    Its late here- just found your vlog - glad someone put the bridge there!! Hope you have been able to start the sorting out.
    The River Murray flooded a couple of years ago and caused many problems for houseboat owners (and anyone living nearby). Also the locks flooded. Jan South Aust

    I guess you have learnt a lot in a short time, when over wintering on a boat.
    Have food in stock for emergency's.
    When you hear a noise investigate. I was moored on the upper Thames and an old boat upriver broke up, I ended up with a gas bottle one one side and a on the other.
    Another time at Windsor heard footsteps on deck, it turned out to be a drunk squaddie trying to steal my folding bike chained to the winch. Two of his mates were giggling hiding behind a tree. My dad was a Guardsman and so I let him off saying I could report him to the barracks, the next morning he returned very apologetic with a six pack.
    Also keep extra lines to double up in fast flows or lengthen others. Have you anchor ready to deploy.
    Good luck with the rest of the winter, stay safe.

    Bloody hell, we pass you regularly when we turn our boat round for water whilst you were moored at the Hope and Anchor, we are struggling just round the corner at Harris boatyard. We were in the White Horse on saturday and was considering coming down in the boat and mooring exactly where you are.
    Good job we didn't.
    If you hadn't moved up to the bridge you would have been in big trouble as you would have been on the towpath when the water went down.

    Lived on the River Nene for 5 years through some of the most horrendous winters & Flooding. A time ref for this was when Northampton was flooded some years back. Since that time the EA policy was always to move water down stream. I was moored at the last Gate before it went tidal on the other side of the gate. During high tide the Nene water had no where to go so used to flood out to the sides over the Fenland flood plain. All I can say to you is once you’ve been through something like this you definitely become more aware of potential issues and weather. Keep calm use common sense you’ll be fine. 👍🏼ps. Which is the main reason when having our New boat built we went straight onto the canals.

    Did you mean Birstall lock 45 on the river Soar? I can confirm what someone else has mentioned, the river Soar can go into flood rapidly after heavy rain falls, I've been caught out there at the back end of last year along with the tree that came down near lock 35. Best of luck to you. I now avoid rivers in winter times where possible to be on the safer side.

    The water came from combine snow melt, rain & ground run off unable to drain into frozen soil, from the Leicestershire valley including the river Soar & its tributaries. Also due to high levels of run off from the Pennines , Peak District & Staffordshire catchment areas, the River Trent, River Derwent, River Dove, River Erewash, River Wreak,there are raised levels & flooding downstream reducing the flow & causing further backlog.Unfortunately water during flooding can flow upstream as well.

  • @funkydozer
    @funkydozer 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    Check your lines and the water level every 2 hours including through the night, sleep is secondary to getting secure. I think you’ve made yourself as secure as possible in the circumstances, but personally I would allow more slack in that bowline to keep you from getting hung up on the bridge. Maybe some viewers (with waders) can offer assistance from the bridge with ropes / food and especially water bottles if they are in your area. Keep checking the distance from your stern to the towpath edge with your pole. CRT should be treating this as a risk to life if you have no water, if you run out call the emergency services immediately. Good luck.
    Edit: Tie on a very slack backup line at the bow to the bridge in case you have to cut your primary bowline in an emergency! The current will pull any knots too tight to undo. Have a bread knife handy for this.

    You should have shouted out to those close by asking if they could get food to you. Maybe in a big tub? Somehow ? Not sure how fast the current is or the direction the water is flowing. Lesson learnt I suppose. Take on more food, fuel and water if possible in winter … not kicking you when you’re down. I lived in a static and had no water 2 winters for about two weeks at a time because of snow and ice freezing my pipes. Thats water and waste so toilet was out of action. You cannot prepare for everything but you can try make it a bit better. So far so good the boat has not capsized and you should be reasonably ok wedged against the bridge. Also, just because you dragged your boat completely out of the water, if you fail to tie it up, it may not be there in the morning, and i may not feel like swimming out to get it for you when i get home at 4 a.m. Water is fun, but it's so dangerous.

    So here we go, what happens in winter? Wind, rain snow and frost and so on. Ah the joys of boating during the summer, totally different ballgame during the winter. As you are now finding out, thank you for pointing out for how unprepared you are.
    I can assume you done no planning, unlike other skippers would? What do I do if something goes wrong?
    Where is your basic lifesaving equipment?
    Life jacket, anchor survival suit? Like you say you’re in a dangerous situation, that canal/ river is a dangerous beast than your use to, what are your emergency plans for if you go overboard?
    What are your plans for dealing with cold water shock?
    What are your plans for dealing with fast flowing water?
    You go over board this time of year you got 30 minutes to survive, that is if you are prepared to deal with the cold water shock, and I know you’re not.
    Now being serious here what lessons are you going to really learn from this?
    Or are you just going to write it off as a bad experience?
    If I was you I would look into joining a RYA course to learn about boating.
    For those that say it’s only canals! You are in a boat on water boating is still boating.
    Educate yourself because as you have found out there is NO 4th emergency service to help you out when you get into trouble!
    But people like yourself never know think of things like this, just the dream of a slow life cruising, but your now finding out the other side of being not only a skipper, but a boat owner.
    Remember that is your home what plans do you have to save it when it’s like this?

    • @Inspiration2022
      @Inspiration2022  13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@mrt7936 Thank you for your thoughts. I think you're totally underestimated my skills and qualifications as I am actually a qualified rya level 2 powerboat skipper. Also so scuba diving instructor with 15 years experience. And I've also lived aboard a boat for the last 8 years. And I have had first and experience with cold water shock and I assure you you haven't got 30 minutes. You've got more like 3 minutes. Shallow water such as canals and rivers get very cold and in rivers it's deceptive how cold they are as the water is flowing. You can lose heat from your body 18 times faster than air. This is why it is extremely dangerous to be submerged in water without protective clothing in these conditions that we are experiencing at the moment.
      I have dived all over the world in warm waters and cold waters and trained many students over the last 15 years.
      Where does your knowledge base come from? Have you had much experience yourself?

    • @mrt7936
      @mrt7936 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @ my base and knowledge, well let’s see let’s try 40 years now retired from the RNLI man and boy, been accredited with saving over 120 lives during that time from the sea.
      Had not my crew and my self not been there those lives would have perished.
      Also advanced power boat 2 qualified, sea survival, fast water rescue, and surf rescue to name but a few.
      But what was the first thing taught about being around water?
      My friends invited me to travel on the Norfolk Broads with them, must admit I got quite a few looks wearing a life jacket, the only one at that time.
      That lasted until the second day when one of my friends slipped and ended up in the water.
      Let’s say it was a valuable on the job teaching lesson not only the importance of a life jacket, but also shown how to rescue someone from the water.
      So yeah hence my comment, it only takes one little thing to happen for things to go wrong quickly, I think you would agree that it’s better to be prepared than not?

    • @Inspiration2022
      @Inspiration2022  13 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

I thought I had it quite bad until I saw the news and the social media with all the people that have really suffered in the leicestershire area and all over the country actually. A fair number of your videos seem to show you in dangerous predicaments. Are you just unlucky or ill-prepared, or are you doing it to get views? I hate to see anyone in any danger but boating can be dangerous and one needs to understand and be able to mitigate the risks. A fairly obvious preparation for a boat of your size would be to have a suitable anchor, especially as you are river cruising. I think CRT even make this clear in their advice for travelling river sections. You may also want to consider where your boat is positioned when the water starts to drop - or your next video might be "Help! Boat stuck on dry land!"

      @@thedogfather5445 I'm not sure I've done that many dangerous videos. It's just that it's happened a lot recently with the floods. And I've just documented what's been happening. The locks are all damaged where I am at currently which has stopped me from being able to get off the river. Otherwise I wouldn't have been in this situation.
      The water has now gone down and I'm safely moored up on ordinary mooring points. Even though it has been a drama the last few months, I must say I still love living on a boat.
      Thanks for the watch and thanks for your comments.

      @ I’m not, it’s probably the wrong place to discuss it though. Science can’t agree 100% either and without an Earth 2 to test stuff on it’s difficult for scientists to reach any valid conclusions until whatever happens has happened.

    The Canal and River Trust is a charity and is facing a big cut in government funding after a six-year period when the grant has been frozen (and hence its value has already fallen by over 30% in real terms. The government contribution of £52.6m in 2022/2023 is only a quarter of the total income of £225.1 million, yet the CRT continues to waste money on things like DEI.
    Now compare the Government's contribution of £52.6 million with its £4.3 billion spending on aylum and refugess in 2023, with another £13.7 billion for the 2025-2026 fiscal year. The CRT should be highlighting the misuse for public funds. It is madness that government wants to comply with foreign demands for aid yet is ignoring fundamental needs of the UK, and then wants organisations to comply with corrupting DEI policies. Much as I would love to contribute to the CRT, there is no way I would do so unless it removes all the DEI stuff and publicly states its rejection of the government's requirements, recovers pension underfunding from the government, re-alignment of trustees & co-opted menbers.
