yeah it's kind of impossible to give franchises that already have prominent horror elements the .exe treatment
A few things could work for making an exe game that uses existing gameplay, i think the only game that does it well is that pacman exe game that is just pacman but with more distressing elements.
Something to the effect of Samus trapped in a bunch of corridors made with game sprites being haunted by either Ridley, the multiple Metroids she's killed before, or the funny suit from Fusion could work, maybe, if it isn't just another walking simulator

I think something that really hinders this kind of video game creepypasta stuff is the obsession with making everything so overly graphic and supernatural, like on the one hand you've got the typical shit everyone makes fun of like tears of blood and h y p e r r e a l i s t i c gore, but on the other there's also this fixation with making these "haunted" games address the player themselves, which is a major misstep IMO.
The things that inspired these kind of creepypastas are shit like that weird hidden screen in Sonic CD or the hidden images in the Game Boy Camera, and while those are just a creepy looking gags, it's the idea that there's some weird spooky, very real thing hidden in your game that's the real horror aspect, but when you take that shit too far and make it absurdly over the top and implausible, it gets hard to take seriously. It's no different to Squidward's Suicide or DED BORT where the thing being described is way too absurd to be credible, and I feel like you need a small element of believability in your premise in order to make it relatable and familiar enough.
That Essence game kinda pissed me off tho because it was ALMOST good, like the idea has a lot of potential and that weird black and white image was legit creepy, but everything involving the Mario characters completely ruined it.

yeah, a lot of it went too hard on being supernatural and overuse of blood as you said. I feel it should utilize weird glitches and bugs that usually happen in games more but make it more unsettling and tense at things being out of wack.
Totally agree. IMO one of the few creepypasta "games" that did the haunted trope well was probably Petscop. However, even then it did seem cliche and unrealistic at times. I feel like most creepypasta games always try to go for the entity "trapped" in the game trying to communicate with you, and it usually gets dumb at that point. Like a game will be unsettling and then all of the sudden jumpscare you with a "GET OUT." or something similar which ruins the whole feeling up until then. That and overused glitch effects that look like just a filter that doesn't actually affect the game.
With all these cliche "a hyper realistic face screamed at me with bleeding eyes" .exe games, its so good to have a funky interesting experience like DonkeyKong.exe
The funny part is, i can't tell if that Nintendo.EXE creepypasta game was meant to be a parody of .EXE games or if it was actually trying to be spoopy scary.

Boy that Metroid game really downplayed Samus's abilities. She wouldn't have gotten splatted on spikes at all, she would've at worst just went "oof" and then, depending on player competency, wall kicked up and out of that shaft. That horn segment in DonkeyKong.exe when Kranky was falling is actually the same horn bridge used in Kokomo by The Beach Boys. I recognized it immediately when I heard it play with all the crazy visuals.
The people who make these games are the same people who get scared at "I called the boss baby at 3am" style videos.

43:42 - Any time one of these games says that you need to increase the volume, they might as well be saying there's screamers and jumpscares. As I've explained, jumpscares are not scary. They're startling. Unless you know they're coming ahead of time, but don't know when and they keep edging you on them. Overuse them, and your scary movie/game/story stops being scary.
The antisipation for jump scares can be scary though.
I prefer slow fade in scares, though.
@@andrewprahst2529 That's exactly what I said. But if you overuse jump scares, like many horror movies do nowadays, they lose their effect and at best are just startling with the end result being that the audience laughs after the scare.
jumpscares are almost entirely caused by audio, if you were to just have a spoopy image pop up it'd be mildly surprising at most.

The thumbnail saying “cursed tendies” reminds me of this old TH-cam channel I watched in about 2017 or so that would upload daily compilations of Greentexts. I kinda miss those, spooky stories are still good for doing chores to but for some reason I can’t even find those old compilations anymore.

I know it wasn't really shown off extensively here, but I can't help but like something about Super Mario Dolar. It's not exactly great by any means, but it has heart, and seems way more like a work of passion than a lot of other creepypasta type games
If there's one thing that destroys the immersion immediately with these .exe games(before they can destroy themselves by just existing for a hot 5 minutes) is when they don't even use the correct SFX or BGM that correlates with the game.
Or when they use sprites and other graphic assets that don't belong either. I think the worst offenders of what you mentioned are probably the overuse of the Kefka laugh, the Majora's Mask theme (don't know the name), or the Gygas Theme.
File extensions are certainly creepy!

It's pretty different. Doesn't have the same type or level of crust that Game Maker's 3D engine can offer.
Super Mario Dolor actually gets really good and creepy later on. One of the best creepy Mario games out there. The game is genuinely good once you get past the crappy beginning.

Switched from the Majora's Mask format to some fake forums that Jadusable set up where people could converse with some of the ARG's characters and get clues on how to progress the story in 2010, stopped in 2011, and then suddenly came back in March of this year with new Majora's Mask stuff and another fake website. I actually just finished making a playlist of all the videos in the series if you're interested, although there's a decent amount of info that you can only get from reading through the wiki since the sites from 2010-2011 I mentioned before sadly no longer exist.

People are missing the point that to be genuinely scary, you need subtlety- something none of these games have.

A test/demo/beta/etc. of a recognizable classic that is notably darker, quieter or heavier in its subject matter is a believable concept because that does actually happen
