WHY WE AREN'T TALKING ABOUT OUR ROOF: Carter Carburetor Rebuild and Installation on 360 V8 Engine

  • Alright, we know we promised to show our roof after we painted it . . . but plans change and for us, that change happened when our carburetor leaked fuel in our engine bay. This only meant Andy's goal of wanting to rebuild our carb came, well, sooner. But after all that work -- a carb rebuild, an intake manifold and valve cover cleaning -- will our Chrysler/Dodge V8 engine still run? . . . That is the question we are still trying to figure out . . .
    ✧ About us ✧
Hi, ya'll! I'm L, the writer behind Soul of a Seeker. By now you will have met my Englishman, Andy, who is also the illustrator of our stories. We met in search of a hiking and backpacking partner when he came to America for a six-month work placement. During those first talks all the way to now, we have focused on two dreams: Mine, to travel and his, to restore an old vehicle. Saying our dreams aloud somehow welded them together and that is when the idea of overhauling an old motorhome came to be. Here, we purchased a rare 1965 Clark Cortez -- the first motorhome in America with front-wheel drive. We are working to renovate it -- doing all the work ourselves -- before we hit the road! In the end, we are one American girl and one English bloke with one dog and one cat (which we call our ‘pup-kit’) and one 1965 Clark Cortez motorhome but together, we have one soul of a seeker.

Hi guys, great job tearing it down, cleaning it all and rebuilding. If I did that I'm sure I'd have several pieces left over! Loved watching it!

Hey George! Thanks for your message! I was convinced I would have missed something on the carburetor but I took so many pictures and filmed taking it apart, I referred to them so much! It was great fun! We're glad you enjoyed the video! Andy&L

Great job getting the carb apart (and back together!) I like the stop motion re-assembly. The engine 'valley' looks really clean(valve covers werent THAT bad. I think that 360 has a lot of life left(subject to compression/leakdown tests)

Thank you! It was a great little project, something I'd not done before. Yea everything looked really good and we later did a compression test and got great results wet and dry! I hope you're right! :) Andy and L

... for 5 seconds anyway! Ha ha! I'm convinced it was just the fuel supply - its currently super dodgy running from a jerry can in the Cortez! Andy&L

Another Great video, the stop motion must take ages to film.

Thanks Andy! Yea it certainly wasn't the quickest way of rebuilding a carburetor! I took over 600 photos doing it! Andy&L

What engine service/rebuild book are you using?

Hi, thanks for your message. We use a couple but the main one is a Dodge 1973 Chassis service manual, it covers pretty much everything we need engine wise. We also use "How to rebuild your small-block Mopar" by Don Taylor and Larry Hofer and finally we have "How to rebuild the small block Mopar" by William Burt. Hope this helps! Andy&L

An engine swap would be more efficient, buy a up to date running motor with good compression across the board. Traveling with that old antique engine in the future is going to be major disappointment as you sit on the side of the roads needing repairs you can't find parts for.

The 360 that is in it just needs a bit of love, we have plans to do compression and leak down tests soon with an engine refresh and EFI conversion in the future. The LA has been used for years and is a great engine with parts easily available. It shares parts with the 318 and the 340. The Cortez originally came with a Chrysler inline6 and although that engine is a workhorse it doesn't really have the power for the Cortez on modern roads. Andy&L
