  • A look at the custom eCard format, also known as the eReader format, that includes only Expedition, Aquapolis, and Skyridge. It's a unique experience that any vintage player needs to try, and I'll tell you why.

    Welcome back, man. I had stopped playing by the time this set came out so I know almost nothing about it. Looking forward to finding out more.

    i remember entering the tcg game, it was when e-reader cards first got released, it was a weird time bec a lot of kids did not like some of the horrendous pokemon illustrations, it was like wotc didn't want to sell carde at all. so i settled for base-neo.
    fast forward 2 decades later and me and my friends still get together and play our base-neo decks just for the fun of it.

    I fell out of the TCG when e-Card debuted ~2002 because I also was not a major fan of the new style. I got back into things around 2004 and managed to secure an entire Skyridge set on eBay for surprisingly cheap! I was enamored with the artwork and the new trainers and lore and always wanted to use the cards, so I'm looking forward to seeing what they are capable of!

    One of my first e-Cards was Apricorn Maker (Skyridge) ... I still have it. I can't believe it'll be useful for deck building.
    This format is definitely interesting.

    It's so weird how the e-Cards seem to be so underpowered compared to what came before and what came after. Normally new sets usually get more powerful as time goes on (like with what's been happening for years with the current Pokemon TCG) or they get less powerful because the game's too chaotic as is, so it's weird to see them be less powerful, but then they get more powerful again right after. Kinda makes me wonder how a custom format would work, where cards from Base through e-Card would work, where the only limit is that you can only use Trainer cards from the e-Card sets. Sure, a lot of e-Card Pokemon would probably still not get used, but it'd be interesting to see how decks would be made with older cards having to work with more limited Trainers.

    • @shuckletcg
      @shuckletcg  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The WotC-20 Format has a pretty strong following and does a similar thing. I will be covering it a bit once I'm done with e-Card.

    Can you have a e card deck vs a base neo deck?

  • @SGD_ToysDownUnder
    @SGD_ToysDownUnder ปีที่แล้ว

    Never even owned e-Reader cards, dropped the game in Neo 2, picked it back up in Team Aqua v Team Magma, but Jason Klaczynski's blog made it sound like it's one of the better formats of the game by a pretty far margin. Sounds like it might be worth firing up the printer and making up some decks. Cards are pretty darn ugly though.

    I had completely moved on from pokemon cards by the time the e-cards had launched, plus when I saw them for the first time I was also turned off by their aesthetic. I do actually have quit a few of them but only because I saw boxsets of them bundled with base set era boosters at my local Kmart 15 years ago when I got my first job. At that time all pokemon cards were cheaper than dirt.

    • @shuckletcg
      @shuckletcg  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Back around 2013ish a Peddler's Mall in the town where I went to college had sealed starter decks for $9, packs for $3 each, and booster boxes for $100, all Base-Gym. Bought some starter decks for fun to play with the older cards. Kicking myself now for not buying everything they had. Pokèmon hadn't quite proven itself as the world's foremost IP yet, so cards really were dirt-cheap.

      I can also remember more recently, towards the end of the Sun/Moon block where Gamestop had ETBs for $15 because they couldn't get rid of them. Can only hope that we get another dead block of TCG collecting to weed out all the scalpers. My local game shops, Target, and Barnes&Noble all have STACKS of Charizard UPCs so the overprinting might be moving the market in that direction.
