I grew up on a farm in Ky starting in 1933 and the Carters were everyones favorite singers. I miss them too this day. I can still hear their voices coming out of that big radio. No electric so our radio was battery powered and they were very expensive so dad only allowed it to be turned on for the Grand Ole Opry on Saturday nights. Well, he did listen some during the week to Lowell Thomas news because WW2 was raging at that time. Reading down the list of comments I see some go back ten years. Makes me wonder how many have passed on and left these memories behind for us to see. Now on to some great music by the Carter Family!
Hello, William. I'm not nearly from the same time as you, sir, but I'm a KY native myself. I grew up in Bath and Menifee counties. Whereabouts are you from?
Am I a soldier of the cross A follower of the Lamb And shall I fear to own His cause Or blush to speak His name [Chorus] On the sea (the sea, the sea) Of Galilee (of Galilee) My Jesus is walking on the sea On the sea (the sea, the sea) Of Galilee (of Galilee) My Jesus is walking on the sea Must I be carried to the skies On flowery beds of ease While others walk to win the prize And sail through bloody seas [Chorus] [Verse 3] There shall I bathe my weary soul In seas of heavenly rest And not a wave of trouble roll Across my peaceful breast
I'm not a fan of gospel music, especially today's version of gospel music. But I can listen to the original Carter Family singing gospel for hours and never tire of it.
Too bad we don't hear this type of music anymore! I grew up listening to The Carter family,Jimmie Rodgers & Hank Sr. Gospel music, I doubt if most people would even know what an autoharp is,if not for Mother Mabel & her daughters playing it! & I know there has got to be an autoharp in heaven being played by one of the Carter girls!
I just love these songs with Sarah singing. The original Carter family songs are by far my favorite. They're so honest and plain, nothing fancy but great musicianship.
My mother sang this to me when i was a child. Im 58 now and need this in my life more than ever. Oh the beautiful sight of the Savior walking on the waters. Maranatha. Come soon, dear Lord.
Met Mother Mabelle at the Horseshoe Tavern but I didn't really know the things she had accomplished . She was accompanied by a slew of daughters and I fell in love with Anita as had many other guys . Mother Mabelle played the autoharp an instrument that did nothing for me but years later when I heard this song and her picking the guitar it blew me away to realize I was in such a presence without knowing who she was .
Fantastic Harmony. Sara was one of a Kind..in more ways than one. Planning a visit to Mt Vernon Va to see her and A. P. graves soon. A.P. was one of my relatives but he didn't treat her right. Poor lady.
This song for sum reason, has really affected me in ways I can’t explain. I broke down in tears & I really LOVE this song now ❤️😭 I enjoy it. Thank you for sharing it
I just love Sarah Carter's beautiful voice! A.P. was entranced by it and by her at a young age and it led to the formation of this seminal groups whose simplicity and wonderful musicianship has never been surpassed.
Carter Family "simplicity and wonderful musicianship has never been surpassed". Amen to that. In the 80+ years since the Carter's first recorded I've yet to hear any other group that could provide such incredible instrmentals with only two instruments. I listen over and over to many Carter songs and remain awed by the instrumentals by Sarah & Maybelle on autoharp & guitar.
It’s beautiful in a different way. It’s just like a winter landscape isn’t beautiful like flowers and sunshine and stuff in summer . But it’s still beautiful.
heyy ..i thinking ..old peoples was very happy. this energy was seem on the them songs.. listening ..Look at the happiness. İ am Turk ..İ very love all good people..
This is music sung from the heart by people who went through hard times that we cannot imagine through the ‘depression years’ .. This music was as real as it gets !!❤❤👍

For gospel to sound beautiful, it has to be done the Carter family. Many gospel singers today try to make it sound like rock music and it's just injustice to beautiful music. I'm not a religious person but love gospel music when it's done right.
With tunes like this one from the Carter Family, It's easy for me to lose myself temporarily. To 'blank out' all the hustle & bustle of the day, for three or four minutes, enjoy a group that comes along once in a lifetime. Thanks for posting! I have most of the Carter Family on C D's, but while @ the PC, it makes it awful easy to click on You Tube & 'Reflect'. Life is short. Stop & enjoy the Gospel.
Oh my Gosh Ms. Rita....wow........this is awesome. How proud you must be. How fortunate you are and yet ...so many hearts are with you ....I can't tell you how much I love this.

@waterhead001 Two years ago, I bought "The Primo Collection 2CD Set" - The Carter Family "Can the Circle be Unbroken". On the Sea of Galilee was among the songs that were on CD1!
I never tire of listening to the original Carter family or the later Mother Maybelle and daughters version. A treasure trove of folk and gospel music!!
Does anyone have or know if there are films on their concerts they performed. That would be really great if there were any to download. Thanks to everyone who has contributed thier music to this site.
The electronic world, in one sense, brings us all together. In another sense it confines us in our own little worlds. I talk and joke with strangers, in grocery store lines, burger joints, etc., to remedy this malady. When I see frowning people, I ask them to smile, so people won't think it's Monday. It seems to bring them out of it. Pass it on!
@waterhead001,My youngest son is a 'whiz' @ electronics. He will take my old vinyl, (78's & 33's), cassettes, & other CD's to make new CD's with songs in the order of my preference. I could contact him to see just which original he got this from. In the mean time, I bet baasting may be able to answer that one. ENJOY!
Another great song by the Carter Family.. Does anyone know which key this tune is in. Most of their songs are an the key of C but this one doesn't seem to fit

Hello, William. I'm not nearly from the same time as you, sir, but I'm a KY native myself. I grew up in Bath and Menifee counties. Whereabouts are you from?
So many songs by the Carters make me fight tears. Every time I hear them I feel some immeasurable loss to all of us.
Their not gone home yet as long as you need them for you three there

its 5am and I've been listening to the Carter family in my bed for more than 7 hours now. I can't believe more people don't listen to this.
They do, and I am.
It's been 5hrs already and I'm captivated.
Great stuff
@@sarakambouris9668 Sara,Im in love with You.
Been listening to them since I was a kid. I will never stop.

That's because good music is timeless and spans generations.
Oft times simpler is better. This is one of those times.
I agree So much. Rhyme, rhythm and melody. We have forgotten that.
Oh the memorys this song brings back, listening to the old records as a child

Their masterpiece.
As solemn as an Appalachian church on a cold Sunday morning.
So sparse, and so yet so grandiose at the same time.
Great song.
So simple and clear. What a witness.
Simply beautiful. I'm in awe (and wonder how I've missed their talent until tonight.)

Maybelle's Carter guitar lick with emotive harmonies, sincere and powerful and to the point.
I'm not into religion at all, but I love this song and I've just started getting into the Carter Family, I dig it very much.

My friend and I are Atheist, but we absolutely adore this kind of music, way better than the "music" that they play today.
This is a very inspirational song! Thanks for sharing!

In today's complex, crazy world which has degenerated into musical insanity like Rap, this music shines out purer than ever.

Trivia: Mother Maybelle's guitar cost $275 in 1928. A lot of money for poor people!
Today it would be PRICELESS. Just thinking of all the music that was played on it is staggering.
