I couldn't find any one in Korea saying her fat or chubby. Naver, any internet news, her instagram or what e v e r. Since around early 2000s, Koreans are not interested in miss Korea. I didn't know who's the winner and so does most(99.9999%) of Koreans. People don't really know who is the miss Korea so the contest winners and the contest org keep trying to make any issue about them such as wearing ridiculous cloths etc. Then, they become some news but still most people pay no attention on them. How can her weight be ever controversial when people don't know about her?
@@penguino3480I have to differ, as the beauty standards have already changed in HK. 45kilos for 160 is not called fat in HK. Unless you are sort of skinny fat something that is quite common in mainland as some girls don't eat but don't do any sort of physical activity so they end of with weak frame and just gain fat in some areas over the years while maintaining skinny legs (in my opinion not a great look). But they don't weight much as they have very small frame and little muscle. Nowadays beauty standards in HK are more toward a toned body regardless of your height and weight. This was influenced heavily by the west of course.
She wasn’t out there to win either, she just wanted the experience which I felt gave her that edge and set her a part in many ways. It’s good to be competitive, but when you don’t have that pressure it becomes a better experience for you ( I think). I’ve joined drawing competitions where it wasn’t my intention to win but to join in on the experience and the community of people joining and I ended up winning. I feel when you don’t have that pressure the whole thing is a lot more fun and winning is just the bonus.
Miss Korea 2018, Soo Min Kim is the personification of both beauty and intelligence with a flawless command of the English language. South Korea should be proud of having such an accomplished lady as their representative on the world stage.

She can talk english fluently. She could even win in Ms. Universe without interpreter. She's naturally beautiful. Edited: Everytime I watch Ms. Universe, the representatives from South Korea uses interpreters in Q&A
She won because she's the whole package: beautiful, intelligent, intelligible, and has a warm personality. Some Koreans are insecure with people such as her that are smart and pretty, and so their instinct is to just pull em down.
She won because she's healthy and her face doesn't look plastic like the other girls. She seems so real and just an all around great person. She deserved to win!!!!
I don't get why some people target those who get plastic surgeries and portray them in such a bad way, I personally think there's nothing wrong with it. Some people get plastic surgeries for health reasons and others do it because they want to look good for themselves or because they undergo a lot of stress from people that bully them for not having a pretty face. Please don't insult people who have done plastic surgeries on their faces or anywhere else on their bodies. Ik you were trying to say that the woman in the video has a naturally beautiful face, which I agree with. However you just made it seem like you were shaming the other contestants just because they had a plastic surgery. Please don't do this and be more careful next time.
The reason she won is simple: the grace she possesses is all-encompassing. She is modest and humble, but not self-depreciating. She has confidence but it’s not deluded or overblown. She is incredibly candid, open and honest about her experience. She really does have it all and truly is all the best a competition like this can bring out of its competitors. She is a role model. 💯
Yes, I agree that inner beauty is attractive, but I disagree that outer beauty is just temporary. For human life, temporary means few months or few years. For me, beauty appearance can last from a baby to 60+ years old if we have good diet, exercise, and dress nice. I am 37 years old, but I look under 30 years old without apply any anything on my face. I eat a lot of avocado, salmon, berries, and vegetable everyday, and I do resistant training too. Having a good health, which makes me calm and happy everyday. I don't have bad temper because I have stable blood glucose level. If I don't eat anything in 24 hrs, I am still energize and not moody.
She deserves to represent Korea as Miss Korea! She's honest, polite and humorous, she doesn't have a fake 'kind, generous, talented and perfect' mask like other participants. She can say her insecurities out publicly, its not a thing normal people can do.

The society's beauty standard that these koreans put out for these girls are terrible and im hoping it would change someday, though we know that it is close to impossible.. :(
Tbh it's not all about looks. They want a well spoken and smart lady. You dont want a dumb girl to represent your country. Either way she is gorgeous and they really found the jackpot with this girl.
I think, she won because she is global. With how skinny the other contestants, the Miss World judge would have a hard time to win someone from Korea. You know.. Feminism at its best

I'm literally 163 cm and a little over 50 kg. If they want girls 10 cm taller than me to be 3 kg below my weight, then they'd better adjust their "slim" standards. Plus from this interview, I believe she is definitely fit to be Miss Korea. You can see her elegance, confidence, and optimism. Respects to Soo Min Kim for being able to win Miss Korea and deal with those negative comments. I doubt that half of the people who called her "fat" even is under 50 kg themselves.
The first Korean woman who I actually respect for being so real! Her dad is the real winner for wanting to protect his daughter from Korea’s impossible beauty standards.

When a person cries or is VERY hurt by something that is NOT necessarily directed towards themselves but to the people they love and that hurts them even more. Just goes to show how strong, loving, caring, loyal, and empathic individuals they are. I honestly believe that you were destined to win in order to inspire, motivate, and save so many people and to change those ridiculous and disgusting "beauty standards" that they have. No, they are just very appearance conscious and judgemental. But they don't mean to be negative or mean when they do that. Koreans, the Chinese and the Japanese are very focused on self-improvement. They dislike self-delusion or egotism. They think it's almost like being helpful to tell you the "truth." They are as hard on themselves or harder than they are on someone else. That's just how they are.
58.9 kg is not chubby or overweight by any stretch of the imagination at all. Also, she is absolutely amazing, both beauty-wise and personality-wise. I think they made the right choice of naming her Miss Korea 2018. A beautiful 24-year-old who has a bright future ahead of her in my perspective~~
As a someone who also had to learn English as a second language, I love her accent. She's extremely fluent, but if you listen carefully, you can also hear a hint of Korean in it. Some people in Asia, like myself, when learning English, we try really hard to get rid of our accent completely, which I think is bad. I love how she managed to retain hers in a way that's unique to just her.
That's true, i have confidence in my fluency but i hate my accent. I hate my voice in general honestly, ive grown more accepting of it but still, i make a face when i hear myself in a recording

Cherry picking and judging a whole nation just because of basic societal behaviour is just as stupid and ignorant. Korea in general is healthier than the average person that isn't Korean with higher life expectancy. Just because their society deems something fat or not doesn't mean their horrible, it's simply just their own understanding of what is normal. If you simply said we as a society should change our understanding of what is beautiful or healthy then there's really nothing wrong, but to deem another country as ignorant just because you have an opinion of what is healthy; whose to says who is wrong and who is right, just because you say so?
I had a similar experience actually, though I admit I am a man and its probably nowhere near as absurd as her situation. I grew up in the countryside, Naju specifically where I used to wrestle a lot as a kid. In Korea we have a traditional form of martial arts called ssireum, or Korean folk wrestling, which is divided by weight divisions. I am part of the Baekdu division, the largest of combatants, under 160kg to be specific. When I went to Seoul for the first time, to see family there, I remember people gave me this "ugly look" like I was somehow doing something wrong just by existing. People would ask me constantly if "I needed to sit down" because of my size or if I "didn't like exercise." My entire life until that point was nothing but training, sweat and struggle, making my body and heart strong to survive in the ring, because I had a personal connection with Ssireum. It made me feel strong, relying only on myself, trusting my own ability and courage to win a fight as who I was. Hearing so much judgemental and harsh words from people who never understood or cared to ask eventually broke me, and I quit ssireum altogether. Of course I am much grown up, but I never returned to Ssireum, because I felt like my own people judged me without caring to even ask. During high school I got bullied for being "fat" as well, despite the fact I would say I was decently sturdy and strong, because I didn't fit in or look like the skinny, cool kpop idols and stuff. It hurt. Not because nobody cared to understand me, but because I wanted to he strong for them, for my family and my hometown, to be strong and bring them victory, but those who I fought for were the ones that struck me down.
she is very pretty, not the typical "doll-looking" pretty but kind of more mature looking, and she is smart and speaks great English. I would not doubt she is a fair winner.
being able to speak "english" does not make her more qualified than other koreans who don't. It's quite the illusion foreign people fall for when labelling a person "smart" due to that person's access in languages particularly english rather questioning the roots of their motives or core personality
@@2Dtardeds Being smart can either mean being born with a high IQ or learning a lot through life. To say that someone who knows more isn't smarter than someone who knows less is a bit nonsensical.
Why do Asians describe some pretty people "doll-like"? Is it because they look like they can't be real because they look too perfect? I'm just curious. Also, how does being great at speaking English something that heightens IQ? Theres actually a study that concludes bilinguals having a harder time learning some things because of code switching, ECT. So her being smart because of her speaking good English doesn't necessarily equal high IQ :/

58.9 kg 173cm...... and they call her fat????? Insanity...
@@penguino3480 which country are you in and how tall are you? 45kg can't be fat even in Korea in most cases.
@Ta'Jah Mary right! That's skinny here.

Completely agree with this statement.

It hurt. Not because nobody cared to understand me, but because I wanted to he strong for them, for my family and my hometown, to be strong and bring them victory, but those who I fought for were the ones that struck me down.
no wonder she won, such a kind soul and beautiful personality with a soothing voice. My God I love her already almost cried with her
Yeah I did.
I cried already 😭😭
I know right she is such an amazing
I just wish South Koreans will be more open minded and less judgmental about looks and weight
Yes couldn't agree more , she really deserve the title and the crown.
she is very pretty, not the typical "doll-looking" pretty but kind of more mature looking, and she is smart and speaks great English. I would not doubt she is a fair winner.
being able to speak "english" does not make her more qualified than other koreans who don't. It's quite the illusion foreign people fall for when labelling a person "smart" due to that person's access in languages particularly english rather questioning the roots of their motives or core personality
@@2Dtardeds It's supposed than learning another language makes you a little bit smarter because your brain do things, Idk
@@2Dtardeds Being smart can either mean being born with a high IQ or learning a lot through life. To say that someone who knows more isn't smarter than someone who knows less is a bit nonsensical.
English is her native tongue dude, she is supposed to speak "great" English, how that's a qualifier of her intelligence is beyond me.
So her being smart because of her speaking good English doesn't necessarily equal high IQ :/
wtf she looks so pretty here. and her etiquette is really worthy of the title.
I just instantly fell in love with this beautiful girl's personality! She is probably the nicest, most genuine, and humble person I have ever seen on the internet! xx
This girl has :
*Looks*
*Personality*
*Being generally amazing*
AND
*She's taken the 'backlash' so well*
We need more people like this ,
Random Internet Person and she’s smart (I assume, she’s majoring in business and that’s not easy lol)
I'm so glad she won so she can speak out.
Yeah, she’s amazing
we need more people with personality and being generally amazing, not the looks
vibe? Yes!
can we talk about the managers being afraid that the contestants would pass out in the bathroom. the fact that its a legitimate concern is so so problematic.
Before they're on an extreme diet
goes to show they know that theeyre causing health problems and eating disorders
The fact that they still stick to that kind of stupid beauty standard even though they are well aware it does affect a person health is really stupid beyond doubt. Maximum stupidity 😆
@@metalbasher820 for the people forcing it upon them, yes. but for someone who still goes on with the disordered eating, its not their fault. its hard to get out of it, and theres just so much pressure.
maybe they also want to prevent someone getting bulimic bc that would be negative media if someone finds out .. And that would be their biggest concern, i bet..
Am I the only one who loves her voice.
It’s so smooth and makes you feel calm😌
Once * Army omg you’re here too 😂
Once * Army YOOO SAME, SHE COULD BE A PODCAST SPEAKER TBH
Right. She chose a good field to go into then. Her voice will be an asset as a broadcaster.
I know I watched it like 5times
Ikr
The Judges reminded the Citizens about Beautiful personality and Ideal Healthy Body as the ultimate Winner of the contest.
She has a natural charisma and composure. One of those intangible aspects. I can see why she made it. All the girls were beautiful. She was special.
Bela S she outscored the other girls by a mile in the question and answer portion, she’s very intelligent and calm under pressure.
Congenial i believe is the term.
true and she didn't come from a fashion-related background either
Listening to her experience has been worth the effort for sure. I agree, I can see why she won.
Where does she live btw(country)? Im amazed by her absolutely perfect english.
"Fat shaming " a skinny woman... this world is truly upside down.
welcome to Korea
Naah just Korea 😂
I'd rather have a Nancy than a stick 😂
Nope just South Korea
fat shaming is actually referring to the body fat itself, not only people who are overweight
I think we can realize from this video why she won the competition, she is not only beautiful but also natural and honest.
This kind of beauty standard is not only in Korea, it’s everywhere in Asia. All models and actresses are less than 50kg its freaking scary
*60 kilogrammes is considered fat in Korea*
Koreans would lose their minds if they go to America 😂
It is in a lot of Asian countries I think, I'm 172 cm and yes my family thinks I'm fat when I weighed 63 kg. And they still think so, I weigh 57kg now
HAHAHA, LOL! that's truee!
Especially to a WalMart..
Meanwhile indian moms tease you for being fat and make you eat a lott
muffin roha Chinese parents too ㅠㅠ
6:25 If you've had an eating disorder, you definitely understand the reason why these girls were passing out and weren't allowed to go to the bathroom by themselves. So sad.
vomiting?
Cynthia A. possibly, or they could be depriving themselves of nutrition and/or overworking to the point of collapse. there are multiple factors and drawbacks to EDs.
@@lainareese5777 sometimes we get so caught up in the mindset we get dehydrated too
Preach! As soon as she said she didn’t know why, I was like, oh ma’am, it’s for vomiting.
I knew it even though I've never had one-
It's quite logic if you think of the context :/

Her personality alone deserves the title...
You wouldn’t be saying that if she wasn’t attractive
@@aikaterineillt9876 i still would.

it’s so cool that she just did it on the side to “try something new” and literally won the national title
the girls who have been doing this since birth must feel so bad 😂
I like how she just lowkey joined the competition real chill without a specific or very emotional reason and ended up wining unexpectedly
She deserves it 👑
Like Lara Dutta.

@@adriananinoartigas5880 HAHAHA
She is so beautiful, not just aesthetically but character, intellectual, heart, and soul. She is the definition of what a beautiful PERSON is.
Exactly
She truly is so beautiful! And I really like how natural she is. She has a great personality too! Wishing her the best!
I realllly want to like this comment.
Yes, from what we have seen that is the case. But we can’t say for sure since we haven’t seen her react to a dire situation on a personal level (by personal level I mean more like how she would handle conflict with people she cares about). I’m not saying that ACtuAllY ShE PrOBAbly HAs A bAD pErSoNNality, just that we can’t exactly say she’s a beautiful person from the evidence presented. Though said evidence definetly points in this direction.
I now right? This whole time I wasn't pay attention to the interviewer. But I was looking at her the whole time! I couldn't take my eyes off of her. 100/10
imagine thinking that a 5'8 woman is overweight at 130lbs when in reality she's only five pounds away from being underweight for her height
Which BMI scale?
FYI the World Health Organization actually advises that Asians use a slightly different BMI scale because studies seem to indicate that their bodies are less tolerant of fat and are meant to be skinnier.
@@larrychunk8667
Race shouldn't be brought into it, we're all human. Even Asians that are 5'8 and 110 pounds would be considered severely underweight.
[Edit]: Looked up the BMI chart for Asians and anything 50kg(110 lbs) or under was considered underweight for someone who's 5'8 or taller. 55kg(121 lbs) to 70kg(154 lbs) is a healthy weight.
@@perfectyoongi6639 Race does play a role in body type
My ex gf was 5'11" 80kg. I like 'em thick.
Perfect Yoongi it should
She didn't cry on camera when she was talking about how she felt about hurtful comments. She cried when thinking about how it could hurt her *family*.

“She’s not pretty enough to represent Korea”
*I’m ready for war.*

What will you fight with?? Memes 🦊🦊😂😂
Its like opposite she's way too pretty to represent korea...
IAM with you
By your side, soldier.
The miss korea committe did a great job choosing her as the reps of korea. Congratulations!
Herdhanu Jayanto agree!! 💯% !
Riiiight??!!! Their decision is pretty Progressive. That is surprising. I hope Korea will become more reasonable when dealing with women's rights and human rights issues.
Definitely the right choice from what I can tell. I think they chose her because of her wonderful personality as well.
Yup, she's very well spoken and is educated aswell. How is that not good enough to represent korea? Certainly better than just a pretty girl.
Yes. I think... The committee did a right thing by judging only based on talent and not just some kind of unrealistic beauty standard...
You know a pageant winner is humble when the first thing she says upon winning is “wow this crown is so heavy”😂
lol, and i think she meant it literally, not the metaphorical heavy 😂😂😂.. She's so awesome
@@whirpoolmind It could be both.
lol you're right!!☺☺
That literally has nothing to do with being humble
she didn't prepare speech too good
I m 44yo and I feel she has more wisdom than I have. Exceptional person, I think we will hear more about her in the future
I don't give a damn about her weight or look, she carries herself and speaks so classy it's infectious.
50kg is the limit?

@Moonbyul Kimie no, im 168 cm and look fat and indeed fat. But i just dont give a care.
She looked the most naturally beautiful among those other contestants, at least from those seen in this video.
@A k her nose looks natural, actually kinda like mine too
She seems to be 100% natural, I've seen other korean models, and I can tell the difference in the eye, nose, lipss, eye brows.
@A k maybe
Agree she's all natural...I can tell the difference to the other girls and even ordinary people has surgery..but soo min is natural~~

She was lovely. She spoke her mind clearly without hesitation and if u r an Asian, you know that it’s not something that a lot of us can do. Hats off to her☺️
Korea doesn't deserve her. Such an intelligent, kind, beautiful woman. She went into the competition with a humble attitude not expecting much and still kept that same humility after the competition 😄😁

Y'all need to relax. Just because I referred to the country of Korea does not mean I'm talking about everyone. I'm referring to the haters/people upholding stereotypes mostly. I'm thankful Soo is bringing her diversity!
Why dont Korea deserve her? We are not talking about N Korea.
@@lonniestevens7963 She was nominated Miss Korea (something only one woman can get per year) and she's a very kind-hearted person who everyone should've been very proud of to represent their country. Instead they called her fat and undeserving. :( If it was a small portion of people she would've gotten through this interview without any tears, but it clearly affected her. Her family was especially hurt.

She's pretty, intellgent and smart. She's open minded and she teach all of korean women to love themselves, love who you're, accept who you are. Weight shouldn't be standard of beauty, beauty shine and brigth inside of you. She just perfect. I adore her so much

There are lots of gorgeous people who are short, and all weights and heights. Look at Marie Kondo. There are also people who are "chubbier" and beautiful.
Hey i like your name, I agree to that!!
People mix up what it is to be beautiful.
i completely agree! however, her appearance is only ‘perfect’ according to society’s beauty standards, but she seems like an amazing person!
