon to Epson? Seems like a waste of money since the printer is not that old yet and could function just fine.. Thanks!

I just bought Pixma G3470 few weeks ago and now I'm stuck. On MacOS 14 the only option for driver is the AirPrint and any further utility settings are not available 😑 Nothing on Canon website as well. Lot's of issues with faint black printing, etc and seems there's nothing I can do 😳 Thank you for the video though, because I was going crazy why I can't find the settings and colour management.
Bad news I'm afraid - colour management is broken on all Macs [any supported system - I still use a range from 10.13 to 13.5] with these smaller Canon printers.
Canon have decided that you don't need printing with profiles :-(

This is so helpful. Unfortunately my new Canon G6020 does not have a driver (per canon) they said it uses AirPrint. But my AirPrint (version 10.13.3 OS) will not allow me to print borderlessly. And without a Canon driver I cannot override this.
Have you tried the Canon print software? Not sure if newer Mac systems [than 10.13] still have this issue with AP

Hi Keith, Thank you so much! I finally installed the Epson printer driver correctly on my MacBook Pro w/ Big Sur 11.7.10. I can get to color options, manual settings, and the advanced color adjustments. However, when I move the advanced color adjustments, I can see how it changes my photo. The tiny preview to the side is some standard photo that changes, not the one I'm printing. So, I'm making adjustments and merely gambling on what may be the result. It wastes so much time, ink and paper. Can you help me or direct me to a helpful video? THANK YOU SO MUCH!

In general, I say never ever make any adjustments in the printer driver - it is simply the wrong place. You need to use icc profiles and an image editor of some sort...

You might also try [the free] Epson Print Layout for printing?
@@KeithCooper Thank you so much for the missing key-- use image editor, not driver! So, I guess I need to learn about icc profiles. I use the photo editor on my Mac, but the colors are really off when I print. The greens just don't come through. I have Epson XP 970. I will also try the free Epson Print Layout. Can you recommend any of your videos to get me on the learning curve with ICC profiles or a good place to start for my level of knowledge? THANK YOU!!!!

They are exactly the same model and make, although this one of course is a few years newer (2021 vs 2024)
Would it be best to remove the printer, and uninstall all the drives and then when i plug the new one in, Re-install them as a ‘clean’/fresh install to set up the new printer (or it will do it automatically like last time)? I hope that make sense! Thank you!

Had the same problem with hp 6400 , it kept disappearing, removed it, and reinstalled it making sure no airprint, im on mac os 14.5
I'm told that a static address may help, but I've not set up an HP printer for well over a decade, and not on a modern Mac system.

my macbook air 2023 adds the printer but doesn't show it as a Air Print but after adding, the printer details in the 'Kind' - reads EPSON.............Series-AirPrint, which is a bummer. This consistently spools my print jobs and then doesn't print at all.
Have you downloaded the latest driver? I got one from Epson UK
Add a printer in the system pref, BUT choose the driver - I installed a printer [an old P5000] yesterday on a brand new MBP and it worked just fine - this selection bit is the key - some printers will default to an AP version, so you need to be careful
The driver shows as V12.62 in the details in the sys prefs

Oh! And if I should uninstall it, apple and Epson just say to delete it etc, but my workforce drives has an uninstaller on it… best to just delete it all ? Or use the uninstaller but will that prevent me installing it fresh again? I know people probably wonder why I would want to delete the drives, just sometimes it could cause issues in the case of other things etc
I would just delte the printer in the printer lis and then add a new one - taking sure it is not an 'airprint' version.

I see the AirPrint in my setup. I tried to re-setup as you showed and I get an error because my computer can’t even communicate with my printer. This is after using it for months. Any help would be nice.
Without knowing the printer make, model or even what Mac system, all I can say is to go to the printer setup and treat it like a new printer installation

Go to Epson.sn and treat it like a new printer - just read everything more carefully ;-)

It's Airprint - airdrop is a phone thing
What system? - Take care to read the instructions carefully in the installer - be sure to select the driver, not any automatic choice.
If need be delete the printer instance and start from Epson.sn
Because each system is a bit different, I cannot ever give step by step details.

Sorry. I meant airprint Keith. I couldn't use Epson Print Layout because of Airprint. I solved it by connecting the printer to my imac via a USB cable, which allows me to access Print Layout.

It could be that there is no proper Mac driver
Colour management is effectively broken on Macs for many smaller Canon printers

Annoyingly, I've just installed a new Pixma TS705a and discovered that Canon don't make a driver for Mac at all, they just want you to use AirPrint. Unfortunately, this only gives you 4 media types to select - Plain, Photo, Envelope and Disc. Seems I'm stuck with it as all the advice is to make sure you're selecting the proper driver, not AirPlay. It's not for art or anything fancy, but it would be nice to have the options to change the settings from bog-standard printer paper to nicer papers.

@@KeithCooper Thanks for the reply, I've read the article and I would say similar, but not. You have options for different media types on your printer settings with the G550, but that is missing from my print dialogue, I just get the 4 basics media types. I can live without the colour profiles as it's mainly for documents, but I use different basic papers depending on need. I suspect it will be ok, just feels odd not being able to select between matt and gloss photo papers. Shall have to try them and see how they do.

Interesting. ON my computers using AIRPRINT is very reliable. On my wife's computer, her later OS X (12.51) has no AirPrint option when setting up, so we select "use Epson ET2800" and it jams the printer feeder every time. Was going to try to set hers up with AirPrint instead but I guess not?!
Depends on what you are printing - airprint usually works fine for text etc.
For printing photos with colour management and all the driver options, it's a combination of reliable but useless... ;-)
Try installing by going to epson.sn and making sure the latest stuff gets installed.
This is not a printer I've tested though, so I can't be sure...
I don't even have the option to select AirPrint, it only lets me choose the Canon series under "use" but then after I install under "kind" it says AirPrint. Does anyone know how to get around that?? Its driving me nuts
Unfortunately, for some smaller/cheaper printers, Canon completely breaks colour management on Macs, enforcing use of AirPrint

It is a TS9520. A few friends recommended it to me and they haven't had any issues with their images but I'm not sure how they managed it. @@KeithCooper

Unless they had icc profiles for papers and were using PCs any 'good colour' was more by luck than judgement ;-)

I tried to print a test page from word.. Two images and I picked the printer up via my network even though installing driver didn't finish. Or couldn't finish... It didn't print my images it printed gibberish code, twice

Oh man, I wish this worked. I just got a brand new MacBook Pro, and though the only driver says it's for the ET8500, it still installs the airprint, and there's no way around it. Sometimes I really hate Apple.
Sorry - it should still work. Delete the printer instance and set up from Epson.sn pay very careful attention to what options are there when you install the driver.
I don't have anything running 14 yet, but was still able to mistakenly install Airprint on my new Mac Studio
@@KeithCooper it did! I wasn't looking in the right spot, but I found where to go. I have a lot more options now, and it's definitely brighter and more saturated. It's still nowhere near what I see on the screen. Why is this so hard?

every single time apple or epson make an update, everything breaks, and airprint is always the culprit of wrong colours!!!!
One reason not to rush into updates - I tend to keep older systems running until I need to change. That said putting Mac OS 13 on to the imac was just for testing - it feels more and more phone like which I don't much appreciate
