Make no mistake. The President can direct the full force of the government and all the money you ever need, just by saying it, he can also quickly write an executive order.
The second way is Congress get called back into session for an emergency session to appropriate the money to North Carolinia, tennesse and get things organized. Obviously that didn't happen they are incompetent but one thing to never forget is they are absolutely positively not out of money!!

    • @ShaneSimmons
      @ShaneSimmons 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

To be fair it looks like they're trying to do it the right way, by letting the Speaker call an emergency session, but he's said that they have to wait until the damage assessments come rolling in and has said that probably means nothing will happen until after the election.
Show of hands, how many people think Speaker Johnson is actually waiting for damage assessments?

Tarheel expat in Japan for 42 years now. I used to take heed of Hanlon's Razor, but becoming cynical with age ... have reversed it to "Never attribute incompetence to that which can adequately be explained by corruption." But in thinking about it, maybe being forced to attribute failure to incompetence or corruption leads to a fallacy of informal logic, the fallacy of bifurcation (false dilemma). Failure probably can be found on a dynamic continuum between the two. Trauma tends to push us into over-simplifying with an either-or.

@@shaneandmelody those are 2 different budgets. pLus.. FEMA's yearly budget is for its normal operating expenses. Each disaster is funded with appropriation bills. It has always been done this way. Even the sate governors are saying this. As for first response. FEMA is not exactly a first responder organization. first response for disasters is done by the state and local governments which depend a lot on volunteers. FEMA is meant to help the state pay for the disaster relief. It also provides logistic support, but this generally does not happen in the first days. There are no FEMA first responders. The states can call up the national guard. ... So no FEMA money went to illegals. It is a different budget. If you want to complain about the budget. That is fine. but saying they spent fEMA money on illegals is like saying they spent FEMA money on building an air craft carrier. It is a different budget. so that no one decides I'm some sort of agitator. I lost my home in a major disaster. I wont say which president delayed the funding, but it wasn't a liberal. so as you said. this is not a liberal or conservative issue. The problem we have today in government jobs is one person gets a job, gets ‘promoted’, decides to get their friend or family a job in government. So the grateful friend feels obligated to bestow ‘gifts’ on the person who got them the job. Then that person gets promoted and it’s the same situation over and over. The point is, MOST of these people are NOT qualified to do the job. But it doesn’t matter, everybody is getting kickbacks from the workers yet no one knows how to correctly do their job. This has become a joke around here, stand around and watch someone else do the work while you’re getting the top pay - we call it ‘government work’. It’s gotten so corrupt there’s no going back. I’m glad you don’t want to fathom maliciousness. That’s not the case.
I’m a local Western North Carolinian, born and raised. My family has been here since they immigrated many moons ago. I am also a 911 dispatcher of 21 years.
I love this area with all my heart.
This is devastating on so many levels.
I think one of the large problems is that people don’t know what FEMA does.
There is a lot of misinformation and disinformation, and there has been for several years.
Many people think of them as Storm Troopers.
They are supposed to clear the roads, get the power on, restore communications, fix the roads that are in ruins, reconnect every community, etc.
And do it in a little over a week.
In total deviation when it comes to several areas.
At the same time they are allegedly taking over shelters, confiscating aid, taking peoples houses and land, finding out the political affiliation of every person and refusing to help them if they support Trump, etc.
And they are doing it all in a little over a week.
I know this is the worst that has been seen since the Great Flood of 1916 which wiped out many of the exact same areas..
We have had localized disasters and damage from other storms over the years that has required a response from
FEMA so I still want to ask people when they have ever seen FEMA clearing their roads and restoring their power.
FEMA does a lot of things but it is more helpful to think of them as paper pushers.
All the utility workers that have responded into area from all over America… that’s due to FEMA contracts.
It normally takes power companies 2 days to survey storm damage. They can’t make it to most places they need to survey here.
The land that power poles stood on is gone in several cases.
These men are humping it up mountains on foot, carrying heavy lines.
All the responders from all over WNC and America that were waiting here before the storm hit, and have continued to come in… That’s FEMA.
    Shelters? FEMA.
The people reimbursing local EOCs and first responders? FEMA
The people covering costs responders at state and local levels cannot even being to cover, especially volunteer departments that lost most of their emergency vehicles?
    FEMA.
The people helping residents file claims for assistance due to damage / total loss?
    FEMA.
Many don’t know that their restored communications, if they have this; is because of FEMA.
FEMA worked out a deal for Starlink days before Trump pretended he was working out a deal with Elon - who is being paid. He is not donating squat.
They also did a contract with Verizon for temporary satellite towers and that is keeping many of us in the loop.
One thing people have to keep in mind is that emotions are understandably high.
People have been through trauma. They are experiencing loss of life, and loss of communities they love. They are grieving.
People are coming into the area, finding people in hard hit areas that already feel cut off and alone, they are feeding them
conspiracies and misinformation and then they are shoving a camera in their face to capture their rants about an organization that they know nothing about.
The area is full of con artists, scammers and identity thrives and has been for days. Several warnings have bern put out about this.
Again, some people are making their way into the hardest hit areas, talking to people who are completely isolated, telling them FEMA isn’t coming, FEMA says no one is trapped, the National Guard says no one is trapped, the NG isn’t doing rescues… all while FEMA and the NG have given routine updates on people trapped, shared footage of rescues and air drops for days, etc…
These are people that have refused to go to shelters. They have no services at all. They are in areas that take awhile to get to and by the time FEMA works their way to them the well has already been poisoned.
    It’s endangering and hurting people.
The amount of disinformation is grotesque and so are the political games being played with peoples lives.
*edit to fix autocorrects and thumbs

This one is specifically about how disinformation is harming Appalachians right now and it is largely correct, though there are more issues with scammers on the ground.
This dude is a Republican (though that doesn’t matter), former military and an information analyst.
Most Appalachians should know that we are experts in shutting people out when we think it’s necessary.
This can be deadly in a disaster when the “outsiders” are trying to help.
Locals in several cut off and deviated areas, who are traumatized, grieving, are refusing to work with FEMA and the National Guard.
They won’t tell the NG when people need to be saved and they won’t tell them when an area has been checked and cleared due to disinfo.
It’s risking lives in an incredibly crowded airspace and on the ground.
This also highlights why people shouldn’t latch on to every civilian/private helicopter pilot was threatened with arrest story when they only have one side of it.
Especially when that pilot diverted his flight plan on a whim when he saw people waning for help.

Good talk, Shane!! Numerous TH-cam videos state that FEMA was/is directly interfering with voluntary recovery functions. I've even seen a couple of videos in which law enforcement urges people NOT to donate to FEMA. It's hard to believe that the amount of 'anti-FEMA' social media content is all contrived. FEMA is a large, 'regulated' organization. As with all 'regulated' organizations, it is procedure/policy-driven down from management to individual. (And I worked for a 'regulated' industry for 30+ years). Individuals are taught to not 'think on their feet' and If they do they are reprimanded, it's reflected in their annual review and they could even be released. Additionally, all decisions must be 'approved' by a chain of command. This being an election year, I can not help but think the slow FEMA response is somewhat by design, to prevent a sector of individuals from voting. I feel the anger and frustration toward FEMA is very warranted. Also, some of the frustration is probably a result of 'conveniences lost'. In the last 25 or so years, we as a society (by design) have become personally reliant upon internet & cell service. Banking, bill pay, purchasing, medical, communication...all of life's essential functions are now done 'electronically'. A loss of these functions definitely affects one's thought process and may put a person in a basic survival mode psychologically.

This disaster in my home state is a geographical nightmare. The infrastructure of this entire area in western NC was pathetic before the hurricane. The mountain folk prefer an isolated lifestyle, and many of them live hidden up in densely forested areas. So with no road access, no electricity and zero communication, how fast did they expect to be rescued? People are talking out of both sides of their mouths. Please tell me what government is perfect and which country it is. Our country is huge and doing better than most. The United States has many problems. The world does. I'll tell you what does not help anybody and that is whining and complaining without action. Contempt prior to investigation. There is a lot of ignorance and misinformed theories floating about this disaster. What bothers me is the 157 million sent to Lebanon, and they say Fema is out of money, and it took them a week to get there...if it wasn't for the locals jumping in lives wouldn't have been saved, roads cleared and opened!! No matter what it's a huge tragedy!

@ChildOfGod0777 Biden released the monies for each state hit by the hurricane. I imagine by the 4th quarter FEMA does have less funds. They were not a week late. Prove it.

@ChildOfGod0777 show me the facts of Biden sending 157 million bucks to Lebanon.

That would be lying and no it’s not the same money. That was trump who stole $38 million from FEMA for migrant issues.

Haiti's troubles boiled over and never really recovered following an earthquake, as my gran would say, be careful what you wish for.
