hey @TheCrafsMan I used to make my own homemade electronic circuit boards using this etching technique, printing a circuit and applying to a copper plate..
But instead of a heat gun, we used a regular clothes iron. Copper plate squeezed between some paper towels and iron them together.
So applying pressure, while heating makes the ink grip on to the copper better.

There are cheers around the house when there's a new Crafsman video. Loved this one. Thanks my friend.
I do get the same peace that I would have watching Mr. Rogers do picture-picture.
I loved his field trips: to the music store, the crayon factory, the symphony. He was the best.
I'm glad my kids have you. You talk to your audience like they're intelligent just like Mr. Rogers did. He never talked down even though he was most times talking to 5 year olds. Plus, I can sit and watch and get as much enjoyment and education as my kids do. Can't do that with kid's programing anymore.

I've been etching circuit boards with the DIY mix for years, and I've also used it to do some small designs in aluminum in the past. What I did *not* know is that it will also etch stainless, and that is wonderful information to have in my arsenal. It never even would have occurred to me to try it. Thank you for teaching me something today! :-)

Muriatic or more correctly, hydrochloric acid, is a very strong acid that has mild reactivity because of the lack of an oxidant. Once you incorporate an oxidant, hydrochloric acid will attack most metals except silver.

Crafsman, I could have sworn you did a video like this in the past but when I went back to your video list I couldn't find it.
On top of this, the second oldest video I could see there, about transferring photos to metal, after the old weathering wood video, said that it was in response to questions about a previous wood photo transfer episode that I can remember watching but that is now similarly unlisted.
Why have you gotten rid of these great videos? They mightn't be as professional as your more recent content, but I would consider them much loved videos, especially to early subscribers such as myself.
Please relist them because they are part of your channel's history and a testament to how far you have come.

    • @dawnbreisch6350

Yes, please. I sure hope you only made them private and can republicize them, so as not to lose the comments

    • @TheCrafsMan
      @TheCrafsMan  5 ปีที่แล้ว +30

That's a good question! Actually, I didn't delete them, but simply made them "Unlisted". The reason for that: I've made videos about each topic, using easier techniques. I didn't want someone to sit through the Paper Rub-Off video, for example, and then be like "SNAP! I could have done this transfer with label release paper, and still had time to get to Fred's before they closed!"
While I do receive money from TH-cam for ads being played on my video, I'd rather someone get good information from ONE video, than to have to watch multiple ones to get the best info. :)

    • @Figulus
      @Figulus 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I can understand this, however, since TH-cam does allow you to change videos' thumbnails, you could possibly superimpose a label onto their existing thumbnails saying "Old" or something and that way we'd be able to binge on your content and new viewers would still be able to get the most updated content. Alternatively, you could make a playlist of unlisted videos only accessible through the playlists tab.

    • @dawnbreisch6350

If you would pretty please make your videos ALSO available to be purchased through your Etsy or direct from your workshop, we wouldn't have to worry about our favorite videos gong unlisted... Hey Crafsman! Love the channel!
I'm a printmaking college student that's been etching copper in ferric chloride for just a short while, love seeing the ingenuity in the DIY side of it, especially since I'd like to continue my intaglio stuff when I leave and might not have a studio like I've got access to now.
We call this method of etching an "open bite" because of all the open surface getting eaten away, and we like to use vinyl contact paper to make little cutout shapes (just like the stuff you put in drawers and on shelves when you wanna protect them)
Can't wait to try the press n peel on a plate sometime! Seems a lot easier than how we do photo transfers onto plates, with a lot of photosensitive stuff involved.
Oh! If you wanna be able to use your etchant for a very long time you shouldn't let different types of metals be in the same container because it'll make your acid really weak with lil particles making weird chemical reactions
My professor told me that same thing that a lot of people that use the fish bubbler thing, but they find after a while that their bubbler stops working and their acid doesn't work so well either, probably because there's some metal bits in most of the machines
she also told me some people in really high altitudes have a fire/heater going on underneath their acid tanks to make sure it bubbles real good with heat, and they don't have to put their plates in there quite so long because it etches so much faster
We don't have anything that fancy in our new studio just yet, but if you dunk your copper in vinegar it'll also clear out the oxidation real fast and you can pop it right back into the acid for about the same effect as dabbing it away

Lavender Rathman: Thank you so much for watching, my man! And thanks also for the feedback/tips! I like reading things like this. I've got PLENTY of room to learn, and you're helping me! I'd never heard of not mixing metals in etchant, but hearing you describe that, it makes total sense. All the best to you in college, my friend! Thanks again for watching and commenting!

@@TheCrafsMan I know this is an old video, but I have two questions that I'd love to get answers for.
#1; how did you become so awesome!? I love your content! 2020 has been a crazy year and you help restore my faith in people.
#2; requires some preamble. I work in a kitchen, and the knives we have are trash (as far as maintenance and care). I watched the owner throw a $130.00 knife in the trash because it was no longer functional. I took it out and bought some sharpening stones, and after many hours of painful mistakes and practice that knife is now the best one in the kitchen. I want to etch my initials on it, but it's bad for the steel to heat it. Do you have any recommendations for transferring images that don't require heating the metal?
If I get a reply I am very grateful, and if I do not I'm still a winner because I have learned some new things in a very enjoyable setting. You rock Crafsman!!

did you ever tried photosensitive ink as a resist?
    its ultra precise.
you can actually use halftone meshs to create smooth edges.
like you explained, the closer the dots come together the faster the solved metall mud will stuck between those dots, wich leads to diffrent depths.
you can actually round off everything by etching without any resist at all.
ferric acid is perfect for that.
with this Ink you are also able to create multiple layer etchings.
    share you knowledge its EPIC
