I grew up around sewing and was hand stitching by 5 and doing my mother's hand finishing by 8, but developed a phobia of machines when I saw my mother sew through her finger when I was 5. Hand work was my comfort zone. I machine sewed a little over the years, but in fits and starts. In the last year, I've been overcoming that fear. I prayed about getting over it and feel like that prayer has been answered. :) Your videos have played a huge role in my progress! I've made a table runner, a little bag, (with your strap tutorial) several zippered bags with boxed bottoms, head bands... I found a great sewing community too. This and finding three wonderful vintage sewing machines has brought me so much joy this last year! I'm late to the party, but am hoping to get the pattern tomorrow. Thank you!
I just binge watched The Great British Sewing Bee which got me interested in garment making. I am a self taught sewist but nothing I ever made fit me properly. I have been quilting since the 70's so I do know my way around the sewing machine. I searched TH-cam for sewing instructions and found this. Now I will follow your tutorials. Thanks Vanessa.
I'm glad you started with Butterick to teach a pattern from. A good friend of mine is a professional seamstress and she says that Butterick has the best beginner patterns out there.
My lightbulb moment was when you showed the Butterick ease chart, and explained how to use it to choose a pattern size.!!! Thank you. Please don’t explain or apologize for your teaching style. You’re one of the best teachers on line, one of 3 that I will watch. I don’t write, complaining about nasal or whiney voices to other teachers...I just don’t watch their videos. People who don’t like your teaching style can not watch. Nuff said. All the good things people have said about this series and your attention to detail, I applaud. You’re the best.
I have been sewing for over 50 years but I believe everyone has something to offer. We all have our own techniques... I want to see yours. Maybe i'll learn something new!!!!
I can’t wait to make my first shirt. I made so many of your projects, including a Paw Patrol Lunch Sack. I use your tutorials for purses, pouches and more, but I never made any clothes. I’m truly excited.
I had a mean home-ec sewing teacher in 8th grade and she scared me off from garment sewing. Since you have successfully taught me to make quilts, bags, wallets and other fun projects in the Quilt Club, I am confident that you'll be able to help me get over my garment phobia. I have my pattern and my measuring tape and now I'll just need to find some fabric. I look forward so much to getting into a new realm of sewing. Thanks!! And please thank "Bea" for his awesome shipping - instantaneous as always.
Can't wait to go thru this series. I have yet to make a top that I've been willing to wear in public!! Really struggle finding tops I like, that fit well and are made with comfortable, washable, fabrics, in colors I like. Love the way you teach, Vanessa. This is going to be fun, I'm sure.
I'm not a newbie sewist, but am always in need of a refresher. I've been concentrating on pillows, baby blankets & kitchen stuff (hot pads, potholders from one of your previous videos), but need new, cute tops now. Excited to follow along!
I am so happy that you are going to do this type of sew along. I quilt, but I have never made clothing before. Thank you for sharing your expertise in sewing with us. I am going to go shopping for the pattern this weekend. You rock!!!
oh my gosh! I am so excited! I have made handbags and various home dec projects but garment sewing has always been a challenge for me. Finally, there is hope for me!!!
I’m excited for you to show us the mistakes that we as beginners make so we avoid them. I’m so looking forward to this because you teach up close and personal, and detailed. I appreciate the extra time you take in your videos to cover all aspects of creating.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you for doing this series. I don’t know the first thing about using patterns like this. I’m actually going to try it, just because you are teaching the class.
Wahoo! I found you! I had you on my TH-cam as just crafty Gemini...... but once I found you as “The Crafty Gemini” I found the videos..... boy am I glad! I’m looking forward to trying to make clothing one more time. I have make a lot of different things following your tutorials. I feel confident that you will help me through this! I haven't made clothes since my high school sewing class (1987 - gosh, I suddenly feel old). I would love to try this, so tomorrow I am off to the store! Thanks for inspiring me. Love your top!
I'm going to get the pattern. I'm looking forward to seeing how it all goes together. It is a beautiful top. I love the pattern you chose. Classic black and white.
I am excited to learn how to sew garments that actually fit. I am 5' and find it difficult to purchase clothing that fits my dimensions and size. Can't wait to get started!!
I am so excited for this!!!! I am a quilter and have been wanting to try apparel sewing but it's so confusing to me! I KNOW I can learn from you though!!! You are the BEST teacher!!!! Thank you!!!!
Love your videos!! I used to sew all of the time but got frustrated sewing and then it wouldn't fit. I ordered your measuring tape and signed up for the newsletter!! So EXCITED!!
Great new series! I hope I can sew-along! I am always stymied by the lines on the sewing machine and knowing which one to use for sewing garments. I get all frozen up somewhere in the process of making my own clothes, but want to join in on this for sure! Thanks! ...no more puckering necklines...here I come! =]
I am looking forward to the sewing along with you on this. I've tried a few times on garment sewing and failed. Your teaching is so clear I think I can do this. Thank you for all of your great teaching videos. I've learned a lot from you.
I'm not a new garment sewist but I know I'll get some amazing tips from you in this sew along. You are a fantastic teacher! I hope I can find the pattern! 💗
I see her online pattern is sold out. Check Joann's in your area. See my comment above about 2 patterns left in my area...33881 zip....if your near here.
I'm so excited! I'm new at apparel sewing and I have this gorgeous fabric that I think will be perfect for this pattern! I think the ease will help a lot. I also prefer 3/4 length sleeves, but I'm afraid this fabric will make them too tight. We'll see! Thank you for all your tutorials!!
Oh My Gosh!!!!!! You were in my head! I wear a 3x because I want them long enough and not tight. I will look at the measurement video. I am a true beginner and have failed and gave up. You've always been an amazing source of information, Amazon is already out of the pattern but I am going to go to some stores and look. First diy I will be able to follow along with for clothing, I know it will be fantastic! Yes, I will be making 10 of these shirts and iron on pictures and add-ons, I know it. Email subbed now and seriously can't wait! Hugs
Brilliant , I'm a beginner and that's what I want to do make a top for myself ,, this is just the thing for me ,, I'm so glad I found you on here,, I'm now going to see if I can get that pattern,, Thank You,,
Hi Vanessa - I really like the looks of this shirt. I too have a high waist and the length is perfect. Just like I want mine to be. So glad you are showing both how it’s done wrong and how it’s done right. I do a lot of crafty sewing but not garment. This is something I would like to make. Looking forward to this series. I love your teaching style. Thanks for doing this series! Sounds like a lot of fun. 💙💜💛💚🧡💖😍 PS - Reading patterns are a nightmare for me. I’m excited for you to teach us how to do this.
I can’t wait for this series. I got some really pretty rayon fabric about a month ago and have been wondering where I could find a pattern for a simple top to make with it. ❤️
I live in a small town in AZ. The fabric store sold out of this pattern the next day so I'm guessing a lot of people in AZ. watch your videos. So I'm hoping to get the pattern before you start.
I'm very interested in this sew along as I want to make myself simple pattern tops. The parts I'm most interested in is the seams finishing. I just bought a serger and I would like to get the right ways to finish my seams like 3 or 4 threads, the steps ( after sewing the complete garment or after each part) etc... Thanks to show us...you are a very good teacher!

I don’t need a sew along, but I highly recommend Miss Crafty G, she is an excellent teacher!
I'm glad you started with Butterick to teach a pattern from. A good friend of mine is a professional seamstress and she says that Butterick has the best beginner patterns out there.
You are a GREAT teacher first. Thank you for all of your valuable teachings!
My lightbulb moment was when you showed the Butterick ease chart, and explained how to use it to choose a pattern size.!!!
Thank you.

Thank you for starting from “the beginning, beginning.” I’ve had my sewing machine for three years but just took it out of the box this week.
Where have you been all my life! Love your tutorials!
I can’t wait to make my first shirt. I made so many of your projects, including a Paw Patrol Lunch Sack. I use your tutorials for purses, pouches and more, but I never made any clothes. I’m truly excited.
