  • Comic Book Mail Call & Market Report for Fantasy Quarterly #1, from Feb. 1978, the 1st appearance of ElfQuest, the masterwork of Wendi Pini! This book is historically very significant as an Independent creator-owned comic, as one of the first stories with a per-determined ending in a comic book format, and as a comic that was conceived, written, lettered, pencilled, inked, and colored by a female! And what pencils they are--and what characters she has created. Truly a gem that every serious comic book collector should have in their personal collection!
The Bear Market we are currently experiencing in all asset classes has created volatility in all asset classes as well and that means buying opportunities! I discuss the market conditions and fair market value of raw and slabbed copies of all of the variant covers available for this comic book and price points for acquiring key books for your personal collection in this comic book bear market of 2022.

You are one of the very few people I know who talks about Elfquest!! I remember owning the original publishing as a kid :) (I still remember the elf-orgy scene lol)

A very rare and undervalued book. Rarer than Cerebus 1, TMNT1, or Albedo 2.I have many of the elf quest issues warp graphics read and enjoyed most of them. I'm fortunate to secure a Fantasy Quarterly 1 CGC 9.6 at a low price.

Michael, i'm still buying this book! Was fortunate to score a nice high-grade raw for about $180, cleaned and pressed it, and it came back a 9.8! You can watch the reveal here: th-cam.com/video/9PByLdzyoFY/w-d-xo.html

Is there some sort of Elf Quest anything coming in the future?

I have this one as well as the other original-issue Warp Graphics editions of the others in the series (there were 21 I think?). I would love to sell them but have no idea how to go about it to get a fair price for them. They're probably mint - they've been bagged and in storage since I got them. This was a great video, thanks!

Lisa that is awesome, these are some great comics! One thing to be mindful of is whether or not you have first printings, as the early issues had many reprints. As far as selling them, like anything the more effort you put in the more you are likely to get out. Comic book shops have a lot of overhead and you will be a fraction (typically 10-25%) of the "list value" there. Peer-to-peer sales you have to do a lot more work and will also sell at a bit of a discount to "list value" and of course the selling platform is likely to take a cut. Also keep in mind condition is everything--if you are not an avid comic collector, the conditions may seem perfect to you but tiny flaws can reduce the value of comic books significantly. If you want to reach out to me on Instagram or Facebook you can send me some pictures and i will be happy to help you out.

A time-proven strategy, and one that is fun to implement as well! Good luck!

I love this book and I bought one off the stands when I was a lad. The abraded corners are common for this book and considered a manufacturing error, so even some 9.8 graded books have those corners. Good buy and great advice!

Thank you Daniel. I'm still buying this book, i just love it. I was able to find a high-grade raw for under $200 and cleaned and pressed it up to a 9.8! th-cam.com/video/9PByLdzyoFY/w-d-xo.html

It's been reprinted, by my count, about 6-7 times, not including trade paperbacks, etc. Printings 1-4 by Warp (4th was incomplete). Then by Marvel, then by Warp again with the wolf-head logo in upper left, then by Dark Horse. If you include fantasy quarterly #1, then 8 times maybe.

This came out about the time I started collecting comics. $1 was a lot for a comic back then (cover price was 35 cents for most books)

EQ is one of the Big 3 of indie comics, the other two being Cerebus and First Kingdom.

First print copies of the Warp edition #1 are harder to find than Fantasy Quarterly.

@@DrPaulKosnik I bought my current copy of FQ #1 from the Pinis themselves signed for $100. I paid that much for my first copy that I bought from Bud Plant in 1988. I sold it for $250.

@@DrPaulKosnik They closed down their ebay store in 2020. They do bring rarities on occasion to cons they can drive to, but think they’re sold out of FQ #1 now. They used to not charge for autographs, but started in 2021.

Everyone is sleeping on the 2nd appearance, Warp Elfquest #2, IMHO. I'd rather own that than Fantasy Quarterly #1. Much harder to aquire (1st print). Lots of 2nd & 3rd printings, but they are almost always VF- or worse condition. Richard Pini once said there were 10,000 copies printed of Elfquest #1, but i don't know if that includes 2nd and 3rd printings, but I bet it does, considering how rarely they show up on Ebay.

    • @DrPaulKosnik

All of the first print Elf Quest material is undervalued in my opinion!
