You can really see the duct tape that's holding the plot together.
I loved this movie as a kid - but even back then my biggest gripe was Raidens explanation of the plot:
Liu Kang: "I thought our victory in Mortal Kombat closed those portals".
Raiden: "What closes can also open, again".
Me:... "Wut?"
What opens can be closed but what closes cannot always be reopened. That explanation is similar to “why is everything floating?” “What goes down, must also go back up.”
It actually makes perfect sense. Its like your front door if it had no lock. Anyone CAN open it, its just against the law. It didnt magically become "locked" after they won the tournament. Shao Kahn just broke the law. He's basically guilty of breaking an entering. And none of the other other gods do anything about it because shao kahns daddy is basically the mayor of godville. He is one of the 4 elder gods, a ruling council preciding over gods and mortals, etc. And hes in on the plan bc hes a 'crooked politician' basically and hes always looking to expand their domain and power. The elders do jack squat since shao kahns daddy is on their council and the other gods really dont give a shit about earth and humans anyway or dont act like it. Not positive but im pretty sure the council fears daddy kahn, hes presumably the strongest.
But that’s the plot of MK. Shao Khan was pissed that they lost after winning so many tournaments that he decided to invade Earth Realm anyways. See, the elder gods had these rules where you had to win so many different tournaments in a row to invade another realm. After Guru killed the original Kung Lao, they were good to go until Lui Kang came around.
Basically, why not cheat. Why not say f it, I’m invading. What closed can be opened.

The hilarious part about Shao Kahn in Annihilation is that he went through an inversion of what the games had to do.
Shao Kahn's actor in the games was actually one of the shortest dudes on-set, so they had to scale him up. As a result, he looked more stocky and imposing.
FWIW: Gregory McKinney, the original actor who played Jax in Mortal Kombat (1995), had health problems during the casting call, who then passed in 1998...so they decided to recased him.

I saw this in the theater, and I remember distinctly remember that the whole theater was laughing at how bad it was. My friends and I were only 12 and we couldn't take it seriously.

In the original mortal kombat 2, Jax doesnt have his arm enhancements.
yeah that was a little odd. robot arms were the absolute pinnacle of the 90s but it was always explicit that they didn't come off, they were either attached into a shoulder socket or surgically implanted into your arms, depending on just what level of cybernetics this was

back then, the bionic enhancements were just cybernetic armor, not prosthetics like they are in the new MK continuity. you can even see in MK Deadly Alliance, how his arms are bare in his alternate outfit.

I remember seeing this in the theater and there was a group of kids that came in from a karate class with their instructor that looked like a character from the game. When the movie was about to start some jackass kids from my school broke in the exit door and came in. The giant karate instructor kicked them out and made them look like idiots. They were seriously about to try to fight this 30 year old karate guy as like 15 year old kids. This was right as the movie started which made the experience amazing! I was so amped up after that I loved the movie. After rewatching about 10 years later I realized how bad it actually was. Still love it and watch about once a year now.
...and to think all of this [love for the movie] wouldn't have been possible without the karate instructor ;P (positive memory association etc.)

Keep in mind I was like 15. No they never actually fought, but they of shoved the guy then he kind of grabbed all of them at once and took them outside. They just left and when he came back in he got a standing ovation from everyone. I thought it was amazing bc it was the asshole kids that picked on everyone.

The Mortal Kombat Annihilation soundtrack is one of the best compilation of techno rock. I still play it today.

I like to think Christopher Lambert didn't want to be Raiden in this sequel because of his experience with Highlander 2.
We actually thought the CGI was very cool and passable in the original film. It was mostly only done for Reptile, who was kind of an unusual character anyway and when he finally hopped into the body of a statue we were relieved to find out that he was not going to be just a perpetual lizard man throughout the movie. Also, Scorpion's stuff was brilliant.
The reptile scene was filmed after the main filming was done. Test audiences wanted more fights, so they brought back liu kang and filmed that scene. Thats why Cage disappears from it.
I understand how perfected the shows are but how sincere james and his friends seem are one of the reasons why i am and always will be a fan. Top work lads 👍

Back in the day I confused the two as well, the Arcade Mail Order was NOT for "Mortal Kombat: The Album" It was for a CD of the Video Game music by Dan Forden called "Mortal Kombat II: Music From The Arcade Game Soundtrack". The Mortal Kombat: The Album CD was just available at Music stores, and that is where the Mortal Kombat! Popular Theme song came from, the group was "The Immortals" And I believe it was sung by Oliver Adams.
I also know a lot about this movie as MK is my specialty, the reason why the effects suck so bad (honestly some are decent and some are god awefull ) is they did a test screening and the crowd loved it, so the studio told them to release it straight away, the director wanted to go back and make the effects better was not allowed to.

TotalMK Was there a specific reason they cut him out? It can't be because he didn't look good enough, considering how awful everything else looks.
I don't know much about why he was cut, probably just too many characters... I did know he did not speak English at all, he was Thai.

I have two fond memories of this movie.
-Saw it in theaters and when Sindel said her now-infamous line, somebody behind me laughed really loud right before she said the 2nd part and took my attention, so I never noticed it the 2nd part. So for a really long time, I thought her response to Katana's surprise was just "Too bad you!" and thought I just misheard it and the line was really "Too bad for you!" which is arguably a much better line than what it really was.
-When the PS2 came out I rented a huge plasma TV for the party, and it had the logo for this movie burned into the screen. A grim reminder.
Nobody points out Shao Kahn was the badguy from Cobra.

I mean, Kitana's weapons have been from MK2 the fans with blades that she uses to slice and dice people and that's like the only part that the movie got right, and that's where the dude decides to make a joke that falls flat.

I'm actually surprised that James didn't note that the actor who played Shao Khan was one of the punks in the original Terminator. I'm pretty sure Arnie inspired him bodybuild due to working with him too. Great video and sums up how I felt when I watched the film too!

The actor is Brian Thompson. He did a bunch of roles. I was introduced to him as the main alien bounty hunter in the X-Files. He's also been in the Orville as both an actor and a director. He does a mish-mash of different stuff. from acting to producing.

As a naive kid who didn't know better, I had the embarrassing past experience of seeing MK: Annihilation in the theaters and owning it on VHS as I was a huge MK fan at the time along with my cousins I grew up with. I loved it. I remember my mom being incredibly nauseous throughout seeing it in the theater, but continued to stay because she knew how much I loved it. It wasn't until years later when I re-watched Annihilation as a teen and adult why she felt the way she did. It's a visual disaster, and it's laughable and remarkable at the same time that a parent would sit through literally two hours of a turd pile for their kid. In retrospect, probably the only "redeeming quantities" of Annihilation are the soundtrack, Musetta Vander (Sindel), and Irina Pantavea (Jade). Neither one of these actresses could act their way out of hostage negotiation, but they were hot playing these characters.
same here, except i was in the theater with my Dad who didn't know better either and i never had the tape, but i caught the movie on TV a couple of times afterwards and realized how much it sucked. but i watched it just to make fun of it all.

This movie is one of the reasons I don't trust sequels! Brian Thompson was in everything back in the day, Dragonheart, Epoch, The X-Files, Buffy, Walker Texas Ranger, Star Trek, Charmed, Hercules, Chuck, 7 days, Baywatch, V.I.P., and Moon 44.

I remember seeing this movie in theatres when I was 10. It was possibly the worst movie I'd ever seen up to that point (pretty sure it was pre Batman and Robin). Shockingly bad and the example of why not to make a sequel.
