- Which is the worst whisky? Proper 12, Jonnie Walker Red, or Black Velvet?
All three of these whiskies are on my "Ignore it" list and often ridiculed on my channel as being some of the worst whiskies I've reviewed. Now I do a side by side comparisson to really tell which whisky is the worst, and which may get redemption!

Whenever I have Johnnie Walker red I feel that it has been aged in a Tire
Hahaha. Thats wonderful
And distilled in a tire
because you are a stooge of peer pressure popular opinion
@@ARCSTREAMS johnnie walker red definitely the snowflake's choice
you are way off as most say it's too strong and rough@@aidanzammit9810
Thanks for taking one for the team. Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Fun fact: Until the 1980s, every British sailor had a daily Grog ration. This was a cocktail made from rum, sugar, and water. Every sailor would get it everyday for close to 300 years. The British Navy has still not forgiven Thatcher for ending this practice.
who's thatcher? also grog sounds awesome.
@@finallife87 really ?
Is that where Lamb's Navy Rum came about also? Makes sense now. And it too, tastes terrible.
@krisverding3908 he was probably not old enough to even be watching this video with a question like that lol
Black Velvet the drink that Canada should be taken to The Hague in a court case for crimes against humanity...
I just woke my child up from laughing.
And war crimes.... Sending that as an export is an act of aggression!
Feel better drinking Black Velvet in my tea nightcap, taste just fine and cheap.
Did you watch until the very end? You won't want to miss it.
Let me know what your worst whisk(e)y story is! What other whiskies are worth doing a "Worst of" video like this?
Bells - I was bought a bottle in a strip club (at about £120) and told it was fantastic. I took a hesitant first sip and still cannot comprehend the production horrors that must have lead to that glass of distilled shame.
Proper 12 should be retailing at 12$! It has a weird nose as well, smells sweaty at times? Probably an added touch from Mr. McGregor eh? It is a disgrace to Irish Whiskey lovers.
Red Label: Remove the label and probably the sales will go down. It sells because its a Johnnie. Nothing bad in it, but then its nothing to care or bother as well! There are better blended ones in Scotch than Red Label. I always pick up a Teachers Highland cream when on a budget. Retails less than the price of a Red and in my opinion is better than most of the whiskies a tier above; JW Black for example!
Haha, 12 for $12!
I feel so proud of this channel; I've left my mark all these years later, lol.
Every time I see your avatar I laugh
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary CHEEEEEEEEEEEZITS
Ahhh orange soda!
No way is Johnnie Walker Red Label anywhere near the worst whisky you can get. There is alot worse in every supermarket on earth.
Absolutely 👍
i wouldn't touch a drop of JW red even if it was given for free!
Black Velvet was probably my biggest regret buying as a poor college student trying to save an easy buck
It was a staple of my younger years in Canada as seemingly every family cottage and parents liquor cabinet had a dusty bottle of BV and Lamb's Rum orphaned in the back that was in need of a new home. It says something about the quality of it that people were literally giving it away.
Years ago, I knew nothing about scotch and wanted to try it. I bought a bottle of JW Red. Let's just say it put me off scotch for a while.
Eric Young Same from me lol.
It is great with ice and Club Soda!!!
@@stevewalther2293 Yeah it is great when you can't taste it!! :D
My first was Cutty Sark. Didn't try Scotch for forty five years after that.
Thats so sad
The quality of Johnny Walker Red really depends on which batch you get. The quality has gone down in recent years due to a massive increase in demand. But (from my understanding) it was a decent budget sipping whisky until the mid 2000s.
Real all time garbage
Bullshit
Yeah. I'd love to find an unopened bottle from a long time ago.
The label alone on the Canadian is a no for me lol. Proper 12 I’ll never buy. But JW Red I don’t mind sippin on. Not my go to bottle but if it’s offered to me I won’t turn it away. Cheers Bill 🥃
Bill: Ugh... these are all awful.
Me, an intellectual: Blend them all
(edit) You absolute madman, taking three golden bullets for my entertainment
I'm glad I didn't let you down
HAHA! ... When I turned 21 (many moons ago) I went the the gun store and bought a box of 45auto pistol rounds- then to the liquor store and bought a bottle of Black Velvet both things requiring to be 21 at the time. If I remember right we mixed the Velvet with Coke 50/50 so we got drunk and shot pistols! Lots of people liked it for some reason, had to be because it was cheap.
Thanks for saving my curiosity of Proper12, I've kind of heard that.
Proper Twelve is aimed at the douche market, understandable its terrible.
Most of them were mediocre for sure
Hahaha! Nailed it.
Honestly. You can pass on them all
There was a long period where Cigars fell out of favor after WWI. The reason was that the Military decided that they would provide cigars, instead of cigarettes. The problem was that the cigars where terrible and impacted sales for years.
Never knew that
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary They thought they were doing them a favor, lol.
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary Cigars were the smoke of the wealthy and the Military throught it was a great idea -- Cigars have never really recovered because they mostly moved upstream and cigarettes became cheaper mass produced.
To me, the JWR finish tastes distinctively like cigarette butts. On a budget, give me Crown Royal, Famous Grouse, Grants. JWR is an abomination.
I had Grants recently it was ok, Teachers and Grouse too. Never tried JWR. Crown is fine it's like the smooth candy of Canadian whisky but Forty Creek Copper Pot and Lot 40 aren't that pricey either.
Lidl Irish Whiskey "Dungaldan"
Should be a crime against humanity, even with a mixer.
It's tasteless glass.
I would opt for tasteless over the things I just drank
If you think Dundalgan tastes bad, just wait untio you try their blended scotch, Queen Margot. Literally smells and tastes like rotten fruit and nail varnish.
@@glennhooper8867 Have tried both, both god awful.
@@johndcoffee632 I agree, although from my experience the Dundalgan is fairly drinkable in an Irish coffee. But that's about its ceiling.
The theory has been put forward that the people who produce Proper 12 reacted to the bad reviews and tried to improve it. Mixing or icing JW Red seems to cover the taste of the 'neutral grain spirits' that are blended therein. No comment on the Canadian. Cheers!
The bottle of proper twelve I got didn't have the sharpie smell that most initial reviews claimed it would, so you may be on to something there
Johnny Walker Red is a whiskey I can't stand at all, it tastes like concrete and tar. I haven't tried the others you reviewed, but now I know not to try them lol
I think Proper Twelve is a whiskey with an unstable or an inconsistent flavor profile for possibly two reasons which is that the recipe for the final product allows or rather is inherently producing a inconsistent favor range and that the production of the product uses a too diverse mix of distillery sources that can't match the desired profile from one production run to the next. I'm not going to judge that whiskey until it's got a few more years under its belt. That isn't the situation with the Black Velvet or Red Label whiskeys.
We could always replace waterboarding with these...😅😅 Nice job, Bill!!
I'm familiar with black velvet from my college days because it was the cheapest bottom shelf rot gut whiskey you could find. I have the proper twelve myself and I don't hate it, but I don't love it either. Johnny walker red is actually the only one I never tried. Likely that's because by the time I started into Scotch, I had enough money for a Glenlivet 15
I would suggest trying it just to see how far you've come... buy a tiny one though :)
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary Good call on the small bottle. My roommate is a mixed drink guy so I could always pawn it off on him too
Thats what i typically do with my bad stuff
This was one of the most amusing segments that you have done. It was like being 12 years old and having everyone smell and taste how bad the spoiled milk is. On the serious side, please keep some available and lower cost whiskies in your reviews. Although I have not been a whisky drinker for long, I keep some cheaper ones on hand because, well, they're cheaper, but also because they provide me with a good reference point. -- I am still laughing when I think of this video.
I feel like Johnnie Walker Red can be a bit divisive. I actually really enjoy Johnnie Walker Red. I think it is is a little overpriced, but for what it is I like it. I have not had Proper no 12 yet, but I between BV and JWR, I would say Black Velvet is the worst of this lineup.
I will add that I like Black Velvet over Canadian Club
Forget about it, JW Red Label is really good on the rocks, I don't care what is popular opinion between whisky enthusiasts.
I’m glad that you’re able to enjoy a whisky that’s so inexpensive. I definitely wish I had less expensive tastes!
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary It was a first whisky I ever tasted in my life, I was 4 years old lol😂 and I still remember the taste. Today I'm a whisky enthusiast, just like you, with love for scotch single malts and good bourbons but there are a times when I just don't care to bother with Glencairn glass and Ardbeg. Then I absolutely enjoy JW RL on the rocks and it's my favorite bottom shelf blended scotch whisky. Cheers! 👍
When I saw JW red label I knew this vid would be good 😅
You remind me of a bald version of Chuck from Better Call Saul, hilarious video! I didn't even feel the 18 minutes.
Thanks Tak. Great show
You don't get the purpose of the depression-era Canadian Whiskeys. You don't go blind drinking it. It does not have to taste good so that you don't drink too much of it before a battle. Do you realize how many battles were lost because the soldiers/sailors were hung-over (Think Fort Necessity ) It's about quantity, not quality as well. Black Velvet, Silk Tassel, Five Star, and even Golden Wedding were meant to be consumed in the back seat of a Chevy at a drive-in with plenty of Ice and Coke. At a wedding, you can serve 40 or people and not cry because Uncle Bob spilled his drink of Elija Craig, or Anti Fanny drowned her Single Malt with Coke and Ice then put her cigarette out in it. RELAX cheap whiskey is about sharing.
Found this trying to find if anyone else could actually confirm that Black Velvet (the second whiskey I've ever had) was really that bad.
I was not disappointed.
Proper tasted fine but to me the issue was its double the price of bushmills white and Jameson which are pretty similar.
Died laughing at your reactions 😂. You deserve some Booker's for your troubles. Cheers Bill and I hope you've recovered by now. 🥃
Mmm Bookers
"This is beyond bad." This describes so many things. Also good reason to never buy any of these offerings.
Hahaha! Had to stop at 10:00, when you said "This is disgusting!" That was hilarious! Thanks for your honesty. My old boss from years ago used to drink that rotgut Black Velvet, and he thought it was high society! Really enjoy your channel.
lmao I'm in SoCal and I bought black velvet at rite aid because it was the cheapest whiskey lmao
@@idrisabdulllah692 please tell me you've found something that you like that's different. 🤣 It's okay if you enjoy it, because remember "the best whiskey is the whiskey you like, the way you like to drink it", however there's hundreds of whiskeys out there that aren't much more, and taste a million times better
0:41 - I've used, and will continue to use, Red Label as a straight sipping Scotch ... so now I'm curious about how you'll rate 'em.
Black velvet has always been my go to whiskey. It's hot it gets the job done.
@Maester Gryphon straight right from the bottle.
@@rogercollins2653 😭😭😭
It's nasty i rather drink vodka
I can't and haven't ever been able to be snobby about alcohol with exception of Vladimir for liquor, Steele Reserve for beer/malt liquor and Franzia for wine. Steele reserve I straight out refuse to drink as it always gives me a long horrible hangover.
I see JW Red as something bars have on their shelves to fill space.
Agreed
I don't usually go cheaper than knob or woodford
Good decision
Black Velvet was a college drink, when we could only afford the cheapest but still wanted to get drunk. Maybe that's why it took me 30 years to start drinking whisky again.
lol
Definitely didn't help!
BV and coke!
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary And then there was Southern Comfort....shudder
Had a few bottles of Proper 12, seems to get slightly better as time goes on, each bottle is better than the previous 😅
it's literally minimum age Bushmills and it tastes like a hand sanitizer
If you like to pay double for an NAS whiskey please enjoy
Ahh Johnnie Walker Red. My first bottle that I bought at the age of 19 or so at Duty Free (Canada). It was $12, compared to $45 or at our local liquor store - I thought I scored the deal of the century. Funny, because I followed it up with a Dewars White Label on my next drive down the States... sure could pick 'em back then!! While I of course love a mind-blasting (haha) single malt, and am very fortunate to have many, and fortunate to have had the opportunity to have tasted many incredible whiskies well out of my buying ability (some really crazy stuff), I actually don't mind trying a blend from time to time and am often actually surprised with how good they can be. In just had one of those JW 5-pack minis and thoroughly enjoyed each one of them. I was pretty surprised. Were they flawless? No! But I found qualities in each one that I could appreciate. The major gripe was that most of them were 40% ABV. Sure would like them at 46%.
I'd personally LOVE to try every JW (even red) at 45%
I have many fond and foggy memories involving my younger years in Canada drinking Black Velvet (and Schenley OFC,Seagrams VO, Canadian Mist and of course Canadian Club).
These are all meant as mixers. If you pretend they are single malts yes you’ll find them bad. Pour some coke or ginger and ice into them. 🙄
Never pour a bottle down the drain. It's booze, never waste it.
I suppose I could start a fire with it
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary Picky picky. I had Black Velvet long ago, I survived. But yes, whisky can be lit up.
The water chaser after the Red Label says it all
This had me laughing a lot. Plus it was informative. Mission accomplished!
A perfect combination
Worst whisky I ever taste it was Haig white label, if you can imagine a mix of water, medicinal alcohol and gasoline that was Haig white label! Since then, I'm very cautious when I taste scotch whisky!
I've only tried JW Red of these three. However I tried the whole JW core range lineup blind, and the Black label was the only one I didn't like and thought it must be the Red. Really surprised me.
Thats funny. The Black to me has always been decent enough to be a daily sipper
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary I suppose that's the good thing about taste, it's personal and we'll never like all the same whiskies.
Fake caramel....that is the taste I was trying to find when describing Pendleton. I said it has one flavor and I could quite describe it. That is it. Thanks
Ten High
I've used it as a mixed and it works.
I would never drink it straight.
I used to drink a lot of Ten High. IIRC, it's a half whiskey half grain neutral spirit. It's what made me take the sour in sour mash literally, lol.
I enjoyed your review of these. Black Velvet was the one my dad would drink. I'd forgotten about that. I'm guessing it must have been cheap. He wasn't really a serious whiskey drinker - maybe that taste was why!
Love the jazz!! I’m surprised you didn’t spit the Black Velvet out. 😵
the font on black velvet is telling of its "quality"
at least in canada, that font is a dead giveaway, and is found on all sorts of low quality spirits with high quality sounding names
My father LOVES Black Velvet. Of course he drowns it with Diet Coke as well, which also tastes like hell. The two bad flavors must balance themselves out somehow, but I know I can't stand either.
Hah! You must rescue him.
I’ve had all three and yes Black Velvet is the absolute worst.
Black Velvet 750ml bottle = $9 US. What you do expect? But I guess you can spend $250 a bottle for Bushmills 21yr old, and still not that good.
Yea. The black velvet was a little out of its league... but any whiskey under $30 is on the same playing field imo
I have a bottle of Old Smuggler I'm unable to finish, it's awful, but not as bad as Johnnie Walker red tho lol
Dont think ive tried it before
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary I wanted to try something cheap, and that's exactly what I got! But I guess sometimes you have to taste something lousy to better appreciate the finer things ;)
I enjoyed watching this comparison. Thank you
I didn't taste the proper twelve but man drinking Black velvet and red label in the same time is very bad idea 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 why did you do this to your self not worth the pain 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Great video ❤❤💚 I loved it and laughed alot💚💚💚💚🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hah thanks Saleh... it was not one of my better decisions :)
Black Velvet - 1(best), Proper - 2, Red Label - 3(worst)
No way, I was searching for wolfburn aurora reviews and this video was a recommendation 😮... glad to see this video too
I havent tried the aurora, but I've had their original offering and it was pretty bad. I did a bracket style thing on Irish under $25 a while back and it was knocked out REALLY early
I bought Black Velvet on a whim for it's price point, being a broke ass and all... I drank it, but, it did turn my stomach the more I drank it... I went back to Bourbon. Though, I do adore all of Johnny Walker's Scotch
What is your favorite JW?
Black Velvet is the devil, this is a fact. Fun to see someone else do this for a change.
I'm game to drink bad whiskies with you anytime
Only had McGregor and Red Label, both shockingly bad, completely undrinkable in my opinion. There are so many bad cheap blends on the market and they actually give whisk(e)y a bad name. I really hate the standard Bushmills too.
Bushmills black bush is far better than the standard imo.
Yea the black bush is good
Havent tried P-12...JWR is trash...and I gotta laugh at the dumping of BV...this stuff is VERY GOOD. Smooth. I like it better than CC and Seagrams...I consider myself lucky to have a palate that isnt impressed by harshness and pepper notes in whiskies...saves me a bundle...but I also dont like cheap stuff for cheapness sake...I do appreciate a Glenlivet 12 and Jim Beam Black, etc...im the same with wine...when I hear snobs say, notes of black pepper, leather, etc...I know NOT to try that wine..I actually wanna know it came from grapes and not snobbily aged to ruin so someone can say it takes like shoe leather. Ive actually fooled my snobby friends by having them taste BV in a Woodford Reserve bottle and WR in the BV bottle...its FUNNY watching them get angry cuz they got played...same with a $25 bottle of nasty wine with a 98 rating in put in a $3 aldi WInking Owl wine bottle..people are so easily duped. The sad part is that most people will continue wasting their money cuz of brand name peer pressure instead of standing apart from the crowd
Canadian can not do a good whiskey 😅😅
Your reaction to the black Velvet is hilarious!
Hah! Im glad you enjoyed it
I totally agree with your reviews. I tasted the Red Label about 10 years ago, and the Proper Twelve about a year and a half ago. They are horrible! I will never taste the Black Velvet. Only because I trust you judgement, and respect my body. LOL!
Can I suggest you try the Bain's Cape Mountain Whiskey. It's South African. Cheers and I hope to hear from you.
I'd love to try it. I'll add it to my list!
I'm glad I haven't had anything this bad yet. I've had cheap bad whiskey at bars, just mixed though so I never noticed. And well before I started my whiskey exploration.
Could do this again with Seagrams whiskey. Classic terrible 'well whiskey' for a $3 whiskey in coke at a dive bar.
Wow... The infamous JW Red label is the BEST of the 3... that's some pretty bad company to be in...
For real Steve... crazy
You should do Which Expensive whiskey is worst? Or Not worth the price ???
Then I need to buy a lot of expensive whiskies! That takes money unfortunately
The Whiskey Dictionary to me expensive is 60$ 😢
Thats expensive for me too! :)
Red Label: No. Just no.
Black Label: I drink it only if I have pneumonia and feel delirious
Proper Twelve: Oh please! Give me Kilbeggan, goddammit!
P.S. Nice one, Dic. Don't have much of a terrible whisky story, but I remember back in 2016 I took some Red Label my Ma had bought and almost spit it out thinking "Oh my god, what is this watery shit?!?" After that I lost my faith to her tastes until she found a bottle of Vat 69 and bought it.
Regarding alcohol in a submarine, that was the whole point - you can have all the alcohol you want, as long as its this one that nobody wants to drink.
You should do another review of these but mix them with coke or tonic and a lime. That’s how these were meant to be consumed. Or just ripping them as shots in south philly with a PBR on the side for 2.75$ 😂
JWR is great with ice and club soda!!!
Absolutely spot on with your choice for bad whiskey… the after taste on johnny red is really terrible in my opinion. Can't understand why so many people in the world drink this stuff.. 🤔
I bought Black Velvet once and was thoroughly disappointed. There was truly nothing to it.
I wonder if the Proper Twelve is made with the heads and tails of Bushmills’ distillation process.
Does Red Label sell so well because bars use it as a default when people just order "Scotch" without being specific? Or if they order a cocktail that has whiskey in it and the customer does not specify? Because I don't usually even see if readily available in the local stores that I go to. They usually only have Black Label.
Long story short is forever ago Johnnie Walker shipped bottles of their red to every single country in the world so even countries that don't really drink much whiskey our consuming it
Is it just me or does Proper 12 have this strange taste of soap as soon as you take a sip. It hits me every time...just like hand soap.
Make sure you aren't running your glencairns through the dishwasher
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary hand washing here. Only the Proper 12 tastes like this to me.
It definitely has a taste to it
@@TheWhiskeyDictionary yeah definitely. I often just drink it straight out of the bottle and even taste it then. I personally don't think it's a terrible whiskey but it's definitely not wonderful. At its price point I'll grab Jameson Stout edition any day or Makers Mark. Much better for $30.
Lawless - American Bourbon Whiskey out of South Carolina. The worst I have ever had!
Thanks for the heads up on the Proper Twelve, I may have tried that but now I won't go out of my way.
The story gets worse... I purchased the bourbon thinking I was getting a good deal for $10 as it was regularly $40 but they had a lot of stock they were getting rid of. I wish I had never bought it and the stock they had on sale stayed unsold for months. Apparently everyone in town knew that was a bad deal but me. I have had the bottle for two years now and only pull it out to let people try my worst whiskey.
TacticalCanner I’ve learned the hard way as well to never buy whiskey on sale when it’s a quarter of the price off. Also South Carolina doesn’t have too many good distilleries… Better to choose something like Tennessee or Kentucky
Sour mash, as true Bourbon can only come from Kentucky.
Incorrect. At least not legally. Only requirement for Bourbon is that its 51% corn, New white oak barrels, and a couple other nuances. Nothing about geography
I drink ballantines and coke, I think it’s pretty good i wonder how the walker red compares
Red Label is actually the best cheap whisky in my opinion
Great to use as a mixer
It's fun seeing you taste crappy stuff for a change ! I laughed so much. But you're a trooper. 🙂
Thanks Gary! Glad you enjoyed it
Im starting a business with cocktails what "budget whisky could i use for scotch drinks that isnt JW red? Famous grouse? Dewarts? And for bournon Jim Bean white its ok ?
Dewer's is a decent budget blend. Perhaps Monkey Shoulder is a good blended scotch in that price range. Jim Beam's white label is top of the bottom shelf, it'll stand up to cocktails.

Buchanan's
ok id like to see you do a hiram walker special old rye whisky review

But the number one worsdt whiskey I have ever tasted is bells. It's like johhny red on steroids
Noted. Maybe another episode
Johnnie Walker Red Label isn't that bad. It's not great but it's still drinkable. I've never had Proper 12 so I can't say anything about it. As for Black Velvet, it actually *is* that bad. As a Canadian person, I can assure you we have much better whiskies if you know where to look.
I'm really surprised with how bad you think Proper Twelve is. I haven't had but I've seen other reviews where people say it's like a discount Jameson or Bushmills and that's it's not terrible. For you it looks like something you barely want to swallow. It's interesting how different people's pallets can be. Black Velvet is definitely awful. It's only for mixing it's gotta be.
