A huge thank you to everyone who has watched our short film, left positive comments, and helped those affected by Helene's devastation from Florida to North Carolina. We’re truly humbled by your love and support, and we wanted to be sure to share a bit more about the journey that led us to pass through Asheville when we did.
So first and foremost, we are full-time touring musicians and documentarians, since we’re always on the road, you can find us with a camera in our hands documenting everything just like we would do on any other day. (this is how we got the footage you saw in the film)
Since 2018, we’ve been living out of our 2012 Dodge Grand Caravan. Right now, it has 208,000 miles on it, the engine works but the side door is broken, and the trunk doesn't work as of yesterday night, but it still gets the job done and we’re grateful this van has kept us safe and can haul all of our gear!
On Wednesday September 25th, 2024 we loaded up all of our gear and left Indiana (as our mid-west tour had just concluded) and we were super excited to head to Charlotte, North Carolina to start a Artist Residency which would give us time and space to record new music and prepare for our upcoming Christmas tour, kicking off right after Thanksgiving at The Morris in our hometown of South Bend, Indiana.
After we left Indiana we had heard that a hurricane was heading for Florida, but we didn’t think much of it as we just thought it would hit Florida and then dissipate as it made its way to North Carolina. We expected that the outer bands would carry some heavy rain and winds. Honestly, we had no idea that it would be this catastrophic- growing up in Indiana we had no clue that Helene could maintain such power and travel 800 miles and that the eye of the storm could hit Asheville!
Now, here’s an important detail to note: as we got closer to Asheville, just 32 minutes away, the rain started pouring down so hard that we could barely see out of our windshield so we turned our wipers on full speed, and then within two minutes we heard a super loud bang on our windshield. To our shock, the passenger-side windshield was completely gone, and the driver’s side windshield wiper had buckled leaving three inches of space to see out of as the rain was pouring down. To this day we’re still not 100% sure what exactly happened to cause that windshield wiper incident, and right now as of October 6th we’re still without a passenger-side windshield wiper as the mechanic shops are booked for another week.
Once we arrived in Asheville around 3:21 AM on Thursday, we spent the night, and woke up to heavy rain, we called some local shops to see if they might be able to fix the passenger side wiper on our van. Then after talking with them we quickly realized after looking at it more closely the passenger-side wiper mechanism was extremely damaged and completely shoved under the hood and off the track, so the local mechanic's couldn't get us in quick enough to order the new part and fix it.
Since we couldn’t get the passenger side wiper fixed on Thursday September 26th, we decided to wait it out, so we booked another night at the hotel and we planned to leave Asheville with a bunk passenger wiper once the rain has stopped on Friday as the many weather stations had reported that by noon on Friday the rain would subside.
So we thought it would be safe to travel the rest of the way to Charlotte on Friday after the rain stopped as the drivers side windshield wiper was the only one working.
We hope this gives a bit more context as to why we were in Asheville and the issues that kept us there. Of course we have been feeling all of the emotions and have learned a ton from this experience and will share another video about that with you all soon.
In the mean time, thank you for all your love, light and support! We really appreciate you being part of this wild journey and above all we deeply appreciate your prayers and donations for all the people and communities left in the catastrophic wake of Helene.🙏

You guys are lucky you were able to stay in the safer side of town. I live in Fairview which is south east Asheville. My area including Gerton, Bat Cave, Chimney Rock, Lake Lure, as well as swannanoa and Black mountain has been devastated. It’s hard to believe this even happened here. Terrible mudslides and floods killed a lot of people and destroyed roads and forests. I was without power, water, and cell for 2 weeks. Many people I know are still out of power and water. But as you mentioned in the beginning of your video, this tragedy has brought us all back together….dissolving the differences that have created terrible separation in our country. I feel a great paradox of emotions from grief to heart opening beauty. I’m an herbalist so I’m serving my community by giving away formulas for stress, depression, anxiety, and grief. Many people are stepping up to help one another. Glad yall made it out of here safely. Thanks for sharing your experience. Why is Elon Musk being refused drop offs of Star links so people can communicate and get help. Why do we not see choppers other then private ones trying to rescue and deliver necessary live saving goods to save lives and being intercepted by govt agencies??? I see the illegal immigrants getting all kinds of food at the checkout line pay with their EBT cards, while the American families are behind them, buying beans and rice and having a little. The American children are basically starving, while the illegals are getting steaks and steaks. It’s unbelievable to me to see our American children starving while the illegal immigrants get all our money that we pay taxes into. American families are starving, homeless, living on the streets, while all these illegals get everything. I see it daily in the checkout lines, and on the streets. We need help.

The small mountain towns of western NC and eastern TN were hit very badly, to the point where not just homes were washed away, but also the land underneath them. The death toll is underreported in the MSM. Lots of reports of so many dead bodies that the stench is a problem. Adding up the various local reports I've seen, and doing some extrapolating for the areas that haven't been able to report, it will turn out to be thousands, not hundreds. Lots of private rescuers jumped in early, in one place, almost 40 privately owned helicopters showed up and got to work around day 2 or 3, and were doing the Lord's work until various units of government shut them down. Government people don't like it when they're not in charge. Booty-jug shut down the airspace completely over the area, before any National Guard were deployed, and NC governor was doing nothing. FEMA was late to arrive, but quick to shut things down. Lots of truckers reporting that they were told to turn around and take their loads of supplies back. Apparently the optics coming out of the freedom social media got bad, and the government loosened up somewhat. I found X the best place to get info.

As things move forward, and more is known, the death toll will probably rise. But I saw a video that a guy made in NC where he went to one of the communities where people said the stench of bodies was a problem. He found a dead horse and that was it. No stench. Local people confirmed that then stories weren't true.

I'm not sure this couple deserves thanks. With all due respect how do you plan a trip that goes directly through a hurricane? All they did was cause more congestion in the disaster area.
People need to humble themselves. If the authorities requested for residents to leave the area. I'm pretty sure they didn't want tourists in the area. I'm not trying to be overly harsh this whole video just seems incredibly irresponsible.

    • @acebilbo

It needs to be documented by good filmmakers who are showing the on the ground events. They were coming to stay and had no idea about hurricanes. This shows how unprepared most people are in the US when it comes to natural disasters, but it is great to see the coming together, which also happens. Regardless of why they were there, I think this is an important piece of film. We hear about how bad it is, but being across the country and never ever having gone there, this gives some context. Thank you for filming. Obviously, stay safe.

I was the director of nursing for a new hospice inpatient facility during Katrina. I only agree to be the director after I was reassured that we would not try to evacuate patients since there were emergency generators on the roof and we would be in the 5th floor.
We had enough fuel for 72 hrs, so when we lost power, the clock started ticking. When we found out we were not going to get more fuel because it was being taken by FEMA and it became obvious that New Orleans would be shut down for months, getting the patients out became the priority.
It is a long story , everything that happened, but we were blessed in so many ways. I can remember it like it was yesterday.
Watching yall discuss the realization of the dire situation that was impending and the need to get out, I know how you feel.
Mobility Impaired vans arrived from the sheriff’s office from a town about 90 miles away and we were escorted to the Mississippi River bridge by National Guard.
We were told to follow close, keep our windows closed, eyes straight ahead, do not talk to anyone, and definitely do not stop.
We witnessed the aftermath of massive looting at a WalMart on the way-- empty TV boxes all over the parking lot, NOT stuff people needed to survive. Now the National Guard was there and barricaded the doors. Every pharmacy in the area had been looted. Our last night we were there, we could hear gunfire and glass breaking. The devastation was NO WHERE NEAR what has happened in North Carolina, but the violence was rising.
The most haunting memory for me was as we got to the top of the on-ramp for the bridge, there was an elderly couple with 2 pet carriers and whatever else they had been able to escape the rising water with. They were yelling at our caravan “WHY WON’T ANY IF YOU STOP AND HELP US!”
On the 10th anniversary of Katrina I was interviewed by the local newspaper. I have always said if I had it to do over again, would I do it. Absolutely, hospice patients are on the bottom of the priority list for evacuation, we were prepared to have to be there for a month- but with no fuel and rising safety concerns we had to get out ASAP.
Like I said earlier, it is a long story. A lot was learned from Katrina. Now there are plans for evacuation of EVERYONE.
But the devastation from Helene I have seen in all the TH-cam videos is gut wrenching. Who would have EVER thought that there would be this much destruction!!! Who could have ever imagined -- speechless.

When the reports of Helene & Milton started coming in it gave me Katrina vibes. Especially the mandatory evac zones from Florida, no gas & highway's jammed. My heart sank as I watched it unfold from Australia. I know it may sound cruel, but if ppl have lost their home, why not move somewhere safer to avoid this again in the future. Climate change has made weather unpredictable & so much more severe. I wouldn't rebuild somewhere that it's only a matter of time it happens again. Sending prayers to all severely affected

@@KatB79 My house was the only one on the block that did not flood, but lost part of the roof and the outside staircase was blown down with a wall and tree (it was a 2-story duplex, daughter’s family lived up, I lived down). With only access to upstairs gone and the water damage, I gave the house to my 19 yr old son- which he gutted and rebuilt- and I got a house out of the Bowl of the New Orleans area for the rest of us.
We thought we were safe from ever flooding again, but in 2016, there was a massive flood. A “river” with a riverbed that was 30 ft across and 12ft high never had any more than a few inches in it. You could walk across it and not even get your ankles wet. But even though we were the length of 2 and 1/2 football fields away from it, it made it to my house. My daughter had planned to build a house closer to the “river”, thankfully they DID NOT because she would have had 8 ft of water-- I was “blessed “ with only 18 inches.
I think that anywhere it rains it can possibly flood- or at least some kind of regional disaster. Gotta be prepared for anything- we even had a BLIZZARD in 2008- in Southern Louisiana!!!
