  • An opinion video about gatekeepers in metal scene or music in general - part 2. Why gatekeepers are important and what are the three steps or reasons why gatekeepers are in fact necessary to have? Let's talk about that. Again.

I agree. I also don't tell non-metalheads about black/death metal. I don't talk to teenagers. If I am talking to someone in their 20s or older and they don't like death metal by now I don't think they are meant for it. I heard stories of people getting posers into extreme metal and it ended up as a disaster.

Gatekeepers are 100% necessary. Of course some ppl take it too far, but pompous outsiders who want to enter your subculture and then command that it be changed to some degree to suit them is the height of arrogance. Going to live shows and cooperating with the culture of that scene is so fun. I won’t mosh at rap concerts and I won’t sit there like a dumbass with my phone out during a death metal show.
In this past couple years I’ve gotten to see Necrot, Municipal Waste, Havok, Toxic Holocaust, DOWN, and all those shows had a fucking FUN vibe. The friendliest yet most energetic mosh and circle pits I’ve seen in a decade.
I’ve never seen or experienced racism of any kind outside of the rap scene. Being a white dude at some of these South rap shows is decently intimidating based on all the nasty looks and ppl staring to make sure you’re not singing along when they say NlgGA like they do in every song

I only talk directly to one person in person about extreme metal apart from some internet people.

If the Nords had been able to gate keep alot harder, imagine where black metal would be today..
Sure, you wouldn't have certain festivals etc plus you'd have to dig alot more to fund the jems, but I'll bet you the genré would hold many more great bands.
It was A certain poser in the Norwegian scene who blew the lid off everything.
    If it wasn't for him...

I listen to black metal since maybe 20 years and i give a shit about gatekeeping. it is a problem what solves itself in time. I never go to any shows so i have no idea about how big that problem is. In my opinion bm is not made for shows or having a party with friends getting fucked up and see some bands. I can totaly understand why people enjoy that but in my opinion it is something you enjoy for your self in special moments where it gets honoured in the way it should be. Its something totaly personal and not meand to share. The less your into it the more it stays in a kind of that mystic way even when we all know tge biggest myth is the myth itself.

While I understand your point, I can’t agree with you. Like Archgoat guy once upon a time said it, music is meant to be played a live and a lot older tradition than ”new school things” like recorded music. Also, in live situations the music is truly tested since you can’t fake that shit or take shortcuts, like with recordings.

@@RautaMetal ok i understand that point of view when it comes about musical point. Im going with you when were saying that there is to much music out there produced from some bunch of loosers in mommys home or so. But we both know that bm is more than music. I agree with you that the quality of a band is testet live. And even for the band its nice to put there energie directly to the people and theres definitly energeticly something going on. But me i do it more in my way. Its not party music. For me its something what happens IN ME and for myself. But sure i can understand other peoples point of view its just not my way i use that "lifestyle"

When i started listening to BM in the early 2000s and read articles about how bands wanted to stay "exculsive and for thier own people" my first thought was: why bother to tour and sell albums worldwide?

Yeah, there are lots of brown people listening to nsbm. That was not who it was marketed towards but they like it as well. Got nothing against that. It think it is cool even a lot of them like nsbm.

@RobHellfire666 Come on, there are lots of great NSBM bands these days. Back in the day, hyper lo-fi production and terribly over the top lyrics were the the norm. These days there are great albums in the genre, and the only reason to deny that is ideological prejudice. Which, maybe ironically in this case, is an invalid reason to put down a genre.

      "Nationalist socialism"
Has absolutely NOTHING to do with "Black Metal"
It's RIGHT THERE in the name 😂🤦🏻‍♂️
Politics, do not, ever belong in metal.
      Period.. 😎

@RobHellfire666 Sure, maybe etc. (except "national socialism" in a BM context isn't political per se, but rather a kind of anti everything rejection). I was just questioning the idea that "nsbm" is bad metal, which would seem like a strange stance to take when all serious representatives of the BM genre from Marduk to Primordial are seen as "controversial" in the US.
Obv black metal is and should be pro hate. If you're getting along with your local HC band (or death metal band 2024) you're doing something wrong.

Black metal is the Devil's music. End of story. Other genres are much more inclusive and that's fine. But some things have to be earned.

  • @ceceliataylor84

Also, i may be in the minority but i dont need bands to be "evil" offstage. A show is a show; its an act and alot of fans (and artists) take the persona too seriously. Be satanic onstage and collect model trains offstage, idgaf.
