Hearing him talk just proves how well he knows what he’s doing. Haven’t seen many of his films, but I plan on it after seeing Nightmare Alley and this interviewer. I’m always down to support filmmakers who are skilled and passionate. It help that he seems like a genuinely nice person
My favorite story about Guillermo Del Toro is that the young Japanese actress in Pacific Rim was embarrassed about having trouble saying his name so he told her she could call him Totoro (from the Ghibli movie My Neighbor Totoro).
That final shot! It's what drew me back into the theater to see it again, to buy the novel, and watch it a third time on streaming. Aristotle said for a plot to be satisfying it must have a climax that is both shocking and inevitable. When I first heard that idea, I thought it was nonsensical. How could an inevitable ending be also surprising. Mr Del Toro pulled that off perfectly.
I watched it in theatres 6 times - have watched a few times streaming - one day I saw it in theatres during the day & then streamed that night...I adore that movie!
I have watched this video over 50 times while in Film Directing School and scored a production scholarship from the Hollywood Foreign Press and now I’m preparing to submit to Oscar qualifying film fest; short film category. This interview saved my film from cliches and inspired me to reinvent the genre. I studied Del Toro’s Noir philosophy extensively during the development, pre production, production and post production. I could not find a clear Noir definition from professors so I adapted Del Toro’s philosophy to produce a period piece that speaks to an audience of today; it’s notions, themes and anguish and anxieties are all jammed packed on my film. I am quoting Del Toro from this interview and giving credit to Collider Interview, 12.21.2021. I also sent an indirect thank you Del Toro’s publicists. Keep up the great work - and I’ll keep you posted. JS
Great job on the questions. You could tell Guilllermo had new flashes of energy and inspiration and even joy as he came up with his answers. The original film was excellent, but GDT brought so much to this remake.
Really good questions here. If I can offer 1 small piece of feedback it’s that his answers are rarely met with any commentary or empathy, as you would in a normal conversation. There is a moment where instead of asking a question you give real commentary/reaction to what he said and then he elaborated and said more…that is good evidence that the format should not just be question-answer-question-answer where the only commentary is “100% - next question” …anyway just a tip, keep up the good work!
That's how he's been for years. HE SUCKS BIG TIME!!! I don't know why he's still here. And please I'm not being negative. It's just frustrating to see him not improve and have these opportunities with these great minds sigh
Del Toro’s description: Noir should be very much in vogue, because of the time we live in. It has much to offer during times of despair. So true, so accurate.
AU 45:16 / 48:32 Guillermo is a master. This film is a masterpiece. I watched it in black & white last night by reducing the saturation on VLC, but wow... what an amazing film in black & white, I hope he releases this as a black & white extra on the blu ray... in 4K!
I've never watched any of his movies & I thought Nightmare Alley was amazing. Can't wait to see it again. It's one of those movies where the first time you watch you have one viewing experience & the second time, knowing how it ends, you will have a different viewing experience.
I loved the nuance of relief in the end scene. Yet, i also liked th biblical punishment. Stanton indulges in all his desires: all the sins. Greed, obiosuly, but also lust, wrath and pride. I liked the given that he couldve escaped his fate had he made other choices. He didnt wanna end up being the drunken sunken old men, but he did. Yet, if he had made other choices, if he didnt take out his anger on old men, id he hadnt indulge in such greed, maybe he didnt end up like his father. Yet he does end up like his father and all the other drunks in the movie, because he makes the same choices. And thus, ist not so much about punishment, its about choices, fate, and karma.
He must have cut out the sections of the film in which rooney mara actually falls in love with Cooper and somehow wants to leave her entire life behind for him. Something big was missing or chopped up.
I never hqd something with brqdley cooper, but seeing him in this, knoeing he has directed a star is born, and how del toro talks about him really would love a kind of johmnydepp/burton relationship between the two!! or maybe even direct semi together
Yupp he always does that. Can't stand him. Watch his interview with Jordan Vogt Roberts for Kong Skull Island I believe. I was mad 😠 😡. Collider should get someone else
I would definitely watch a 3 hour version of Nightmare Alley… I thought the movie was fantastic
Me too. I’d be so down for that
100 percent. I was a bit disappointed there’s so few extras on the blu Ray. I’d happily watch a 3 hour film with hours of behind the scenes stuff.
Would absolutely love a director's cut! ❤
Me too. I thought that movie was amazing.
I've heard there is a black and white version. That should be an extra on blueray.
One of the greatest living directors, he is so gifted

Del Toro is known for being a super kind and down to earth guy.

@@kagelord985 omg i love that
he fits the part so well tooo
I can listen Guillermo for hours. He is a shine of wisdom, purity, kindness and intelligence. What a great soul ✨🙌🏻

What do you think is the best way to avoid clichés?
A marvellous man who has produced some of the finest cinema, Nightmare Alley was fabulous.

Such a great interview and an amazing film. I so hope there's a black and white version on the Blu Ray release.
A man with vision, he is fascinating.

Thank you for making so many beautiful films and I loved mimic regardless Nightmare Alley is genius!
Great interview about a great movie !
A phenomenal man.
He gotta do my biopic.

I read the book in black and white.

I recommend Pan’s Labyrinth, his master piece in my opinion.
You need to see Pan's Labyrinth.
Amazing interview!
When GdT spoke about limiting the colour red in the second half, I thought "wait a minute, wasn't it a black and white film?!" Xxx
There is 2 version of GDT nightmare alley in cinema: color and "black & white". I watched the color version
I throughly enjoyed Nightmare Alley.

I can listen to this guy talk about bread
I bet he eats a lot of bread
I NEED the 3:15 Director's cut please!
The interviewer was fantastic.

Cómo dijo alguien por ahí, la forma del agua es un cuento de hadas, esta es una novela negra.
A WAW SO COOL
I would watch 5 hours of that movie
He must have cut out the sections of the film in which rooney mara actually falls in love with Cooper and somehow wants to leave her entire life behind for him. Something big was missing or chopped up.
Yeah or that he actually actively devides to jpin the carnival, cuz now hes somewhat "just present", or works for zeena in the same manner
Nightmare Alley should win best picture
Release the del Toro cut!
One of my main issues with Nightmare Alley is that its much more enjoyable speaking about than it is watching the movie.
The book is amazing.
@@sclogse1 I'll have to check it out!
Del Toro is a genius, story teller, film maker, looking forward to Pinocchio! Will the 3 hour version be released ?
based blade runner shirt, also guillermo is the best person in the history of ever

1st. comment and 4th. thumb up. I want the original in 4K.
The guy who’s interviewing doesn’t know MOEBIUS??? What?
Exactly! I was like what???
Couldn't you adjust the color on your TV and put it in black and white?
So yeah The Shape of Water and Nightmare Alley do echo each other.
Trollhungters tales of acardia please Guillermo del toro
Collider, help him with his color correction so he's not the same color as the wall. Please? It's not that hard no matter the camera.

When you don’t follow up with a question after an interesting answer but immediately change a topic with next one. Such a bad interviewer.
I know. He said “I have so many follow up questions” and proceeded to ask about something else entirely 😑 Possibly adhering to what he prepared only.
Yupp he always does that. Can't stand him. Watch his interview with Jordan Vogt Roberts for Kong Skull Island I believe. I was mad 😠 😡. Collider should get someone else
He should've done Godzilla Vs Kong.
Terrible idea. His Pacific Rim movie was boring af. There was an hour in the middle where nothing happened.
I just started watching but if g d t doesn't mention Tyrone power ill be super disappointed
That "everyone knows this" "everyone knows I do this" is unbearable please stop it
This interviewer is drier then the Sahara. Awful.
