    For those of you jumping into the comments section to tell me how successful vaping is at helping smokers quit please read this. Just published this week.
    The Wall Street Journal (7/9) reports U.S. adult smokers who did not use electronic vaping devices to aid in smoking cessation were more than twice as likely to quit smoking as those who did, a new study published in PLOS One concludes. The study also found that 90 percent of smokers who vaped at the start of the study were still smoking a year later. The researchers said they did not find evidence that vaping devices helped adult smokers quit at higher rates than those who did not use the products.
    The Washington Times (7/9) reports “e-cigarettes are an ineffective tool for smoking cessation,” the survey of 858 smokers suggests. The article says “more and more research has found that e-cigarette use isn’t a reliable path to quitting cigarettes.”

      I used it myself to quit, I smoked for 23 years and quit in 2 weeks. The first few days I still smoked while also vaping with apple flavored vape juice. Then I stopped using cigarettes and just ate an apple jolly rancher to sate the oral fixation and continued vaping, after a week or so I stopped vaping all-together and then all I had to do was quit eating jolly ranchers(which was easy, I don't really like candy). I was really surprised with how easy it was. It worked SO well! That was 3 years ago. To say that vaping devices do not help people quit just isn't correct. Perhaps vaping devices are just not used correctly and with a plan to quit.

      Doctor Mike I quit with the nicotine gum cold turkey after 10 years of smoking a pack per day. After vaping for 2-3 years i still don't have a cough, where as with smoking you have a bad one. I highly suggest the gum! Vaping just eggs the problem on and I don't believe it helps you to quit. Either way, it takes will power.

    Men have nipples because mammary crests are formed in the first week of gestation, before the embryo gets (or not) the testosterone that defines if is a boy or a girl, wich happens between 5th and 7th week if I'm not wrong. So if the embryo becomes a woman, that's a useful part, if she wants to be a mother, if the embryo becomes a man, is just a reminder that you could have been a woman. 😂 That's a joke but, you know... I hope I have explained this correctly, I'm not English speaker. 🖖

After I finished cancer treatment I ran into my family practice doc who had changed offices while I was undergoing treatment. He had acted quickly when I found a lump in my breast even though I was only 32 and it easily could have been hormonal. I had an aggressive type of breast cancer and he saved my life by pushing for a biopsy when other docs wanted me to wait a month or two to see if it went away. I got to thank him which meant as much if not more to me than him. 5 yrs cancer free now

      @janklas7079 3 ปีที่แล้ว +230

      This is rubbish. If you define gender as male/female/other, so biological, your gender is determined at the moment of conception, as it's genetic.
      Men are not females in the womb, but the early fetus does not have sexual characteristics yet. So men and females are the same in the first stages. And both have about 6-8 nipples. In further development, all but two of those dissapear, but not always. This why some people have 3 nipples, or even more.

    If you’re wondering why men have nipples , it’s due to the 23rd chromosome of a male being an x and y pair. A Fetus begins it’s life as a female regardless of whether is has a Y chromosome of not. Nipples develop very early before the male characteristics kick in. Hope this helps.

    The fetus begins as female when in the womb. When chromosomes form, those determine whether the body that is forming forms male or female parts. (This is something you learn in Psychology)

    • @gkeller1031
      @gkeller1031 4 ปีที่แล้ว +97

      If I remember correctly (I'm a psych student), it's not so much that it begins "female" as much as it just begins neutral. It's the SRY gene on the Y chromosome that initiates male development and halts female development. Without the presence of that gene or if the body fails to respond properly to its effects (in the case of androgen insensitivity syndrome) the fetus continues to develop as female. Before that point, no uniquely male or uniquely female development happens, so I hesitate to say that all fetuses start female. What you said is basically correct since female development is a continuation of the development that happens pre-differentiation, so it's just a technicality.

    As I understand it, men have nipples because in the embryonic development, the sexual differentiation occurs after the breast primordium forms, so when the embryo develops male gonads, it already has mammary gland and nipples.

      Basically, when you're in the womb and still developing, your body is in a 'neutral' or 'middle' state in a sense. Your body prepares certain body parts in advance, and when your organs controlling your hormones develop afterwards, those hormones determine which body parts grow fully or not at all.
      In this case, male testes which are called gonads (the female version is the ovaries) produce testosterone, and that hormone doesn't make breast tissue grow in men in the same way a female's does as men don't lactate/give birth/etc. and they have a higher amount of testosterone in their bodies than females. It's quite interesting to learn which body parts would change if you were born the opposite gender. I highly recommend looking it up! :)

    Nice that you have a rational reaction/attitude about vaping. It is not for kids, and parents should do what they can about it.
    As a former smoker I do vouch on ecigs being great alternative on quitting, if you are not able to quit regular tobacco cold turkey.
    There is great amount of studies done in last 10 years about ecigs, but there is boatload of bad studies, or should I say, bad interpretations about them.
    Agenda driven science is not science, and it is not good for any of us. Best to admit good and the bad, no cherry picking.

      I agree that if you don't already, you should not start. Taking dicetel out of the equation (hopefully the aware user asks) and of course, you should not use nicotine, that leaves the question how is inhaling the byproducts of the chemical reaction we call combustion not clearly and explicitly more hazardous than inhaling two food-grade liquids that are not burning or combusting in any way, but rather undergoing a phase change from liquid to vapor (think water into steam - the water is not burning)? Of course, we should inhale only air and maybe a few medicines, but how close do you live to a major highway?

    Doctor Mike: why men have nipples.......because they form before gender. Every fetus begins developing the same way. Gender is determined about 6 weeks into the pregnancy, long after other anatomical structures (heart, lungs, brain, and so on). So everyone has them. I learned that in high school bio!

    • @alexandradelgado1007
      @alexandradelgado1007 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Andrew Balto I also learned that in High School

      Andrew Balto My highschool didnt cover nipples forming as a fetus.

    • @jasonphluffer1814
      @jasonphluffer1814 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      drawingangel2 Not nipples forming as a fetus....nipples (and all other anatomical structures---heart, brain, hands, eyes, lungs, and so on) form before gender "assignment" occurs. Gender is actually one of the last parts of the fetal development. Because every fetus forms the same way, every person has the same non-genital parts.

    • @pv3566
      @pv3566 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's also why guys have that little seam on their taint, it's formed when the foetus starts to determine gender and what would have been a vagina closes over and the penis and testicle begin to form.

    • @havek23
      @havek23 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah we didn't learn about nipples specificially in high school bio, but we did learn that the skin develops first because all the organs need to be contained inside and separate from the embryonic fluid. So skin develops first and all the holes in that skin (ears, mouth, nose, nipples, anus...) need to be created because you can't make a hole later.

  • @vincefr.d
    @vincefr.d 6 ปีที่แล้ว +46

    Hi, I´m a medical student, in case you are searching in the comments the answer of why men have nipples, well here it is. During pregnancy, women and men are not fenotipically differentiated until later on, men express a gen called SRY to differentiate from women until 14 (more or less) weeks. But the gens for "nipples" were already expressed, so men keep the nipples but not all the mammary tissue because of this SRY gen.

      Not true. I'm in highschool, and no one thinks of you any higher of any less if you smoke or not. The flavours are a big reason. Also, it's a social thing for us "let's go out for a smoke" and stuff like that, but if you refuse no one will think you re a wuss or something. Some smoke because of stress, some because they think the smoke looks cool, some because they tried it once and liked it or got addicted. Kids that vape don't do it to quit smoking. they do it because in the long run, they say vaping is cheaper (idk wether that's true or not)

    I am really happy with how you approached the topic of vaping and smoking in general. Just for some history I was a drug addict (fetanyl, sorry if I spelled it wrong) and alcoholic since the age of 13 and it lasted for 9 years until I was 22. Anyways I started smoking cigarettes at like 20 and let me tell you, I have been able to get clean from fetanyal and alcohol for almost a year now but I have not been able to quit smoking. I started vaping to quit cigarettes but it didn’t help I just became addicted to vaping instead. I have smoked for 2 years now and I have a bad cough all the time and my throat hurts constantly. So even through all the OD’s I have suffered and all the mistakes I made while high or drunk, I truly wish I had never started smoking. I’ve tried gum and patches and nothing helps. I know it is shorting my life drastically and that truly saddens me. Wish I had never started.

    Love the Channel Dr. Mike.
    According to the "American Lung Association" diacetyl causes popcorn lung, not propylene glycol.

    The squatty potty position is actually a biomechanically better way to poop. The position relaxes the levator Ani in the pelvic floor, relaxes the pelvic floor and allows stool to move more easily. I treat numerous people with pelvic floor dyssynergia (I'm a pelvic floor PT) and changing your position is helpful for many many people. But I do agree with you that there is big marketing for it. You don't need to go out and buy something. Putting any sturdy household item you already have underneath your feet to raise you knees above hip level will work just fine. 👍

    The biggest gripe I have with Vaping is that it reversed decades of progress on Nicotine usage among teens and young adults. We went from below 10% to close to 50% now which is 1960s levels of nicotine usage rates.

      Honestly I think nicotine inside a marijuana based cigarette would be an incredible idea as a means to quite smoking regular cigarettes and move towards cannabis as a stress relief tool. Sounds about right. Half of the people I know vape, and many of them will act like "no smoking" signs don't apply to vaping and get defensive when you tell them not to blow vape fumes onto everyone and everything. As someone who is allergic to nicotine (my body reacts to secondhand exposure like it's poison ivy), this is really frustrating.

    • @THE_SOSC
      @THE_SOSC 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sarahroth7034 you can actually press charges for that. It falls under chemical warfare. Same can be said for pouring bleach onto people which is what some feminazis learned when they tried pouring bleach onto mens crotch areas for sitting with their knees apart.

    • @Alkis05
      @Alkis05 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@sarahroth7034 Well, "no smoking" signs shouldn't necessarily apply to vaping in my opinion. The problem with public smoking was not the nicotine, but the smoke of burned stuff in it and all the poison in it. The nicotine is absorved by the vaper (and the smoker, for that matter).
      There is not much research done on secondhand vaping, to be honest. The only reason we have 'no smoking' areas is because it was proven to be a detriment to non-smokers, specially kids, which should never smoke. Also, there were long term studies that proved that. So far, short term studies has not shown much evidence that it is detrimental in the case of vaping. A more sure problem is related to allergies. Nut allergy is very common and some vape liquid with nutty flavour is enough to set off some people's alergies.

    A spoonful of sugar, or something sweet like square of chocolate, overwhelms the vagus nerve. I've been told this many times. We first heard that chocolate helps hiccups from Nanny Piggins. We have used this trick so many times since, because my younger brother has a hiccup-burping tick that causes him to hiccup-burp so violently that he can't breath, and the chocolate used to make it stop for a little while.

      Agreed I also have a problem with people going to urgent care for the same thing and I was bleeding from my head and waited for a hour meanwhile they had the sick people go ahead of me while I sat there with my head still bleeding

      triage exists for a reason. go to the ED if you think your symptoms call for it, regardless of how "serious" anyone might think. you're in charge of your medical care, not them. if you're triage'd to wait for a long time, it typically indicates you are a low acuity level, or that there are a lot of high acuity that day ahead of you.
      The idea that you want someone to talk about ED's being a waste of time seems to indicate that you work in one and you're tired of the whiners lol

      alf Ford Urgent care is for someone who needs to be seen but doctor isn't open. Urgent care usually takes care of stuff like a doctor's office would. Bleeding from the head is something you go to the ED for.

      Melissa Parker Sometimes it looks like a cough but isn't. I'm sure people has thought I was misusing the ED with my kids. Son was having a hard time breathing but only outward symptom was a cough(he has asthma) . Same thing with my daughter. She had rsv and oxygen was at 87 but she looked fine. When in reality she had to be put on oxygen because nothing was helping open her lungs up. I seen people give us dirty looks but they don't know the whole story.

    I'm so so late so no one will see this probably, but the squatty potty or something similar may not be necessary for the average person, but is SO helpful for someone like me who struggles with pelvic floor dysfunction
