We have been living in North Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 for more than 16 years and have seen all the beautiful areas and last week we’ve been to Lake District for the first time ( me & hubby, children visited from their high school as a geography trip) and we loved it. I’ve set myself a challenge this summer to see each and every lake in The Lake District. I managed to check Ennerdale Water off the list on Friday, but I’ve still yet to see Hawes Water, Lowes Water, Hayes Water and Devoke Water, plus I also need to actually set foot on the banks of Brothers Water and Bassenthwaite Lake, having only seen them out of a bus window en route to Glenridding and Cockermouth respectively.

      Haweswater isn't technically a Lake. It's a man made reservoir, built in the 1930's and early 40's to provide Manchester with drinking water..... The drowned village of Mardale lies in the bottom, and is occasionally revealed if the water levels drop enough in times of hotter weather.....

      Be very careful flying a drone in the Lake District, as the RAF and US Air Force use the area for low flying training, and they can appear without warning. Also be aware that the National Trust do not allow the flying of model aircraft or drones from their land - which extends to 4000+ acres of the Lake District.....

    As someone who was born and has lived in the Lakes all their life, I tend to head over to North Yorkshire when I want to get away from the crowds. I like the fact that North Yorkshire is *nowhere* nearly as commercialised as the Lake District is. Oh, and Grasmere is a *village* not a town......and it's not Grasmere Lake, it's Rydal Water.

    A good start! Next go to the really beautiful Western Lakes, in particular, the amazing Wastwater. Wasdale and Eskdale are enchanting, and Wasdale not only has England's deepest lake, but also the highest mountain, Scafell Pike (pronounced scaw-full). Eskdale has the La'al Ratty minature railway to Ravenglass. It also has the start of the extreme Hardknott Pass to Langdale. 3:1 ascents and descents....
    Lastly, there is only one "lake" in the Lake District ~ Bassenthwaite Lake, north of Keswick. The rest are either "meres" or "waters". The smaller ones are "tarns".

      We stayed on the outskirts of Ambleside by Windermere last year and it was so busy with day trippers at the weekends it might as well have been Blackpool. On the Monday though everything went back to normal - thank goodness. Back there again in a couple of weeks and I don’t think this year it will be any quieter? Who cares - it’s still The Lakes. Enjoyed the travelogue and your take on things to see and do.

    What is the best airport to get close to the Lake District (for the US)

    • @ToucanTravellers
      @ToucanTravellers  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Manchester Airport is probably the best. It has flights to many US cities and the drive from Manchester to the Lake District is only 1hr30mins. Hope that helps 😊

    Have read online that privatized water companies are dumping their waste into it so not sure its safe to visit might want to avoid swimming in it or breathing in the fresh stink air .

    • @paulm2467
      @paulm2467 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You shouldn’t believe all the rubbish that you can read online, water companies take water out from some of the lakes and they have to ensure its purity. Powered Boats are banned in these lakes for this reason. Why would they dump waste, (what waste, you don’t need anything but a pipeline?) into their source? It makes no sense for them to pollute their own supplies either business wise or for ecological purposes. Swimming is banned in some of the lakes that are used for water, mainly because it’s dangerous, the water is extracted,treated and filtered like all water in the UK, it has to be because of natural pollutants such as dead animals.

    • @Brian-om2hh
      @Brian-om2hh ปีที่แล้ว

      No water companies are pumping waste into any lakes near here. Try not to believe everything you read online..... The nearest to have traces of waste is Windermere. You really shouldn't drink water anyway, because fish p*ss in it.
