Hello! It's 6 years later, and I'm just now watching this because I've started sewing again after a long break. Thanks for doing this series because I can refresh my knowledge as well as learn some new things. I like Vogue patterns for their style.
If I have a pattern that I plan on reusing a few times (kids clothes for example) after ironing the pattern flat, I will flip it over to the wrong side up and fuse a light cotton fusible interfacing to the tissue. This allows me to reuse the pattern, fold it, without worrying about rips. If you have a cotton shirt (or pants) that is form fitting and you are unsure of what size (multiple sizing) you might need on a pattern, you can lay the shirt or pants on top of the pattern piece and mark with a pencils for shoulder markings, waist, hem length, etc.
I am also very excited that you are coming out with videos on garment sewing. I made a lot of clothing 20 + years ago, but later became a quilter. I want to start sewing garments again and feel a little daunted by starting again. Your videos definitely make me feel more confident and excited about this process.-- I was also excited to hear about the independent designers. That's all new to me. Thank you for the information.
Thanks, Vanessa. It was interesting watching your video. It made me think how schools have changed in that when I was growing up all girls had to take sewing in junior high where we learned quite a bit of what you said. I did learn new things when you told us about the independent designers.
Hi Vanessa. Good video. Thanka for teaching. A couple of years ago I made the mistake of picking up a pattern based on the size I wear in store bought clothes. I was distraught especially since the sewing was good and the dress I think came out cute. I pushed me back some but since I have learned better. Right now Simplicity and Butterick have been really good for fitting me. I hope with yours and the help of these other lovely ladies in the sewing-sphere that I will get better at adjusting for my body (& my sisters who insist that I can and should sew for them also. 😊) sharing is caring so it is going out into the world to plant seeds of encouragement to some new sewists. Have a great day.
Thank you so much for this! This is the best intro to patterns I've come across! I've always found patterns from the big 4 super confusing and had given up on them completely for a while. I'm just starting to try and figure it out again, so the timing of this is perfect. I've found that the Independent pattern makers have much more understandable instructions than the big 4. Thanks again!
I’m so excited that you’re coming out with videos on garment sewing! I like Simplicity patterns. They have different styles of clothes, and I like the fit for me. Thank you for the series, Vanessa!
I like simplicity patterns because I follow you tubers that have sew alongside with the patterns. If it wasn’t for the sew alongside I can’t understand the instructions....even the easy ones sometimes are confusing.
Enjoy seeing your how-to-videos very much. Sewing is my interest, garments, quilts, crafts. Favorite pattern for myself is toss up between McCall's & Butterick; for children Simplicity. Pants & tunics are what I now wear, if I fall I want me bum to be covered. If I find a dress pattern I really love, hack it into a tunic...
Hi so glad I found you. Love your videos. I am trying to refresh my sewing skills and knowledge. I haven't sewed for a long, long time. LOL I want to sew again since now I have a lot more time. It was a hobby that I loved, but once I started working full time, started a family and became a registered nurse, my life got in the way of my hobbies. Now I can start to make things again. I will be checking out machines and supplies. I have to start from scratch. LOL. I used to use Simplicity patterns. Thanks for making your wonderful videos. You are a blessing to those who want to learn to sew and have fun with it. :)
I see clothes but get confuse with the multi size patterns. I can't wait to see your series. Awesome material, some things I didn't know. Also, I like Simplicity because they are what we learned to see in school. I'm 58 years old.
At last! You said you were going to do this and I am so grateful you are and very anxious to begin watching and learning the Crafty Gemini way. Haven't used any commercial patterns for a long time - - gave up on them. Currently involved with Sure Fit Design patterns, drafting patterns, and they are excellent for fit.
I am so excited for this new series! I dabbled a bit a couple of decades ago with clothing and costumes but all things quilting captured my heart. Now that I’m housebound with chronic illness I have the need and the desire to make my own custom comfy and creative clothing. I’m very petite and sick of wearing kids size pyjamas 24/7! My new overlocker arrives tomorrow too so I’m ready to learn and start a new practical wardrobe for myself!
Thank you sooooo much for this video. I have been looking for something like this for some time . I just started sewing not that long ago and have struggled with these patterns. You have read my mind😄. I enjoy your videos and look forward to you next video.
Great info Vanessa, thank you! I'm new to garment sewing, pdf patterns & using a serger & like Patterns For Pirates & New Horizons pdf patterns because they are easy to follow for beginners & have great support & inspiration in their FB groups. Looking forward to more of your informative videos!
Last year, I started sewing my own clothes. My fav pattern companies are Patterns for Pirates and Made for Mermaids. I found they have less pieces than the Big 4. I tried making a jacket from Simplicity and I never finished it. It had 15 pieces. I have a jacket pattern from Greenstyle Creations and I love it. It had 4 pattern pieces. So glad fall is here.
Love the video! I have to say that I have mostly tried patterns from the big 4 for garments I sew for myself. I have had some issues with fit for my curves. I've heard there are some great indie patterns for curvy women but I haven't tried many yet. I do like Mimi G's indie patterns as the directions are pretty easy to follow and the fit is good. I can't wait to see your upcoming garment videos!
This series is exactly what I have been looking for. I am so excited and thankful for this garment sewing series you are starting. I love your channel, but I am not a quilter and so I kind of lost interest - until now! :) I have ordered your measuring tape and can't wait to receive it, it looks pretty neat.
Thank you for making this video. I'm looking forward to your coming videos. I have been sewing for years, but I avoid sewing for myself because I am short and tend to have trouble making things fit me.
Yes, please! More garment sewing videos! I really like several of the indie pattern designers, especially Lisa Comfort of Sew Over It. I have downloaded several PDF patterns but have yet to print them out. Has anyone found a reliable print shop for the A0 option?
I just discovered you and you are awesome. I am going to do your sew along on that shirt. I need all the help i can get i am so new to sewing and have to have the basics skill explained to me and I am learning a lot I had no idea that the store clothes were not the same as the patterns. Only thing i do not like about that it seems i am bigger than i thought. LOL I love your positive body image and to take our bodies just the way they are. Cant wait until I watch all of your videos. i am more into crafty things because I do cross stitch and i need ro make finishes for them like turning them into pillows or wall hangings etc.
Great video! I just bought my first sewing machine (Bernina 570QE) to learn to quilt. Now would like to learn garment sewing. Can you give me your opinion on whether a PDF or hard copy pattern would be best for a beginner? Many thanks in advance!
Thanks so much , wonderful information. So glad you will be sharing the pattern for the blouse you are wearing. Very cute and looking forward to making one! Keep up the good work.
I am so excited that you are going to be making this line of videos! I can't stand those tissue paper patterns. I'm looking forward to checking out Angela Wolf's line. I just started copying my own clothes to try to avoid using patterns.
my grandmother taught me how to sew when I we a little girl and she would make her own patterns from newspaper she would see a outfit in the store and go home and make it her self I use patterns like one ones you spooked about thank you your vedio is so helpful
Hi Vannessa, thanks for these videos. I would really appreciate a tutorial on different fabric types. I live in a small coastal town in Australia and we don't have a local fabric shop, therefore I am now buying my fabric online. I know the basics of fabric types eg. woven, knits, fleece, cotton etc. but there are so many fabrics that I don't recognise and can't be sure if they would be ok for the garment I'm making. The patterns suggest fabrics, but (often) they don't match the names of fabrics online. I'd love your feedback. Thanks so much..............fabric confused!!!!
Love this video! I just discovered your channel and subscribed immediately. Looking forward to your garment sewing videos and going back to other craft videos that you've made.
Thank you. I've enjoyed Kwik-Sew patterns especially when learning to use both serger and knowledge fabrics. They were very user friendly with multiple sizes in patterns.
I trace my pattern onto butcher paper, write all the pattern info on the pattern pieces, iron it onto the fabric, cut, and when done hang pattern pieces on a hanger with clothes pins and hang original envelope with patter pieces with it...this way if I want to make another one in my size, it is super easy!
Great information. Pattern companies used to have a built in ease that they followed. Do they still do that, or does it depend on each pattern now? I'm a returning sewer.
Awesome 👏🏻 looking forward to the next videos - appreciate the help to overcome a fear and maybe actually make myself a garment like I've always wanted to
I've got dozens of commercial patterns, but I suck at following the directions, so I usually make garments that don't require a pattern. Someday I hope to make use of the patterns and make more elaborate garments.
Hi Vanessa! Great video - I've been sewing for years and I learned several things - especially about Indy patterns and PDFs. I have gotten several PDF patterns that came with the A0/copy shop versions. My question is should places like Staples and Office Depot print shops know what A0 paper is? My local one looked at me like I had 3 heads when I asked... so I'm wondering if I just need to go to a shop in another area... Keep your videos coming!
Love your videos. are patterns a necessity? Ive heard about transferring patterns to muslin? is this for it to last longer? or just for like multi use ease?
I like your video's, you talk at just the right pace, give complete info etc. On this particular video it would have been nice to mention that different patterns may be developed on a specific size. Or so I've heard, like for example Vogue may use a B cup or something. So if you are busty maybe try a different company.
Fun to think about garment sewing, but I am hoping you have not stopped the quilt alongs. I have caught up on both and am waiting for the next steps! For garment sewing I like some of the costume designers, Simplicity and Butternick seem to work the best for me, but I also made a nice 17th century jacket from a pattern from Amazon Drygoods. I have bought a new serger, the juki mo1000. I am not a dressmaker and still wondering why I bought it. I do not know how to buy a pattern that will fit me so advice on that would be good. I am a big lady. It would be great if you showed us how to make a simple tshirt from buying pattern, cutting fabric and using the serger to sew it. I would be so proud to have a tshirt I made myself.
Have you ever made any clothes from an Indygo Junction pattern? I saw a pajama pattern they put out that I like but I have never used their patterns before. I know I will find your videos very useful. Thank you.
hi i must say that i like using burda patterns as i’m a plus size and burda fit a lot better than the rest and i always look at the finished size and work out the size i need to cut out as some patterns have allowed generous ease allowance. which can be upto about 4” then the finished garment far to large from uk

I now only use Indy -Silhouette Patterns. All sizes come in one envelope, they are designed for curvy women and they offer videos to help you with sewing as well as fashion modification to use your patterns. I am not a fan of Angela Wolfe, but remain a huge fan of Crafty Gemini.
This video series is going to be AMAZING!!!! I have not tried them yet but the MIMIG sewing patterns look awesome! Have you tried any yet? Also, I would love if you could do a video course on leggings with a Yoga type waist band. That might be better as a paid course though. It would be worth every penny!
You should check out plus size fitting and design by Barbara Deckert. Excellent for what you are looking for. It's a book as well as a craftsy class. Barbara is amazing!
Quilting. Yes. Sewing. NO! Not that I never wanted to learn. Not that I have never tried. But the failure rate was enough to put me off for quite some time. Now, however, I am thinking along the ‘sewing’ lines again. I’ll stay tuned and see if you can get me there since the last sewing lesson received was in Junior High...and that was way too long ago!
I also was traumatized in Junior High and High School sewing classes(HomeEC) and never touched a sewing machine or even imagined sewing clothing until the emergence of such great You Tubers such as Crafty Gemini and Missouri Quilt company, plus Craftsy. Talented teachers make sewing possible for people like me, many thanks to Vanessa!
And now the big ONE *gasp* I love Indie companies as they have great instructions. Some of my favourites are Named Clothing, Republique Du Chiffon and Papercut Patterns
I like the big four patterns although I tend to use the simplicity and the new look patterns they are to most easiest to use. Although I have used the others.
Hello and how are u doing. I need your help. I want to make a comforter and i want to do it by hand. Especially the puff kind being that i don't have a sewing machine yet. I also want to do a puff circle comforter can you please help me or give me some direction. Thank for your time in reading my letter.
Terry Gordon : That's not a silly question at all. I wondered the same thing. That's a very cute blouse Vanessa is wearing. I'd love to make one for myself.
I wish I had seen this before I made my halloween costume last year because I totally picked too small of a range of a pattern and realized it too late. I tried to adjust it but basically it was a disaster. T_T
Whoa whoa whoa! Wait a minute! Are you telling me that if (for example) my bust measurement falls on the medium size but my hip falls on the XL that I can just gradually draw my lines from one size to another?!?! 😳😳😳 #GameChanger Please clarify if I misinterpreted. 🤷🏻♀️😝
Hello! It's 6 years later, and I'm just now watching this because I've started sewing again after a long break. Thanks for doing this series because I can refresh my knowledge as well as learn some new things. I like Vogue patterns for their style.
CraftyGemini,
Wow! Multi-size patterns!
This video is so good, I'm going to watch it twice!
You're THE BEST!!

I do this too. It keep your pattern from ripping.

I teach US history and we use the costumes for a video project.
I never know what size to buy. Need help figuring that out!
Thanks for this video. I’ve been looking into patterns and was having a hard time deciding.
That is awesome. I look forward to your videos on garment sewing.
Do you have a video tutorial for the little box you use to hold your red clips??? I'd love to make one!
I love patterns for pirates and made for mermaids. Being able to pick my size before printing is awesome. I also find better support when you run into issues. I also love that all the patterns have a great size range and is plus size inclusive.
I have been wanting to learn to make some clothes for myself as well. I would love to make some skirts (probably the longer ones/maxis. Thankyou for taking the time to do this series.
Thank you.
Could you please do a video on increasing or decreasing a pattern. My measurements are span three different sizes and I am so confused.
hi i must say that i like using burda patterns as i’m a plus size and burda fit a lot better than the rest and i always look at the finished size and work out the size i need to cut out as some patterns have allowed generous ease allowance. which can be upto about 4” then the finished garment far to large from uk
I love Grainline patterns and I'm definitely on team trace. I never cut into the original pattern. That way I can go back and blend sizes. I use Swedish tracing paper if I want to baste it together to check the fit.
Hi Vanessa !
I came across your page while looking up sewing projects. Im going to be a new mom soon and really want to start sewing. My husband and I are both considered "working class" and only gross about 55k a year. I keep hearing about how expensive sewing can be and it's kind of discouraged me. Is sewing really more expensive than buying ? How do you afford to collect large amounts of fabric ?
I’d love to watch your next videos about reading the patterns. I have some that i’d love to make, but have been to overwhelmed really by all the parts and information. Stil havent found the courage...
Maybe with your help ill dare to try :)
Also have been searching so much for patterns for clothes that would fit my pregnant belly right now, but have been unsuccesful unfortunately :( or how to change a pattern even.
Could you help??
Nice video. The good thing about pdf patterns is that you can save them to your hard drive and reprint whenever you want.
I love P4P, Duckbutt and Made for Mermaids. All three use PDF layers so you don't have to print the lines for all sizes which for me, makes things so much easier.
Thanks. very useful tips on patterns.
This is interesting, i have been waiting for this kind of tutorial. I like Burda patterns.
This video series is going to be AMAZING!!!! I have not tried them yet but the MIMIG sewing patterns look awesome! Have you tried any yet? Also, I would love if you could do a video course on leggings with a Yoga type waist band. That might be better as a paid course though. It would be worth every penny!
💚 your videos. You’re a great teacher!! So excited to see more. Thanks🌻
Love following your videos
Can you show us how to enlarge a pattern . I need a 5x pattern and I can not find any.

Can you share the pattern you are wearing. Is it a top or dress?
Hi I look you up, I never seen you see a easy coat pattern, would like to see one. never try, are they hard to see?
Thanks for the great info regarding patterns. My fave pattern company is Simplicity. Can't wait for the next video!
And now the big ONE *gasp* I love Indie companies as they have great instructions. Some of my favourites are Named Clothing, Republique Du Chiffon and Papercut Patterns
i don't understand fabric, how it falls, what's best for various clothes, i would like all explained please
I like the big four patterns although I tend to use the simplicity and the new look patterns they are to most easiest to use. Although I have used the others.
I would love a sew a long with that marcie tilton shirt. : )
Are Palmer/Palmesch pattern in 24 Women increasable to 28 women?
Iwant to know that I can send my own pattern
Simplicity is easiest for me to follow. I used to like Kwik Sew as those were also easy to follow and they used to have thicker paper.
Great intro video
Patterns for Pirates has option to only print your size. It's called layers.
Hello and how are u doing. I need your help. I want to make a comforter and i want to do it by hand. Especially the puff kind being that i don't have a sewing machine yet. I also want to do a puff circle comforter can you please help me or give me some direction. Thank for your time in reading my letter.
I know probably a silly question Did you make that shirt?
I did! Details coming soon!
Terry Gordon :
That's not a silly question at all. I wondered the same thing. That's a very cute blouse Vanessa is wearing. I'd love to make one for myself.
TheCraftyGemini :
I can hardly wait. YAY!!!!
I wondered, too!
I like Butterick Patterns ,they have the style and fit I like to wear.👗👖👙👚👘
Wouldn’t it be great if you could buy fabric with the pattern already printed on it in your size
Also, if you could talk about plus size patterns not many talk about that, recommend some easy plus size patterns would be great. Thanks
I wish I had seen this before I made my halloween costume last year because I totally picked too small of a range of a pattern and realized it too late. I tried to adjust it but basically it was a disaster. T_T
I will be watching I wanna learn to make clothes
Whoa whoa whoa! Wait a minute! Are you telling me that if (for example) my bust measurement falls on the medium size but my hip falls on the XL that I can just gradually draw my lines from one size to another?!?! 😳😳😳 #GameChanger Please clarify if I misinterpreted. 🤷🏻♀️😝
Yes! That is the case, indeed!
TheCraftyGemini WEPA!!!!! 💃😎💃😎 #MindBlown #NoButForRealz
