    Sam you are awesome. I once watched a guy along the dock take weeks to install a multi thousand dollar wind vane. Fussing over a plethora of detail. Then weeks later when he finally took the boat out to test it he spent even more weekends trying to figure out why it wasn't working properly. Fine tuning, remounting this and that. Just watching him put me off wind vane stearing all these years later. Then you come along, buy a used one off ebay for a few hundred bucks, fab a missing part, mount the whole thing up from a floating dock (while making a video mind you), and you go straight out for an overnight sail. Where the biggest drama of the day was running soft aground. You are amazing and thank you for being you and sharing with us all ! You are very inspiring. I hope we don't lose you to instagram i cant handle any more social media... :-O !

    I've been using the same Windpilot Pacific system on my boat for 14 years. This system works perfectly, requires no maintenance except rinsing with fresh water once a week. Even with very little wind, it still works reliably thanks to the transmission of hydro power. The system also teaches you how to trim your boat perfectly. You did a good job

    Just picked you up on the tube, been watching some of the earlier video’s but really like the sailing ones. I started several years back watching sailing video’s and have a few under my belt. Keep doing the boat one, love to watch the refitting process. Like the projects. I’d consider sailing South for the Horn and head out West, lot of isolation but less dense with populations for now, and provides a window of time for the bug to run its course. Safe journey sailor.

    That's a great ebay find with the windvane, I've removed refurbished and remounted an old Hasler unit to my Bowman 26, if I were to replace that I think I'd go with the smaller windpilot, the fact it's so easily removable is great, although the Hasler folds up so it's mostly out of the way if you remove a couple of bolts, so not bad in this respect either. I was supposed to be having a year off work and sailing UK to Portugal this year, all now off due to Covid-19. All the best Sam from UK...

    Great job in mounting your Windpilot. I’ve used one for 12+ years and am really happy with it. Can’t imagine sailing with it. BUT I think that you need to recognise the strains that the system has to cope with. Do you have a good backing plate on the inside of the transom? Also think that your creative method of attaching the control lines to the tillermight be a little light.

  • @danceswithcarsdc
    @danceswithcarsdc 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    So sold old one included with the old boat (ranger). Different transom, higher overall and sloped, rear waves less likely to swam you but getting in from the water, rope ladder temporarily?
    Seems like getting back on board is more important, diving off easier than getting on... More when I watch more. Maybe

      Virus is on the water, Cruise Ships, other people, etc, but getaways PricesLess (cue old card commercials). Glad you got to try it, aground happens, much less problems than Hawaiian island windward side, rocks, no home marina, etc. Re travel plans state to state travel restriction, Marina's likely closing, NYC like and that is just warnings most places now. VISAs and international, built in quarantine if passage takes that long but get half way and close borders immigration go back, keep going ask for on board travelers aid? Need x weeks supplies to go to next open harbor/country, safe passage, etc. Ymmv good how to, just jealous, I guess. Hopefully last self reply: the push rod replacement may not be the same marine quality (say got galvanized at homedepot/Lowe's, etc) as the other metals included with the autopilot, so beware of rusting and trying to get the nuts off, seizing, etc. Happens with bicycle hardware too, say put on a rack, but cheap hardware and have to try to cut off the frame at certain points (brazeons/dropouts) so next one either have to drill out then tap & die and/or connect somewhere else pclamp, but takes less load/stresses.... chain quality similar, don't know for a while, looks ok but not same electroplating process... Ymmv

  • @tednottodd

    Sam, I'm a little worried about that push rod long term. I'm afraid that you may have weakened the rod where you bent it, that mild steel is already weakened because of the threads and putting a 90 degree bend in there will weaken it further. I would suggest getting a solid rod that wasn't threaded and cutting your own threads where you need them. I'm sure that arrangement you have will last for a good long time, my concern is that over time it might weaken. I'm unfamiliar with the amount of strain on it, so maybe my concern is ill founded.

      @@samholmessailing The rod itself is strong enough, it just hates being bent. That's where it likes to break, at the bend. BTW - loving the videos!

      That makes sense. My solar panel support arch broke at the bend too after a few weeks at sea.

    When I buy my CD,(soon), I think I will "loan" it to Sam and after he fixes it up, "un-loan" it back. I would go to sea with him however.
