Take care of your nails, skin, and hair, be clean and wear the best fabric, you will look like someone who loves and spoils herself that's expensive and this is how to recognise lady of class. I love Marie and how genuine she is 😍❤️
I love this advice. I shop mainly at secondhand stores because it’s how I can get the best quality clothes on my budget. The items I seek out are classic pieces that I can wear for a long time and create lots of outfits with. One of the best compliments I ever received was from my best friend’s teenaged daughter. My friend told me that they were talking about me after I had left their house one day, and her daughter said, “Kimber always looks so elegant!” Best. Compliment. EVER! 😎
We all needed to hear this profound message that STYLE does equal EXPENSIVE...you cannot buy your way into class, deportment, elegance or presence.....EXPENSIVE is just that ...over priced items that you buy to drain your pocket book.....quality does not always come through expensive either.....well done Marie-Anne.....soooo delighted to listen to this video today...
@@MarieAnneLecoeur I've always wondered, Marie-Anne, is it true that French women only buy an item of clothing for which they have 'coup de coeur'? I read this eons ago somewhere, as an explanation as to why French women always look amazing. 😁
Thank you. Very well said. I think that in most European countries bragging about possessions and their price is seen as bad manners. I always get shocked by those type of videos because for me they could switch the title from “How to look expensive” to “How to look tacky” and it would be the same thing. You are so needed here on TH-cam! Thanks for doing such a great job and preaching about style! ❤️
Marie-Anne, when I saw the title of this video, I almost deleted it because I am not interested in looking expensive. I clicked on it though, and I was so relieved to find out that you have remained true to your message about classic simplicity. Always good advice that's worth repeating.
I could not agree more!....As an English women living in California I do stand out amongst the sea of athletic gear that all around me wear and am always getting comments about how stylish I am....the truth is that 80% of my wardrobe is from charity shops.I tend to wear little black dressses with ballerina flats and my signature is fishnet hosiery. I add a pop of color with maybe a red beads and flats or pink flats....always less is more.... Finding what is right for your shape is also the key... I have been following you for a long time and I keep on telling women about your videos....I cannot bear all the yoga pants and leggings I see on all women even my age.... Keep up the good work!!!....you have my love and support... 💜
I stood behind a woman today who had every designer label on display and actually looked cheap. I think real style is the ability to put yourself together in a effortlessly simple way. If you own pieces that you have worn for more than 15 years and nobody knows then you are stylish.
Hi Marie-Anne, wealth has always been a beauty ideal. When people are poor, curvy women with a little more body fat are seen as desirable. When the high class people where working inside and the low class outside, pale skin was a beauty ideal. When the rich people could afford travelling south, it was being tan. So I do not even blame the label hunters, even if I think they got it wrong. I have seen some videos on how to look "expensive" and the stylists I trust usually advise to take understated quality pieces and curate an outfit around one key piece. Might be a piece of clothing or accessory
Oh, yes, Marie-Anne. Very well said. I couldn't agree with you more. The desire to appear wealthy derives from a spirit of competition, and falseness, and from being afraid of not fitting in. It has nothing to do with style, and individuality. Expensive brands do not make us "impressive". For that we have to rely on our own style, and on our confidence in ourselves. Merci beaucoup for another excellent video. :)
Completely agree, Brett Nine, I have said and thought the exact same thing about a vulgar person I had the misfortune of being acquainted with through a mutual friend who fits exactly into the category you described above!
Shallow people will always be attracted to shallow ideas and concepts! People with depth are attracted to things that have meaning that goes beyond and above the mere crass concept of money!
Marie-Anne, 100% agree with your point of view! I would like to see videos with an outfit that you put together for different occasions and explain it - including jewelry, makeup, perfume. That would be a great way to visually understand what would be too much, too little, and just right. Love your channel!
I've always refused to be a walking billboard for any fashion line . Screams insecurity . Many just don't know any better I guess . Keep up this useful message Marie-Anne !
Oh my goodness- I couldn’t agree more! Here in the United States women of all ages follow ( dare I say even worship?) celebrities and will go into debt to emulate them. Luxury brands with their garish logos (because if one buys a Gucci belt everybody must know) are so popular....it seems somewhat silly to me. Mind you, I invest in good quality shoes and clothing that will last, but I could care less what Kim Kardashian is wearing! 👗👒👜
Marie-Anne, honestly, it’s one of the downfalls of so many American women. It’s so important and all-encompassing for them to look rich. Too much value is placed on looking like you have money. It’s LABELS, LABELS, LABELS here. Funny thing is, people spend so much money on designer items to look rich, but they still go out looking messy. This is the reason the French look so effortlessly classy. It looks cheap trying to look rich, and the French don’t do that. Great video, my friend. Xx💖
Marie-Anne Lecoeur and I’m glad you do just that...and so eloquently and with such charm and grace. You get the point across so well without making anyone feel bad. It’s really a talent. 💖
Thank you, thank you from America!! I am 48 years old and adore French Chic. I stumbled across your videos a while back, and realized that this is something I am very interested in--- from my outfits, to make-up, to my closet, and the rest of my home- your tips and advice are exactly what I want to achieve the lifestyle I want. I was a bit surprised when I saw the title of today's video-- it didn't sound like something you would promote- I'm so pleased to hear your views about the topic and that you were true to your character. I believe the thoughts in this video gave your style even more class (if that's possible), and confirmed how much I love it! ❤️
Great advice to focus on looking YOUR best, not trying to copy a celebrity. But then again, look at Christine Lagarde -- usually in Chanel, and looking 1) age appropriate, 2) stylish, 3) tasteful, 4) wealthy. Of course, she is not faking it! I don't think there's anything wrong with wearing expensive shoes, jewelry, accessories, clothing etc. when you can afford it and if you genuinely love the item. The trap is when people pile it on, wear something that doesn't suit them because it's "designer" and let their clothes wear them, instead of the other way around.
Ah Marie-Anne, that is an interesting topic: quality vs "recognizability". And there is going to be a difference in look, drape, comfort etc. between a silk blouse and one made of a synthetic. BIg logos? Jamais chic!
Bonjour, Marie - Anne, I too, couldn't agree more with your message. We didn't have alot of money when I was growing up, but when it came to my mother getting dressed for work or any occasion, she had a way of making any outfit she put together just right....it was always perfect to me. Even as a little girl, I loved watching her getting ready.....whatever she chose to put together, down to her earrings, scarf or pin, showed a special style all her own, and that even as young as I was, I knew and could appreciate. She had a special flair or talent for always looking so special....she had, like ma grandmere, that special french, je ne sais quoi ! Even as an adult, as I would be packing for week long business trips and meetings, I would always love it if she was visiting because she would be there and give me her ideas.... we'd often agree, and come up with the same ideas, but I had a good teacher, and sometimes I had my own style ideas too ;)
Marie-Anne.......I forgot....when ma mere and I would go to the beach, we would be on the blanket and late in the season, The NY Times would come out with their Fall Fashion Magazine. It was our favorite season for clothes for the year! Even though what they showed was extremely expensive.....we would go through the pages and each one of us would pick out which outfit we individually liked the best on each page...(Mon Dieux!), or, we would critique them and sort of mix and match outfits we didn't think were that special and how we would each change them. The NYT Fall Magazine Edtion was soooooo thick, it would last us a couple of weekends at the beach....and by September, it was fairly battered and sandy!! Those were the days, .....I miss her so much still, and missed out on playing that "game" with ma grandmere as she died young. I so missed out on not having a teenaged and even young adult relationship with her....it is one of my great regrets in life :(
A penetrating analysis of an age old problem: the drive for wealth, status, and power. For women, society has tended to focus on their bodies, their looks, and how they dress. For men, it has tended to be their job, position, title. I love your reality check Marie-Anne. You really hit the nail on the head with this latest video. Looking stylish while being true to ourselves is appropriate and good. The outside should express the inside, what is in the heart. You are correct that trying to look expensive is vulgar. Who is being pleased by this? Is it an expression of greed that is satisfied, or a deep inadequacy about who we are that we must hide from the world? This is a philosophical issue you have raised about the nature of what is good. You had me laughing my head off at all the silly videos on how to look expensive. What is good? What is beautiful? What is ethical? These are all questions the Greeks raised. They are interwoven, and must not be separated. Thank you so much for this timely discussion! (Please continue to offer critique in your videos, we need your voice, passion, and thoughtfulness to be heard.)
You are absolutely right - style doesn't cost so much ! I see in US women who are very rich but dressed so tasteless . They show off their wealth in all various ways - from driving the fancy car to wearing heavy duty jewelry even with casual wear ...
Ivettie I assure you, here in London it is the same thing. Rich people wear labels. Everyone else blends into the woodwork. It is dull and depressing on the tube, bus or train. Everyone looks dull, boring and banal. Zero style or individuality apart from some Italian woman. French women have an innate sense of what is chic, tasteful and create their OWN style. The essence of French style is being uniquely oneself!😍
And they are proud of those views thinking how much they've helped people! Materialistic values are everywhere and I'm happy you've titled your video so that everyone will watch and learn some real values
You are fabulous! Being you is so miss understood! Our culture here in America is so much about this!! Many people do not have the money for luxury handbags, shoes etc. Yet, many videos promote such thinking... True Art is about the real artist! Fashion, style reflects this also! Merci! XO
My mother had a lovely phrase about a woman who dressed well, with discreet sophistication, on a budget: " she could make bread and water look good" As you say, Marie-Anne, less is more. Your videos are a wonderful tonic during Lockdown, thank you so much.
I recently finished a course where we were advised to find our "Fashion Icon" from among the rich and famous and I recall saying, what good will that do for me, I am not going to be on the red carpet anytime soon and I'm not rich enough to mimic their style, and personally in their day to day they don't look very well put-together. I prefer to dress the way you discussed here Marie-Anne. As my mother modeled to me and advised me. I went through a period where I tried on different styles of clothing after watching you tube clips or Dressing Your Truth, which I found none of were my truth anyway, and I would catch myself in windows or mirrors and think "that's not me" it didn't feel easy or right. No, I prefer now to dress in a way that feels right, its so much easier to be yourself. I don't have to worry about wearing labels and logos, because I cant afford them (laugh) and I have always wondered why a handbag this is plastic but is covered from top to bottom in someone else's initials is so sought after??? Why would I want to advertise for them, they're rich enough already. I recently watched a film called Yves St Laurent and I was shocked and saddened by his life story and his apparel which was anything but elegant. It started out elegant and became vulgar. I don't know why he was so applauded. So let the rich have their diamonds and furs. It didn't do Liz Taylor any good, her life story was so very sad too.
@Mariah F. I love the Dressing Your Truth series - I always wondered why I didn’t look or feel right in Boho, no matter how many times I tried different things - it looks good on SO many people, but on me it looks sloppy and like I’m trying too hard. As much as I wanted to wear pastels and soft colors (type 2), they washed me out. I used to dress in type 1 colors (pretty much defined the 80’s) but I’m the opposite of type 1 energy. Figuring out I’m type 4 was so refreshing - no more trying to make pastel floral patterns, flowy lace, and muted colors look good on me. It’s funny because I’ve been drawn to stripes, polka dots, and clean lines all my life - if I hold up a striped shirt or sweater and the lines aren’t even around the neck (for example) I will look for one that is perfect or I pass. My eye goes right to the flaw and lopsided bugs me. If I go by the “rules”, I should be wearing light colors, low contrast, but I’m not drawn to them. That serious makes me wish everyone knew about it. It’s a lot easier to shop for clothing when you can rule out 75% of what’s on the rack. What type are you?
Love this video! This reminds me of what my mother taught me growing up (she studied clothing technology): clothes and accessories need not be expensive or to have conspicuous logos for one to be well-dressed. What matters more is they are of good quality and they suit the person wearing them.
Great topic. “French woman do not wear Chanel” was a great video; going through the comments was fun. This new topic will bring others insights as well .
I was so taken aback once when a colleague reached over to look at the tag of the top that I was wearing. It is now a habit for me to remove tags whenever i purchase something new.
Giorno Giovanna Ah, you made me remember when a client reached out and felt a sting of pearls I was wearing...and asking if they were real. I was speechless!
@@nbks6w8 yes i have experienced similar , even as far as feeling the fabric i'm wearing ..so vulgar .... i have all i can do to pop them in the mouth !...lol
@@nbks6w8 lol. were they? Was this a rich person? I bet they were trying to see if you are rich or faking it? It could also be that they admired them and wondered why they spent a boat load on their pearls.
fabulous life Trying to call out another person for faking it is even more tasteless than the person faking it in my book. People should keep their hands to themselves.
I think that many people think that if it is expensive that it is stylish. They don’t understand what style is. Hopefully some will be fortunate to see you wonderful videos and find out what their style is. I was taught that we teach by example, so keep up the good work everyone.
suzie mills I visited an old friend who has been sick for the past 25 years and 2 years ago was diagnosed with MS ! I totally agree with you that the best style is to look healthy!
suzie mills - hoping you are still well! There is a beauty that only good health can bring, and a beauty that only a loving attitude can bring… Be blessed with both!
Touché. You know you're looking your best authentic self when you receive the compliment, not the clothes. "You look beautiful" resonates better than "I love that dress" - it says they're seeing you in totality. A radiant smile and confidence complete any look and radiates incomparable style and class. Ciao.😀
Marie -Anne, you are so right!! Looking expensive does not mean looking stylish and classy!! True class is subtle , not flashy or boastful!! These very rich people who have closets of expensive and tacky clothes, multiple homes and cars are deeply insecure human beings!! My style icon is Audrey Hepburn and you, both of you ladies look simple , elegant , and understated witness minimal jewelry!! And both of you have warm radiant smiles😀👍
I do not even understand why someone's main aim is to look expensive. As you say that is not the same as being stylish. I also feel looking like that, and being covered in logos, will attract friends who are shallow and judgmental. I mostly buy my clothes from charity shops as I can find good quality clothes in a wider range of styles than in the shops. With the money saved, I can also pay to alter them to suit my figure better. I occasionally venture into Harvey Nichols to have a look at the designer clothes and I am genuinely surprised at how poorly made some of them are.
I agree. We need to dress for first, our silhouette, and then our color. I have purchased clothes at second hand stores that have given me many great looks, attracted many compliments, and above all else, given me joy to wear. If I like the outfit, I leave the house feeling confident, and have a good time. I recently dressed for a night out with friends to a high end restaurant. I kept it simple, but knew the outfit was well pulled together. As I entered the piazza in my village in Italy, a young lady man exclaimed, “you always look so beautiful “! Trust me, at 67 years of age, and 5 feet tall, I am far from a fashion model. But, that brings Marie Anne’s point home, we all have the capability to pull a cohesive look together, within a reasonable budget, and leave home knowing we look chic, and stylish. Thank you Gabriel for the lovely compliment.
HI Bonnie, I could not agree more. You know you are looking your best authentic self when you receive the compliment, not the clothes. "You look beautiful" resonates better than "I love that dress" - it says they are seeing you in totality. I recently received comliments when I was dressed in a simple well cut LBD and another time when I was wearing a blouse from a secondhand store. Ciao.😀
You are speaking my language! I choose to shop second hand clothes, no one would suspect it. I’m never impressed with my friend’s logo plastered items. I don’t feel the need to be anything but elegant, fresh, and well put together. My mother taught me these principles. Thank you for speaking to this Marie-Anne!
I love this message and format and you are looking so lovely in your white linen with the jacket draped. With my confidence and knowledge, encouraged by you, I have been able to purchase a few understated, fine quality pieces at the summer sales I would have overlooked in the past. I spent the same on two pieces that previous years I would have bought a half dozen mismatched pieces that would hang in my closet. Clothes that make me smile and feel good wearing them. I also loved learning more about France in your birthday gift video. How life there is expensive so quality is saved for. Less is more - and the enjoyment of quality. I cannot thank you enough for this advice that brings me such joy.
So true Marianne! My mother used to refer disparagingly to people who ‘cover themselves in other people’s initials’. So true! Understatement looks so much more refined. I couldn’t agree more! Love your channel and insights too. Thanks so much 😎
Wearing huge garish logos makes me feel like I am an advertisement billboard! Another thing that is vulgar are fake claw fingernails with multiple design or loud colors Yuch. But some ladies think that is classy and spend oodles of money. Bottom line: to each her own.
All I have to say is WOW! This could not have been stated more simply. I am loving what you said. I recently sold my LV bags because I was ready for a different experience. I noticed that women would often notice my bag before they noticed me and I want people to see me for the quality woman I am....and how I present myself...not the labels I’m wearing. I prefer no labels (nothing against those who do) and look for quality at all price ranges. I never understood those videos of how to look expensive because like you mentioned, it’s a facade and anyone who has any quality of intellect and not empty can see. 🌹 I also see it as a way for the industry to try to keep us in a state of discontentment and want more. 💕
And I usually tell my daughter that people who are actually wealthy vs “rich/expensive” and can afford designer for everyday wear prefer to spend their money on experiences and not “looking” expensive.
Bonjour Marie-Anne, I have watched celebrities on the red carpet and have often thought money can’t buy style! I keep thinking ‘simplicity’ when I choose clothes and then see if that style suits me and how I live. It is fun to practice putting outfits together when shopping online and honing skills. Thank you for advice which has stood the test of time.
My grandmother taught me to look for clothing and accessories that are made well from good material and fit well- and to take care each. Jewelry to be classic -pearl necklaces in all lengths, simple Silver, gold or diamond stud earrings, several statement pieces made include watches and bracelets or rings.
I think the focus on looking "expensive" in fashion mirrors the trend for "compliment getters" in perfume at the moment. For me discovering your style (in clothes or perfume) is an understanding of yourself, of art, and of culture. That is when it is exciting and thought provoking. Most people nowadays want conformity that helps them "level up". So happy when I come upon communities like this where it still is about creativity.
Marianne, I clicked on a few "How to look expensive" themed clips. I was expecting some hacks to be honest, but I was wrong. Everything actually WAS expensive. The shops I use were spoken of with disdain. Imagine how unworthy I could have felt as I embarked on my journey of re-inventing myself; if I hadn't found you first and found out that it is style that reigns supreme? On my shopping trip last week, I wore my white button-down shirt, my navy straight-cut trousers, a navy blazer, some large stud pearl earrings, a simple scarf, and my large burnt orange shoulder tote bag, all high street. I felt good, and I felt stylish. I remember leaving a comment to you a while ago where I complained that as a plus-size woman,I couldn't expect to carry off the French chic look. After having compliments lavished on me, ( following my reading of your book, devoted to plus size ladies), I stood happily corrected. ❤❤
Bonjour, Marie-Anne! I think you made a very good point about the videos promoting materialism. I used to be a person who loved logos on my clothes or purses. Now, i don’t care for logos on anything. I am more simple in my wants and needs. I am trying to look more stylish, but as a stay-at-home-mom, it’s hard. I also want quality clothes, but I am losing weight, so I don’t want to invest too much money into clothes. Could you do a video on being stylish as a mom who stays home and also how to stylish while losing weight? Thank you for all of your advice and tips!
Bonjour Marie-Anne, I agree with you completely. I have looked at many of those "how to look expensive videos" and I realised recently, from watching your channel and a couple of others (Audrey Coyne and School of Affluence) that when I was thinking 'expensive' I really meant 'stylish'. I don't think I would have realised this and made the very important distinction without your (plural) help, and this has been invaluable, priceless. I thought for many years that I would have to spend a lot of money on hair cuts and colour, nails, make-up, skin-care and potions, shoes, bags, clothes, jewellery - oh and lose 30kg of body fat - before I had a hope of looking expensive/stylish. From what you have shown me in less than 6 months, I am looking more stylish RIGHT NOW, from simply being the best version I can be, right now, following simple, effective guidelines; I got a good haircut and stopped worrying about the greys; I gently file and paint my own nails a very neutral colour a couple of times a week; I culled my wardrobe of tops, sending two huge bags of no-longer-suitable clothes to goodwill (I only wear black pants and black shoes, so they didn't need culling); I culled my costume jewellery by 90%, surprised at how cheap most of it looked, now that I was looking at everything with a fresh, clean attitude. Since doing all of this I have been asked a number of times if I have lost weight - I think what these nice, complimentary people are responding to is the fact that I simply look 'fresher' now - everything that I wear now has cleaner lines, fits properly, are more subtle in colour and simple in style, and that makes me look better than I have in years - and has cost me hardly anything. Marie-Anne, thank-you for changing my life.
You are right, Marie-Anne! "Looking expensive" is about ego and is fake - or, "tacky" as we say in the south! :) Style is about making your own statement and is genuine.
Wonderful video! I wish every American teenage girl could see this video, then maybe re-watch it every couple of years thereafter, to help them maintain a healthy perspective in our crazy, materialistic culture! I had to chuckle, reminded of the time many years ago when I lost my head and bought a very expensive designer handbag (on clearance sale) because it was so beautiful. I never like obvious designer logos, so I ended up carrying the bag backwards, to hide the name. 😂 Despite the deep discount, I felt foolish for having spent as much on it as I did!
Authenticity is the highest kite you can fly. So many people attach their self-worth to designer brands and are nothing when you strip them of their brand names. Thx dear for your wise words. You are a delight.
I couldn't agree more, Marie-Anne. My Grandfather was a tailor and my Granny used to saw too. I still treasure some of her clothes she made for herself. They taught me a lot about good quality fabrics and the importance of the 'less is more' so by now I have an eye for such things. Living under communist suppression, they never been wealthy, yet my Granny was always elegant in her humble way. And they definitely taught me that faking anything (e.g. looking expensive) just looks simply cheap.
hi i have always tried to dress as only buy classical clothes , i love blazers , well fitting trousers , white tee shirts , shift dresses , plain heel shoes in the same colour as flat loafers , jeans worn with blazers , my evening wear have lace sleeves being over 60 well over may i add , however i still enjoy wearing a heel shoe maybe not as high as when i was younger but a modest hight . but i am still willing to learn updates for my collection. my regards liz .
I love this video and advice! I think it really speaks to all ages and I definitely needed to hear this to keep me "on track" to look for items that add to my style and not some illusion of "this is expensive so I must have it to look important". Thank you! 🤗
Hi Marie Anne, thanks for a lovely video. In the States we are masters of conspicuous consumption. It is quite a challenge to adopt French ways to life in the U.S. However, I think it's worth the effort!
Bonjour Marie-Anne! I absolutely agree with your statements and I do see people trying too hard as sometimes an indication of being a little too interested in their own looks, or sadly not having enough confidence by just being their "natural you" and because of this, sadly sometimes projects a fake personality. Being dressed stylish and timeless and to be well kept, projects to me personally, confidence of how you see yourself. Thanks for your great insight (and humor at the end of your video! You have a beautiful personalty)
When I first saw your video notification on how to look expensive, I thought here we go again another video on trying to impress others with brand names I am so happy I opened it and you are so right. Why be a designer billboard advertising what you are wearing and how much it cost. For me it screams “look at me” ! A secure lady knows what looks great on her and the most expensive look is her priceless well groom style. She wears the clothes the clothes don’t wear her. You don’t need a lot money to acquire the traits of poise, Friendly, Kindness and grace these traits are priceless.
This was such a refreshing video to watch! I have not watched any of the “how to look expensive” videos as it not only didn’t appeal to me, but was very off-putting. I was curious about what you had to say, and am so glad I watched! Thank you!
Yes! Thank you, thank you thank you. Sometimes I feel so different than others, because I hold no regard for logos and show-off attire. I like understated elegance. If something has a logo on it, I steer clear of that item. My father once told me that if I wear something with a designer’s name on it, I should be paid for advertising for them. I agree. What I would love is to make my own clothing or have someone make clothes specifically for me. I’m taking up a simple sewing project now. We will see where that leads. My challenge is that I will not wear products made from animals, and I find it a challenge to find well made sustainable items. Cotton, linen, hemp, Tencel, and cork are some of the materials that I look for. If you have any advice on good clothing that is vegan and stylish, I would be interested in that information. For instance, how to find a nicely made vegan blazer. Another challenge is footwear. I hear that pineapple leaves are used for a leather-like product. I don’t want to break the bank, but I do want to spend wisely.
I think it's all about confidence. Because someone confident could walk down a street in a simple black dress and know she looks good. When you feel like this it instantly takes your whole look up a notch. Women need to be kinder to themselves and dress for how they want to and enjoy being feminine. And if women are unsure what really flatters them, go and ask advice from a personal shopper or watch more of your channel! x 😄
Great Information Marie-Anne! I just watched 'Roman Holiday" again the other day. After I watched it, I realized that the reason Audrey Hepburn became a style icon might have been because she definitely knew how to dress for her body type, etc. She knew what worked for her and she always looked so put together. In many ways she had a classic style, at least in my opinion. Thanks for all you do.
As your previous statement on style being timeless, the same applies to this subject. Wish this message would resonate with more of the female populace that I encounter in the US. Bravo, Marie-Anne for your excellent series!
I love this mindset. It seems to be the opposite here in the USA. ( at least the part I live in). I appreciate and enjoy these kind of videos. Please keep them coming
Marie Anne you nailed this! I see so many people, not only women, but also men who are so much into showing off their wealth to the point they become like walking billboards for fashion brands. They have no idea what their style may be nor have any interest in discovering it.They would rather pay an image consultant to tell them what to wear. And then, we have a cohort of people trying to emulate that , imitate that type of of behavior. Did you hear about “Fake it til you make it?” That philosophy is at the core of this “how to look expensive” craze with the hope that if one is going to wear an expensive handbag or shoe, will become rich. Now you tell me how silly that is! True style and class has become a hot commodity around here.
Ha ha, I’m not sure you would like to consult some of those people, who again, have no interest in polishing their style. All they want is to show off their wealth as loud as possible, aggressively in other people’s faces and since they pay you, you’ll need to satisfy their vanity. Some comments think that this type of behavior shows insecurity, but it’s actually the desire to show power, to crush and intimidate the others. So my friend, I’m afraid you’ll stick with us for now, your faithful followers, and do what you love to do. We appreciate you and we follow your advice.xo
Totally agree with you. Seeing someone trying to look “expensive “ never looks chic. I enjoy your videos always wanted to travel to France. Thank you for sharing.
One year later Marie-Anne, your message is still relevant. Being in the United States amid this raging pandemic, I've stayed true to myself and adhered to a capsule wardrobe.... more substance less waste.
Marie-Anne! I LOVE this video. I was waiting for the word "Vulgar" because my husband is always using that word to describe the way a great number of people dress and he has me doing it too! You are so spot on with this. I know people who are great clothing snobs when in actuality it is the labels that they covet and not the style. You speak the truth! XOXOXOXO
A much needed video on TH-cam! Such an affirmation of the individual! Being an individual and original is stylish. Taking pride in how we present ourselves is stylish. The only reason anyone would want to look "expensive" is to let others know they like money and want to say that they value money most in their lives. Some people want to look expensive because they think it will open doors for them to get into elite circles. I love what you said about what the world really needs - YOU - not another rich celebrity wannabe.
I noticed your beautiful posture which got me thinking about the importance of good posture & how it can make or break anyone's look. I love your posture! 👍🏽
I could not agree more with your statements Marie-Anne. It has become the norm to spend, spend spend with the idea if you buy these life changing products it will make you look chic and expensive all the while flashing a large gauche front and center. Oh how I loved your video and hope more will follow! Thank you so much Marie-Anne! ❤️
I wholeheartedly agree with you! I am not a fan of the trend of wearing all the logos neither. I do have a vintage LV petit bucket in monogram canvas but when I carry it, it’s the only logo you will see me wear. I did just acquire two vintage Hermès carrés and I am hooked! The quality is so good and I can see why they are so sought after. I am a high school French teacher and I was trying to explain BCBG to my students and they seemed to be on the same page. Trying too hard to look like you’re someone you’re not is in such poor taste!
I have chosen to look your video in spite of the title- because it is yours. And you deserved it. Now, that topic is clear to all of us. Now, we need a video : how to be stylish :-) french way
This is a wonderful and thoughtful message. I didn’t watch this when it first came out as I didn’t want to feed the “I must look expensive to be valued” message. Now after watching your video on the things French women never say about style, I thought I’d see what you had to say in this video. I was wrong! Thank you for putting this out there! “You will be found out!” Love it🥰
I agree completely with your comments. I’ve never worn designer labels. It has become increasingly difficult as I have aged to find classic well made clothes of good quality vs. the “trendy” items I’ve seen in the stores. I cannot afford to be expensive clothes and the less expensive clothes either are not a classic design or they are not good quality.
My friend told me that they were talking about me after I had left their house one day, and her daughter said, “Kimber always looks so elegant!”
Best. Compliment. EVER! 😎
This is so refreshing. You can always tell when someone is not their 'authentic' self. It takes so much more effort to be something you're not.
Money does not necessarily = class, but authenticity is always classy! What a great message.
And...this is why French women always look put together and authentic.
Insecurity is one of the motivations for wanting to look "expensive".
Bravo, Marie-Anne👏👏👏

Vulgar displays of wealth, so gauche! Love your esthetic, you nailed this topic. Thank you.
For sure, money can not buy class. Class and elegance is timeless and understated. Thank you for reminding us of this Marie-Anne.
I completely agree with you Marie-Anne, I find Italians have a similar mindset too.
they most certainly do .....lol
Shallow people will always be attracted to shallow ideas and concepts! People with depth are attracted to things that have meaning that goes beyond and above the mere crass concept of money!
I couldn’t have said it better myself. I’m going to save your comment as a quote because it’s so spot on.
Unfortunately shallow people are the majority...🤔
Those Kardashian ladies are the worst in terms of expensive but thoroughly trashy clothes!!

Xx💖
I agree, Lori Lyn: Funny thing is, people spend so much money on designer items to look rich, but they still go out looking messy.
Marie-Anne Lecoeur and I’m glad you do just that...and so eloquently and with such charm and grace. You get the point across so well without making anyone feel bad. It’s really a talent. 💖
Jazey Razey thanks, Jazey, it’s so true!

I love your message and your videos and couldn't agree with you more.
Bonjour, Marie - Anne,
I too, couldn't agree more with your message. We didn't have alot of money when I was growing up, but when it came to my mother getting dressed for work or any occasion,
she had a way of making any outfit
she put together just right....it was always perfect to me. Even as a little girl, I loved watching her getting ready.....whatever she chose to put together, down to her earrings, scarf or pin, showed a special style all her own, and that even as young as I was, I knew and could appreciate. She had a special flair or talent for always looking so special....she had, like ma grandmere, that special french,
je ne sais quoi ! Even as an adult, as I would be packing for week long business trips and meetings, I would always love it if she was visiting because she would be there and give me her ideas.... we'd often agree, and come up with the same ideas, but
I had a good teacher, and sometimes I had my own style ideas too ;)
Marie-Anne.......I forgot....when ma mere and I would go to the beach, we would be on the blanket and late in the season, The NY Times would come out with their Fall Fashion Magazine. Those were the days, .....I miss her so much still, and missed out on playing that "game" with ma grandmere as she
died young. I so missed out on not having a teenaged and even young adult relationship with her....it is one of my great regrets in life :(
I agree Marie Anne and yes I hate logos too
A penetrating analysis of an age old problem: the drive for wealth, status, and power.
Well said "Think of yourself as a wonderful, beautiful canvas. Make the most of what you have". So lovely!
😘
Excellent points! Grew up on the farm….learned fine sewing…..belonged to 4-H Love your thoughts.
I was speechless!

even as far as feeling the fabric i'm wearing ..so vulgar ....
i have all i can do to pop them in the mouth !...lol
@@nbks6w8 lol. were they? Was this a rich person? I bet they were trying to see if you are rich or faking it? It could also be that they admired them and wondered why they spent a boat load on their pearls.
fabulous life Trying to call out another person for faking it is even more tasteless than the person faking it in my book. People should keep their hands to themselves.
fabulous life LOL..yes, they are real pearls, a gift from my husband on our 25th wedding anniversary. Never would I consider doing that to anyone!

I think that many people think that if it is expensive that it is stylish. They don’t understand what style is. Hopefully some will be fortunate to see you wonderful videos and find out what their style is. I was taught that we teach by example, so keep up the good work everyone.
After being in hospital ......I just care about being healthy .

Touché. You know you're looking your best authentic self when you receive the compliment, not the clothes. "You look beautiful" resonates better than "I love that dress" - it says they're seeing you in totality. A radiant smile and confidence complete any look and radiates incomparable style and class. Ciao.😀
Good advice Marie-Anne and you're absolutely right, it's all about individuality.
One of your best videos so far, Marie-Anne! Cheers!
I occasionally venture into Harvey Nichols to have a look at the designer clothes and I am genuinely surprised at how poorly made some of them are.
sadly , they need some kind of validation from the outside....
Trust me, at 67 years of age, and 5 feet tall, I am far from a
fashion model.
Oh NEVER a label. Always have you whispering in my ear!🥰
I have to admit I got a little worried when I saw the title of this video, Marie-Anne 😂, but as always you are right on point. Xx
@@MarieAnneLecoeur I forgot to say I love the outtakes at the end...😁😂 Xx
Wen P I was worried too lol.
Just because one has money doesn’t mean they have class (though they could)
I agree with you. Wealth does not necessarily equate style, and aiming at that won’t help express true style.
Such a simple and beautiful way to make a point! Love your style 🥰
My grandmother taught me to look for clothing and accessories that are made well from good material and fit well- and to take care each. Jewelry to be classic -pearl necklaces in all lengths, simple
Silver, gold or diamond stud earrings, several statement pieces made include watches and bracelets or rings.
I agree 💯
Flashy clothes, too much makeup etc, look cheap, not chic 💋
PS, your out takes make me giggle 🤭 I love them 😍
I think the focus on looking "expensive" in fashion mirrors the trend for "compliment getters" in perfume at the moment.

Marie-Anne Lecoeur Merci!
Graceful. Elegant surely is what it's all about. Well groomed walk nicely speak nicely. All stylish chic X
One company that I worked at said that Friday was "dress down" day. But dress down did not mean shabby and NO logo shirts were allowed.
I adore this era...and I Love today's episode..😘 thanks Marie-Anne..

I love this video and advice! I think it really speaks to all ages and I definitely needed to hear this to keep me "on track" to look for items that add to my style and not some illusion of "this is expensive so I must have it to look important". Thank you! 🤗
I would love to find some vintage magazines like that!!
You are right about the expensive stuff. Style is better than brands. You talk so passion about this subject. Good job.

This is why I subscribe to you, Marie-Anne! Authentic and genuine - the world needs that from each of us. Thank you so much for this video.
@@MarieAnneLecoeur Of course! 😊
Please keep them coming
love your out takes :-) And your good sense.
XOXOXOXO
Thank you! I appreciate your checking on it!!!
I'm revisiting this video again and l truly love it!!!!! ☺️🌺
@@MarieAnneLecoeur ok!
You are so right! Style is not expensive.
Looking elegant has much to do with good posture. Slouching can erase even the most expensive outfit.
Marie-Anne, You are so genuine and that is what I love about you. I enjoyed your laughter at the end.! xo, Sue
