I actually like this Edge ST. It's not perfect, but with enthusiasts in mind I think it's one of the most well-rounded crossovers on the market. It pretty much does it all and makes little to no compromises with its performance, while still being fun in a "you just got smoked by a Ford Edge" way. It probably should be called the Edge Sport, ST-Line, or Edge SHO, but whatever. If you don't want to shell out $40-45k for one wait a few years, throw a tune on it, and decimate all at race wars.
Great review. It's nice to see 1) A TH-camr whom looks at the car in the perspective of what it's intended to be 2) A TH-camr that actually knows how to set a car up in a corner then flow through it. As an ex NASA track driving instructor used to 1.0g + cornering I'm thoroughly impressed at how much I can get away with in the corners in my Edge ST. You can feel the torque vectoring erase understeer on heavy right footed corner exits and that's pretty darn cool to do in a 4200 lbs crossover. BTW, you're one of 2 TH-cam reviewers I know of who's even mentioned feeling the torque vectoring effects. Pretty much all the others except the guy who took it to a track day limit their "Sporty" driving to flooring it for about 3 secs in a straight line. I got this car to replace our beloved but aging Saab 9-3 2.0 T Sport Combi wagon and could not find a wagon I liked to replace it. This is as close as I got to car like balanced handling / responses and lack of rolly polly ride in a quiet and comfortable road trip vehicle for my family of 4. With end of the year deals I also got just under $10K off the sticker + 0 % financing making my near 50K sticker priced car less than $40K. All and all a great deal for a car that's more fun than any SUV / Crossover stickering for less than $65K on the market today.
Currently have a 16 Edge Sport. Just drove today 700 km from Ontario to Mont Tremblant in Quebec. This vehicle is practical and can carry four people and luggage with comfort for all. Has a suite of convenience and safety features galore. The Sync 3 works extremely well with voice prompts so you don’t need to fiddle with controls. More than enough power to pass in any situation safely. Is excellent when fitted with winter tires in adverse weather conditions. It is not quite up to European fit and finishes but most North American products have similar shortcomings. It’s a sporty SUV and the V6 is a great power plant where most offerings come with 4cylinders now. It’s not cheap but haggle on the price, buy a demo or wait a year or so to buy used with some warranty. A Macan S is a wonderful machine but will come in at 20K more with equivalent options.

We bought a new 2019 edge st in the spring of 2020 and my wife and I love the car. This car is excellent when entering the freeway, stops quickly, and goes from 65 to 80 in the snap of a finger. The car responds! Since I am not a car enthusiast, I can't get into the nuance of shift points and stuff like that, but my sons, who are drivers liked this car a lot. One of the things I like about the 2019 is that the monitor is smaller. If I want to look at a monitor, I will stop and use a pad or laptop.

And better fuel consumption. No vibrations from the hood. The cabin is very quiet. And by the way in my point of you it is really worthy of the ST badge! No matter what others may think!

I have read a comment on someone else who bought one too and he was very happy with his ST and no complaints. It 100% should not have an ST badge. It's the same type of shit that Mitsubishi pulled when they brought the Eclipse name back for their new garbage crossover, just on a much shorter time scale. Before this hunk of shit, the ST badge meant small and fun hot hatchbacks paired with a manual transmission. But Ford decided to remove those from America because people are obsessed with giant crossovers here, so this Edge feels like a slap in the face to us with good STs. Oh well, Ford is now dead to me.

I know. The Americans always get so much more powerful cars than us. I'm jealous. Their accord v6 had 280hp and their camry's have 300. We have vuxhall diesels
@@colelockridge5816 Yeah I know. All we have is diesel this, diesel that. Even their Ford Kuga, called Ford Escape in the US has 245 hp, and the best we get is a 2.0 litre diesel.
I own a '17 Focus ST and I probably wouldn't mind the ST badge on this Edge if Ford still came out with the Focus and Fiesta ST's but since those vehicles won't be coming to the States anymore, I feel like the badge is kind of being diluted by "loosely" applying it to vehicles that really have no business being specialized as "performance" oriented. Yeah sure, the Edge ST is fast but it's still a heavy, bloated people hauler that's built for comfort and convenience, not a raucous, superb handling, zippy hatchback that's made to handle roads and tracks with aplomb. Yet Ford wants to convince you that the Edge ST (and the upcoming Explorer ST - really?) is the next generation of performance and handling, which is probably no different than the Edge Sport. I'll still keep my Focus ST. I can haul my family and all our stuff when needed but when I'm by myself, I can hit the back roads with plenty of performance AND handling and have way more fun than doing that than in a ST pretender. I don't hate the Edge ST. I just don't think it deserves that badge.
I’m really intrigued with how the transmission shifts now since you mentioned the 2nd and 3rd gear ratios. Would you be interested doing a video with the camera closer to the tach and doing driving around to see show it? Regular driving and aggressive driving? I currently have a 2017 fusion sport and while I love the car, the torque converter holds back too much power for the area I live in. Small city and with lots of hills and lights.
TheTopher I watched SG’s video. Night and day between his review and yours. It was almost as if he was embarrassed to be reviewing a ford. And yup. I cant spot the 2 3 shift under full throttle. I was hoping the 8 speed DNA came from the 10 speed. I recently had an expedition max as a rental car for 5 days. For being an abused rental car I love it. 10 speed and the 3.5 are a great combo.
In sport mode it either skips 2nd or it is unnoticeable. In drive it will sometimes buck between 2 and 3 at very light throttle for a moment before making up its mind. At moderate to heavy throttle I have never noticed any concerns. After 1000miles I noticed higher boost even with 87 octane. Switched to 89 and shift issues decreased. Going to go 93 next fill and see if the 2/3 shift smoothes out more.
I got a fully loaded 2019 edge st, performance blue with the upgraded brake package., and I love it. Also own a 2016 challenger hellcat, and in contrast the edge is still a fun daily driver with plenty of power, and torque. People love to cry, and complain in the comment section, but in the real world none that matters. Half of these people don't vote with their wallet anyways, and are the first to bitch about so, and so car being discontinued. Deal with it.
It's so disappointing coming from my own Edge, it sounds so beefy and even beefier after a CAI/Air resonator removal. But...the 2015+ Edge sports are just so much quicker
Are you kidding me? Only class in which Ford does make good vehicle is F 150 and possibly Mustang. Everything else is terrible, road turds with cheapest interior in US market. And they usually rank in bottom 25% in reliability.
@@thedriver5462 - You're definitely biased against Ford for no logical reason. It's okay to be wrong. Ford makes excellent vehicles when compared to the garbage that GM and Chrysler makes.
Why do you think I am being biased against Ford? I have had 10-11 different brands over the years including 3 Fords, EU spec Transit and Mustang S197 and Ford Taurus 2013 once I moved in the States. So I don't really have reason not to like Ford but they really don't make excellent vehicles. Their interiors are crap(probably worst in the industry ) and reliability is below average. Not that GM or Chrysler are any better but that doesn't say much , does it?
@@thedriver5462 - There's a reason why Ford never took a bailout either, so... They're the best American brand you can get today. What else am I supposed to say? I'm not going to lie and say their garbage because they simply are not garbage.
Came to say the same thing. Ford's Achilles heel right now is simply the oudated looking/feeling interiors of all their cars, even the newly redesigned Expedition. Test drove a new F150 Lariat and it was alright, but then going over to check out a RAM and seeing the interior and feeling how much better it drove, I drove home in a RAM instead of the Ford.
So yea dealers are selling these most additional options MSRP 50k with discounts down to 42K if you shop. I'm thinking ppl don't like the boxy appearance. Fit and finish it's a Ford!
I've found these around 33-40k brand new and that's a good deal for new Edge ST if you look around. I'm considering one if the numbers look good out the door.
I'm searching for a replacement for my Tundra and so far it has narrowed to 2021 or newer Edge ST or Explorer ST. Watching your videos has helped but for the feel, as you talked about in this video, what are your thoughts directly comparing these?
Not saying I'd spend that much on a Ford.. but the Edge interiors are really nice actually, as I work for a rental company and drive these all the time. It's in need of a redesign though.
Exactly my thought. For 50k, you expect a much better interior than you get with this car. Hell just look at the Explorer. THAT interior feels like a 40-50k dollar car on the highest trims, and it's in Ford's lineup!
I know but companies who usually sell a lot of their cars to rental agencies tend to make cheap interiors to save some money and make more profit.(Toyota is good example ). My wife had 2013 Taurus and it is very similar in design to new Edge and they even share a lot of interior parts, switches etc. I am not bashing Ford here but 6 years later they shouldn't put so similar interior in their 50k performance CUV. Other issue is strange disgusting smell of interior materials. Both Fords we had (Taurus and Mustang) had that issue and they start to smell bad only after 4-5 months of ownership. Currently we have CX5 that is 2 years old and interior is good as new.
Love your reviews - I know you've reviewed both this & Honda Passport - which seems very similar in form & function. I love to drive but need the size/utility.. In 2021 - which would you choose?
I really like this car. Some say it doesn't live up to what an ST should be. They're forgetting this is a much bigger car and will never be able to handle like a Focus ST does. When the Explorer ST comes out, the Edge will feel like a real sports car by comparison. The people that are making a big deal out of a few gaps that may be a little off obviously never looked closely at cars like Focus ST or RS or Fiesta ST. The fit and finish on those are far worse and people are mourning the loss of those.
Does this have electronic dampers like the fusion sport did? This seems like the fusion sport replacement, being that they're getting out of the sedan business..
@@DeadofWinter321 agreed. Gimme the Audi SQ5. Real refinement. I don't want to try an afford a 2020 sq5. I have different priorities right now. But I have a b7 Audi S4, and this is the first time I've really had a car I get excited about walking up to every morning. It's just so smooth and powerful compared to the American vehicles I've owned.
Only reason I’d probably grab that ride is the audio. If you’re like a family man, audio engineer and other shit like that it’ll be dope. Cause most people won’t be able to use the audio to it’s potential. This car is shit compared to other choices, but just like anything niche appeal sells.
I'm a Ford owner myself (Fusion) but for $50k? That's stretching it for an Edge. Also I'm not a fan how they used the ST badge on a big midsize SUV - they should have badge it as an Edge Sport (like the Fusion Sport) and it would probably have received better.
Actually, I believe this is a slap in the face of car enthusiasts. Ford takes away ST/RS cars from the US, then sticks ST badges on a bloated SUV to ease the pain. So much wrong with this car and then there's the price. Should we expect an Escape ST (or RS) or an EcoSport ST (help us all) to fill the void in Ford's street performance segment. Mustangs are cool, but not for everyone...neither are CUVs /SUVs.
This is the all new Taurus SHO......sits a few inches higher, it's now a HATCHBACK and not a sedan, and the renamed it the Edge ST. I'm game.....no complaints.
... It's heavy, feels heavy, has an isolated sense to it, the full leather seats will be slippery with little bolstering (the alcatara middle might help reduce the slipperyness); and I believe Ford dorked up the transmission by going cheap. [see the review by savagegeese]
K03sport+ I believe some people were complaining that the bolsters were too much for some reason, but it’s an SUV.. So handling isn’t on par but it’s pretty good for the SUV segment, the Macan handles fairly better.. But that’s a compact SUV, this is a midsize SUV and has more weight than the Macan. I do agree on the transmission, 2nd and 3rd are pretty much just the same, so it’s technically still a ‘6 Speed’. But I don’t find the seats slippery, I test drove one of these ST’s in town took it through some corners and went up an on ramp at speed, my butt doesn’t really slip from the seat. Maybe it’s just the kind of pants people where that makes the leather so slippery for them.
The ambified noise on this 2019 Ford Edge ST sounds a lot better than the Ford Fusion sport. Almost sounds like the Nissan VQ V6 noises. When it’s ambified.
If you want a performance SUV this size just buy the Jeep Trackhawk. It may not be as cheap but the interior is nicer and it will be reliable because the engine uses an old design.
kobalt.seven The trackhawk engine is reliable honest to god. It has a classic push rod engine built in Windsor Canada which is known for their car build quality. It also uses a Transmission made by the same company that makes Toyota’s transmissions.
I like the interior of the Edge and always have. I almost bought one in 07 when they came out, but they didn't offer cooled seats then so bought an MKX . You can already buy this for at least $4k off sticker, so nobody should be paying $50k.
If they could get rid of the stupid sound, or at least make it optional. I'd seriously consider buying one next year when i'm due.. I'd instantly remove the tailgate ST badge and black out the one on the grille if it couldn't be removed... It definitely should've been called a sport. People complain about the look of the interior, it's not THAT bad and the seats are nice.. If an interior functions well and is comfortable, the looks of it don't really matter to me.
I'm sorry but this thing is just unacceptable for the money they are asking. One journalist put it like this: "They took an ST badge and slapped it on a crossover to see if it would sell." Their US marketing team obviously doesn't understand what that badge is supposed to be marketed toward. The Fiesta ST and the Focus ST are cars where effort was made to make them fun and engaging giving average buyers access to performance cars. The Edge is not affordable and to be quite honest an insult to their enthusiast customers.
@KingMacintosh no... I dont own Ford, my friend does and I have no bias. I just see people hate on Ford for no reason other than the fact they run the automobile industry.

T V wait what.... a gt350 doesn’t compare with a crossover in any way. This is daily driver door knob
who told you is 50k. i bought one ,Top configuration and tax included.45k LOL
Small city and with lots of hills and lights.
check savagegeese's video
@@TheMrRadish ditto
I actually like the pumped in audio, i think its a cool idea
I have a 2013 Edge Sport with
200,000mi and it’s been amazing! Im looking to get the ST Next!
This is the most reliable 2 row SUV I have ever seen:)!
So true!
That fake sound is so fake.
It's so disappointing coming from my own Edge, it sounds so beefy and even beefier after a CAI/Air resonator removal.
But...the 2015+ Edge sports are just so much quicker
Paddles are great for downshifting downhill especially in snow/ice
Voice recognition is excellent on the Edge. A helluva lot better than the German counterparts.
Loving the reviews man! Keep it up!!
I wish they would’ve kept a v6 option for at least one version of the edge besides the ST the turbo 4 as a standard engine is disappointing
Ford really does make some fantastic, solid vehicles. This vehicle is a perfect example.
I'm not going to lie and say their garbage because they simply are not garbage.
make a video of a Ford Taurus SHO
This interior looks SOO OOOOLLLDDDDD
Came to say the same thing. Ford's Achilles heel right now is simply the oudated looking/feeling interiors of all their cars, even the newly redesigned Expedition. Test drove a new F150 Lariat and it was alright, but then going over to check out a RAM and seeing the interior and feeling how much better it drove, I drove home in a RAM instead of the Ford.
For 50k you could have a used Macan Turbo...
A 50k Porsche without sunroof and heating seat... big no
50k for the brand buddy and it aint even new
Would be a total money pit. Not worth it for the badge.

oh man
So yea dealers are selling these most additional options MSRP 50k with discounts down to 42K if you shop. I'm thinking ppl don't like the boxy appearance. Fit and finish it's a Ford!
Would love to see a final impressions video on the Genesis G70!
Would wait till refresh I think. That engine noise is the deal breaker for me though, the Honda V6 like in the pilot is so much better sounding.
Assuming there are pretty big incentives on these it might not be a bad buy. But yea no ones actually dropping 50k. More like low 40’s on this spec.
I agree, I bought mine for under 42k and MSRP was 50k. There is nothing that is comparable and in this price range.
Mr. Topher, what's it gonna take to get you to hop into a GTI?
Almost 50k for the generic crossover with terrible rental car interior? No thanks.
Yeah you can get a used mercedes for 30 and its 100x better
U know rental cars are actual cars right?
I have an edge ST and my sister just bought a Honda passport. Near identical @ 18MPG but edge ST is way more fun
Nice, any chance u will do one for the Ford Escape too?
This thing felt like a tank to drive in the front end (compared to the CX5)
But the CX5 is too ugly to own.

Amazing that a Chevy Blazer can sticker for 55k. For the class, just under 50k is a decent price, but an Explorer Platinum is a short stretch.
What do you mean by "fit and finish of the Japanese..."???
Ford fiesta ST was about 21k, focus ST 26k, RS 36k, rebadged edge sport 50k hahahahah
Vanneker the RS was 41k. Almost the exact same starting price as the edge st
But 50k is msrp and you usually won’t be getting the car without discounts
In this particular edge it looks like the fusion in SUV roots
Only reason I’d probably grab that ride is the audio. If you’re like a family man, audio engineer and other shit like that it’ll be dope. Cause most people won’t be able to use the audio to it’s potential. This car is shit compared to other choices, but just like anything niche appeal sells.
I'm a Ford owner myself (Fusion) but for $50k? That's stretching it for an Edge. Also I'm not a fan how they used the ST badge on a big midsize SUV - they should have badge it as an Edge Sport (like the Fusion Sport) and it would probably have received better.
Lovely review, I'm saving up for an Edge ST! Beautiful car!

The exterior is sexy, the interior looks like from early 2000s.
It pulls hard up top very well
Actually, I believe this is a slap in the face of car enthusiasts.
Fords are getting better and better, what’s toxic is the dashboard on my momma that looks ugly

In Austria you pay for the normal Ford edge 72.000€ the ST isn't available in Austria 😅that's crazy
50K? ... 8 More K and you can get Model 3 Performance or For 10k more, Model Y performance.
Why 50,000$ instead of getting this you can get a Explorer 2020 st by 50,000$
This thing handles pretty good, for an SUV.
Maybe it’s just the kind of pants people where that makes the leather so slippery for them.
lmao I watch too many of these throughout the day
I’m an avid fan of Chrysler (don’t murder me) but even I draw the line at Ford’s build quality. Holy crap these things are made poorly

If you want a performance SUV this size just buy the Jeep Trackhawk. It may not be as cheap but the interior is nicer and it will be reliable because the engine uses an old design.
Joel Repass nothing Chrysler makes is reliable, dude...

66skate I am just saying if you want a real performance SUV. The Edge st is a waste of money if you are looking for one
I like the interior of the Edge and always have. I almost bought one in 07 when they came out, but they didn't offer cooled seats then so bought an MKX . You can already buy this for at least $4k off sticker, so nobody should be paying $50k.
Your suond is amazing
I would rather have a loud exhaust instead of quiet inside
If they could get rid of the stupid sound, or at least make it optional. I'd seriously consider buying one next year when i'm due.. I'd instantly remove the tailgate ST badge and black out the one on the grille if it couldn't be removed... It definitely should've been called a sport. People complain about the look of the interior, it's not THAT bad and the seats are nice.. If an interior functions well and is comfortable, the looks of it don't really matter to me.
You can probably turn off the fake sound thru a hidden menu somehow
@@zro2gon Unfortunately not! Hoping someone can hack it.

Energetic Fox Studios that is an early build. They got rid of it in the later ones. Mine doesn’t have any fake noise.
