  • Darlene Armstrong, director and co-owner of the Denver School of Metal Arts, shows you how to safely mix liquid etchant using powdered ferric chloride. Darlene prefers to use powdered ferric chloride instead of pre-mixed etchant because it etches faster than pre-mixed solution. Since ferric chloride is an acid, it's essential for metalsmiths to know how to mix, store and handle this solution safely.
Chemical etching is a great way to create specific, customized texture patterns and designs on copper, brass or nickel jewelry. It can be used in a variety of applications including enameling or creating your own roll printing plates at home.
