Thanks for another honest review Jon. Thank you for the shout out for Hope Mission as well. Temperatures hit -40C and thinking of those less fortunate and on the street right now is super important.
on the first pour I found it nice, but more oaky than I wanted. I swear I had splinters after taking a sip. but now on pour four that intense oak flavor has dulled, and this is a very good bourbon. Not the best mind you, but for the price this is a very solid bottle.
JBB is what first started me on my Bourbon journey. Back when it had an 8yr statement it was quite a value. Stopped drinking it for awhile but recently came back to it as my house bourbon. It won't impress any bourbon buddies but as a sipper by myself in the evening or a back yard barbecue it can accompany quite well. I find the White to be noticeably thinner in taste and mouth feel so this is still a good value and step up.
It is a step up. I wish I had some white label around to do a direct comparison, but I do like this. Certainly fits the bill when looking to sip while at the BBQ or just unwinding. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent, thanks for the reviews. I love the 10 minute (or less!) videos. If someone can't describe a whiskey and make me think I want to drink it or not in 10 minutes, then they're just wasting my time. And you've definitely convinced me to get some WT101. Sometimes I'll read/see/hear someone saying how much better a certain whiskey is with a bit of water or ice. Do you try whiskeys that way, or do you always drink them neat? I'd love to see some videos where the reviewer tries all three (neat, water, ice) and compares and recommends. I really just started drinking whiskey last year and mostly neat. This year I've mostly been drinking the same whiskeys with a single large ice cube and I find that I can get more flavors that way.
I try to keep it short, but it is so easy to just relax, sip, and keep talking! I always try whisky with water to see how it changes . Mostly I prefer my drams neat, except strong bourbon, then usually over ice. Sometimes I try to share my thoughts with/without water, but then it definitely goes beyond 10 min! Thanks for sharing how you enjoy a dram. Cheers!
Personally I find JBB to be quite good. It's just a good reminder of what good classic bourbon should tatste, and for a great value too! I had a bottle of JBB a few weeks ago that I sipped almost the entirety of it, I really enjoyed it! If you did a blind taste with JBB, WT 101, and other bourbons in a similar price point, don't be surprised to find out JBB the winner.
Hi Jon! First time I tried JB black from old style long bottle, named triple aged, not extra. I found it far better than white label, really enjoyed that bottle. One year ago I got current black label release, totally agree about it with your review, just quality dram.
Nice review! This is a good staple pour. It used to have a 8 yr age statement a few years ago. I drank my fair share of this one and still enjoy it and have it in the bar. Oh you should try devils cut its black label but more oak and char. WT 101 is one of my favorites. Cheers 🥃
I think is is not much younger, even without the age stamp, but I certainly prefer it when they can commit to an age. Thanks for the recommendation to try Devil's cut. I'll keep an eye out. Cheers!
Thanks Jon, the WT101 is a staple in my bar but I see JBB is on sale this week so might pick up a bottle just to give it a go. It's always good to try different brands, like you said everyone has a different palate! Cheers!
I love the journey! JBB was not as strong for me as I had hoped, but still easy to pour. I heard Devil's Cut is a bit better and they are almost always the same price here. I might try that soon too. Let me know if you enjoy JBB
This is new for me. I have been nursing the bottle since I am a old forester and wild Turkey person. Yet this classic Jim Beam flavor is good. It's mellow okay. It's easy and smooth. I like the price. It's growing on me even though I prefer 100 proofers.
Bought a couple bottles last week when it was on sale for $25 here in Edmonton at Sobeys liquor store, it was almost sold out on the store shelves. Excellent bang for the buck, but it tastes slightly different compared to 7 or 6 years ago when I first bought it when it had the longer neck bottle design with the metal break off cap. I like the new plastic cap they have now as it feels thicker and tighter than the thin metal one before but it probably doesn't make much of a difference in sealing or keeping the freshness of the flavour. Definitely need a warm bourbon whiskey like this to get through the long 9 months of winter here in Edmonton. I also drink it often with Coke, Dr. Pepper, or ginger ale when eating dinner.
@@WhiskyNeighbour I bought more expensive Bourbons like Bulleit Bourbon that pretty much tasted the same as Jim Beam Black. I want to try Knob Creek and Maker's Mark if it ever goes on sale. I think there's a lot of overpriced and overhyped Bourbons out there. What's your opinion on Woodford Reserve bourbon? Is it worth the much higher price?
@@WhiskyNeighbour They have 750ml KNOB Creek on sale this week for $39, and 750ml Buffalo Trace on sale for $30. I don't know if either of these are much better than Jim Beam Black especially considering JBB only cost me $25 a couple of weeks ago.
@@WhiskyNeighbour Would really like to try KNOB Creek but not at $39. Hoping that it might go for $30 a bottle some day like the Buffalo Trace just did.
Interesting to know about the Jim Beam Black is that it used to have an 8 year age statement (double aged), then it changed to a 6 year age statement (and triple aged mention) and now there’s no age statement. So we can assume it’s about 6 years old or close to.. anyways it looks like a good bourbon for the price and I’ve been wanting to try it! Cheers Jon and I enjoyed this review!
@@WhiskyNeighbour I just received a bottle of Knob Creek for my birthday (today) WITH the 9 year age statement. Guess I'll be drinking that for now, can't wait to taste it!
hi Jon, do you recommend getting the knob creek over the 101? for some reason I've never bought the KC but your recommendations have been good to me in the past
Ooo, now that is a tough call. If you asked me that 2 years ago, yes. I prefer the stronger cherry and integrated oak of KC. However this last year I have shifted and bought more WT101 then any other mid range boubon. So, I am not sure how to recommend one over the other. I will say thst Knob Creek deserves a chance, and if you have not had it, I recommend trying it.
@@pross6525 before I jump in, may I ask what market you are in? Province or state? It helps to know, then I can search out stores. So many bottles do not make it into many markets!

As a scotch drinker, I prefer the 101 over Knob Creek. Knob Creek is too woody for my taste. Great simple explanation as always. That's why I enjoy this channel alot
Love Knob Creek and have had a few bottles of the Repeal Batch when I want something lower proof to start the night. I'll look for the Black and see if it makes sense pricewise for a bottle. Also love WT101. Interestingly, I've had it the same night as Rare Breed and Russell's Reserve Single Barrel and I found their flavors all kind of melded and got lifted up to the better parts of the palate experience. Have you ever had that happen? I think it's because they're from the same distillery so it magnifies the distillery's profile.
I usually drink Bourbon naked. sometime try to mix it with green tea which I find it's very nice taste. last time I tried to mix it with lemon tea... and I don't know what happened, the lemon tea is sweet but not that sweet, after I mix them together and put there for around 10mins, it becomes very sweet... for people who want to try a mix, I suggest mix it with green tea but lemon tea.
Howdy Neighbour! I need to try this one. I find the white label quite undrinkable, but enjoy many Beam expressions, including budget options such as Bonded, Double-Barrel and Old Tub (to an extent). I’ve heard the black is quite good! The WT101 (a personal favourite) is a blend of 6, 8, and 12yr old bourbons (same as Rare Breed). Impressive value!
I might hold off on the black. It is better than white, but not different enough if white is undrinkable for you. I would suggest staying with Knob Creek or Bakers!
Whisky Neighbour thanks neighbour! I am hoping to relaunch the channel this month and may do a quick comparison of some of the Beam core line up. I’ll stick with the little sample-sized bottles! I love KC (especially SiB), but I still need to crack my Baker’s (old bottling). Wishing you and your family all the best!
I didn’t notice a huge difference from white label to this either. Jim Beam double oak is a better pour and the same price. Have you tried knob creek 12 year?
In my opinion the flavors leave a bit to be desired and because of that, the extra alcohol is very noticeable. But I can buy a bottle for around $16 or $17 before tax so for that price the quality is very good
Picked up the black label this weekend as it was on sale for $22.95....I mean come on for that price, why not! It is totally "fine" haha but for the price, can't go wrong!
Like you, Jon. I'd love to know what "extra aged" actually means. I've read online that it's at least 6 years, so your 5-8 year guess was spot on. I really do not like the white label, but I do like a lot of other Beam Products. I'm drinking Old Gran Dad 114 as I'm watching your review (another Beam product) and it's great. IDK if they sell it up your way or not, but it's definitely a good bargain at it's price.
I wish they did! I like OGD, but I can't get the 114 which everyone says is so much better. For me, I can almost get KC for the price of this so it will be hard for me to replace this bottle. Still, I did not mind it. I can notice the extra oak I think. Cheers!
RCLS has it on sale again for $23 Cdn this weekend, which is essentially the U.S. dollar price. Can't beat the value of Jim Beam Black, it tastes as good as a bourbon that costs quadruple the price.
Enjoyed the review Jon. I prefer the JB Black to the standard JB, but don't thinks it's as good as the Devil's Cut. The jury's out on the Doubled Oak! These are always on offer here, around £20 UKP so can't grumble. WT 101 on the other hand is head and shoulders above the JB and superb value for money - but as you say, that's one mans opinion 😉 Enjoy the rest of your weekend 🥃🥃
Sorry, I was just checking on my phone. I forgot you were from Saskatoon. I think that is a descent price. A few people suggested I should try Devil's Cut. Around here it is the same price. I can't say one way or another about that since I have not tried it.
Hi Jon, 101 is an awesome bourbon! I've been going through your videos looking for a review on McClelland's Islay single malt scotch! Curious if you did one or plan to?? Cheers! 🥃🥃
I have not brought a bottle of McClelland's home. I did have a sample in a store and enjoyed it, but not quite enough to bring it home. Do you enjoy that bottle? What other Islay Scotches do you enjoy?
@@WhiskyNeighbour No I haven't it's 45.95 I figured that seemed like a decent price! I'm the newbie you recommend highland Park 12 to , which I'm going pick up tomorrow!!! Highland Park 12 is 39.95 here, is that a decent price for this scotch?
@@TomSutts1969 Yes! Highland Park 12 will not be as weighty or smoky as that McClelland, but it is a much better dram IMO. More layers, and a great scotch. As always, just my opinion, but there is a little peat, a little sherry, and an nice malty scotch. I hope you enjoy it!
Oh yeah WT101 beats JB Black. I only had a small sample and liked it enough to purchase a full bottle. Luckily The Homeless have lots of places to find shelter here. Cheers Jon
The black is OK, just didn't grab me enough to want to keep around all the time. Thanks for letting me know people are OK your way. Up here, it's stupid cold. Honestly, death cold. If you are on the street and not brought into a shelter, likely you will not wake up. Hard.
for the price of 101 even in Canada at $40 it's very hard to buy anything else over WT 101...the flavor is just too good, I get a mouth quenching sensation that i don't get with any other bourbons. I've had bookers, blantons and really i'd buy a bunch of 101 before those again, plus the price of the high end bottles are just ridiculous now.
Interesting. What is it that puts you off now? I really like OF 1920, but the regular didn't seem to keep my interest. Not bad, but not great for the price around here. Russell's Reserve. I'm currently going into another bottle. I want to do a re-review soon. Thanks for sharing, cheers!
@@WhiskyNeighbour IMO it lost the depth it once had as a lot of standard whiskies have during the Boom. Evan Williams BIB is another. I've had to go way up in price just to equal the same experience.
Hi neighbour! I like your videos and I like Bourbon. Jim Beam Black is good, but Wild Turkey 101 ist better 😉 Greetings from Frankfurt / Germany.
It has been almost 30 years since I have been in your fine city. Thanks for dropping in, cheers and I hope you have a good New Year
@@WhiskyNeighbour Happy new year too! I never visited Canada. But maybe I should. One or two dram(s) together? 🥃🤔
@@l.r.8954 That would be awesome!
I like it !! but I am Beam fan !!
I am too, but this one wasn't quite enough for me. It rather spend a little more and go home with a bottle of KC.
@@WhiskyNeighbour oh heck yeah Knob creek for the win ! Still haven t got an Old tub yet ..
@@chrisb48907 I think you should try it. It really evolved into Peanut Brittle for me, but I liked it!
@@WhiskyNeighbour i like peanut brittle lol
Picked up a bottle for $19. Pretty darn good... The smell is misleading, it goes down very smooth.
Great price!
WT 101 is always on the shelf. That said, Rarebreed is also excellent and affordable. What do you think of that release?
@@WhiskyNeighbour Wish i had access to rare breed, if it ever comes here someday i will surely pick up a bottle!
$16.99 a bottle here in Maine
Wow! Great price 👍
i payed 35 dollars for a 1.75 l bottle great deal i purchased 2
Wow! that is a fantastic price! Cheers!
Black was my daily drinker 20 years ago. I can't drink it anymore. I drink much less in my fifties and drink Old Forester and Russell's Reserve now.
The Old Forester whisky row series and Russell's single barrels do the trick now...more $ equals me drinking less. Not a bad thing.
@@danielmcevoy976 lol! yes, I certainly will drink through this bottle at twice the rate of OF 1920!
Wild Turkey 101 Yes! Jim Beam Black not so much...
What about compared to Knob Creek?
@@WhiskyNeighbour That may depend on which knob Creek, but still generally WT 101...
@@foodquig fair. I need to find the KC 12. I hear good things.
Like this but find white label too harsh
I enjoy this more than white label too. Thanks for sharing, cheers!
