I suppose the criticism comes from those saying that there are other basic needs that need to be met. A facemask may not provide physical basic needs, but its something that boosts emotional moral and shows them something different. In some ways, its more important. It gives them a light.
Because for so long all they could have was basic needs or less than basic needs...and seeing in their hands a face mask to so many seems so trivial, to the refugees it reaffirms that their escape isn't a dream they will wake up from, but a reality.

She must have gone through so much unnecessary pain, she deserved the happiness she got in the end. I’m so happy for her and everyone else that made it out of there and is flourishing! While it is somewhat naive to say so, I truly wish that all North Koreans stuck under the regime will get the opportunity to experience this kind of happiness.
Danny No, they aren’t. They’re influenced by ancient times where people that worked in the fields were darker, hence whiter people were perceived as rich and beautiful. Mahmood Massarwa That is the power of authority there. It’s a horrible hell. Their leader doesn’t care for his people at all. They are just workers that he can dispose of at any time and he’ll just get the next batch of them soon enough. The leadership there fully runs on controlling fear. Though sadly only for him, not anyone else, eventually people don’t get effected by the fear anymore. And we are able to be told and find out what really goes on. One of these days his gonna get bit in the ass so hard by Karma. And that entire country is gonna celebrate.
PandaCub as a female, I would not have a child there. If that meant no sex, I would oblige to that. If circumstances made me a mom, I would take my life and my child in my belly to a better place.
Mahmood Massarwa I saw a documentary about few weeks ago about a woman who had one Single Bible verse written down. That's it. When it was found, they took her Entire family to the camps. Her children, husband, and her parents all arrested and she was the only one to get out alive.
We spent 2 years in S Korea when I was growing up. The mystery and horrors surrounding what we as kids knew about North Korea was chilling. These people are enslaved and impoverished. I wish there was something to be done to help them with inciting a nuclear war.

@Quick Dickson forty seven I think you know that obviously I don't mean just her, but clearly him and her entire family in general. Like come on dude don't troll on videos like this :/
@Quick Dickson forty seven I think the other 200 people who liked my comment would agree with me that everyone deserves empathy. It's not her fault. Her country is at fault. Until you know what it's like to live a day in her shoes, back when all of this was happening, you really can't judge or act like you know all the details. Sending you love dude, like for real it's okay if you don't agree with me, I just would think that if this was flipped and you were in her position, you would be so disappointed knowing that this is how your story was being interpreted. This is real....the freedoms people have in western countries, like we take it for granted so often. If you lived a day in her life I think your heart would break for her too.
@Quick Dickson forty seven So you should have empathy because none of that would have ever happened if it wasn't for the chaos and horror going on in North Korea. If her family had been anywhere else, she would have never had to make such choices. Hard choices. That clearly still haunts her every second of every day. I just hope she doesn't see these types of comments about her because she has so much love in her heart, I want her to know that her feelings are valid. In North Korea, her brother as the older male would have been taken regardless, he made the choice to protect her. There was nothing she could have done. It's hard to see it that way, but her entire family should never be in this situation in the first place..so the idea of placing blame on her is just so wrong. And for you to say you wouldn't wear makeup, that's not what the phrase "put yourself in someone else's shoes" means, it means to literally take on their emotions and all the information that that person has in that moment and then acting, not you and your current life. If you had existed in her world, you'd see it differently.
I got emotional 10 seconds in during the intro when she teared up while saying " and that's why I came to South Korea risking my life". I ended up tearing up again when I heard more about her story.
Well so many complain about beauty industry creating bad standards, so I guess North Korea tried to go the opposite, without realizing that it’s oppressive when persons choice is taken away.

This is why self-expression is so important. This is a reminder of how lucky we are to wear what we'd like freely when others risk their lives trying to do the same.
This reminds me of the dystopian novel The Giver. There everyone is the same and wears the same clothes and hairstyles. Maybe North Korea is where the author got inspiration from...

People wonder why you would risk so much for a face mask. It makes you feel human. When you have nothing, anything that makes you feel alive, is worth the risk.
@@AJ-il1lm8ph7z Not necessarily. Sanitary products are a necessity, and luckily in most of the west, a convenience. But, it is not the same. **This is nothing in comparison to anything these women go through; I'm comparing the feeling of being alive.** I was in the hospital for quite a while due to an autoimmune disease that had suddenly gotten out of control, and eventually went through a form of chemotherapy. After a while, I wasn't me anymore. You look in the mirror and don't see you. You are gone. A while later, my mom brought me a tube of mascara and some foundation. NK is a totalitarian state, but what is totalitarianism? Read this: medium.com/@franciscopaterson/totalitarianism-worst-of-the-isms-f02e8055bed1
I suppose the criticism comes from those saying that there are other basic needs that need to be met. A facemask may not provide physical basic needs, but its something that boosts emotional moral and shows them something different. In some ways, its more important. It gives them a light.
Which is also why it's so infuriating seeing people criticize other people on welfare for daring to want or even have anything nice.
Sue ikr I think its crazy what that those small things can give some ppl
Because for so long all they could have was basic needs or less than basic needs...and seeing in their hands a face mask to so many seems so trivial, to the refugees it reaffirms that their escape isn't a dream they will wake up from, but a reality.
Her brother is such a beautiful, brave soul. I can't imagine how hard it must've been for him to do that.

@Quick Dickson forty seven I think you know that obviously I don't mean just her, but clearly him and her entire family in general. Like come on dude don't troll on videos like this :/
@Quick Dickson forty seven Put yourself in her shoes...this world needs more empathy.

Yeah because I think North Korea is run by Russia or something cuz I think they had an agreement after or before World War II and then South Korea is ran by the US thats why South Korea has freedom and North Korea doesn't ,I don't really know what the hell I'm talking about I learned this in social studies💀 if it helps I'm in the 6th grade and 12 years old

I'm always surprised that places like north Korea exist in this day and age , your a strong woman and I admire your courage and persistence to have something so simple that you shouldn't have to fight for ! Good for you 👏 ❤️
Imagine the pain in helping someone escape, and waiting for them, only to find out they died on the way there to you. I would be heartbroken.
(Edit, I didn’t expect this many likes, I’m glad so many of you agree)
Horrible feeling to imagine
The Kim family have *terrible 'karma'* waiting for them when they die...
'Deservedly so', however.
Adreanna Watters I know, I was heartbroken just thinking about it 😢

My mom was born in North Korea. I remember her telling me about how to government was corrupt and still is. She was starved as a child, but her neighbours were afraid to help her in case a report would be filed.
She is fine now and has never been better after meeting my dad
how did your mother escape?
@@jhopesnoseflute im not sure how OPs mother escaped, but i know there is a "soft spot" where some people escape from.. i was attending korean classes and the teacher had a student attend, but not for korean, for the later english class. We got curious about this guy so next class when he wasnt there we asked who he was and why was he so quiet, he explained he was from north korea that him and his mother escaped into china first when he was about 7, he and his mum was waiting for his dad and older brother.. they never met since that.. they stayed in china for 3 years and waited.. but nothing.. they then for some reason, moved to wales, UK.

Dyuuum, that’s too much.
@@chaldeokpai but I am curious to know how they don't get caught in China because Nk citizens are sent back. How they get housing, jobs in China without letting others know they are North Koreans.
How a place like this exists in 2020 I can’t imagine. Imagine the hell waiting for it’s leaders when death is freedom for these people.

Nirankaar Sharma they are only letting you see them from the perspective they allow. Of course they aren’t going to show you the real dirt and truth. Perception is not always reality.
@@nirankaarsharma6879 they have strict programs in place to brainwash tourists into believing that it's just propaganda. I think thousands of defectors telling us their experiences is surely more reliable than a country built on lies and brainwashing.
Well he might die and his sister might take over and leave everything the same or free the people.
Now think of what it would be like if someone’s sexuality, gender, etc were not “perfect”.
Her brother is a hero. My heart is completely broken for her family and her brother.

I cried because of what happened to her brother. Her brother sacrificed for her to have a better life. And I'm happy she's living in her dreams.
North Korean defectors are heroes, even the ones that didn't make it.
Meghan Monk i read defectors as dictators and was like wAIT-
Same here, read while scrolling and came instantly to reread😃
Especially the ones who didn’t make it... 💜
TH-cam needs to get true life videos like this to be viral, trending stories. We need to learn more about today's world. They need to stop pushing the drama between Trisha, Gabbie, James Charles, and Tati. Pety fights for fame don't matter. Real life stories of real life people who are living in today's world is what's important.
I am grateful, I am thankful, I am blessed

I cried and balled my eyes out when she talked about her brother I wish I could do something about it
I bawled my eyes out lmao
I wish one day the US could cancel the economic sanction and let them join the world business ...
I guess not passively supporting N. Korea. That sounds small but given the chance, people write it off, they give their tourist dollars to them, and they perpetuate the idea it's "not that bad," or a "real" war. I bet there's SK charities that help former NK survivors too. :)
I didn’t expect to shed tears when I clicked on this, but here we are

I didn't cry but a part of my heart broke knowing what people have to suffer through each day

Diane F I know, I started sobbing when she talked about her brother because it hit close to my heart
Thank you for giving us your information about what North Korea is really like. We know it is not good but never realized how really bad it actually is. Your brave to share this with us and I pray for your safety and want to know more that you can to share with us. I am so sorry you had to go through such a terrific life while you were there and thank Gok you are here now.
This lady that excitedly said yes to being a rebel is so adorable ❤️
I really want to still be alive when north korea becomes a free nation :(

Ah man I cried at the part where she said her brother took the blame and she escaped 💜 He died for his sister. Who does that these days?
trust me, there are people that do the same, they are just not being reconized

i always think of this video when people say women wear makeup for men’s attraction. they don’t, they wear it to feel human, to feel cared for, to feel comfortable and individual
