Rare High Grade Golden Age Comic: Unboxing, Review & Market Report!
I show off my new copy of All Star Comics #51 in CGC 7.5 Universal with Off-White to White Pages. It’s the February/March of 1950 issue, published in the Golden Age of comic books late in the post-war era near the end of the run. The JSA story is written by John Broome and illustrated by Art Peddy, who also drew the striking cover. With only 29 universal copies in the CGC Census, it is one of the rarest issues of All Star Comics for collectors of slabbed comics to chase.
In this video i review the history of the Justice Society of America and the Golden Age All Star Comics, discuss the historical significance of the series and review this comic book, its rarity, and its historical context.

Issue #57 also marked the final appearances in the Golden Age of Hawkman, The Atom, and Black Canary, in addition to Flash/GL/Mid-Nite. DC has announced an upcoming Justice Society volume of their new *DC Finest* TPBs, with the first release collecting Golden Age stories from the wartime period (as opposed to starting with All-Star #3). Such color trades may be appealing to those fans who don't own the Archives books. Thank you for the video, beautiful All-Star copy for your collection. ~~ Jim
@@A100-ND thanks for the info and kind wishes Jim!
That More Fun 73 was a bargain. Last 1.5 blue sold for 40k and 2.0 for 72k so I don’t think a complete unrestored will be under 30k if one even comes up for sale. The conservation seems reversible and what grade do you think it will land in a blue if done correctly? 2.5 3.0?
Whales who can afford a 50k, 500k, or million dollar book want something that's nearly perfect, and won't settle for anything but a Universal, and likely don't understand the difference between a Restored and a Conserved. Books under, say, 20k, are more accessible to the average collector who is also willing to live with more flaws and are likely more savvy to CGC's grading, understand the differences between Conserved and Restored, so these books are generally going to go for more. At least, that's my hypothesis.
Makes sense!
Earth prime was my home shop growing up in Burlington!!! I still visit occasionally.
Wow that must have been incredible!
It certainly was, it's still a top notch shop with some really nice books passing through there. The only real comic book shop in the state.@@DrPaulKosnik
@@DrPaulKosnikIt was certainly incredible. I bought a lot of books that were 15-20$ books that are now very valuable, most notably my TMNT #1 1st print that's a 9.8 also got my Hulk #181, I payed 150$ for that book in 1999, got it graded at a 6.0 Earth Prime gave me the education and there were so many good collectors that worked or hung out there, definitely got lucky to have such a good comic collecting culture, especially in such a small state.
Can you see the value of these going up a lot higher when the young avengers movies come out ?
Absolutely. They are assembling the team!
Dear Dr Paul, congrats on these books. Real beauties!
Thanks Professor! I think I was watching your latest video while you were watching mine. 🤣 Must be lunch break.
@@DrPaulKosnik 😂 you guessed it! I couldn’t watch last evening and was looking forward to it all day! You don’t disappoint with the history background! Really fascinating!!
Congratulations on this beautiful pick-up, Dr. Paul. And congratulations on your ascension to the top of the CGC Registry leaderboard for All-Star Comics.
@@pbales8951 thanks Paul! It’s been fun. And I’m not even half way done yet!
Very nice I wish you luck on your collecting goals. Dr Paul I have a quick question. Are archival tape considered as a restoration tool? I believe that regular tape is not factored as restoration but it does decrease the comic grade.
congrats , another cgc in your collection . i , myself , just picked up last week issue # 35 in raw . i grade harshly , so , i graded my 35 at a 5.5 with white pages . since it was raw , i paid $475 CDN , which is about $350 USD . to me , that's a wicked cheap price . as i've told you before , i prefer my books raw . i use an old 1995 yellow pages book , ( remember those ? ) it is super thick , over 900 pages . i open it to the center , and i place the book there , thereby reducing any chances of causing spine damage . that way i can look at my book , smell the pages , and enjoy some GA goodness !!!
Rick, that is great! I also very much enjoy raw books. The vast bulk of my collection is raw, but for my registry collection and for valuable keys i'm more comfortable having them slabbed to make them more liquid and easier to insure. Great pickup!
I wish they did more reprints of this era. Those DC archive books are expensive. And they never even finished Spectre’s run.
I have a search on eBay for the archives used. They come up about half off from time to time. It takes awhile to hunt them down, but then i enjoy that aspect of collecting!
Quoting myself from the comments here, "DC has announced an upcoming Justice Society volume of their new *DC Finest* TPBs, with the first release collecting Golden Age stories from the wartime period (as opposed to starting with All-Star #3)." So, their new color softcovers will include golden age; Plastic Man has also been announced.
What a beautiful cover. Those All Stars really stood out with how eclectic the subject matter seemed to be. I mainly collect Standard/Nedor books, with a focus on The Black Terror, and I also collect EC's Weird Fantasy and Weird Science titles. I also try to grab whatever budget L.B. Cole's I can afford. I'm a long way off from finishing any of these collections, but I'm trying to make up for lost time, having only gotten back into collecting right before the pandemic, which seems to be a common theme.
Thank you Jason! Those are some wonderful titles to collect and generally a bit more affordable than the more mainstream fare. Great fun to hunt! I have a few pre-code EC Weird Science and they are phenomenal reading.
Well, I wish I had seen this video a couple weeks ago! I did my first dry clean of a comic, which is 1982 Wolverine #1 limited series. I was working with a Mars eraser stick, and all went well until I tried to lift a little dirt from a red ink portion on the cover, and some ink was removed! So now there is a small and faint, but noticeable, light area. Sometimes it takes a mistake to really learn. After that I sent it off to CGC. Fortunately (I guess) it is not a very high grade book, due to some color breaking spine ticks, so I think the best I can hope for is a 7.0 anyway, even after they press it. If it had been a 9.8, that little mistake would have downgraded it, and cost me possibly $500! Isn't it amazing how little things like that matter? Anyway it is still a beautiful book, signed and remarqued by Joe Rubenstein. This is my first try sending anything out for grading. I also sent a modern book that needed nothing. Thanks for your videos!
@@davidparker1746 glad you enjoyed it David and good luck with your submission!
@@DrPaulKosnik Thank you.
One thing I did notice is the amount of pages in these older comics. Today's comics are nowhere near the amount. Sad but that is what we have ,I just love the artwork in all comics, that is what keeps me continuing to collect. ❤❤❤❤
Johnny honestly i love them all old and new, although i tend to only buy old stuff these days just because there is only so much time and space for collecting!

Did this book ever make it to cgc?
Yes! I expect to know the results any day. I think the hurricanes added about 15 working days or three week’s calendar time to their turn-around-times.
@@DrPaulKosnik Good. And what was the grade you predicted it would get?
Hi and congrats for the amazing job you are doing. What is the solvent you use?
Thank you! It depends on the tire of tape being removed, but Bestine is a good choice for most tape.
Thanks, another fine episode as always. Minor correction: in Flash Comics #3, the Hawkman story was drawn by his first artist, Dennis Neville, not Sheldon Moldoff. Moldoff's first Hawkman story appeared in the next issue (and he was still on the Cliff Cornwall feature as well).
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! Excellent correction, appreciate you setting setting the record straight.
At that point i. Comics they weremt cañled infinity stones. Eventually the complete set will be named as Infinity Gems.
Correct!
Hello. I have a question I can't find an answer for anywhere. I have Diabetes, which has made it very difficult to change pages on comics from the 90's since due to the slick paper. Remember finger tack from offices for flipping through paper stacks? Will that harm current comic ink? An aside joke from my youth. I discovered one day I had black marks all over me. It turned out to be the ink from a Cerebus trade paperback.😂
Doug, sorry to hear about your condition and that it makes enjoying comic books more difficult! I would be concerned about residue from finger tack and the long-term effects it may have on the paper. Have you tried finger cots? They should work and will be safe for the paper.
@@DrPaulKosnik I don't know what they are but I will find some. Thank you very much. Comics from before the 90's are no problem.

Jimmie Jaynes is the most underrated Legion of Super-Heroes artist of all time.
Interesting, I’m not familiar with his run but appreciate you pointing it out.
I bought this issue the day it came out as a kid. I still have it. Adrienne Palicki should stay Mockingbird in the MCU. Trivia, Mockingbird was originally called Huntress, but decided to not bug DC about it.
Agree-I thought her inclusion in Agents of SHIELD was a high point of the show! Would love to see more of her in the role.
This was one of the first Marvel Comics I ever bought. I say one of because I bought a bunch of Spider-Man comics from a quarter bin (Amazing, MTU, Marvel Tales) all at once circa 1982.
It was an amazing time to be collecting! I also started in 1982.
Prior to this purchase, I owned only Casper TV Showtime #5, which was the last issue: The Amazing Spider-Man #217 and #218 (I mistakenly thought that was The Thing on the cover) Marvel Tales #118, 128 Marvel Team-Up #73, 87, 95, 106, 112
So nobody can tell me I didn't read black or female superheroes from the moment I started reading comics.
@@scottandrewhutchins great memories Scott, thanks for sharing.
It's not Bobbi's first appearance, but her first appearance as Mockingbird. Her first appearance was in the Man-Thing story intended for Savage Tales #2 that appeared in Astonishing Tales #12. Prior to it being published, she appeared in several previous issues of Astonishing Tales. She also appeared in Marvel Super Action #1 and several subsequent Ka-Zar stories.
Thank you for the correction Scott--i knew about the earlier appearances and in fact have hunted them down. I intended to present this as her first appearance as Mockingbird--but if i misspoke at some point in the video i appreciate you setting the record straight!

Great content fellas. Love that planet comics. Great questions chosen for discussing. Totally agree the inexpensive shirt press works fine. Good find. certainly makes you wonder what else has been missed over the years.
For real!
Great find, but I doubt you were the only one to notice it, especially after 40 years. Not everything is on the internet.
Completely agree Charger! Happy to be proven wrong and find reference to it in an old fanzine or something...
Not to be “ that guy” lol, but as a long time fan of Bobbi Morse I’d like to establish her timeline in Marvel Comics. Her 1st appearance was in Astonishing Tales # 6 (1971) where she briefly appeared with psychic abilities that were never referenced again. There’s a LOT of convoluted storylines surrounding her in the next year: she is a scientist working on a new Super Soldier Serum, has a fiancé ( he is of course a double agent for A.I.M. 🙄, but not to worry, Bobbi is in reality a covert operative for SHIELD!),and has interactions with Man-Thing. In Astonishing Tales # 18 Bobbi takes on the identity of Agent 19 Of SHIELD, becoming Ka-Zar’s partner and lover while both operate out of New York City. In Marvel Super Action # 1 ( 1976) Bobbi adopts the costumed identity of The Huntress, operating as a SHIELD agent. Her next appearance was in Marvel Team Up # 95 ( 1980) with the new moniker of Mockingbird! During her appearance in Marvel Super Action and Marvel Team Up, DC Comics had created the popular character of The Huntress, hence the name change for Bobbi. Now…. as far as the license plate goes, great catch! I’ve always enjoyed when artists sneak a “naughty “ into their work 🤣 Apologies for my rant. Great content as always 👍
James, i love, love, love this rant! "That guy" is always welcome on my channel. I knew about her Bobbi Morse early appearances, and hunted them down a few years back. When i was putting the script for the video together, i briefly thought about including some of that background but thought i was already delving deeper than the casual viewer would enjoy and was concerned i'd put some folks to sleep and loose the point of the easter egg. If i misspoke and said first appearance of Bobbi Morse, i appreciate the correction--I should have said "first appearance of Bobbi Morse in her Mockingbird persona" of course! Thanks for the detailed comment my friend and glad you enjoyed the video.
@@DrPaulKosnik Thanks for taking no offense. Love your channel!
I loved Marvel Team Up. I enjoyed seeing/reading characters I didn’t know much about. They made a stinker now and then like the team up of Aunt May and Franklin Richards but they were good for the most part. The Claremont/Byrne run was my favorite.
Agree I really did enjoy this title although I only tended to pick up issues that feature either characters I already knew or was intrigued to learn about. Growing up I could only afford a few issues each month so had to be discerning with my picks!
The issue you are referring to is #137. It was part of Marvel’s “Assistant Editors’ Month" event and was intended to be goofy. But seeing as how Marvel never did another Assistant Editors’ Month, you can probably guess how poorly this event went over.
I read, Fijc213.
The Comics Code Authority just called--they want to offer you a job! 🤣
I can see what you’re saying, but it really only looks that way if you assume that a kindergartner wrote it in crayon. 🙂
i think your reading into something that isnt really there. its really hard to tell what that says on the plate.
@@erraticstatic70 I suppose every viewer should view it for themselves. I’d love to hear if there are others that think I’m reading something that isn’t there!
I believe it’s pretty clear that "FUQU" is spelled out on the license plate. It’s not just some random pencil/ink markings. As far as to who it was directed at, that can be up for debate - but those markings can not possibly be an accident.
IMO “F” “U” and second “U” are clear and intentional. “Q” seems half drawn, as if the author was scared of being caught while drawing it.
Great find!
@@jimgillespie6109 thanks Jim!
Never noticed that! You will find a similar (but more extensive) one in issue 18 of the 1966 Phantom series published by King Comic (a scene where he is reading the chronicles and it is possible to make out number of rude phrases)

I’m confused by what type of water I should use.. I live in the city, so that is out.. I shouldn’t use distilled. Di-ionized is quite expensive. So I should use spring water? Would boiled city water be the same as distilled? Much appreciation and thanks!
@@Taqi616b I'm not sure if this is helpful, but for us city folk, I think it's ok to still use distilled as long as it's in conjunction with a calcium hydroxide solution. I think the important thing is minimizing using distilled by itself, especially when cleaning a wrap.
@@Adrift. that makes sense.. thanks!
Water has many uses in conservation, so the answer to your question depends a bit on what you are using the water for. With respect to distilled water with Ca(OH) added, @adrift is exactly correct. Also bottled "drinking water" is fine (it's not chlorinated).
Why not boiled city water? That should remove chlorine, no?
Hate that I had to miss the live feed, but thank you again for answering some of my questions!! As usual, the show was highly informative. Love the work you all are doing!

I bought one of these at Goodwill for 6 dollars. Missing the regulator and the gasket. I had the regulator and the gasket cost about 10 dollars. I added copper pipe and fittings so it has a regulator and a steam gauge. I call it my steam punk pressure cooker. I've also built my own regulators and vent tubes with my lathe in my small machine shop.
Love this Lee! Thanks for sharing. 👍🏽
Do you have any insight on removing pen ink from the inside of a book? I recently purchased a copy of Foom #2 and it has some ink pen inside of it on one of the activities page.
The problem with removing ink is that, well, the comic book inks are generally chemically similar to inks used to sign books. So it's very difficult to remove ball point ink and leave the comic inks alone. If it happens to be on a white area, it's possible to lighten it up or possibly even remove it but in general the methods used to remove ink are going to do more damage to the comic than they are worth in my opinion. Sorry!
Way to apply your skills to this project! Always a treat to see you work
Thanks Dan! This was a bit off the path from my regular content but fun!
Hello Paul! What type of paper do you use for the pulp? Thanks!
Thanks for the question--i am actually not using paper at all, but native fibers! In the conservation literature, there are very strong arguments for not leaf casting with pulped paper (that is, recycled pulp) but rather using the original fibers that were used for the original paper. I plan to discuss this in some future videos, but i'm using natural fibers here. This sample was 90% by weight premium abaca and 10% flax. More to come on this subject, stay tuned!
@@DrPaulKosnik oh wow, awesome! 😎
Very interesting 🤔
Does the paper pulp in the jars need to be allocated in a dark area to prevent any yellowing?.Thanks again for the video ❤❤
Johnny, it might be a good idea. I don't think a lot of bleaching would happen under normal storage, but if you put it in direct sunlight you may see some photobleaching effect!
