I had enough, is another good one, as every Paul ones. Gene song were not that good but still okay to me. It still sucks about the disrespect Stanley had for Mark after these achievements and his tragic death aas he was a good guy, never gonna hurt others as I heard.
Gene also produced a Wendy O. Williams album with just about all members of KISS (past and present- at that point)... the song "bump and grind" has a great solo by Ace Frehley!
You skipped over a very important Kiss album - Creatures Of The Night. Their 10th studio album ,released in 1982. This album is important because after the disaster that was The Elder, it was kind of like the beginning of their comeback.
Sure, I think Creatures of the night is amazing and that sort of started the revival after the slump but I think the makeup removal was sort of what then throttled it even more somehow. thanks for watching
People don't realize it now but 70's bands actually faced rapid decline in the 80's and Kiss was one of them ... Only Rush, Journey, Rainbow, ZZ Top, and Van Halen survived the transition of the decades. The same thing happened in the 90's - 80's bands were suddenly obsolete in the face of grunge/ alternative rock. U had bands like Aerosmith, Blue Oyster Cult, Heart, Thin Lizzy, Queen, Cheap Trick, Yes, REO Speedwagon, Styx, Alice Cooper, Nazareth ... all declined in commercial appeal in the early 80's after being massively popular and facing poor record sales and concert attendance on tour. Meanwhile, upcoming 70's bands like Judas Priest, Scorpions, Motorhead, AC/DC, Sammy Hagar ... were breaking big in the 80's. Kiss clearly had potential and great songs but their 1982 album 'Creatures of the night' sold poorly because the makeup band was clearly not the original Kiss and people saw Kiss as a relic of the 70's - uncool and unhip... The non-makeup era Kiss gave the public a new introduction to Kiss and people gave the music a chance and realized it was great, which is why 'Lick it up' sold triple the numbers of 'Creatures of the night' at that time and people started going to see Kiss in concert again... and clearly Kiss won over fans on tour as they proved that they were still a great live band. That was the saving grace for Kiss going into 'Animalize' in 1984... Gene Simmons was not reliably involved... new lead guitarist... session musicians on a Kiss record (not the first time though!) ... "Heaven's on fire" became a huge hit on MTV and Paul Stanley was clearly the star of the non-makeup Kiss... They were exciting again. They had great songs on the album... and they didn't look or sound dated in the 80's glam rock era. Even The Who had to buck to the 80's trends to sell records... Heart took up a glam image and used outside songwriters for the 1985 album and finally had a major hit record again... Aerosmith took until 1987 to have a hit record and needed outside songwriters... Alice Cooper needed to do the same thing in 1989 to have a platinum selling album again... Robert Plant had to reinvent himself as a solo artist in the 80's and cut ties to Led Zeppelin's music... Kiss was not alone in doing what they had to do to be commercially successful.
Yes the makeup removal was for sure something that generated a renewed interest in the band and it was maybe what kept them alive through this era. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment
Pink Floyd also declined and in fact broke up and they did A Momentary Lapse of Reason and pissed off many Floyd fans. Genesis went all pop. Queen lost America.
Styx, Genesis, Rush and Pink Floyd all veered from the Prog elements for shorter songs, different lyrical themes. Only reason Styx imploded was because Tommy Shaw was on huge amounts of drugs and alcohol and hangers on told him to leave the band and he didn’t need them. Dennis DeYoung refused to replace him until Tommy sold his rights to the band for $5,000 in 1989 to join Damn Yankees. Pink Floyd went arena rock on The Wall and only one song on the album was over six minutes and David Gilmour and Bob Ezrin were responsible for how the album turned out while Roger Waters bullied Richard Wright out and also forced Storm Thorgerson out and eventually Bob Ezrin out. The Final Cut was orchestral rock and Roger bullied Nick Mason out and David punched Roger out. The Final Cut was the lowest point in the band’s history. The fact that there was no tour for the album is telling. Then Roger believed it was over but in 1986, David Gilmour and Nick Mason said that Roger left and were going on without Roger and rehired Bob Ezrin, Storm Thorgerson and Richard Wright and made A Momentary Lapse of Reason although Mason and Wright were hardly on the original album because their confidence in their musicianship was ruined by Waters’ bullying. About a week into the AMLOR tour, Gilmour, Mason and Wright were playing like a band again and Delicate Sound of Thunder had Nick on all drums and Rick playing the keyboards like he once did. Genesis also went short song route and people blamed Phil Collins and his solo career for the change. Punk and New Wave shook rock to its foundation. Queen used drum machines and synthesizers and alienated the whole fan base in the States.
Obsolescence only applies to trends and the entertainment industry, not art culture and the vocational creativity of professional artists/ You're erroneously equating commercial success with artistic integrity and the ascendant vibrational cosmic energies of songwriting/ Billions of years from now we'll still be listening to songs from Kiss, Dio, Accept, Rush, Great White, Ratt, Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and other great artists from the '70s and '80s era/
This was their best sounding album, sonically speaking. Just great mixing. And the band was just going for it. The album title, imagery, and overall band vibes were very coherent. Heaven's On Fire is one of their greatest songs in the 80's. A perfect example of confidence and simplicity in a song oozing in coolness.
Totally agree on the simplicity with Heaven's on Fire, it is one of those songs where the band just hits something in a song. It was one of the first songs I could play on guitar which sort of says a lot about how easy it actually is :) Thanks for watching
I first heard animalize as a teenager circa 1995 or so. I was a big kiss fan of the early stuff, so I went into it with low expectations. I was blown away. It’s an excellent album. Hard and melodic, with well written songs.
I am liking this album more now than I did back then for sure, but I was also feeling let down after the makeup came off then... now I have a bot more of a level head :)
Paul, despite his bad attitude did manage to do a good album along Eric Carr and especially Mark St. John who did a great job on the album. While the city sleeps is a good song made by Gene too. One of my favorite non makeup album despite the lack of quality in the production. Raw KISS as I like.
Lack of quality in the production? ffs Grammy winning producer David Foster said it was one of his favourite albums and praised its production back then. Stop repeating shit you've heard and know nothing about. 😅
Thanks for watching, I loved making this video because Kiss was my first band to like. I did also one on Iron Maiden's Powerslave which I also really enjoyed making. I actually should do more of this because it satisfies my "historian" nerd side to dig into this stuff.
Sorta funny...I saw my first KISS show in KC (third show of the US tour). My buds and I went to see Runaway the afternoon before the show. I remember being REALLY confused because Kulick did NOT look like St. John. Still, the show was great. Props to Paul for dragging things across the finish line.
I had a really hard time with basically all their albums at this time, but now when I listen to it again I realise that I was the problem as well, I was too cool for school
These are all good points. Had no idea that’s where Bon Jovi got the idea to work with Desmond I actually love Vinny Vincent’s work with Kiss and with Invasion, and out of all the guitarists they’ve had, he was so talented as a songwriter for that cock rock style that Kiss were chasing at the time. Too bad it didn’t work out, and I think it’s fair to say that Vinnie made some mistakes. Regardless, Paul made that shit happen, and most of your observations were on point. Thanks for the info for the off the soundboard recording of Mark.
You should check that soundboard thing on Spotify, its fun to listen to. I think they lost a lot when Vinnie left, it was actually much more than I realised back then. Thanks for watching
I was 13 when got into KISS when they released the Revenge album. I was into their 80s albums. I saw KISS in 98 Dodger Stadium and was bummed that that they didn’t play the 80s hit with Ace and Peter. I would loved to hear how those songs would have sounded with original lineup. To be fair they did play Heavens on Fire and Lick It Up in the first farewell tour at Irvine Meadows that was awesome 😎 🤘
Yes I often wonder how it would have been to get to know the band later than I did (1979/1980 for me), did you learn to love all their older stuff as well then?
Mitch Weissman proved himself as a musician as the Original Paul in Broadway’s Beatlemania. I was there in the 2nd row. Mitch learned to play Yesterday LEFT HANDED for the mindblowing effect!!!!💪
I think Gene got credit for producing for a few reasons . 1) Making sure he was still engaged with what was going on as well as showing respect to him in a way that wouldn't hurt their relationship 2) The other thing is to keep up appearances with the band that gene and Paul were still a team that worked as one to the fans. 3) Paul knew Gene being was integral to the brand, and they both have been careful of that brand in their own way over the years..
Here is a link to the CD/Vinyl on Amazon amzn.to/47pKMvC and then here it is on Spotify open.spotify.com/album/5fy9u8pWFQtEO2Er9SSfcj?si=zimr12VNRFel9IM_A_p4Ew
You are right they realize that 2 of them together are way stronger than either of them by themselves. That was proven with the solo albums. I bet after that they made a second pact. Gene let Paul take over creative control & he got to do what he wanted outside of kiss and still got half of the money
Loved St John’s playing on this or at least most of this! He was perfect for what they wanted so I never understood the hate that Gene and Paul gave him.
They took off the makeup and regained attention. Good music helped but Creatures didn't sell so that can't be the reason. All about removing the makeup. That saved them. Then putting tbe makeup back on in 1996 saved them again. It is what it is and I'm a huge KISS fan
@metalandrockzone I'm sorry, man. I saw them live at monsters of rock in Bochum Germany in the late eighties. The women were dropping like flies, and I didn't understand anything in my hormone filled zit faced metal head back then. I still need to recover from that one I guess.
Keep hearing about Paul and Gene... maybe from Paul's mouth, that they are not the best of buddies, but indeed have realized long ago at this point ('84) that they need each other to make it big time.
Yes and I think that the idea that bands are buddies is a bit of a myth, in the end this becomes a business and people need to find out ways to co-exist and cooperate without necessarily being buddy buddy all the time. And these guys for sure have managed that
Unfortunately this is a mediocre album due to the fact that Gene was not fully vested in the making of this album. His songs on the album are weak. His presence is missed. Luckily Paul had a good batch of songs which helped save this release from total disaster. Also St. John overplayed on this album. His solos don’t play to the song. Luckily Kulick took over shortly thereafter and Kiss seemed to regain their footing.
Were KISS went wrong was, they never set out to make great music. They wanted to be the "biggest band in the world". The makeup, the controversy, just marketing tools. They changed their style to suit whatever was popular at the time, hoping to stay relevant. But that's not how you create a timeless legacy. Which is why KISS did their farewell tour in skating rinks while AC/DC is still filling stadiums.
Well I see your point and I sure think KISS became a business, and still remains a business. But on the other hand I also think that no band that started in 1974 would be playing exactly the same stuff as back then nowadays and be successful with it. Everyone evolves their music, for whatever reasons they chose to. I will be the first person to admit that there was not a lot of stuff that KISS released after say 1986 that I liked. Thanks for watching
ANIMALIZE WAS FRICKIN AWESOME.... IT WAS OUR GENERATIONS KISS. 1984...Better than Lick it Up ... This Album DOMINATED The KEG PARTIES.....NO OTHER BAND or Album CAME CLOSE.......ITS LITERALLY JUST A STATEMENT OF FACT... IT STOOD FOR 2 YEARS SOLID. 1984-1986....
I think Paul and Gene both realized, Without each other it would be extremely hard to start a new band , They definitely went through some lean years together, But whoever come up with the reunion tour made them more money than the previous years combined. Or dam near it..Peter and Ace once again became millionaires in less than 12 months
Yes they turned this into a massive money maker again, I guess they made tons in the 70's but again though, apparently the owed the label some money, not sure how that could happen.
@@metalandrockzone I went to the Hot in the shade tour,, By then they couldn't sell out small arena, The day of the concert, I bought 10th row center at Cincinnati Gardens , I can only assume they had believer's in the record industry or they promised to possibly sell the catalog if they could not pay people back, Shrugs
I dont know if its Vinnie or Veronica these days but never does it mind because V.V. saved Kiss's collective ass on Creatures and Lick it Up ! Back to back bad ass albums. Then they screw him around and we get animalize, asylum, crazy nights ......add nauseum.....skip up a bit bring vinnie back in a we get revenge! Notice a pattern here......
I remember being disappointed when I bought Animalize, but got tickets to see them in Peoria, knowing they would be playing the classics. Kiss embarrassed themselves in animal prints and bandanas and no one wanted to hear their new songs. Thank God for Queensryche opening in support of The Warning album!!!
Kiss were killer when they were a rock band, as soon as they got into the jews vs white trash thing, they were finished. All of the 80s and 90s they were just a marketing machine

Animalize is a fantastic album. “Thrills In the Night” is one of their all time best songs, imo.
I like I've had enough, Under the Gun and Thrills in the Night is good as well. thanks for watching

I love Murder in High Heels...love the groove on it.
Thrills is great, the rest of the album, meh
I've had enough is the best track
Creatures Lick it up. Was way better vinni should have stayed for animalize would have been better album
Best thing about Animalize is actually the live video they released in 1985. My brother and i would watch it over and over, on VHS!!!
Yes I watched that while down the rabbit hole, pretty good stuff actually
A lot of women wanna take Eric home and mother him. He may look like a little boy but he's built like a man! 😄 Me and my little bro also mate 😃

KISS are a joke band. Those two dews are filth.
I have always loved Animalize. I had it on cassette. My fave unmasked albums are Lick it up & Animalize.
Yes those two are good albums agree
I didn't know KISS cancelled their concert in South Africa... very cool of them 👍
🤘
First KISS album I purchased as a teen.
I've had enough, heaven's on fire, under the gun, thrills in the night.... such an underrated metal album.
It is an album that I have learned to love more now for sure. Thanks for watching

I have a soft spot for ANIMALIZE… and it has been the Kiss album I’ve listened to the most in 2024… great guitar work from Mark St John
He for sure brought a different flavour to the band
My first concert was this tour at the Sunrise Musical Theatre, great venue. Krokus opened.
Kulick was/is great.
must have been amazing to see back then, thanks for watching

Another long lasting band worth of notice...Uriah Heep. 54 this year 🤘

Those times were so much more rewarding, real effort to get one album! Thanks for watching
I think Gene got credit for producing for a few reasons .
1) Making sure he was still engaged with what was going on as well as showing respect to him in a way that wouldn't hurt their relationship
2) The other thing is to keep up appearances with the band that gene and Paul were still a team that worked as one to the fans.
3) Paul knew Gene being was integral to the brand, and they both have been careful of that brand in their own way over the years..
Fair point

Excellent video and research. Sub’d!
Thanks for watching and subbing! Welcome on board!
IMO Animalize is their best non makeup album.
Actually would be interesting to do a ranking of Kiss non makeup albums video
"Never seen the light of daylight." LOL!
Yes I just invented a new idiom!
Let's all take consolance in the fact that we didn't get to see Ace in one these goofy outfits
HA! that would have been something
Runaway is a killer movie that also stars Roddy Piper.
wait the WWE guy?
Roddy Piper is NOT in Runaway. Piper is in They Live. Gene was also in Wanted Dead or Alive with Rutger Hauer,it’s a really good movie I think.
ah man Rutget Hauer had few good ones back then
Liked and subscribed 👍 great vid
thanks for watching and subscribing
Yep, Gene went missing in action in Hollywood 😂
and at a certain Mansion as well...
Got The Elder it was so bad. :D
It was very special, not in a good way
It’s my favorite kiss album
Interesting, mine is Destroyer, I also really like Creatures of the Night and Love Gun I think
3:26 WOW
Very similar right?
I like how St. John plays on the first song but I guess the issues were there right from the start between Paul and him
Were KISS went wrong was, they never set out to make great music.
I was never invited to a keg party!
@@metalandrockzone Giant Keg Parties on the ICE with Giant bon Fires and a LOTTA KISS ANIMALIZE. Wish you were there...
Wish you were there... Giant Keg Parties on the Ice with Huge Bon Fires. And a LOTTA KISS ANIMALIZE.....FEEL THE HEAT. TAKIN YOU HIGHER....
Heavens on fire great song
yes total banger! Thanks for watching
Heavens on fire is about it for this album. Just like Gene said it had largely forgettable songs on it.
I like the first song as well and Under the Gun
It’s a surprise that they have fans. They suck.
Guess you are not a fan then :)
Yes it seems like they lost a lot when Vinnie left, thanks for watching
I saw KISS 5 times in the 80’s & all but once was to actually see them
The openers were always better
Who did you see open for them?
Animalize is in my top 10 maybe even 5 KISS albums of all time..
hmm that is interesting, i need to figure out which one I like the most. I think Destroyer for sure is nr 1 but need to think of the others
Animalize is one of the best and most consistent Kiss albums in their catalogue.
What would you consider their absolute best?
@@metalandrockzone no discussion: RARO.
Wtf did he say?
Me, I said many things
👍🏻❤️🔝
🤘
You sound like a Swede. Swedish people are the best.
damn I am not part of the best people then, I am from Iceland!
@@metalandrockzone Iceland has the best looking women (someone reported this years ago). However, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
KISS had 2 good yrs. After that they became a joke.
What years were those?
I remember being disappointed when I bought Animalize, but got tickets to see them in Peoria, knowing they would be playing the classics. Kiss embarrassed themselves in animal prints and bandanas and no one wanted to hear their new songs. Thank God for Queensryche opening in support of The Warning album!!!
Yes this was a strange time in KISSSTORY
I think this is the best produced album they released.
I feel that all their albums there from Creatures up until Hot in the Shade were pretty good sounding
God I hate kiss Motley Crue and Grateful Dead
🤘
80s kiss musically destroys 1970s kiss
Right on
I thought I was the only one who thought that lol
Said no one ever. 80s Kiss is The Elder, Unmasked, Crazy Nights, Animalize, Asylum, Hot In the Shade. That's a garbage collection.
To say KISS was better in the 80s over the 70s is ludicrous
In terms of compositions? I mean you feel the songs are better?
Worst band ever
Probably many who disagree but each to their own
Kiss were killer when they were a rock band, as soon as they got into the jews vs white trash thing, they were finished. All of the 80s and 90s they were just a marketing machine
thanks for watching
What are you talking about Jewish people versus white trash I don’t get what you’re saying
What exactly is the “Jew vs white trash thing”? Can’t say I’ve ever heard of this before.
You claim you're a Kiss fan for over 40 years, yet you said “Free-Lee”. 🙄
Thanks for watching
I didn’t. Stopped once you said that.
Thanks for watching until you stopped
Vinnie didnt leave, he was fired.
yes I could have worded that differently, thanks for watching
