Ah man, I did this scramble (my first and probably last) some years ago with friends, and my heart was in my mouth. We didn't quite realise what we were getting into. You're absolutely right to mention in the description that the video footage doesn't quite do justice to how difficult, scary, and dangerous Jack's Rake Scramble can be. And yes, you're also dead right that once started, turning back isn't really an option available to you.
SagaciousFrank Haha yeah man just did it today, honestly thought I was gonna die at some parts was gonna call rescue ye probably first and last last doing it.
This a great little scramble. Always check the weather first, last time I went up it was raining. Which makes it a different animal. Slippy and bum clenching in part. But on a sunny day it great.
I turned back just before the tree, and I'm glad I did it, because it was raining couple of hours before. I think I you pass the tree, then there is no way down, at least for me. Also I didn't realise how difficult it is. Didn't watch the video before
Scrambled Jack's Rake maybe 6 or 7 times.... and it never ceases to deliver! a good representation of the whole experience.... Thanks! I still found myself gripping the arm of the chair, just watching the vid....... how you didn't stop and get a breather at the Rowan tree, I don't know! :)
I did this in 1994, my two team mates disappeared upwards, a guy passed me with a collie dog on his back! I got to the exposed bit and stopped for several moments, coming to terms with having to swing my body over the drop to reach the next handhold!! It was over in a second but have no inclination to repeat it. They took my photo climbing onto a ledge higher up, my eyes like saucers!!
you know i watch these and love em then think back to running around the Welsh Mountains with freidsn with no fear and wonder just how non of us never once went tumbling .. great vid live near here will have to give it a go fer old times sake
Great video guys! Did this in the summer a few years back, When was the video taken? I'll be up in the lakes this weekend but might have to give it a miss with the weather being as it is!
i'm watching this as research for whether I want to try it or not, to get a sense of how well I think I'd handle it. I've heard there's a particularly exposed bit, could someone point out where on the video it is? Thanks
It’s at 10 min 30sec. This is the place where most accidents occur. Follow the 3 points of contact at all time rule and ensure the conditions are favourable and you will be ok.
did this yesterday and shit a brick. had a good 15 minutes about half way up at 10:15 contemplating how to do the next bit. not technically that hard but bloody exposed!
Nice vid, shame about the sound quality. Brought back memories of doing this route a few years ago. I notice that your mate didn't have a rucksack, did either of you have any kit, food etc?
Thanks for the comments. The sound was somewhat muffled as the GoPro camera was in a waterproof case. Neither of us had rucksacks, we just had a water bottle each and some cereal bars in our pockets. Best way to travel, nice and light.
Look here everybody, Stu's another 'expert' who knows better than everyone else..... he even spent years as S&R (although I'm calling BS). Just a thought....have you ever seen any fell runners whilst saving all and sundry from themselves? Obviously not! They carry nothing at all. You stick to commenting from your arm chair and leave the adventure to those of us who dare leave the house without a 20kg rucksack.
This is obviously way too much of a step up from striding edge (for obvious reasons). I noticed you weren’t testing the holds much. How does one tell whether a hold is safe without testing it?
I'm not great with exposure but have done Jake's rake with a couple of mates, on a dry day it's a great exhilarating scramble, in the wet it's a completely different proposition ! so long as you have your wits about you, and as you say test those handholds before you commit you should be fine. Quite alot of it has a ledge you can "hide" behind. Although you should also know your own abilities.

Excellent content thanks. I did Crib Goch c. 2014-5 and don't think I'll be starting a scrambling career anytime ever.
Great technical climb with some fab views. Really enjoyed watching this and will undertake this climb with the dog very soon.
Thank you for the raw footage. Now I know what I am up against.
Classic scramble with a very tiring scree star 😂 good video mate! Keep them coming :)

Great scramble, love Jack's Rake - one of our regulars !

Excellent clip... and conformation that I would freak out on those two exposed shelves!!! V-I-R-T-I-G-O CITY!!!!!!
We leave that for the Euro Finals 😂
I did this as a very little girl. It's an easy enough scramble if you're small, but not advisable.
Brilliant video, really enjoyed it. Well done!
Stu, no he fell 250 ft died outright broke every bone in his body. Mountain rescue and raf boulmer got him if the crags.
I am sure i can hear your heart beat!!! Thats excellent
stunning footage.

Better to be safe than sorry as they say! It's a great route up there, plenty of airy sections to get the nerves jangling.
The sound on this is frightening!....it comes across as really slippery!
What I want to know is, how do you get back down?.....surely not the way you go up!!!!!!
There is an easy way up and down. This video is the most difficult.

16 mins wrong way!
WTched with trepidation, reached the point where I realised my husband fell from on July 16 th 2008 and switched off in tears
sorry to hear about your husband, Dave. hope you're doing ok these days and your daughter is fit and well.
I detest mountains!
