Kings and Generals Khaljī dynasty INDIAN DYNASTY WRITTEN BY: The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica See Article History Alternative Title: Khiljī dynasty Khaljī dynasty, also spelled Khiljī, (1290-1320), the second ruling family of the Muslim sultanate of Delhi. The dynasty, like the previous Slave dynasty, was of Turkish origin, though the Khaljī tribe had long been settled in Afghanistan. Its three kings were noted for their faithlessness, their ferocity, and their penetration of the Hindu south.

@@desselerant1806 Alexander didn't conquer the world, Egypt, Persia and northern India is not the world, Genghis Khan conquered more territories than Alexander!
They conquered China. Heat would not be a problem. They can invade during winter time in Northern India. The reason they failed is, the great conquests of the Mongols which we are aware happened much before 1390's. The Mongol armies that the Delhi Sultanate faced was a shadow of the army under Ghengis, Jebe Subutai, Hulagu. Had the Mongols invaded while they were a united force India would have come under Mongol rule and I wouldn't be typing in English.
When Ghengis Khan had camped on the other side of the river Indus, the only thing that stopped him from crossing over was the pragmatic decision taken by the Delhi sultan of not assisting the Kwarezmian prince who had entered India and was seeking help from Delhi. If Delhi had supported him then, we might have seen the finest fighting force on the planet at that time breeze past the Delhi armies.
@@ramkrishnan8476 Any idea on how effective the elephants were against the Mongols? I feel like they would probably scare the shit out of any horses (and people) that had never been around one before.
@@corndogrequiem1728 Alexander the Great had also fought against the Indians and his army was effective against them. The elephants were fearsome without any doubt, but history would point out that an army with elephants had also lost. Example, when Timur the Lame invaded India in the later part of 1300's he was faced with an army that had numerous elephants. He devised an ingenious plan of setting the back of his camels on fire and forcing them to run towards the elephants. The result was that the elepahnats trampled their own men out of fear
@@corndogrequiem1728 Ghengis Khan had the ability of spotting talent. Subutai was a commoner and was elevated to the position of general. During his initial campaign against the Xi Xia Ghengis was having difficulties in breaking into the fort walls. It was the commoner Subutai who came up with a plan. It was to attack the gates and sure enough it would be repulsed with casualties. But while attacking the gate the Mongols carried a chest along with them. After killing the raiding party, Xi Xia general was curious to know what was in the chest. After making sure no Mongol was around he sent his party out to open the chest. When they opened it, they found birds inside which flapped their wings and flew away. This was the signal for the Mongols that Xi Xia soldiers had come out of the gate. They stormed the gate and the rest is history. Such brilliance, would have found a way to deal with the elephants, if it became too much of a threat to them.

There are a few mistakes I think about Zafar khan and his role in the battle against Mongols. When Qutlugh Khuwaja was crossing over India and marching towards Delhi, Zafar khan was stationed at Multan and not Delhi. Alaudin Khilji was in Delhi himself but was informed very late of Mongol invasion and hence had a very little time to make preparations for the battle. Many suggested that they should fight from inside but Alaudin rejected and decided to face Mongols on the battle field. Zafar khan intercepted Qutlugh Khuwaja on many occasions but Qutlugh khuwaja refused to engage him in a battle because he wanted to reach delhi on the earliest. He famously once told Zafar Khan off when he tried to challenge him by saying that Kings only fight kings and that Zafar khan should join his king against Qutlugh Khuwaja. Upon his arrival and when battle formations were set, Alaudin explicitly told his generals to not chase mongols without his orders because he was well aware of Mongol tactics. Punishment for such disobedience was death. When the battle started and Zafar khan neglected Alaudin's orders he found himself surrounded by Mongols. He knew no help was going to come. Only way forward was death and hence he ordered his men to fight like hundreds. 500 men killed 5000. Zafar khan in a bid to redeem himself fought gallantly. Mongols who witnessed such courage lost morale and once Qutlugh was seriously injured, the battle was over.

In the Bollywood movie "Padmaavat" Allauddin khilji was played by famous actor Ranveer Singh. The battle in this video lasted for mere 20 seconds in that movie where Allauddin breaks the defence line of Mongols in the dust and comes with other side with a severed Mongol head in his hand.
Alauddin Khilji was a very powerful and skilful general and administrator. A good social, economic and military reformer. Indian Media wrongly portrays Alauddin Khilji.

Alternative Title: Khiljī dynasty
Khaljī dynasty, also spelled Khiljī, (1290-1320), the second ruling family of the Muslim sultanate of Delhi. The dynasty, like the previous Slave dynasty, was of Turkish origin, though the Khaljī tribe had long been settled in Afghanistan. Its three kings were noted for their faithlessness, their ferocity, and their penetration of the Hindu south.

It's crazy how far the Mongols had traveled, pre-Age of Sail. Heat was their enemy, while cold never bothered them much.

Yes Zafar khan made a mistake on battle field but redeemed it with his life. Alauddin did the right thing

@Dodadeus sadly that is true we heard about ummyad, abbasid, ayubid empires and their fights with crusaders mostly and never really give importance to mongols invasion and related era.
@Dodadeus Baibars was one of the many circassians sold to egypt and became a mamluk slave soldier
not to mention the golden horde was still selling more and more boy slaves to egypt to be trained to become mamluks aswell which pissed hulagu off lol
berke khan also got pissed at hulagu for hogging the fertile and rich southern regions and leaving the golden horde with miles of empty steppe
one of the main reasons coupled with the sacking of baghdad that caused the rift between them
he also supported ariq boke against kublai khan in the toluid civil war
alot of mongols sympathised with berke becuase hulagu trully was hogging alot of wealth in persia which angered both the chagatai and golden hordes

That barlas tribesman named Timur was the great grandfather of Babur who was the founder of Mughal Dynasty which ruled almost all of Indian sub continent for 400 years. This Timur is the same person whose Epitaph in Gur-e-Amir in Samarkand reads- " When i rise from the dead, the world shall tremble." That's pretty Badass!
Babur put his footprints in India after the victory in Battle of Panipat in 1526. This laid the foundation of Mughal Empire in India. They were the largest power in India till the death of Aurangazeb in 1707. Unfortunately, his successors were incapable and in next 20 years, they were wiped out.
So, in reality the Mughals ruled large parts of India for less than 200 years.
So, calling 400 years of Mughal rule is just an exaggeration.
@@jpg4774 Mughal empire effectively ruled until 1868. Bahadur shah zafar was the last mughal emperor to Abdicate the throne. So essentially they ruled more than 300 years. I was somehow under the impression that Babur came to India in 15th century. My apologies for that but your facts aren’t completely right as well.
@@wazirfloyd Well if you consider the President of India as the Ruler of India, then you might consider yourself right, but in reality they were no more than Titular head of Mughal Empire with no power in hand.
They is a joke in Farsi language that the reign of Mughal spreads from Red Fort to Palam. :)
After 1720s, the Maratha were the protectorate of Delhi and Mughals were just Titular head. After downfall of Maratha, the British became the protectorate of Delhi until 1857. After that he was prisoned in Rangoon till his death 10 years later.
@@wazirfloyd Even in its heyday, the Mughal empire had pains in successfully controlling Central and specially Southern India. It was only under Aurangazeb that the Mughals truly controlled most of what is India today. So, claiming they ruled ALL of India for 400 years is a misnomer here.
@@shiveshsingh3169 That is why i said almost all of Indian subcontinent. When indians say british ruled india for 200 yrs then they are also wrong. They only had small territories of bombay, surat and Calcutta. Rest they captured slowly over the period of time. I hope you get the point. We cant be on both sides of the argument. Its the sentiment that matters. Hope this helps!

@Dragon Saviour if alauddin wouldn't resisted Mongols then there was no other power in india at that time so whole india would had fell into the hands of Mongols and so no hindusium
Zam 123 no mongols didn’t force anybody to their religion like Muslims. Mongols had freedom of religion.
By this logic, if a thief enters my house and loots every thing and prevents another thief from entering the house and looting, then I should be grateful to the first thief. What a logic! 🙏🙏
People should learn to seek and acknowledge the truth instead of defending the actions of people in the past. You can be biased but don’t be blind to the truth.
@@nightfury4756 Like I said ungrateful people.
Your logic: A so called thief enter your so called house. Which is a slum and people inside home dying with out food. And have no cloths or money. So called, thief, clear that slum, build a mansion, give food, cloths and shelter to every one. And when the real thief sees that, there is a mansion, so he comes to loot and kill all the people inside the house. The people in the house beg the first so called thief to protect them. He goes out and risk his life and protect and save every one's life. And once all done, the call him a thief.
Remember, if a thief comes to your home. He doesn't stay there his whole life he loot and leaves. Yeap, ungrateful people.

@@jahanzebnawaz261 there was cultural affinity between mongols and indian civilization owing to spread of buddhism. Genghis khan completely decimated the islamic empires and even the Chinese because of grudges the mongols held. If mongols wanted to invade India, they would've destroyed sultanates given how genghis destroyed all the way to caspian sea but it seems evident that he didn't want to cause destruction in a land he and the mongols had affinity for.
