Dan how did you get to be so smart and have such a pretty mate as Kika. She's a smarty too. Thanks for bringing us all along and it was very enjoyable to watch all of the technical stuff and parts and putting together, honest i n j u n. God bless you both forever and ever and look forward to next Sunday.❤❤

Really really love and benefit highly from all of your DIY videos, & DIY moments within regular videos! Because of you, I've got a better drill & have made my first bolt holes in the aluminum of my solar panel rack! Adding a new pair to my 20-year old Siemens panels... And, an oscillating multi-tool for attacking gelcoat stress fractures around the stanchions when the panels are up & running! I wonder how far the ripple effect from your demo videos has gone... We wouldn't be Us without You guys! Much love & gratitude!

I have tied my Jib Sheet off to a tiller for self steering with the wind. It ties on the opposite of what you think it would and of course, your boat will change direction if / when the wind changes direction. Very cool and well done video. Thanks for the info.

I am so happy you guys finally got your wind vane, but i was lil bit shocked because i was expecting Dan crafting his own wind vane, which i am 100 % Dan can craft anything he really wants to if he put his mind to, but i am sure in the future Dan will craft and patent his own wind vane design . can wait but till that time come, Happy Sailing Guys, and thank you guys so much for everything.

Not fair, you made it seem so easy ! With that said, it was worth every drop of our nervous sweat when we cut the huge hole in the transom and installed ours. Like yours, ours has been flawless. The only issue we have ever had is that the top of the tower (the plastic ring) can get loose in really bad chop and start getting pushed up. After consulting with Yves we just retightened and now we keep an eye on it (with a screwdriver by the helm to be able to fix it rapidly if needed). After ~7000 NM we are still in love with it !

With the combination of the Cape-Horn and Dan's video instructions, one should have zero problems on this installation. These instructions took extra work while doing this installation. so thank you guys. I checked this unit out when you first mentioned it and I compared it to other brands.....I would chose the Cape-Horn unit as well. I really like that you can attach a small inexpensive autopilot control arm to this units servo rudder and use its power to move the main rudder.

Excellent episode. I installed a windvane just over a year ago (different brand, but exactly the same 'servo rudder' principle). Expensive, but the best upgrade I have even made to the boat. I did a solo 550 mile trip earlier in 2017. I used the windvane all the time, at all points of sail, and it made the trip a real relaxing pleasure. I only steer to park the boat nowadays. Looking forward to seeing it in action.

Awesome install video and very well explained.
I had one of the first Cap Horns 20 yearsago when Eves was just starting out. I installed it on my Hans Christian 38. It worked great upwind and downwind in all wind strengths. I think my installation might’ve taken four days and I was at a dock. But working up to drilling that first hole in the hull is what took me the longest amount of time.
You can also hook an electric tiller pilot up to it to steer when motoring, but I guess you don’t need that feature.

    • @SailingUma
      @SailingUma  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yes, the build up to drilling that hole was definitely the hardest part.

  • @mikemichaels1875

  • @mboyer68

I'm surprised you didn't build a wooden donut where the big tube goes through the transom for added strength and peace of mind. Is there not much force on that tube?
Checking with only a 1/4" hole through the transom was genius. Making a wood plug to neck down the hole size on that rotating piece so you could check accurately, priceless. Dude...you have the skills of 1% of the 1%. It's crazy how good you are. Being mechanically inclined is critical to being able to do what you guys do. It's either that or be very wealthy!

Not only a great video but I loved all the attention you pay to detail and explained every single item and what it does and how it was attached. I used to rewrite telecom instruction manuals for my clients so I appreciate the attention to details. Never assume someone knows anything when explaining something! HA! BTW...Nandji just installed there wind vane today as well. It's officially WIND VANE DAY! Ü PEACE OUT!

Dan, I Hate/Love watching you work because of my problems. When you held something over the transom, I was sure you were going to drop it; because I knew I would. That being said I take back the hate because I don't like the word or the feeling. Keep up to good work, I am back sailing (vicariously) through you guys.

Is it weird to comment on something loaded almost five years ago which hasn't had any other comment in two years? I found your channel a few months ago. After watching a couple of recent steps, I rewound the tape and started from the beginning. Since this is my first comment/contact, let me say I watch a fair amount of TH-cam content and your channel is my favorite. Truly. Now for the reason of my comment. Tell me I'm wrong here, but when you were installing the last piece, the cap over the aft end of the shaft, you referenced the thick section goes to port. Said it twice while pointing to starboard then installed it with the thick side to starboard. I read through previous comments to see if anyone else asked about this. Is my perspective off here? Just good natured ribbing if I'm right. In Dan's defense, he was pointing left when he referenced port, but he was facing the stern.

Stevie FordRanger just watched theirs back to back with this one. Interesting to see the difference -my gut feeling is that although this is a more complex design, it would cope better if you were caught with too much sail up. Id be worried that the boat would round up too easily with the other type. Anyway great vid :-)

Your's seems simple enough to operate and install. I'll be very interested in seeing how she works on a long passage and how much fiddle you have to do to get it operating correctly underway! Again, great video!

Yeah, screws over water. Maybe a taped drop cloth to catch anything that fell. Apparently, that did not happen. It would have had I been doing that. And one more thought. The internal support brackets, the first thing you installed. If they are holding everything sturdy, why not put a larger long backing plate to add strength over the long haul? Well done!

If you ever do any work like this again.... Like maybe installing or dismantling a folding prop, or indeed more work on this wind pilot? Fix an upside down parasol or umbrella as a contingency to catch dropped parts or even just get a significant other to hold it at risky moments.
There's footage somewhere of exactly this, by a dive team underwater removing a fixed and building new folding prop assembly over sand and weed.
I'd say it might even be worth using a lightly coloured brand spanking new one to save that crucial but fiddly non-standard component.

We found a timber strap across the glass transom stoped it flexing under way on the inside m and allowed to have some caulking on the inside as expoxie won’t stick to stainless steel wich excepts vibration under way has lasted 32 k so far they struggle down hill in a big sea if your boat is not up to speed and take a pattern of the vane and log it you may need it It was made in ply and we added 4 inches in hight and works better The reason for the timber strap on the inside of the hull is the unit flexes side to side and will crack the glass and running will let water in big time , glass the timber on fill both sides with caulking. Go out and test it in big seasbesor you go off shore to iron out the bugs good luck

I hope that Yves Gelinas puts your video on his Cape Horn website, it is the most detailed one that I have ever seen. But, I'll still have to watch it a few more times to fully understand it's operation. I think you can attach an electronic tiller pilot to the quadrant for light wind use, won't you need a NMEA network, or comparable, to then use a remote from the cockpit? I would need a different model/setup if I bought an A30, removed the inboard engine (diesel or Atomic 4) filled in the prop apature and installed a 'tilt-up' outboard as James Baldwin (Atom Voyages) does on his refits --- to much risk of explosion from petrol containers stored in the outboard well. Cape Horn does offer other types of transom attachments, 5 of them, I think...

What was the reasoning behind going with cape horn over some of the other brands available? Great video none the less, would like to see how much if any storage was lost in lazarette and will some shields be needed to prevent gear from pinching or binding the lines.

I watched another recent video of a boat that installed a wind vane that uses its rudder, no connection to the boat's rudder. When in operation, the boat's rudder is tied off dead center. They said they choose that design because it can be used as an emergency rudder.
I would be very interested in the decision process that they used to go with a servo wind vane instead of a direct drive.
I'm not ready to drop $3K US on one yet, but I will someday!

Just added a detailed explanation the this videos' description above. Hope that helps clarify our process for choosing the Cape Horn over others.

Great install video. I am purchasing one from Yves as I write this! Very excited to use it to sail to Hawaii on my Beneteau 361. Yves has been quite helpful in devising solutions to my swim step sugar scoop stern. The advantages of this installation is quite clean lines and backup steering in case of wheel steering cable failures. Thanks for the video. Fair Winds!

Glad to hear it! We LOVE IT!!! It's such an amazing piece of kit that just works. And Yves is a great resource for solutions. He's done quite a few installs on so many different boat types. You'll love it!
