The exception, however, was one year that was particularly burdened with a level of tragedy and strife most historians say surpassed any other moment in history: 536 CE. The volcanic activity around the world in 536 AD must have been massive. A more recent similar event happened the last time Krakatoa blew in 1883 and the volcanic winter was only half as bad as 536. And the Krakatoa eruption was no joke. Tens of thousands of people died from the explosion and tsunamis, and people in western Australia heard the blast, almost 2,000 miles away. It was the loudest recorded sound in modern history. Imagine what it would have been like in 536. 💀

hi, US American here, but i’m an engineer and appreciate Celsius. @ 2:55, the unit conversion doesn’t make sense. The global temperature dropped between 1.6 to 2.5 degrees Celsius. 1.6C is indeed equivalent to 34.88F, and 2.5C to 36.5F. But the temperature didn’t drop to nearly freezing, it dropped a few degrees from the then average temperature. You need to convert one degree system to the other, meaning we need to know how many Fahrenheit degrees fit into a Celsius degree. In Celsius the difference in degrees between freezing and boiling is 100 units. In Fahrenheit the difference is 180 (32 to 212, idk why either) so comparing 100 to 180, 1 degree of Celsius is 1.8 times bigger than a degree of Fahrenheit. So the global temperature dropping 1.6 to 2.5 degrees C means it dropped 2.88 to 4.5 degrees F.

Yeah that part left me scratching my head as well. Obviously way, WAY off in the conversion (fellow engineer here too). Lol, if the average global temp really had dropped some 35 degrees F, then 536 wouldn’t have just been the worst year for everyone. It probably would’ve also been the last year for everyone.

the formula to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit is (1.8C)+32=F
1.6 C is equivalent to 34.88 F.
But if the average temperature is, say, 13.9 C (or 57 F), but then drops by 1.6 C, it becomes 12.3 C (or 54.1 F). So a drop by 1.6 C would be equivalent to a drop by 2.9 F.

It is a fascinating analysis of various cultures based on historical records and scientific evidence from all over the world that describes the results of this event. His examination leads to the conclusion that the volcano was Krakatoa. The world wide impact of this event indicates that the volcanic explosion was huge, and was most likely near the Equator. I have read it several times, and highly recommend it to your audience.

Yes, 536 was then a devastating year. It was almost a millennium and a half ago. I feel blessed to be in 2023. It was common to die early for so long, due to no medicine like now. 536 was the worst year ever. Let's not complain about now.
