    In the back of my mind, I have been fighting feelings that things are just not right in the organization. My adult son and his wife disassociated themselves almost a year ago, and although I'm a 5th generation witness, we both knew there was no way I would ever shun my child, but then I never shunned anyone who left. I just couldn't do it. This video was amazing. I'm scared, but I know I can't continue living this lie any more. There aren't enough words to express my gratitude for your videos. Thank you very much.

      +Elizabeth Levine - I was a baptized JW for 23 yrs and could never shun anyone either. I never encouraged my kids to get baptized because even then it seemed crazy to entrust such a weighty decision to a knucklehead teenager.(I always remembered that Jesus was 30!) I hope you're doing OK now. And you have your son and DIL who are out. Big hugs to you and post an update if you see this.

      @@geet77777 I think your comment is unkind to this lady. Here is a lady wanting to change her situation after coming to a realisation that she needs to, and she should be helped and not spoken to in this manner. There should be a world of people ready to accept and befriend her, not ridicule.

    This hit home so very hard. The moment Jehovah showed me the truth of this organization, I was mad for all the years I lost with loved while I was disfellowshipped. For a over decade I “damned” myself. I had horrible nightmares of dying at Armageddon. I had self loathing for years. I was convinced I was not lovable. I finally worked my way back to reinstatement. I kept praying to renew my faith. Jehovah kept showing the control and flaws, but I kept at it, thInking something was wrong with my heart. I kept praying to correct my heart. It took three occasions for Jehovah to finally get through to me. I finally got it. Jehovah’s Holy Spirit is NOT in this organization. All of my wasted years were for nothing. I will never get those years back with my niece and nephew. I will never get those years back from my brother. And now because I left, I will be shunned again. My heart is broken. This organization needs to be taken down!They are ruinning peoples lives!I do NOT agree that the witnesses have, “the best life ever”. This organization has brought me a lifetime of heartache.

    When I started attending a nondenominational church I asked the pastor if he had a disfellowshipping policy. He said absolutely NOT! I then asked, how he kept the congregation clean . He said he isn't the God police. Everyone is welcome at our church..even people that are far away from God. No questions asked. The pastor said that its God's job to keep it clean. If people are doing things that they shouldn't, then they always leave.. I've seen it happen over & over. They either leave or they change their life ! It's amazing to watch ! We love people where they are at in their lives & help them follow Jesus... If that's what "they" choose. If not, they are "free" to leave. No brutal consequences !

      +dagobah 77 - I agree ! It's not our job to judge! We love everyone, even those that are far away from God. What better place for them to be then in church ? If they aren't welcome or if they are judged, they may never come to know Jesus! And if they choose to leave our church, the pastor will offer to help them find a church that's a better fit for them. It should always be about love & NOT fear ... Definitely not disfellowshipping & shunning !

    John, this is an amazingly fabulous video. I paused it a lot so I could get these notes in my phone. I have been df'd for two years now after about 40 years in the org including a dozen years as a regular pioneer - five of which were in a spanish congregation. I'm also a fourth generation witness. This shunning practice nearly killed me several times. I starved myself at first and got so skinny my mother staged an intervention and got me to go to an Eating Disorder rehab in Arizona. Then I went back into anorexia treatment when I got home. Later I went to alcohol rehab because I had started abusing alcohol in order to avoid eating. It has been the most horrible experience of my life and I'm finally getting better - especially thanks to videos like yours. I also got baptized at age 11. My brother is in the Writing Department at Bethel, Dad is an elder and neither of them will speak a single word to me. Thank God my Mother still does (although she is EXTREMELY unhappy that I refuse to try and 'come back') and has saved my life more than once. I also blame the WT at least in small part for the fact that I wound up getting divorced from my husband after 20 years of marriage. They just put so much pressure on us to do more, more, more and our little family eventually crumbled. It has been a total disaster. But I'm grateful for the opportunity I've had, as a result of being disfellowshipped, to find out the real truth about what is going on in there. Thank you so very much for your fabulous videos. :)

It is not my responsibility to issue my viewers with an alternative set of beliefs (or "good news" as you put it) any more than it is the job of a fireman who rescues a family from a burning home to then build them a new one.

    A common theme put forth in these talks from JW's is: "The Family/congregation didn't DO THIS to you (shun the DF'd person)...the DISFELLOWSHIPPED individual KNEW the consequences of their decision and therefore BROUGHT THE SHUNNING UPON THEMSELVES by their CHOICE."This tactic is EXACTLY the reasoning that an abuser uses with their victim. "WHY did you have to anger me!!? Look at what YOU MADE ME do to you!"Don't for an instant feel that you brought this treatment upon yourself. A DF'd person made a decision to act in a way that another individual may not have. That is all. Jesus led by example. He NEVER shunned a sinner. He endured ridicule for seeking out the sinners, which aggravated the holier than thou religious leaders.When someone gets re-instated, they do not seek out witnesses that showed them kindness while they were DF'd and tell them "Why are you a disloyal person, you should be ashamed of yourself for talking to me while I was DF'd" That statement is patently absurd.

    • @sundance8862
      @sundance8862 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +Steven Stone Steven, say it again another 50 times if you want to. You have no case to rest. The treatment of disfellowshipped is unchristian. Jesus fellowshipped with persons that broke the law while he was in their very presence.
      Also, no one "talks their parents into getting them baptized".

  • @dockspa

    John, they told me that I will no longer be allowed to listen in by the phone because I confessed that I got drunk one time. I also told them that I gave a prescription pain killer to my Nephew who is poor and hurt his back. Here is the catcher, one of the three Elders that were disciplining me had given me a pain patch that was prescribed by a physician, two years previously! Do you think he would say one word? No, of course not. I am physically and mentally bound to our house but they thought I needed to go to the meetings anyway even after I gave them many doctors findings.. Ridiculous, guilting kids into getting baptised....

  • @ispie69
    @ispie69 10 ปีที่แล้ว +26

    When you described how you felt about the realization that they were "taking something as preciousness as someones loved ones and turning them into a weapon"...man, brought tears from to my eyes. I can see the pain in yours as well...that as well as anger.
    I am just beginning to realize I can't go back. I have never been DF'd but have been inactive for over 15 years. My sister is a missionary in Namibia, but to this day will not allow me to visit my parents while they are there themselves on vacation. Again, I have never been DF'd. It has fractured the family so deeply that I am currently (2 yrs) having a bible study every week, trying to smoothing things over. Still, not enough.
    I came to think, "If the most revered members of this organization (Missionaries) feel that I am so dangerous and unworthy of love and affection, then what hope do I have? Worse yet, she is my family."
    I have avoided digging into the past history of the Watchtower, but for the last few months have been actively perusing it. It at times comes with horror the discovery of these revelations, of "kept secrets" and outright lies...brings me to tears. Like watching your video today...it hurts to see it (DF'ing) for what it is, but I am awakening now and wouldn't have it any other way.
    Thanks you John...making these videos can't always be the easiest but please don't stop. There are a lot more "little sheep" yawning out there...starting to wake up. Like me...

      Hi Ryan. I find it intriguing that you find the stumbling of others "quite amusing." Why is that, exactly? If you could also furnish me with an example of the "pathetic falsities" in the above video, that would be superb. Otherwise, it look like you're just thrashing out at me in frustration because deep down you don't like the idea that you're wasting your life in servitude of 7 blokes in New York, at least one of whom has an unhealthy fixation with tight pants.

    I have been dfs for 6 months. I rang my "believing" family and told them that I was distressed and close to suicide. I got a text back telling me they had called the police. And that they couldn't help me because of "loyalty to Jehovah" at the time I was still a "believer" the police came with an ambulance and the ambulance crew sat with me over a cup of tea and were really kind. I went to the doctor and he referred me to a psychologist who was amazing and after 5 sessions discharged me and I no longer am suicidal. AND no longer a believer. Because Watchtower stigmatizes ex jw with the negative term of "apostate" which is just one of many behavioural trigger words that instills fear into JWs that the sky will fall in if you make the slightest move in listening to another argument presented by an ex JW. However after my family made it clear that I was dead in their eyes I still go to the KH just to get a glimpse of them even though they are brainwashed and I still love them. even my grand children have been taught to avoid eye contact with me. But the 4 year old occasional slips up and shouts look grandad!! and is smartly reproved. It's so sad. How the GB sleep at night is one of the wonders of the world. Anyway I over came my fear of "apostates" and looked and listened to your broadcasts and say than you. I nicknamed you "Toto" because you pulled the curtain away and there was Tony the wizard of watchtower. saying don't look don't look. But sorry you can't unring a bell or get a genie back into the bottle. The weight that has been lifted of my shoulders is mentally refreshing. There remains the punishment for pulling the curtain. Wish me luck.

    I feel sorry for you all that grew up in this religion. I thankfully did not but when I was disfellowshipped I ran into one sister , ‘high up’ in the congregation , snobby , proud, cold who had never spoken one word to me in the 6 years I was there. She walked past me without looking my way, nose in the air, emanating haulty pride as usual. I took great pleasure in turning around and very passionately sticking up my middle fingers at her. ‘ Christian ‘ my ass. Jesus would have been disfellowshipped by these guys for showing love and mercy to all the ‘ undesirables ‘ such as the samaritans and tax collectors. Jesus came to call the lost sheep. He was so merciful. This religion is the modern day Pharisee / Sanhedrin. You are such a powerful and charismatic speaker and so many people must be thrilled to see you stand up to these people.

I became a witness at the age of 15 after the loss of my our darling father following the lead of my mum . i totally believed what I was being taught this was mid seventies i got baptised 1976 went on to b pioneer got married 1984 to my husband who had been born into the religion. he went on to b elder so we have really have been used and abused by this cult. we had 3 beautiful daughters and did our best to bring them up as witnesses thank god they didn't want that way of life as they got older although we never agreed with watchtowers teaching on further education and made it very clear to them that we wanted them to get good qualifications. Thank god they listened.

    Thank you Lloyd....I'm experiencing shunning to the highest degree...through the back door...after being a Watchtower slave since the age of nine years old... I can go back in time to: reiterate my experience, when...my Mother had me deliver a small tract to: an entire village to advertise a talk to be given by a Watchtower representative..."Religion is a Snare and a Racket". I have a story to tell.

I also appreciate your insight and how you communicate this very real issue, to the public. I'm sure that you know this already but what you're doing can really change and save some lives. I try not looking at the general population of the JW community with so much scrutiny. This, should be guided towards the leadership that's directly responsible for the fooling of the masses. I love that you address that in this video.

    The way JWs read the Bible most of the time is like cherry-picking. They dart from verse to verse asking the audience to open their Bibles at verses which they then read without the surrounding context.
    In their meetings, they do sometimes read chunks of the Bible in context, but they used to allow "brothers" to read and then make a comment on what that passage means. Now, they just read the passage and leave it hanging. I think they did that deliberately in order to stop the speaker from applying the passage in context.
    Many of the Watchtower's key verses are read out of context so many times that many JWs don't even know that there is another meaning. For example, they apply Matthew 24:14 to their own modern day door-to-door preaching work when the context from verses 2 and 16 show that it applies to the time when Jerusalem would be destroyed and the Jews would flee from Judea to the mountains.

      "An old cowboy goes into a bar and orders a drink. As he sits there sipping his whiskey, a young lady sits down next to him. ... She says, 'I'm a lesbian. I spend my whole day thinking about women. ...' A little while later, a couple sits down next to the old cowboy and asks him, 'Are you a real cowboy?' He replies, 'I always thought I was, but I just found out I'm a lesbian.'"

My mom used to be an ESL(English as a Second Language) teacher, which is a teacher here in the US who works at a school and teaches English to immigrant and other non-English-speaking students. She hung both the Bill of Rights from the US Constitution and the UN Declaration of Human Rights on the wall in her classroom and read and taught it to them. Many of her students came from impoverished and/or war-torn and/or authoritarian countries where human rights violations and war crimes are the norm, and she wanted to make sure these young people knew their rights.

    I am One Of JW's and I look to Christ and the Jewish nation as regards how old a person should be when getting baptised and in that nation you weren't considered a man till 30 years old and if the perfect son of God left it till he was 30, is that not the model to follow?

    • @jimbobaggans1564
      @jimbobaggans1564 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      GB Hunter I was 8 years old when I got baptized. I did it because I knew it would please my parents. They were pleased. No, thrilled, that I got baptized. That was just the thing to do, back then. It felt good to make them happy. I can't believe that this Morris guy, actually said to hold back from letting a teenager get their drivers license, to get them to be baptized. So, a witness should go to any length to force their children to be baptized? Is that the way that they roll now? That is supposed to be the right motive? I can't believe he thinks that's ok. This organization is so broken. Does anyone else see how wrong this is?

      @gbhunter5310 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jim Sherlock I've been baptized over 30 years and when I was studying one thing I liked about what i heard back then was that infant baptism is wrong. I personally think and the point I am making is if the perfect son of God was not considered a man til he is 30, and he is the example to follow, Why was your baptism permissible at 8 years old? Is that an age where a person has a sound mind or is it nearer to an infants mind?. There's a big gap between 8 and 30! The love of God is the motive not making the numbers up through infant baptism. Take care

    To me the biggest piece of evidence that disfellowshipping is a load of crap is in Proverbs 18:1- He who isolates himself pursues his own selfish desires; he rejects all practical wisdom.
    Since I was born all I heard from the GB is that you can't skip meetings. Sure you could study the same information at home that you would get the meeting but you can't replace the encouragement, refreshment and intense love we receive from our brothers and sisters at meetings.
    And they would read as a warning to those people who we're missing meetings Prov. 18:1. So there's no way I could be a successful witness who is selfless and accepts wisdom if I don't associate with my congregation. But if you're disfellowshipped the only cure for the elders deciding for you that you're unrepentant is to isolate yourself? 🤨
    They ALWAYS compare a disfellowshipped one to being sick. I've never walked into a hospital that had a bunch of sick people but not one nurse or doctor there taking care of the sick people. Disfellowshipping MAKES NO SENSE!!! And is not in harmony with what the Bible teaches.
    Tony is an arrogant lunatic who loves to hear himself talk 🙄🤦

    Just say that the Witnesses are right (and they are clearly not, at least on the subject of shunning). They are saying that if they associate with a son or daughter, that is inactive , that would put their own life on a paradise earth at risk, what natural loving parent would put there own life before their child.
    Would they put their own life first when it comes to getting out of a burning building? Don't they have more of a chance of "saving a child" if they keep up a loving relationship with them. Shunning is a heartless cruel act and I am sure Jesus and God are horrified at the way Jehovah's witnesses treat people who are struggling. Most of the people that leave do not turn their back on God, they are confused with the interpretation they are hearing because reading the Bible is not saying that meaning to them.

    Hi John
    Thanks for a very informative channel. It has been very enlightening to listen to your insights into the JW organisation. I have come to know people that are in the organisation, and it has been difficult to understand this people, but listening to your videos has made this more clear to me. Your videos have been on early and late for a few days and I like your style and clear thought, and I'm very grateful for the work you are doing. Specially the topic of shunning and denial to blodtransfusion to children is what is provoking me the most with JW.
    But It was a unexpected comment from you that made me want to wright this remark. I was cleaning the floors, and wanted to be educated and entertained at the same time, so I put this video of you to listen to in the background, and I was stopped in my doings when I basically was shunned by you. Listening to your videos I felt I was listening to a reasonable person with a healthy compassion, so I was very surprised when I was all of a sudden shunned.
    I'm from Faroe Islands, and here whale hunting has been a normal course of food, as long people have lived here. I however think there is a very big difference from the whale slaughter here, and in Japan. But since you know about the whale slaughter in Japan, you probably also know about this practice in the Faroes. The whale hunt here however has undergone a substantial revision, and the killing metode is quick and "humane".
    Thanks for the great work you are doing, and thanks for the education.
    Regards

    This is dynamite! How many of us knew the Watchtower used to be against disfellowshipping? Go to 16:43 to see the 1947 Awake article - i.e. disfellowshipping 'is altogether foreign to Bible teachings'. The article goes on to say (re the Church) that excommunication became the weapon of 'Ecclesiastical power and secular tyranny that finds no parallel in history' ... can't they (the organisation) see they've now become the same as the Catholic church - the power, the control ... thank you so much for all your research and time given to creating this fascinating, enlightening content.

The lady he married was reared a JW that had left and come back to the organisation. He has 5 children, my grandchildren who I am not allowed to see or talk to. My son loved his family so much that this has absolutely shocked us all. I have not had anything to do with him for at least three years and my heart is breaking . I love him and my grand babies so much. He refused to listen to anything I tried to talk with him about at the time. He called me a false witness for rearing him with different religious views then the JWs and he told me that I was satans agent. What do I do? kind regards Lorna Harth Queensland Australia.

    Hebrews 6:1-3 comes to my mind as a scripture which should prove disfellowshipping is wrong.
    "For this reason, now that we have LEFT the primary doctrine about the christ, let us press on to maturity, NOT laying a foundation again, namely, repentance from dead works, and faith toward god, THE TEACHING ON BAPTISMS and the laying on of the hands, resurrection of the dead and EVERLASTING JUDGEMENT.
    I believe this proves that a person doesn't have to be in a church to be following jesus. And that baptism isn't required. And if baptism isn't required then how can disfellowshipping be scriptural?
