  • Commanders always look for a way to get an advantage and so they choose the best possible location for the battles. And as such locations usually have a suitable terrain or are in the vicinity of the economic or political center, historically decisive battles had a tendency to happen in the same places over and over. We know about half-dozen battles of Thermopylae and Kosovo, and so many other geographical locations had multiple battles. For India it is the city of Panipat, just under 100 kilometers away from the capital Delhi. Three crucial fights happened here and they decided the fate of the entire subcontinent for centuries. In this documentary we are covering two of these battles that happened in 1526 and 1556. The Mughal Empire led by Babur and Akbar had to fight against the Delhi Sultanate of Ibrahim Lodi and the armies of the Sur Empire under the command of Hemu at Panipat to prove its dominance. Let's see how these events unfolded.

Hahaha ...no .. elephants can be trained just like the horses. The rampage of Hemus war elephants impressed mughals so much that they decided to have elephant centric armies. Mughlas used elephants not only with cannons but also with rocket artillries.Later cannons were made which could be attached to elephants back. Elephants if trained properly can be a battle winner along with cannons.

One innacuracy here: Hemu wasn't killed when the arrow found the slit in his helmet, he was wounded and fell unconcious. His army panicked upon seeing him fall and routed, and Hemu's elephant was captured. He was taken to the Mughal camp where Bairam Khan asked the 11 year old Akbar to behead him. Akbar refused to kill a wounded, dying man but was persuaded to touch Hemu's head with his sword, upon which Bairam Khan beheaded Hemu. Hemu's head was sent to Kabul and his body displayed in Delhi and a minaret was constructed of the heads of the other dead. I guess the Mughals were still descendants of the Mongols after all.
Also interesting was that Hemu was a Hindu who was the prime minister for the Muslim Sur dynasty, and his rebellion against them was his attempt to establish his own kingdom. He took the ancient title of Raja Vikramaditya and defeated the Mughals at the Battle of Delhi, but lost his artillery in a later battle against the Mughals, which helped lead to his defeat at Panipat. Hemu is still revered by many in India today. Bairam Khan was later assassinated by an Afghan general who fought for Hemu.

An interesting anecdote, but Babur's multiethnic army of Turks, Mongols, Persians, Afghans, and later Hindus would actually give rise to the language of Urdu, due the cultural melting pot that Babur's army was. Modern day Urdu is really an amalgamation of numerous languages, including Hindi, Arabic, Turkish, Punjabi, Pashtun, Farsi, and even a little Greek.

I recall my father (born1915) telling me that Urdu was the language of the educated; it was the language he learnt as a child when he went to school, he could read and write Urdu. As Urdu was a written language, most villages had a scribe who would write out the letters etc for the uneducated. My father was a Sikh, born in what is now Pakistan. Most Punjabi’s, of which there are Sikh, Muslim, and Hindu share a common language and culture.

      Delhi Sultanate is Turkic Empire.
      Delhi Sultanate
Qutb al-Din Aibak, a former Turkic Mamluk slave of Muhammad Ghori, was the first sultan of Delhi, and his Mamluk dynasty conquered large areas of northern India. Afterwards, the Khalji dynasty was also able to conquer most of central India, but both failed to conquer the whole of the Indian subcontinent.

Fun fact: Historians say that Sheh Shah Suri was once a soldier in the army of Babur, but when Babur was celebrating his win in one of the battles, he noticed that this soldier of his had quite a radiant face and was looking way too confident. Fearing which he ordered to remove Sher Shah Suri from the army. Taking it as his insult, that day, Sher Shah promised himself that he won't let the Mughal empire flourish, which he did when 12 years later he attacked Babur's son, Humayun and made him run for his life.
