    For further reading, check out this great FAQ on the e-Reader: gamefaqs.gamespot.com/ereader/915738-nintendo-e-reader/faqs/19490
    It's a very comprehensive look at the e-Reader content release outside of Japan, plus some info on the planned-but-never-released Game & Watch games we didn't have time to get to in the video!

      Hey man, I've been a huge fan of you and your channel for years now, I always have been a silent watcher of your content ever since early on during the Happy Video Game Nerd. Though there is something that I've been wondering for a while now, and I just would like some closure on. Do you ever see a "Starship Amazing" reunion? A new album, or some single. Ever since you guys announced that 20XX was going to be the band's final release for a while I've been waiting for any sign of a comeback. I still listen to Ya'll Stop Bloggin, Scoops, and Ruby Dagger practically daily and just kinda miss those good vibe sounds that you guys used to make. Anyways, I'll still always love ya!

    Oh man, I remember 12 year old me committing theft of that elusive EON Ticket from that Nintendo power issue from my local Blockbuster to THEN take it to my local Toys R Us where they had an e-reader gba on display which I THEN linked up to my gba SP (while trying not to get caught by the toys R Us employees) just to get Latios on my Sapphire version. If Nintendo was able to patch out glitches in games with the e-reader, that means that you should be able to use it to do arbitrary code injection in at least some games including Ruby/Sapphire as long as you figure out how to make the code in the dot matrix format! Actually, I wonder how they did that. I mean, how do you even change data in ROM to patch the bug. Well, yeah, you can save code on the saved memory, but how do you do that with another GBA thru a link cable? Does this mean they intentionally left an ACE exploit there. I wouldn't think they would go full on signing the code with a digital signature thing, though RSA had already been invented back then.

      If you watch a any% glitched speedrun of the original Pokemon games they literally change values in memory using an exploit called item underflow, I'm not sure if or how those changes would be saved. Pokemon games have relatively large storages for save data so it could have been stored in there with some special load flags. Most likely though the ROM wasn't truly read only and they somehow altered the memory (RAM) values (like a gameshark) to access the main storage. ROM and RAM as we tend to think of them are misnomers, Any solid state memory is actually RAM (Random Access Memory) but if it's used for permanent or semi-permanent storage is often called ROM (Read Only Memory). As I typed that I also remembered eePROM (electronically erasable Read Only Memory) which is normally read only but can be changed when an electrical current is supplied to one of the leads. Most game cartridges used mass produced components so the data that makes it a certain game is written to a common chip. In older cartridges you'd sometimes see games with special chips added to them but that practice is mostly gone now (can't remember if it was this channel or not but there was one DS game that had a bluetooth adapter built in and that's the newest example I've read about).

    There’s a reason you can’t save high scores: the emulator was made to run entirely in RAM without the eReader inserted, since it was written for Animal Crossing to download to your GBA without anything inserted into the cartridge slot. This is why you can remove the eReader entirely after starting an NES game and it will continue running fine. If it tried to save high-scores then it would have to maintain access to cartridge resources and would crash. You can actually abuse this to copy the same NES game from console to console and keep them until the batteries die (sleep *is* supported!). :)
    Though the eReader can save programs you scan into it, I’m pretty sure that none of those can read/write to storage on the eReader itself once executed. They can only access a resource library of fonts and sound effects and stuff built-in to the eReader’s ROM. That’s the reason you can’t actually put Doom on it. It’s not about fitting Doom onto cards, it’s about fitting Doom into RAM. When you load a saved eReader program it loads entirely into RAM. The reason native games look as rich as they do is because they can access resources from the eReader’s ROM, which contains a library of stuff like sound effects, fonts, shapes, etc. That’s also why they crash when you remove the eReader despite the saved code itself fitting entirely into RAM.
    Back to the NES games thing:
    Though it may seem that the games in the Classic NES Series GBA games were updated to properly save high scores, this is actually a dirty emulator hack that was really poorly implemented. It is basically a save state that auto-loads at boot and then resets your game. A save state is a total RAM dump that would normally save everything right down to your exact position in the game, even mid-jump, but auto-triggering an emulated Reset hides that.
    The original games very deliberately did not reinitialize all memory after a reset, usually so that they could temporarily preserve your high score that you were expected to lose when you powered off anyway, but that isn’t the only thing they fail to reinitialize. For example, if you beat Super Mario Bros the game gets harder. If you save your final score, it also saves that you beat the game. As a result, it stays stuck in hard mode and you’ll never see a Goomba again until you wipe your hi-score. After saving a hi-score and cycling power you can also use the continue trick (hold A and press Start) to pick up from the last world you played. I used this trick to jump straight to the minus world whenever I wanted. Of course, saving the hi-score could mess with that but it’s essentially broken anyway since you won’t want to save after beating the game.
    Also, notice that the updated emulator used with Classic NES Series GBA games no longer continue running when you remove the game pak. It needs access to storage on the cart for this function, so it crashes. There is a 2p function built into the emulator which will copy it in RAM to a second GBA but the second GBA will be extremely lagged so Nintendo downplayed this function, even going so far as to cover up parts of the boxes with little stickers where it is mentioned.
    I find it odd that you picked a Pokémon game to point it how unwieldy it is to require a second GBA. As you said, a huge part of that game is trading and battling between multiple handhelds, so it’s easier to find someone to arrange all that. It would have been much better to point out how cumbersome that would be for SMB3e.
    Yes, the GB Micro requires a link port adapter if you want to use those functions, but then you just say that it fits/works for the DS lite, which has no link port or adapter. It works just as well for the Micro without the link port adapter, and not every use of the eReader requires it (remember: original model didn’t even have that).
    It’s a little confusing to say that the eReader is “region-free” but the cards aren’t. In reality, it’s the GBA that’s region-free which allows a Japanese or North American-region eReader to work. The Japan or North American eReader is what enforces the region for whatever cards you swipe, so it’s definitely misleading to say that it’s “region-free” just because a region-less GBA will allow it to run.

    You can also print your own dotcodes if your printer is high enough resolution and you use paper that doesn't cause your ink to bleed too much. You can find dumps of the dotcodes from various cards, or package any NES ROM (that doesn't need saves and uses a mapper that the eReader's NES emulator supports) into a series of dotcodes. I remember having success with it using a Lexmark inkjet that came for free with a computer. I think it was 600 DPI and worked best printing them on photo paper.

      Nintendo. But I doubt, they would file a C&D for something unusable. The hardware isn't sold, so...
      Printing cards is easy with the right template, you would need good quality paper for those 1200 dpi prints though.

    I think you should make a Punching Weight video covering Sony's PocketStation. Kind of like Dreamcast's VMU. A unique handheld gaming memory card peripheral never released outside of Japan. Like a Tamagochi device allow you to play minigames downloaded from compatible PS1 games. You can unlock exclusive and powerful game-breaking items. International releases of compatible games removed this feature, but some games retained it like Final Fantasy VIII and it's not region locked.

    VPNs do literally nothing to help keep the ROMs you download safe...

  • @JazGalaxy
    @JazGalaxy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Having the e-reader keep high scores is actually a very big ask. Keep in mind, you’re swiping the code from the rom into memory with all those code swipes. The rom itself doesn’t know how to do anything it didn’t already do. You’re asking for a virtual battery to be programmed into the rom and then loaded onto the e-reader alongside the game files so it can write to a partition of the e-readers memory. That’s more programming to make each game, more cards for each game and a different hardware setup for the e-reader device... all go temporarily save high scores.
    Probably not worth it.

    Just to clarify, NordVPN isn't going to protect you from litigation in the first place. Yes it will hide you, but let's be honest, intellectual property owners are not going to come after people who download their IPs. They will come after the distributors instead. If you are considering buying NordVPN for the sole reason of hiding yourself as you download roms and stuff, then don't. They aren't going to come for you. Don't worry about it. If you look at the recent news regarding this, Nintendo went after LoveROMS. They were seeking control of their domain names (to shut down the service), the sources of where they got their ROMs, and monetary compensation for statutory damages and trademark violations. They didn't ask for who downloaded their ROMs from them. They simply don't care about that. Now if all the distributors disappear, I might start to worry, but until that happens, don't worry about it. Save some money, don't buy NordVPN just to protect yourself from piracy stuff. The only industry that ever goes after the end user/downloads are the folks in the porn industry.

      I've heard plenty of stories of people being threatened by their ISP for downloading torrents and ROMs. Threats to throttle speed or disconnect your service etc. VPNs are good if that's an issue for you.

    • @dhkatz_
      @dhkatz_ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      ISPs aren't the ones threatening, it's the production companies of movies and shows. When you torrent a movie or TV show, everyone can see the IP you are using to seed/leech. ISPs often join the torrenting just to get a list of all the IPs and then report them to ISPs. The ISPs don't care, they are just complying. Keep in mind, this only happens for movies and shows. Any other industry isn't really going to do anything.

    the weird way this thing slotted into the SP was actually a life-saver for me, my link cable was the model that didn't have rounded edges that would fit into the e-reader's cable port so I was able to use it in the regular port on the SP
    I don't remember using it very much though, I think it only got use playing DK Jr and activating my eon ticket, still got some of those berry cards sitting around somewhere

    I am disappoint in you not knowing that the actual best video game titles of all time are Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne - Featuring Dante of the Devil May Cry Series and Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner - Raidou Kazunoha vs. The Soulless Army.

    What's interesting is that Nintendo still sold new e-readers on their own store web site until sometime in 2013. I made sure to buy one in December 2012 to collect it.

    The track saving feature on the original version DOES work, it's just that it requires an accessory that was never released outside of Japan.

    I dunno Derek, the greatest game title to me is still Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late[st]. And yes, the [st] is not only a reference to "Super turbo" since this is a re-release of Under Night In-Birth Exe:Late, but also makes it the "latest" version. YA GET IT!? CUZ...CUZ...WHAT IF YOU MAKE A NEW VERSION CALLED LATE[ST](VER.2) AND- *Head explodes*

    Ah, yes, I remember standing outside my local EB Games at the mall with genuine excitement as they were opening to buy Donkey Kong for e-Reader the first day it was available. I was a SNES kid so the e-Reader was my first way to experience these NES games!
    Now, to go dig up that Eon Ticket that I never used...

    This was a great video! Did you know holographic versions of the pokemon cards with e reader strips did not actually work on the e reader? If you got a holo version of the card you would also need a nonholo version to use on the e reader

    As a Brit, I never had the chance to get anything e-reader related and have always had a weird fascination with it and often try to find info on it. This is one of the best sources, in video or writing, I have come across on the e-reader; great work Derek and Grace. I’ve been a fan since the HVGN days and it’s great to see your content is better than ever.
