I honestly love the idea of this game, there's something extremely bohemian about putting you in control of the most dingy, loathsome, unlikable little rat in fiction and then telling the player "Go crawl around in the dark and eat birds". There was genuinely some room for some truly bizarre and unique stuff. It's too bad that it is... y'know, the way that it is.

Then we see two choices appear, one possibly faded and difficult to choose based on actions taken throughout the game, requiring more effort to convince Smeagol/Gollum to do.

Vinny does a far better Gollum/Smeagol impression than the voice actor of this game EDIT: My opinion has changed; the devs weren't going for an exact replica and they did a good job with a different style of voice. I played the Deponia games and even with those I ran into technical issues and softlocks. These guys in my experience are NOT competent when it comes to programming thier games, and in my opinion they aren't very good at being funny either, at least thier english translators from thier original german aren't.
This game feels and handles like an early 2000s xbox game but somehow it nearly has the graphic fidelity (in some places) of a modern project. It's strangely retro but not in a good way. Also, Gollum's massive glassy golfball eyes and strange moving mouth are haunting but at the same time I was laughing to the point of wheezing and tears.
This is legit like the Vivendi LotR games from the early 2000s that they made to cash in on the movies. In fact I think it shares some of the voice cast even.
This feels like one of those hyper-obscure low budget licensed PS2 games you only find out later on and only play because you’re curious as to why they’d make a Beverly Hills Cop game in 2005

The Studio (Daedalic) is usually known for very entertaining and good looking point and click adventure games. Seems like they bite off too much for this project.
It's worse than I'd imagined. The studio isn't bad, but I wouldn't say they're notable either (in other words, why trust them to deliver on such a huge franchise?). Then there's the publisher, Nacon. Formally BigBen Interactive, they're most well known for screwing over the dev team of The Sinking City. Explains the dlc and probably the sorry state the game is in.

Honestly I think a game where you crawl around as an awful piss baby would've actually been kinda fun if done right, the main issue seems to be that it's just a complete nothing game. You follow a linear path, basically acting out cutscenes exactly as the developers want you to and you get a game over and sent back if you stray from the path even a little bit. I guess it kinda feels like Stray in a way, except without any of the qualities such as visuals, story telling, music and charm that actually made that game work.
Yeah I was just thinking it feels like they saw Stray and wanted to make that but couldn't figure out why that game was so likeable. I mean a lot of the appeal of Stray is the protagonist is a cat and therefore cute, you can't really do that with... Gollum.
This game reminded me a lot of Styx: Master of Shadows, but way worse. You play a literal goblin in that game, it's also stealth-focused, the graphical qualities are quite similar (Styx is from 2014 though). Basically Styx: MOS is a great game to check out instead of this, much cheaper too.

The sad thing is, despite what everyone says about it, the concept of a Lord of the Rings game based on Gollum is actually brilliant. An interesting character with a unique movement style that spans the entire saga, who is as likely to eat you in the dark as cower in stealth. A great and a unique choice for a character based LotR game. It's too bad they didn't prove the concept by making a, you know, good game.

It's easy for people to forget the before times, but before Jackson's movies implanted on everyone a visual identity for the Lord of the Rings, the popular conception of Gollum was less of an Andy Serkis goblin and more of like... one of the creatures from The Descent. Daedalic is a pretty small developer who impressively managed to buy their way out of publisher slavery to become a self-owned company. Most of their games are classic 2D point and click games. I can fully understand their wish to try something bigger and more challenging within a big and well-known franchise, but I just don't get why it had to be a game about Gollum. I hope they can weather the losses and go back to what they're good at.
To be totally fair to them, their stories are typically about unassuming characters doing some very important crap usually after digging their way out of metaphorical holes and such.

On this topic, I always thought this interpretation of Gollum was slightly inaccurate. Too human. He's described as almost a half-fish/amphibian. I'd imagine he'd have some razor sharp teeth and sunken, huge, super-reflective eyes like a fish. Or a dark cave creature. Never really vibed with the favorite interpretation of the movie.

I don’t think the idea of making works inspired by Tolkien’s legendarium is necessarily bad. There are plenty of things alluded to in Unfinished Tales, the Silmarillion, and the LotR appendices that were never fleshed out, but I don’t think thus far anyone’s done so successfully. I really want one of these to be good and creative some day but we get stuff like this.
I assume they only give the IP rights to bigger studios and productions, resulting in bland garbage. I wonder what would happen if some proven cool indie devs got to make a LotR game of some kind.
I thought of an idea of a co op game where you play as the Blue Wizards in their journey in the East. Since little to nothing known about those two and what happened to them and Tolkien left very few details about the peoples of the East it could work with a good interpretation

The Studio (Daedalic) is usually known for very entertaining and good looking point and click adventure games. Seems like they bite off too much for this project.
It honestly feels more like development hell.
It's worse than I'd imagined. The studio isn't bad, but I wouldn't say they're notable either (in other words, why trust them to deliver on such a huge franchise?).
Then there's the publisher, Nacon.
Formally BigBen Interactive, they're most well known for screwing over the dev team of The Sinking City. Explains the dlc and probably the sorry state the game is in.

Honestly I think a game where you crawl around as an awful piss baby would've actually been kinda fun if done right, the main issue seems to be that it's just a complete nothing game. You follow a linear path, basically acting out cutscenes exactly as the developers want you to and you get a game over and sent back if you stray from the path even a little bit. I guess it kinda feels like Stray in a way, except without any of the qualities such as visuals, story telling, music and charm that actually made that game work.

Yeah I was just thinking it feels like they saw Stray and wanted to make that but couldn't figure out why that game was so likeable. I mean a lot of the appeal of Stray is the protagonist is a cat and therefore cute, you can't really do that with... Gollum.
This game reminded me a lot of Styx: Master of Shadows, but way worse. You play a literal goblin in that game, it's also stealth-focused, the graphical qualities are quite similar (Styx is from 2014 though). Basically Styx: MOS is a great game to check out instead of this, much cheaper too.

The sad thing is, despite what everyone says about it, the concept of a Lord of the Rings game based on Gollum is actually brilliant. An interesting character with a unique movement style that spans the entire saga, who is as likely to eat you in the dark as cower in stealth. A great and a unique choice for a character based LotR game. It's too bad they didn't prove the concept by making a, you know, good game.

It's easy for people to forget the before times, but before Jackson's movies implanted on everyone a visual identity for the Lord of the Rings, the popular conception of Gollum was less of an Andy Serkis goblin and more of like... one of the creatures from The Descent. A horrifying cave-dwelling cannibal ghoul that was made terrifying and pathetic in equal measure by the ebb and flow of the whims of the One Ring.
Daedalic is a pretty small developer who impressively managed to buy their way out of publisher slavery to become a self-owned company. Most of their games are classic 2D point and click games.
I can fully understand their wish to try something bigger and more challenging within a big and well-known franchise, but I just don't get why it had to be a game about Gollum.
I hope they can weather the losses and go back to what they're good at.

On this topic, I always thought this interpretation of Gollum was slightly inaccurate. Too human. He's described as almost a half-fish/amphibian. I'd imagine he'd have some razor sharp teeth and sunken, huge, super-reflective eyes like a fish. Or a dark cave creature. Never really vibed with the favorite interpretation of the movie.

I don’t think the idea of making works inspired by Tolkien’s legendarium is necessarily bad. There are plenty of things alluded to in Unfinished Tales, the Silmarillion, and the LotR appendices that were never fleshed out, but I don’t think thus far anyone’s done so successfully.
I really want one of these to be good and creative some day but we get stuff like this.

I thought of an idea of a co op game where you play as the Blue Wizards in their journey in the East. Since little to nothing known about those two and what happened to them and Tolkien left very few details about the peoples of the East it could work with a good interpretation
The supplementary material for the role playing games can be pretty good.
