The Middle Ages covered almost a 1000 years. And there were vast differences between the "early" Middle Ages (c. 500 to c. 1000 AD), then there wwere from the "later" M.A. The early period (generally called the Dark Ages), life was indeed tough. No doubt about it. However, after about 1000 A.D. things got much better. A better climate. Changes in agricultural production that increased the food supply. Growing population. Political turmoil lessened, as kingdoms and nations became more stable.
I'd probably start off as an NPC, get disgruntled from never getting anywhere in my life by 25 or so, then join a group of bandits raping and pillaging for a solid 2-3 years before my head is lopped off after the kings men show up en masse at my camp. Sounds like a decent life to me.

miathapapaya Humans have gotten through worse ordeals than the unsanitary culture of the Middle Ages. We’ve survived a terrible Ice Age, managed to find peace after two massive world wars, and have put up with the forces of nature, from huge tsunamis to tornadoes and deadly hurricanes. Humanity has survived a lot. We’ve been through hell and back. The Middle Ages weren’t any different.
NO! In fact it wasn't uncommon for people to live well past their 60s in weastern europe! Peasants were in great shape back then. People died from illness? Sure but people still do today. Sure medicine back then was primitive but they had something called and immune system that works great with a healthy balance diet. Why would they die of stress and exhaustion? They aren't slaves. Because they worked hard? To us maybe yes but to their standards it was routine! Also people bathed! Believe or not soap is a medieval invention! SO YES they did get through it!

Molino Eric the funny thing is that no one walked on water when they were punished. They also burned every red haired person because they thought they were hitches
The middle ages and the dark ages were two different time periods, though both connected. The former was more advanced than the latter, which occured due to the fall of the Roman empire and the chaos that ensued as a result. Also the life of a knight wasn't much better than that of the serfs. They had a little more wealth and status, but they also had to obey every command that their particular lord told them to do, as well as the Church. This the life of the average knight was much more brief than that of the peasant, though neither lived exactly long lives in the first place.
The Church again? The one that had its Pope abducted to Avignon? The one that failed to ban longbows and crossbows? The one that failed to prevent the 30 years way, the Hugenotte wars, the Waldensian heresy, the Hussite heresy, the witch hunts, etc? Is that the overpowered Church you are talking about?

@@Sizzle78 No, witch hunting wasn't supported by the church or the big institutions during the medieval age and the witch hunting craze was a thing of the early modern period in the 16-17th century. That's also the time they used the ordeal of water that way. When it was used during the medieval age (very rarely and it was basically seen as a thing of the past during the high medieval age and associated with paganism) , it was used in the exact opposite way: you throw someone into water and if the person manages to escape the water that person is innocent and the accuser got executed.

People living back then weren't any less happy than people living today. They knew nothing of the luxuries that we possess today, and so they viewed what they had as more significant. They were adapted to their reality. And as such, enjoyed life and suffered as well.

This is really amazing to see how far we came from those days, how much our science, technology and engineering have advanced. But it is also unfortunate to see that still some people do not value the humankind and keep involved in destroying it.

@xiax not saying I agree with him, but Germany did kind of cause both world wars, let Adolf Hitler kill a bunch of their people and put them through hell. So, he's not completely wrong. Political turmoil lessened, as kingdoms and nations became more stable.

miathapapaya Humans have gotten through worse ordeals than the unsanitary culture of the Middle Ages.
