  • Leaving Langdale Valley we followed Stickle Ghyll to Stickle Tarn below Pavey Ark. From here we skirted around the Tarn to the base of Pavey Ark and the Grade 1 scramble of Jake's Rake. After climbing Jake's Rake we then walked to Harrison Stickle, Pike of Stickle and finally Loft Crag before descending via Dungeoin Ghyll and the valley floor. The walk was carried out in the unseasonal warmth on 6 November 2011. Music by Running up the Hill - Placebo, Biffy Clyro - Mountain, Queens of the Stone Age - No One Knows & Foo Fighters - Big Me.

    Fantastic video! Did almost exactly the same route with a couple of mates last September in similar conditions and your video brought a big smile to my face remembering a great day out on the fells. Thanks for sharing.

    Awesome video. My two lads and I walked up here on a gloriously sunny day last October. We by-passed Jack's Rake though (my choice). This brought back great memories. Thanks :)

    this is a great vid. some beautiful shots of stickle tarn and surrounding area. when i was there a few weeks ago i didn't know about jacks rake. i went up via marks gate and took in loft crag, pike o stickle, harrison stickle, thunacar knott and pavey ark peak, great day. only when i was comin down my old man told me about jacks rake and i thought' i like the look of that. i'll definatley be back for jacks rake, looks good.

    Many thanks for your comments. I appreciate it. Got to say I've only really been walking seriously for a few years. It doesn't take too long before the urge to climb these routes takes over though and thats before you start wild camping, hehehe. Hope you find my other videos as good. Thanks

    Fantastic! Im a bit more scared looking at vids and pics of jacks rake than i was gearing up for striding edge - but I did find striding edge really fun and the big scramble up at the end was fab! Have wanted to do blencathra for ages too...if Julia Bradbury can do sharp edge im sure I can!

    Hi Gary, yes we are going along the Corridor Route and did my first ascent of Scafell Pike via Piers Gill. That place is just awesome. I got my first taste of scrambling by the edge of the Gill. I know and where people do go wrong, especially if its misty or going dark. I nearly came to grief there when coming down off Lingmell. I will have along for Lonscale Pike
    Thanks Ang :)

    Doing Lords Rake next month and the Scafells and Sharp Edge is penciled in too.
    Thanks Gary, it wasn't that bad in the wet and I had a nice strong fella in front who pulled me out the tight bits. Those bothered me more than the exposure. The weather added a more sinister feel to the place and extra excitement. I got up front on purpose it as to make it more trickier if I decided to bottled it.I would do it again but not yet. Cheers Gary, great video too :)

    Fabulous vid ! best one I've seen of JR. I was up Pavey Ark on Saturday with my wife and went to look at JR at close quarters and it looked steeper than expected from the base but we had not planned to do it anyway. We've only started walking seriously this year (kids grown up at last!) and have done about a dozen high level walks including Striding Edge although in the mist unfortunately. I think we both need more scrambling practice before we tackle JR,

    Exactly, to be honest I find Sharp Edge just fun!!! Check out Lonscale Pike's video's, he seemed to go up Sharp Edge every day and I met him and his dog after we wild camped at Scales Tarn last year. Really nice guy with a great selection of videos showing Sharp Edge in all weathers. Enjoy Jake's Rake!!!

    Well Done Ang, not sure I'd have been so happy doing it in cloud and the wet. What next? Have you got the scrambling bug? I'm hoping for a Cullins trip in Skye though I don't want to push my fears (and abilities) too far..... yet!

    • @charlierose182
      @charlierose182 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Have you done the Cuillins yet? Have to say, I was rather put out by that 100 best walks in Britain, t'other day. They included the Fairy Pools, but didn't really touch on the magnificent Cuillin Range. Hope to do the West Highland Way, though the first bit looks rather boring! :)

    @themuss28 Honest you guys would love it!!! Granted, not sure I'd be comfortable with a full pack for wild camping but don't ignore it. It helps you focus!!! Hehehe.
    Dave, Muss, camp below and try it out.

  • @Clareatron

    Fab! Doesnt get much more comprehensive than that does it!? Would you say that Jacks Rake is scarier than striding edge? (lol which we did yesterday after a lot of planning and watching your vid - I even kept saying "we've just achieved Stridings edge!") as my pal, who has done jacks rake before, thinks Striding is more exposed and has now given me her blessing to have a go at Jacks! Please advise your thoughts! How long does it take to do it? Thanks!!

  • @gazfisher1000
    @gazfisher1000  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes, in my opinion Jacks Rake is more scarier. Striding Edge is exposed but it's easy to identify the route, I think there are sections of JR which require more care! It doesn't take too long, say an hour and I'm probably being very generous but why rush it!!! Remember it's not a race :-) You'll love it!!! Also give Sharp Edge a go, again it requires respect but I feel Striding Edge is worse. Sharp Edge is just intense

  • @gazfisher1000
    @gazfisher1000  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Lord's Rake fun, I've got to go back and do that preferably with sunnier conditions than my last trip, though like your climb up Jake's Rake, the weather made it more sinister. Are you taking the corridor route to there then on to the Scafell's? If so, you'll get a good view of Pier's Gill and why it's infamous. Love Sharp Edge, check to see if LonscalePike has done anymore video's. He used to climb once or twice a day and video it.

  • @gazfisher1000
    @gazfisher1000  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @northlakes34 Hehehe, cheers, it's not that bad. It's good fun in the gullies though at some points the legs did wobble a bit! It defo worth doing though. Andrenline keeps you going, though don't try it for the first time with full wild camp gear !!!!

    Have you done Kilnshaw Chimney to Red Screes? Haven't been able to find much on it! One vlog called it "Hell"..looks ok to me, but would be nice to know! :) (No-one Knows...!!) Another good track there!

    • @gazfisher1000
      @gazfisher1000  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Charlie, no sorry I've not. But you've got me thinking now that I need to do it. I've only walked up Red Screes using the path from Kirkstone Pass (link below). I've had a scan at it online and have to say to looks ok to me as well. I might give it a miss this weekend but it's one I'm adding to the list, so thanks for giving me another route!!! Hahaha

  • @paultaylor4957

    Hi Gary, another Fab wander it seems as I drift through your videos. A question for you if I may (in a sec). My first Wainwright, Striding Edge, I did in mist from Red Tarn upwards. It got steep toward the end and on summiting (too) near the shelter I realised I'd drifted right on the climb. Happy I did it but, in hindsight nervy as I was climbing a steeper curve and was glad I couldn't see down as it was steeper than the normal route up onto the summit! My question : I want to do Jakes Rake and Sharp Edge. What would you say are the good/bad things I need to be aware of in comparison between those two and Striding Edge? Thanks for your time. Paul

    • @gazfisher1000
      @gazfisher1000  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Paul, yes, it's quite easy to "drift" in the mist, though it's always preferred to drift during an ascent rather than descent!!!
      Good question and I think many people have difference views on each but in a nutshell my are;
      Sharp Edge; relatively short (the main exposed section isn't too long), not as high as Striding Edge (I get a greater feelings of exposure on Striding Edge!), has some easier lower paths if the ridge is too daunting, the route can be a bit vague (like Striding Edge) after the initial "edge" is passed, it can be slippy in the wet!!!
      Jake's Rake; a good length climb, definitely requires some scrambling (hands on), it does include a couple of more awkward moves, once on route there are no "easy" lines such as on Striding of Sharp, provides the feeling of greatest exposure.
      All the routes are preferred in clear conditions, I'd also suggest Lord's Rake on your to do list.
      Hope this helps and I've got video's of these places which may help prepare you though there's nothing better than being there in person!!!
      Enjoy and thanks for you comments

    • @paultaylor4957
      @paultaylor4957 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary. Thanks for that. I guess when you read reviews/comments about such walks/ climbs you get those from people with climbing skills who say its a doddle, and others who thought they were going to die (total novices). So trying to get the "reasonably keen middle aged family man, with fellwalking experience/all the right gear/head for heights, but doesnt get out much" perspective is hard to define. I'm definitely up for these challenges. Your videos are the best I've seen anywhere so will be looking at more in between daily life (kids/work). Thanks again. I'll let you know what it was like for me, when I get the chance to get across there. Paul

    • @gazfisher1000
      @gazfisher1000  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Paul, I know exactly what you mean. Before I did these routes I struggled to get the "average" person's view of them. I would hope I'm the fairly average person who is just a bit more adventurous than the normal walker (which is why I've done these routes). Hope you enjoy them and I'll look forward to your views on them (obviously hoping for good weather as any inclement weather first time round would swing opinion greatly). Glad you like the videos. atb
