My mother taught me all these lessons back in the 1960's and also sent me to a class that one of the department store offered for 12-14 year old girls. I will never forget what was taught. The teacher included in the class what quality workmanship looked like and why it was better to have few well made clothes which last and can be styled together for many choices. Christine

YES. YES. YES. I am 70. I live in the UK for more than 20 years, but I was born in Russia, and, despite the Iron Curtain, we tried to catch every single word of fashion from France and follow the French style. I know all your rules and taught them to my daughter. Neve tired to say that you are amazing! Thank you.
Love your simple, direct and simplistic guidance. With all the marketing ads it’s hard to get to the core of my wardrobe style. I can now strategically clean my closet and build my wardrobe.
My mom always thought me to feel the fabrics and look how the sewings were made. She has a very refined style and good eye since forever. All you say reminds me of her.
It's something we need to teach our daughters. Fashion comes and goes, but I've had my own personal style since I started purchasing my own clothes ( thankyou mum )
I look at color first, then style, quality, etc. If it's not my color I move on--I look great in black, navy, grey and white anyway! I am a label reader. Plus my mother taught me not to do free advertising, another words, don't wear clothes with the designer's name or symbol showing. She believed it was not a classy look.
Neutral colors and simplicity lend themselves to an elegant look. I can't afford expensive pieces right now but I have noticed that even if I buy something inexpensive from h&m I can treat it like it is high quality in the way I care for it and it lasts a lot longer. I loved this video!
1) I want that lily silk blouse!! It is my favorite one! 2) I wish I had learned earlier to not care about what people say. I’ve always dressed on the side of Style and “dressy” and was constantly mocked for it and because of that I didn’t wear what I wanted because I didn’t want to be made fun of. I love all of your tips they are all very important! Yes to all five. I have a blush pink silk blouse similar to the one you’re wearing. Bought it in 1987 and wore it once again in 2012. Still in my closet.
My sweet maman was French (Québécois) and lived in rural Louisiana. She never left the house without wearing stockings, white gloves and matching shoes and handbag. I used to look up to her as a little girl and thought a movie star was holding my tiny hand! Never over done, never flashy. Always stylish, always put together. I guess it’s in the genes of the French.
I’ve been addicted to florals for ages but recently have been eliminating them from my wardrobe in favor of basic colors and more classics. I’ve been shopping more thoughtfully and replacing the “fast fashion” pieces in my wardrobe. And am getting far more compliments on my clothing.

Bonjour! What a wonderful video that emphasizes the Gestalt of dressing well rather than just describing the clothing itself. I remember watching a documentary hosted by Carla Bruni. The elegance of her simplicity was such a refreshing change from the women I view every day in the workforce where I live. Your advice reminds me so much of my mother, who had impeccable taste. I still have a navy blue Tregere coat with a stunning red silk lining that she presented to me as a gift when I was in my 20's: It's a work of art. I do so love the way the French ladies dress. (Similarly you can get away with cheap make up if the colour suits you perfectly.) I love your videos and I’ve really upgraded my style since discovering them! Best wishes, Janice.
Yes to style, classic, neutral colors, simple and quality. When I was 13, using my babysitting money, I purchased a knit pencil skirt and sleeveless round neck top. It was neutral green color with a small print. See I remember it fondly today. Thanks again for the great tips. Whenever I stray from these tips, I end up wearing the clothing a few times then giving away. What waste!!
I enjoy your videos so much! I have always worn quality classic style in neutral colors popped with scarves and jewelry. I don't consider it boring and I always feel appropriately dressed. Fun to know I'm a French chic girl💚
I have always had my own sense of style. I am 52 now and interestingly I get complimented all the time. Yesterday a woman approached me and said, “I love your unique style! The fact that you don’t care what people think just exudes off of you...your style is absolutely magical!” Those words were music to my ears! I was wearing a straw hat, a 50’s style green floral a-line dress and my pink Adidas Superstars. I spent the past two years thinking I had to be more chic and conservative as I age. Nope! I’m back to wearing what makes ME feel good! I spent two weeks in Paris last summer and wore beautiful dresses or skirt/t-shirt combos every day (again, with various colors of Adidas Superstars). I was approached in French in every store and when I said I was American, they all exclaimed that I LOOKED very French!😀
Thank you, Marie Anne. It all sounds so true to what I like. I loved it that you were taken to shops and taught these things as a young girl. Having these sound basis up her sleeve a young woman can build and develop her personal style. Sadly, nobody does it here. I did try and at the time thought my daughter didn't listen but now I can see some of it did sink in. 😀
My problem is finding the classic pieces that suit me when they are not in "fashion". I look better and prefer high waisted skirts and pants but for years I could not find any: everything was low waisted ( I am so happy now with the trend!). Same for jackets: I need short ones but very often also difficult to find or very dowdy looking!!! I used to wear a lot of navy blue but can't find much in that colour except for summer clothes (maybe because I moved to Canada?)So finding my style was easy but finding the right pieces of clothing is more difficult!!
Your advice is the same as my mother always said and I tried to instill these ideals in my children. It was a great reminder of the way I should dress. It’s easy to get caught up in the fashion end instead of style and classic. I work at a thrift shop right now so not all my clothes are the classic style that I would be buying if I didn’t get most of them where I work but your advice made me realize having a full closet isn’t the wisest decision. I can remove a lot of the items and I will look better and feel better about my wardrobe. So thanks for the reminder.

There are so many of us who love you and what you do, and the wonderful advice you provide, thank you!
Marie-Anne, first, your blouse is stunning and "classic." Oh this discussion brings back memories. The good? My grandmother worked in a clothing store and taught me to always check the seams (quality). The not-as-good? My mom having tons of colors and not simple. I've hit in the middle, with the majority of my "colors" being a soft pink or blue, with a few others on occasion. Not ready to go mostly neutral yet (or totally simple -- I love a feminine plaid). I love how you tie this together in a web!
All 5 are very important. My style is quality classic clothes. I look better in simple designs as I am petite. However I do use color. Enjoyed your vlog today. Thank you so much.
Style, classic, simplicity, color, quality. I’ve never bought anything simply because it had a designer’s name on it. But if I really like it enough to buy it, and it happens to have a designer label on it, oh well! 😄
What superb advice for all ages.
How much money and waste would be saved by following these tips.

Style definitely, thank you for sharing 💗
All of it. Makes perfect sense.
Style, classic, simplicity, color, quality. I’ve never bought anything simply because it had a designer’s name on it. But if I really like it enough to buy it, and it happens to have a designer label on it, oh well! 😄
and quality for sure, I touch and feel fabric all the time because I sew! love QUALITY!
