Skynard sure had it rough they would have made so many more great albums if that plane never went down. And Leon Wilkison is one of the most underated bass players he was a bad mothafucker on the bass.
The ending of The Devils Rejects when they drive into the cops in a shoot out just goes to show Free Bird cements itself as the greatest driving song of all time.
Every time I watch any video on anyone or anything having to do with Lynyrd Skynyrd it has a way of taking me back to those years of the 70s with many, many fond memories of seeing them in concert and buying up all the albums and tapes of them as well as learning their songs for our bands to play. It brings allot of joy to my heart, but then as I realize the tragic experiences they had and endured, but are now all gone and how time has flown by, it kinda bums me out. But I can still get up and do my thing with a slower but more peaceful, easy feeling. May the good Lord always, always bless these guys for all they have given us, still to this day.🙁😢🙂 A great video and thank you for your time and effort here!!!
Here it is September 2024 and I still miss and wonder what would have become of this band if this tragic plane crash would not have happen. All of the original band members are gone now and I hope they are resting in Heavenly Peace, but have Heaven when we all arrive. God Bless each and everyone of them!!!
So, my Uncle is Artimus Pyle. And everything in the video was true and I approve! Hi uncle Pyle! He replaced bob burns after he left. And was a surviving member of the 1977 plane crash

Yes, and I thought I heard he wrote what became free bird as well. If true, he doesn't get the credit he is due. That band might never got off the ground without him.
@@kingbee48185 - Naa-ah, Free Bird was Allen Collins baby, and he kept trying to get the band to play it for years, until Ronnie finally was able to put words to it. He played pretty much all of the famous solo at the end, too. It's his magnum opus, and a labor of love, that he made happen through sheer heart. It's a favorite song for tens of millions of people. I have been in Skynyrd crowds several times as they played it, and there's NOTHING like thousands of people jumping up and down in time with a great song. Allen has been gone for more than 20 years, but his song will be played for hundreds. Nuff sed.
Facebooked with him a few times ... we were both fans of sunbathing our guitars to improve the finish and tone ... His leadwork -- especially on the first solo -- was just over the moon, as the old folks used to say. Seemed like a nice guy. Said he played those guitar parts through a Marshall, if that means anything to anyone other than this old man ...
@@DavidSmith-ss1cg I did a service call at Allen Collins house in the late 80s, he was spinning around in his wheelchair while his GF blew shotgun joints to him , gold records all over the walls.
I knew about the plane crash, I mean everyone does, but I didn't know about any of that other stuff. They made such good music despite the turbulent environment they were in.
What I found most disturbing is that not many people paid attention to the plane crash that killed one of the best song writers in rock history because well..... Elvis had left the building the same year. Lets not forget the other headlines that seemed to take precedence over that....... Star Wars..... The Iranian hostage crisis ( I may have those dates wrong but...) Gary Gilmore takes one to the heart. Apple Computers is incorporated. The NYC blackout. Son of sam is captured. The WOW signal. Lets not forget those who passed. Groucho, Wernher Von Braun, Joan Crawford, Bing Crosby, Freddie Prinze. Fuck. 77 was a hell of a year huh!!!!!
Like the movie Burlesque when Cher tells the one jealous woman, " You can't sing like that if ....". Can't exactly recall the full sentence right now but meaning without having been through difficulties in life. Which makes me wonder why I can't sing. My parents had both been terrific singers and musicians. Most of my late parent's families could. And this is quite true. Such a tragic life. The best singers have had tragic lives. Simple Man is an amazing song.
They were just reaching their next level too. Steve Gaines joining really made them the ultimate band. And the band was finally cleaning up its act with the booze and hard drugs. You got that right live 1977. Ronnie lettin Steve sing. Ronnie knew!
Because of most of the ways this band had far as fighting drinking and driving and doing drugs you can see why they ended up the way they did because there ain't no good outcome when you're doing all of those things think about it💯
Im not sure Exactly what your comment meant, but I sure as HELL hope your NOT implying that they deserved or had that crash coming. PARTYING had NOTHING to do with the plane crash. it was a fuel issue. Your comment was just plain Ass RUDE. Most people WISH they could have partied with the biggest Southern Rock band. Sorry for you if all you can do is criticise they're Lifestyle, instead of APPRECIATE the music they produced. Skynyrd opened doors for many other bands.
"Here we are right come tomorrow but tomorrow might not be here for you" was sang by Ronnie Van Zandt in That Smell the day after that song was released he died in a plane crash.
I was fortunate enough to see Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1976 at the Flint Ima on their one more from the road tour , they were definitely an awesome band and sounded great that night just like they did every night , I have never heard or saw any video where they didn't sound great , there is a fall concert without Billy Powell on the organ I think it's from 1975 and it is absolutely terrific, definitely strange not to hear him playing especially on Freebird but nevertheless that shows you how great of band they were
Really, calling their music 'Southern Rock' is, as Greg Allman said, "Redundant". Rock 'n Roll and Rock music came from the South. It'd be like calling Coca-Cola 'Southern cola', or champagne 'French champagne'.
They were a great band and even better live. Few other bands sound like the original master recordings while performing live. You take away the studio magic and they aren't really all that good. Stevie Ray Vaughan, Ted Nugent, Lynyrd Skynyrd, AC/DC, The Who, The Rolling Stones and some others are some of the few that are actually better live than in the studio. They certainly are as good and usually better. Also God & Guns is a great album and Still Unbroken is right on top with their best work. I always loved this band and regard them as one of the greatest of all time in R&R history. The two and three piece guitar attack and extended soloing makes them shine even more. It was true musicianship and raw talent. Nobody gives a fuck how pretty or handsome you are (modern Pop and Rap/Hip Hop). Can you play or not? They sure could/can!! John
It’s really sad that Artimus is not playing with them now , I know the band is not the same without Ronnie and Gaines , but they should let the drummer back in the new band
There is no more Skynyrd. the only member alive that is still playing in the band is Rossington. that is a shame and was really a shame when Ed King was still alive. It's still a great show and you will hear all of the songs with great proficiency. Medlocke was in the band before they made it big but that isn't quite the same. i played with people what have made it big. That means nothing to any one. I loved this band and learned to play many of their songs quite well and performed them in club bands for quite a few years until I got into production work to the point where i was making much more money as an audio engineer and stage technician than i could possibly make playing a guitar in a bar band. I want to say this band has really been through some shit and they were.
Actually, Ed came in to play bass when Leon left for a short period and ended up staying when Leon returned. Ed was a poor bass player but a great guitarist and song writer; he also played guitar for Strawberry Alarm Clock in the 60's, l believe.
@@patrickgrady8866 that’s bullshit, Ed’s bass work on Pronounced is as good as Leon, if not better. That whole “you’re the worst bassist I’ve ever heard” thing was just Ronnie being a good boss and smoothing it all over, so that Ed would happily jump over to guitar.
I visited Criswell Park Jacksonville Florida last month. In the summer of 1964 that's the ball diamond where Ronnie Van Zant knocked out Bob Burns with a foul ball Lynyrd Skynyrd was formed at Criswell Park that day. October 1977 I was living in Collinsville Illinois I was listening to my dad's transistor radio and smoking a joint in the backyard that's when I heard the Freebird fell to the ground... RIP 🙏
These guys were young my solace is God knew their heart and knew Ronnie was doing some serious thinking. Probably same for the rest of the deceased. I pray.
There are so many videos like this about major bands and I feel like I avoided a bullet by leaving my band Mondo Bando in 1977. Clive Davis had written to us and was asking for some of our material and we were at the right place at the right time....BUT GOD! The Ramones were on their first tour and coming to Seattle, and we were asked to open up the show for them but I had already quit the band 3- 4 weeks earlier and refused to come back. So many bands and their members have had miserable drug - alcohol - marriage- car accidents - injuries from fellow band mates and other tragedies that I now am so grateful that God removed me from more of the same in my life. We were an accident waiting to happen too, with a number of issues within the band. I heard one band member I believe from the Kinks say that being trapped in a tour bus and small hotel rooms with other dysfunctional band mates for months at a time, is like being trapped within a dysfunction hostile family that you can't get a break from. Tensions build up and people turn on each other but the show must go on, even with your enemies, on and off the stage. There is very little alone time. All of the Ramones died young and so many others from that era are also dead, including at least a few of my old band members, from foolish life choices. I would have loved the fame, money and perks but I too would most likely be 6 feet under by now. A man picked me up hitch hiking after band practice one afternoon and shared the gospel with me and within 2-3 months, I could no longer stay in the band. We were writing and playing very early American Heavy Metal music and would have brought a very dark message to the world and YHWH God put a stop to it. I have had my ups and downs in life just being an average person, but I think I have had a better life than a great deal of the rock stars who lived "the dream".
When Artemis Powell went for help he ran up on a farmhouse and the lady that lived in The Farmhouse shot Artemis in the shoulder. Can you imagine getting help for your friends and a lady opens the door and shoots you right in the shoulder with a pistol. You don't ever hear about the shooting.
I know the origin story of the bands name that they got from a teacher but in 1963 Allen Sherman did a song parody titled "Hello Maddah, Hello Faddah (The Camp Granada Song ) " in it "Leonard Skinner" got ptomaine poisoning after dinner. I wonder............................?
Ronnie wanted to change his life because he had a child but yet he went on a plane that he knew had issues. And the band members did not want to board it. The concert could have been rescheduled many stars have done it due to illness other reasons. So why didn't he do it for their safety?
What I feel could have possibly saved them, is that the pilots should have never engaged the landing gear knowing that the tops of the tree's were beating the hell out of the belly of the plane. From what I gathered the plane came to an abrupt stop and ripped to shreds immediately after the landing gear was engaged. If that wasn't done I feel they could've coasted the tree tops, decelerated, and slid on it's belly onto the field a few hundred yards away from where they initially went down. I know it's too little too late but My hubby and I love them and miss them terribly. Forever missed, Never forgotten.
Skynyrd officially died with Ronnie. Terrific singer/songwriter. Lousy human being, which ultimately caused the death of so many innocents, who, unfortunately for them, depended on him & also trusted him. What followed, wasn't even a shadow of the original band. All in the name of the almighty $$$.

On the hair-trigger violence of Lynard Skynyrd and the southern male: "Whereas Puritanism and capitalism conferred upon the northerner an innate sense of dignity, the southerner knew personal worth as socially mediated (Ayers 19-25). The honor that was accorded through interpersonal relationships was a complex function of Girardian doubling. Since honor meant that southerners beheld themselves as others beheld them, their self-worth lived in the look of the other. Wyatt-Brown recognizes how honor depended on such reflection when we describes it as “self-regarding in character. One’s neighbors serve as mirrors that return the image of oneself” (15). Honor made self-estimation into nothing but an imitation of how the southerner was esteemed by others. And since southerners desired such mimetic validation, they copied the desires of the other so that they would regard themselves as especially well-favored in the looking glass of communal approval. The result was that the community of honor was a network in which each member was at once a model for everyone else and a disciple of everyone else "(Gary Ciuba, Desire, Violence, and Divinity in Modern Southern Fiction, 21, emphasis added).

I remember we were flying low and hit something in the air or someone pulled a sheet over my head and said there is no hope for me man great song haven't heard in years but remembed a few lines I might even have that on a old 33/ 61
watching this video gave me depression
You just made coffee go thru my nose....lol
TheStrangeGod I’m what way, the story of the band or the video’s quality?
Skynard sure had it rough they would have made so many more great albums if that plane never went down.
And Leon Wilkison is one of the most underated bass players he was a bad mothafucker on the bass.
Man I love Lynyrd Skynyrd! I'm 37 knew a few things, but not all this. Dang I learned a lot more today. So sad. ❤ Thanks for the video.
this is only the high lites...Steve Gains replaced Ed king...they both had the same birthday September 14, 1949
@@samnobody8926 Wow!!!
I agree... They are one of the best American band. Love them 💕
I was at one of their last shows in 1977, Knoxville Tn. Great band.
But at the end... they're Gods of Southern Rock.
The ending of The Devils Rejects when they drive into the cops in a shoot out just goes to show Free Bird cements itself as the greatest driving song of all time.
I own a copy of the original street survivors album, with the flames. Knowing its backstory I get kinda creeped out everytime I see it.
It's probably worth a pretty penny, take good care on it.
its rare maybe worth more than a simple collectors album
I do too
Every time I watch any video on anyone or anything having to do with Lynyrd Skynyrd it has a way of taking me back to those years of the 70s with many, many fond memories of seeing them in concert and buying up all the albums and tapes of them as well as learning their songs for our bands to play. It brings allot of joy to my heart, but then as I realize the tragic experiences they had and endured, but are now all gone and how time has flown by, it kinda bums me out. But I can still get up and do my thing with a slower but more peaceful, easy feeling. May the good Lord always, always bless these guys for all they have given us, still to this day.🙁😢🙂
A great video and thank you for your time and effort here!!!
Here it is September 2024 and I still miss and wonder what would have become of this band if this tragic plane crash would not have happen. All of the original band members are gone now and I hope they are resting in Heavenly Peace, but have Heaven when we all arrive. God Bless each and everyone of them!!!
By far the best Southern Rock band ever
They set the bar very high that's for sure.
So, my Uncle is Artimus Pyle. And everything in the video was true and I approve! Hi uncle Pyle! He replaced bob burns after he left. And was a surviving member of the 1977 plane crash
Reeceypc solid drummer , wish he toured with the new Skynrd ..
and he is a very nice man. Very polite
We have had breakfast with skynyrd it was cool
I only wish I could have known him, and other members. This is my culture. I grew up with this music.
greetings from the great state of Texas your uncle is Artimus Pyle I surely hope he helps you financially if you needed my gosh I hope you got off the marijuana and the drugs and all this garbage you know cuz he claims to be a Christian that went to Israel but yet he still claims to be a liberal doesn't make a bit of sense whatsoever and thinks it's alright to be gay and homosexual no it's not read the Bible I think our team esteem needs to read his Bible again God hates sin not the sinner everybody's just not going to wall since I have in my face think they are I can watch my Jacksonville I was a little girl during this time. They'll living more North the span is kind of their they're not underrated but there they were good I would think they would be a little bit on the overrated side we seen them in concert one time my family and I are Christians now thank God and I really hope Gary rossington and your uncle Artimus Pyle has any makes fun of Judy and blue Teresa Van Zandt in one of his other videos of how they look like old witches and Dale Krantz rossington Gary's wife they do not know that they will buy which has but does he realize that Tyrese has passed on through years ago and that he's getting old too and we all get old and look different doesn't mean it's better or worse not everybody can afford plastic Sergio wants to be that vein Artemis post gotten old is he not see that either I mean seriously God bless you all it sounds a little bit chauvinistic in a lot of his ways same.. Judy Van Zant was afraid of Ronnie Van Zant a woman shouldn't be afraid of their husband or boyfriend he said this in Artemis sell one of these other videos on TH-cam but he didn't he exposes some things very interesting but he's a little bit of derogatory towards women he needs to really work on that maybe you should tell him God bless you all
Ed king wrote the sweet home Alabama riff
Martin Turner yea. He was a cool guy for sure. My uncle was a huge LS fan and was a friend of Ed. Sad to see good people go.
Living that rock and roll fantasy.
Simple Man is an amazing song.
no wonder they made such legendary songs.
They were just reaching their next level too. Steve Gaines joining really made them the ultimate band. And the band was finally cleaning up its act with the booze and hard drugs.
You got that right live 1977. Ronnie lettin Steve sing. Ronnie knew!
Steve Gaines revitalized the band.
@@CarolStJohn-ev9ry definitely! Lately my jams been “If I’m wrong” what an amazing song. Ronnie was a poet.
Because of most of the ways this band had far as fighting drinking and driving and doing drugs you can see why they ended up the way they did because there ain't no good outcome when you're doing all of those things think about it💯
But Steve and Cassie were not living that lifestyle, and they died... That's not karma imo.
"Here we are right come tomorrow but tomorrow might not be here for you" was sang by Ronnie Van Zandt in That Smell the day after that song was released he died in a plane crash.
one engine fail..pilots freak out & the greatest front man ever GONE! his two brothers carry on the name...GREATEST SR BAND easy no question!!!!
No more tragic than Bad Finger. What a sad story that is.
True, the song Without You always hits me heavy...
I would say a little more tragic but a few of the bad finger boys made their own choices
Although good band when I first heard them I thought the Beatles got back together
Saw Badfinger and Canned Heat in Evansville , Indiana , 1972 $ 4.50 - $ 5.50 day of show !
I was fortunate enough to see Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1976 at the Flint Ima on their one more from the road tour , they were definitely an awesome band and sounded great that night just like they did every night , I have never heard or saw any video where they didn't sound great , there is a fall concert without Billy Powell on the organ I think it's from 1975 and it is absolutely terrific, definitely strange not to hear him playing especially on Freebird but nevertheless that shows you how great of band they were
Billy Powell actually started as
a Roadie for them before he joined the band.
Really, calling their music 'Southern Rock' is, as Greg Allman said, "Redundant". Rock 'n Roll and Rock music came from the South. It'd be like calling Coca-Cola 'Southern cola', or champagne 'French champagne'.
I think this is one of the best Skynyrd videos ever
What a sad story , i miss their music.

If you've never heard Artimus Pyle's interview on Stern, do yourself a favor. Its great.
I used to have a copy of the flames album. Wish I still had it.
me too
Ed King was never a temporary replacement that ended up staying. He is an original on all of the early albums.
Loved Skynard. Such a devastating loss
I don't think there's such a thing as a "ten-minute freefall".
This is literally an audible Wikipedia.
Holy fuck... this is some dark shit. I’ve never known their music but this is truely tragic
That's really something. You mentioned some things that Behind the Music didn't explain.
Sweet home Alabama, geez it brings back memories
6 people died in the plane crash, not 7.
It just didn't silenced rock and roll..
..it silenced the entire state of Jacksonville
Rock and roll 🎸 hall fame
So tragic man so much talent
Tuesday gone.

This bands story s tragically sad😥
Lynyrd skynyrd died in 1977. Those assholes that call themself lynyrd skynyrd today are punks riding on Ronnie's shirt tail. RIP lynyrd skynyrd.
I'm a free birddddddd
ooooooooo that smell
I know the origin story of the bands name that they got from a teacher but in 1963 Allen Sherman did a song parody titled "Hello Maddah, Hello Faddah (The Camp Granada Song ) " in it "Leonard Skinner" got ptomaine poisoning after dinner. I wonder............................?
In part, yes. Bob Burns told the story
Ronnie wanted to change his life because he had a child but yet he went on a plane that he knew had issues. And the band members did not want to board it. The concert could have been rescheduled many stars have done it due to illness other reasons. So why didn't he do it for their safety?
Ask Pete Rudge.
Keep it alive...🇺🇸
PLAY FREEBIRD.🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🦅🦅🦅
Very cool & a great job 👍
Been to 2 of concerts best band of all time
What I feel could have possibly saved them, is that the pilots should have never engaged the landing gear knowing that the tops of the tree's were beating the hell out of the belly of the plane.
@@pattyrosier1854 Gear was not deployed according to NTSB.
Really sad, what a great band ,they would have went on to do great things.

U know now that I have learned the real story about one of my favorite bands,I think I have more respect for these guys know the troopers they really were any one who's been close to the real music biz knows that rock n roll is the furthest damn thing from a box of chocolates, and a real thanks to the guys for getting it done right, and staying on track...I had a little journey myself trying to find a band the likes of my hero's Deep Purple but it was so tuf most bands did not have their shit together, and they had more excuses and reason why they could not even make two or God for bid three practices a week,I almost got a break with SKID ROW ironically I'm pretty on par with Sebastian but he got me on one octave and just a little better with texture,he great I put him next to Tyler from aerosmith ,I missed my shot not enuf experience, but it was slim picking for hard rock in jersey ....piece out.

Am I correct in saying Rossington is the only surviving original member?
On the hair-trigger violence of Lynard Skynyrd and the southern male:
"Whereas Puritanism and capitalism conferred upon the northerner an innate
sense of dignity, the southerner knew personal worth as socially mediated
(Ayers 19-25). The honor that was accorded through interpersonal
relationships was a complex function of Girardian doubling. Since honor
meant that southerners beheld themselves as others beheld them, their
self-worth lived in the look of the other. Wyatt-Brown recognizes how
honor depended on such reflection when we describes it as
“self-regarding in character. One’s neighbors serve as mirrors that
return the image of oneself” (15). Honor made self-estimation into
nothing but an imitation of how the southerner was esteemed by others.
And since southerners desired such mimetic validation, they copied the
desires of the other so that they would regard themselves as especially
well-favored in the looking glass of communal approval. The result was
that the community of honor was a network in which each member was at
once a model for everyone else and a disciple of everyone else "(Gary
Ciuba, Desire, Violence, and Divinity in Modern Southern Fiction, 21, emphasis added).
One wishes the law would have arrested them to protect them from themselves.
