Plastic spinny thing. That’s what I’ve been searching for. This video is what I’ve been searching for!

This was a huge headache with my 2005 Tacoma. Had about 245k miles on it and the shifter stopped moving altogether. Had the shift cable replaced, expensive. Still it acted up and would not drive in overdrive. Took it to many other shops, they had no clue what was going on. Eventually just took it to Toyota and after another 1500, they replaced the shifting module and its been better since. If this problem ever comes back, I'll be coming back to this video. Thank you!

Just bought a 2016 4Runner yesterday with 60k miles. Next day this happens. Thanks to your video found someone had spilled a coke but the spinny thing was all deformed. Cleaned/lubed it all up but it was still balkey so just removed the spinny thing. Problem solved. Thanks for the video. Had to go to another video to show how to remove the shift knob n console though.

    Great video, thank you!
Tip: if you have plastic parts like that out of the car for cleaning and greasing, just wash/spray them off in the sink.
And before greasing other little parts in shifter area, try to suck it out with detailing attachment so as not to combine lubricant with dust.

Thx Dude, 2014 4Runner SR4 Premi 154k, your tute did the trick, after a very grimmey Chicago winter, had me concerenced $$$$, I did power wash everything down beforehand, that alone showed an imporovement, after your treatment, it is back to normal. I have to figure out how to remove the center shifter console, on the 4runner, that is differant than the Truck, just to get it all cleaned up. . All good for now, see how long it lasts. Thank you again CG. much appreciated!

My 2015 Highlander just developed the same problem.
    180000 km
I drove it 6-7 days a week for 8 years but 4 months ago I retired so now I drive usually once a week.
I believe this is the problem as when driving the transmission drives like it was new.
I'll get it checked out hopefully that's all it is.
Other than this problem my Highlander has been flawless.
I believe the Tacoma and Highlander have the same engine and transmission.
Thank you for the video I just found your channel.

I'm battling this with a 2015 Tacoma. I've dealt with it not being able to start because it's not in P when the dash says so. Now I'm unable to get to N to D unless I go down to 4 then back to D. The dash doesn't register anything below 3. This still was the case after lubing the cable on both ends and replacing the neutral safety switch. Now I'm in the process of replacing the cable itself. I sure hope its the cable.

My 4Runner was having a hard time shifting from D to 3. I forced it a little too much and heard a snap and some piece fall down. Now my shifter is loose and has a lot of play and won’t stay in 3rd but it still shifts to other gears. Any idea what it could be or how to fix it anyone?

What if the check engine light comes on and the code says transmission selector switch? Mine gets suck but only when it’s cold and raining. What should I do because I’m tired of mechanics ripping me off.

    • @CanadianGearhead
      @CanadianGearhead  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

Sounds like the switch on the side of the trans needs to be replaced, that can cause it to be sticky as well

@@CanadianGearhead it was the transmission range sensor, I called back and asked because I forgot exactly what he said. The part is like 40$ what do you think the cost should be?

    • @nickdean8758

@@marcuslarwa9098 if it was P0705 its is probably the neutral safety switch. you can see when you run it through the gears 2 or 3 lights come on at the same time (neutral reverse and drive when in reverse for me which set the code) if all the lights work how they should you can reset the code and lube it if its stiff and you will get some life out of it (it will also help free up the sensor on the shaft for when you eventually have to change it)
it sucks changing this part if your not used to working on vehicles ( just did mine last weekend and it looked about 10x worse than this video but did go relatively smooth) if your not in a salt belt you should have better luck. wouldn't recommend heat either. watch some videos on the 4 runners to do the job if you do it yourself. (helps alot)
what I did to replace my switch
      1. remove the connector, nut and bolt
      2. break all the tabs off the aluminum piece around the shaft (all 4) with a chisel
      3. break the main part of the sensor off with a punch and prybar leaving just the inside circle of aluminum on the shaft
      4. oscillating saw the remaining piece on the shaft ( i didnt get all the way through)
      5. pry the piece off the shaft with a decent size prybar.
      6. clean the crap out of the shaft, anti seize and install new sensor.
Idk what a shop charges but I have read that its anywhere from 500-700. a oem sensor is 200-300 so its not crazy. I went with a 35 CAD amazon sensor so Ill find out how long that will last.

@@nickdean8758 since posting this comment, the code was reset and hasn’t come back on since. The only time my shifter gets sticky is during heavy rain. So hopefully I can avoid driving during heavy rain and next time I get an oil change I’ll have the guy clean and lube it up real good. Not trying to be a dick and pass this problem on to the next person but I’m getting a new car in the next few months anyway. I love my truck but I’m during over 160 miles each day to work and the gas is killing me. So I’m going to just get a new Tesla.
