  • The thirty-fifth episode of Boss Analysis.
As everyone knows about me, I love upgradable stuff in video games, it's probably the main reason I like Pokemon and Fire Emblem so much.
But what you might not know is that I even enjoy seeing bosses return later on with their flaws ironed out. First bosses in particular have a habit of this, but have they transformed into something that actually poses a threat now, or has all their time mediating under waterfalls and breaking planks of wood with their hands (or whatever they have for limbs) bore no fruit?
That's what I aim to find out in this video as I take a closer look at my favourite first boss returnees...
Remember, I haven't played everything. I'm not interested in hearing how I "forgot" bosses that I have no chance of knowing anything about.

Always nice to see someone put real effort into improving themselves, even if it's your enemy.
3:57 This happens a lot in Castlevania. Disappoint Lord Dracula with a lame fight too often, and he'll demote you to a 'NORMAL-ASS ENEMY'! Slogra and Gaibon do make a comeback in Dawn of Sorrow however, posing a threat to Soma even towards the end of the game.
Janus Cascade in Wild Arms 3 and his black hat posse are the first real bosses you fight when they attempt to rob a train, but over time he betrays his weak pardners in crime, becomes a demon, and a heck of a lot more dangerous even as you get much stronger as well, busting out new techniques every time. In fact, once he's fully mastered his demon powers one of your fights against him is unbeatable! If he wasn't easy in his very last fight (just because you've become much stronger since last time and he hasn't improved much) I'd give him a 10/10- it's very hard to keep up with the rate an RPG party can upgrade.
Oh hey, doesn't this mean all the Rivals in Pokemon count?

The idea of early bosses that come back later reminds me of unusual, but overall good design for Lord Ochu from Final
Fantasy X. So when you get to the Killika forest, you can fight it outright, or dodge it, or even attack it from the side (but this doesn't really do anything different as far as I recall). The thing is, if you try to fight it, you can run away, and you'll get 3 phoenix downs for doing this. It's kinda cool that you get multiple ways to approach an early boss, I just wish that happened again in the game.

    There are two amazing bosses that come to mind for this, both being some of FromSoftware's finest boss fights;
One that immediately comes to mind is Gundyr from Dark Souls 3, he's the tutorial boss under the name of Iudex Gundyr (Iudex is latin for judge BTW), he's a great first boss only overshadowed by Gyoubu Oniwa in Sekiro. His first phase is a dude with a giant halberd, the second phase he turns into some giant puss monster called a 'Pus of Man' and has a more erratic moveset while still keeping some kind of use of the halberd somehow.
Later on in the game, or early if you kill a certain boss way earlier than you're intended to you can return to a distorted version of the area you started the game in called the Untended Graves. This is in the past and when you reach the same area Gundyr is there, but this time you fight him in his prime under the name of Champion Gundyr.
Trust me when I say that he sure as hell earns that title, he's more aggressive and can do some insane combos when he goes phase 2 and isn't afraid to either kick you or shoulder bash you. He also has some variations to attacks that can come out faster or slower to trip you up and cause you to either roll too early or too late. That and when he goes phase 2 he gains this insane charge attack that hits like a truck. The track used is the same as the first one but I won't complain as it kicks major ass. While this fight can be trivialized with parrying I don't and even on my spell caster builds I take him on in an honorable 1v1 duel two-handing my weapon. My only real minor gripe at this point is that once he goes phase 2 he'll break combo to attack you when you heal, this and the runnup used to drag down the fight for me. I originally didn't like this fight at first but I've since grown to love it.
Champion Gundyr is currently my 5th or 6th best video game boss fight of all-time, also the other four are also from DS3.
The possible 5th one on the other hand is from Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and it just so happens to be a rematch fight as well. That being against your foster father Owl, you fight him midway through the game as a (IMO) disappointing fight due to the great potential being dragged down by some mechanics I find to be a bit bullshit, but it's still quite a demanding fight. In order to even get an opportunity to fight his once more you have to do some very convoluted stuff, but the reward is totally worth it.
The cheap mechanics are gone with a much more varied and demanding moveset to contend with that reminds me a lot of a discount Slave Knight Gael from DS3, which isn't a bad thing at all as Gael proudly sits at the top earning the #1 spot, and what I consider to be one of the best video game boss fights OF THE DECADE (I'll keep it at that). He has some crazy attacks you have to deflect (Sekiro is less about dodging and more about deflecting attacks), an insane lunging thrust that you have to either dodge or Mikiri Counter. Not only that but he will throw shurikens at you, throw gunpowder out of his pocket (used in first fight) and make a pretty big explosion in front of him (best jumped away from). Plus he can also Mikiri Counter your thrust attacks and perform a deathblow on you when you get posture-broken.
Deflecting doesn't reduce health but instead builds up their posture, fill the enemy's posture bar up and they'll be posture-broken allowing you to land a deathblow on them (so you can actually kill an enemy without lowering their health), depleting their health bar also does it, but that usually takes longer and it'll usually get to a point that their posture isn't able to regen fast enough. Although posture does regenerate over time and reducing an enemy's health with make their posture regen slower. You NEED to reduce Owl(Father)'s health for this fight, and that is easier said than done with how few opening you tend to get and how much health he has.
Phase 2 doesn't change too much, he summons a spirit owl that he can use to teleport or basically turn into a phoenix and fly strait towards you on fire that you have to jump over right before he goes for that aforementioned lunging thrust attack. The only real issue that I have is that the teleportation happens a bit too much.

I know another example of bosses turning into hell in the rematch.
The game I will be taking about is Dan The Man. Its a mobile game with a retro style gameplay that is free and you could probably download it on your phone. I recommend playing it.
*WARNING* : If you dont want to be spoiled, I recommend watching the Dan the Man web series 1-7 or 8 on youtube and then play the game.
A example of this is a boss called the gate keeper, it is a robot that keeps you from going into the castle, and its the second boss in the game (The first boss is in the prolouge for people who started playing the game). It is a boss that carries a minigun and shoots it at you. It can hit you three times dealing 30 damage before stunning you. It can also rush to you after a certain pattern and you have to use the platforms to avoid him. And it can jump up high and to avoid getting squashed you have to stay away from the shadow. It can also stomp its feet at you if you get too close. After a certain time the boss may have to cooldown leaving it open for any attack of yours.
The normal mode boss is pretty easy and simple, but did I tell you there is a Hard mode?
The hard mode version of the gatekeeper is more dangerous.
It deals more damage and it has a different color than the normal boss reminding me of kirby EX bosses.
It's minigun bullets this time deal 20 damage 3 times before stunning you. So it takes away 60% of your Hp if you get hit, so if it hits you with any other attack after you get hit by the bullets, unless you have a health potion that heals 100% of your hp after you get beaten, it's game over. (You normally have 100 Hp in the game.)
The boss even shoots longer too so if you're too late to escape the bullets while you have your invincibility frames from getting stunned by the bullets for a brief moment, you're pretty much doomed. Once you get hit by the miniguns its other attacks are much scarier and it immediately tells you what hell your about to through in hard mode.
When I first tried hard mode, I did not expect the enemies to be this annoying and I died a few times but then I died alot once this guy showed up, probably enough to rival my amount of deaths against the final boss in hard mode.

You know, while DKC is mentioned in this video, I thought I'd mention the version I own, the GBA version.
Really Gnawty works slightly different in the GBA Version. Every time you deal damage, he'll do a huge leap to one side of the room, causing the whole place to shake. As a result, stalactites fall from the ceiling, which you'll need to avoid as an additional obstacle.
The second boss, Master Necky, also has a rematch. At the end of Chimp Caverns (World 6) You face off against him before you can go to fight King K Rool. But MN has also brought along Master Necky Sr., and you'll have to fight them BOTH at the same time. I usually like to keep an eye out for incoming nuts, and focus on one of them. The faster you take out the first Necky (doesn't matter which one) the better. The other Necky will start spitting nuts at you in rapid succession, so they're a bit harder to dodge. it takes 5 hits each to bring them both down.

Yoshi's Island had this happen twice and it blew my mind growing up. New enemy versions of Salvo the Slime and Tap-Tap the Red Nose are both found in the Final Level of the game. Add that with Kamek trying to get you twice and it really set the tone of "no pulled punches" for the Final Level.

There's an arcade fighting game called The Avengers in Galactic Storm. In this game, you can pick one of the 4 playable Avengers, and pick an assist, as you progress through the story and fighting the enemies, who are pretty much bosses, as they have their own assists too. The first enemy you face is Galen-Kor, an otherworldly soldier with a big gun. He's hardly a threat. However, by the end of the game, you'll face him again as the final boss. And boy, he's hard. He'll start throwing grenades at you, shooting powerful shots with his gun, and call in a Sentinel assist to come flying and drop bombs on you, to keep you locked in place as Galen-Kor keeps on his aggresive keepaway. Oh, and don't even try to jump when he calls the assist, because the flying Sentinel itself hits you, so you're fucked.

Another first boss that comes from beyond the grave: Bowser
    In NSMB for Ds
The first world boss fight is bowser with the same routine, but after bowser falls into the lava bowser struggles out for a bit then comes up, then all we see is a skeleton of bowser ( dark). Later on the last world Bowser comes back as the 1/2 world boss, as a skeleton, he throws bones and is immune to fire, but unfortunately the boss fight is the same.
I'd give it 4/10 dark concept, lame fight.

    • @benhuang2773

How about the true final boss (Bowser teams up with Jr)? How would you rank that?

    • @zeldasmetaknight
      @zeldasmetaknight 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hmm I’d give it a 5/10 Bowser jr acts the same, and while Bowser is bigger and gains new fireballs the switch is still there.
The fight gets a bigger rating mainly that Bowser Jr apparently has no trouble tossing his fathers corpse to revive him and it the final boss
I began to wonder if Mario is the bigger villain, Bowser and Jr may have kidnaped peach, but Bowser didn’t deserve to have his flesh burned off while Mario just watched and said “That is so nice”

Speaking of, if this video ever gets a sequel, I think you're obligated to bring up Omega (Mega Man Zero 3), though I grant GBA games aside from Pokémon seem to be a bit out of your field and I'm not sure how well he fits the spirit of the criteria given that for the second round, the two-thirds of it have him fighting nothing like in the first round (plus it's technically three different battles, but against the same entity). Does it count if it's the same character but they act and/or look completely different? Kreepy Krow is probably the biggest departure from the first encounter shown in the video. I guess it's not my place to decide what fits on someone else's list.

One of the weirdest first bosses reappearances i saw was Elvis from God Hand. He just appears right away as the second boss in the game. Sure, there was a mini-boss in between, but still...
Compared to the first fight, not only there's some regular enemies alongside Elvis, he also uses some new moves, like a homing fire blast, a fire breath and a dashing palm strike (I probably forgot some other move he knows because some attacks he only uses depending of the game difficulty). It's kinda weird how Elvis is both the first and the second boss, especially when there's other 3 major villains alongside him.
